Take care of yourself steppemum - the m/c thread is a wonderful place of comfort in this difficult time

niknik · 17/02/2004 11:24

Hi guys hope everyone is well

I'm having another one of my panic attacks, convinced that every thing has gone wrong again.

I started having very low abdominal pain on Monday and have been off work since. Now have back pain and I just dont feel that I have any regnancy symptoms left.

I have another reassurance scan booked at the EPU on Monday, when I will be 11 weeks, but I can't say they seemed overly enthusiastic about offering it to me. The fact that I have had two recent m/c's didn't seem to interest them.

Still waiting my date for my 12 week appt

Quackers · 17/02/2004 11:50

NikNik, Hi, I just wanted to try and reassure you as you seem to be having a little panick, to which I am no stranger as you know!!! I am surprised at their attitude given your history!! I know it was really tough this stage as my symptoms lessened alot at about 11 weeks and you can easily worry if this is the end or not. I did have lots of aches and pains around this time too, possibly uterus coming out of your pelvis, it must take some effort for our bodies to go through this. Your chances are really good and you've come so far so hang in there a few days and you'll see on Monday. I'll be thinking of you then.xx

niknik · 17/02/2004 11:56

Thanks Quacks.

I dont think being off work helps either too much time to think. But it was work who insisted I put my feet up and rest until I get past my 12th week scan.

It was reassuring what you said on the m/c thread that was it only 1% have 3 m/c's in a row

pollingfold · 17/02/2004 12:37

Niknik

I understand your worries but hopefully Monday will give you the reassurance that you need, and it sounds like work are being great. I wish my boss would be so generous, although I have yet to tell them until after the 12 weeks.

I'm going through my own little worry spell, since I'm now 9.5 weeks and although I've had mild nausia, I have not been sick, in pg1 I was puking everyday from 9 weeks. It maybe that since I've changed my job am eating more regularly, but having had m/c your mind races doesn't it?! Sounds like you are on the right route to putting your worries to rest on Monday, but I just don't want to go to the doctor in case the news is bad.

Hopefully we can get through this patch together

Why don't you fill your time with going to the cinmea and seeing things that your DP would never dream of going to see.

niknik · 17/02/2004 12:50

Thanks for the reassurance Pollingfold,

I'm sure everything will be OK with your pregnancy, a lot of people seem to have differences with the amount of symptoms they have from pregnancy to pregnancy.

Going to see parents today and I am sure I will be well and truly pampered there.

And DH has said that I can order as many films as I like off "Front Row" so I will probably sit and watch a couple of films this pm, to help stop the boredom well and truly setting in.

jacksmumto1 · 17/02/2004 22:51

Hello! Saw the midwife for my booking-in appt today and very surprisingly managed to hear the baby's heartbeat (unusual at just 10 weeks!). She couldn't offer much info re: caesarean or 'natural' birth (had emergency cs last time); I have to see the consultant in 4 weeks to discuss that. I asked about the nuchal scan - it'll be about £180-200 private; she recommended it which is good but also annoying as we have to see if we can find the money rather than being offered it as a routine scan.... But in all, it went well.

How is everyone feeling? My nausea has settled so I am hoping that is it... but we'll see! Still incredibly tired though! I hope everyone is getting on ok and please don't worry too much(!) Easy to say and hard to do I know but be positive!!

tillymint · 17/02/2004 23:05

Hi jacks,
Are you sure you have to pay for a nuchal scan. That is absolutely terrible!!!! And HOW much. I'm sure they're not that exp[ensive at Kings. We have three local hospitals doing it for free.
Post code lottery again!! Where do you live?
How old are you? and why does your mw feel it is necessary? Do you have a history of Downs in your family? Sorry don't mean to pry, but £200 is a lot of money!!!

Quackers · 18/02/2004 11:58

Hi, I thought that was alot too!! Where do you live Tillymint. Bupa do them alot cheaper at many centres, The Foetal Medicine Centre is about £100 in London. there's lots of places cheaper if you do a search on internet if a nuchal and finding out about Downs is important to you.

niknik · 18/02/2004 12:14

Jacks great news about the heart beat and glad your nausea has eased

If everything goes OK for my scan on Monday I am going to book in with Proscan (£100)in Nottingham for my Nuchal.

M2T · 18/02/2004 12:38

Hi again folks!

Tillymint - Due to the postcode lottery I am having to pay £140 just to have a 20wk anomaly scan! We are only offered a 12 wk dating scan as routine.
All the private hospitals quoted £200 but I found an Ultrasound clinic about 25 miles away that will charge £140. A BARGAIN EH???
Couldn't you look on the web for an Ultrasound clinic Jacsmumto1?

And hearing the heartbeat at 10 wks? WOW!

littlerach · 18/02/2004 13:22

Isn't it just so crap that there is nothing "standard" with ante natal care?
We have a routine 20 wk scan, nothing else.
Nuchal scans are between £150 and £200.
So ridiculous.

Quackers · 18/02/2004 13:56

It's a joke that the care differs so much, it really is. I thought there were guidelines for this sort of thing!

jacksmumto1 · 18/02/2004 14:38

Yep £199 is the cost I have just been quoted!! I'm in Bristol and at the moment, the scan isn't offered. My risk level is very low and we don't have a history of downs on either side so in that sense it's unlikely we have to worry too much but I do know that dh would struggle to come to terms with a child with certain problms and the thought of a termination at 20 weeks would be extremely difficult for me.... so complicated! We were not even offered the chance of a private scan when pregnant with ds so I never had to think about this then but this time with the midwife so 'pro-nuchal scans' it's really diffcult to know what to do..

I'm off to do a web search and see what I can come up with!

Quackers · 18/02/2004 14:50

It's a tough one Jacksmum, I agree and i think it gets harder with each pgcy to know what to do!! It's such an individual decision to make! Like you say , it's what you would do if the nuchal was high risk and then have an amnio with a 1 in 100 chance of miscarrying and then a possible termination at 20 weeks which I have just been reading up on procedures for this and it was very distressing. It's an entirely different concept after 12 weeks and now I know what they do for terminations between 14-20 weeks I just couldn't do it. It's kinder after 20 weeks. ARC is very good for providing info on antenatal results and choices and is unbiased. Good luck and hope you find a cheaper Nuchal!

M2T · 18/02/2004 15:12

When I asked the midwife about a nuchal fold scan she looked at me like I'd just landed from Mars! No-one gets offered one here, in fact I'd never heard of it until Mumsnet.
It is so difficult to do what's 'right' as there are SO many differing opinions of whats 'right'.

Quackers · 18/02/2004 15:16

That's right M2T, and I think your opinion changes with each pgcy. I think you just have to be as informed as possible and if it means doing your own research then so be it. You'll be armed with the right info for you to make your own decision

suedonim · 18/02/2004 16:39

Ooh, I'm glad you're here M2T! Have you seen on the Scottish news today that it's been recommnded that all pg women in Scotland are offered two scans?? I'm not sure if/when it will kick off but it might be worth asking around or contacting your Health Board. Not everyone is in favour, though, according to this BBC article .

tillymint · 18/02/2004 23:19

Hi all,
Since you ask Quackers,I live near Epsom. When I was expecting dd1, we were offered a free nuchal scan at Kings, since I was over 34, and high aghe risk.
Last year (aged 40) I chose not to have a nuchal scan as it had taken me three years to concieve dd2,and we didn't want to have to make any difficult decisions. However I did have a 6wk scan (to check for ectopic) and I requested a 13wk scan following a holiday, for reassurance. ALL FREE. Baby came in July. Great Care.

Now at 11weeks, I've had an 8week dating scan, and have decided to have the nuchal scan (now done at Epson GH and St Helliers in Sutton, and East Surrey in Redhill for FREE). Since I'm 41 with v high age risk, I'm hoping it will be able to reassure me, or at least give us a chance to prepare.
What would happen if you claimed you were staying with friends in Epsom, and phoned Epsom Antenatal to request a scan - for whatever reason? Pains etc. ....There must be a way!

Quackers · 19/02/2004 00:30

That's great Tillymint, they obviously have it sorted there!! IT's a shame everyone can't have the same number of scans and nuchals etc...

Dinny · 20/02/2004 15:00

How is everyone doing on this thread? I've got my 12 week scan in a week - very nervous and excited. Stressing about the fact I haven't been able to take my folic acid that much as too sick. Hope it's OK.

cazzybabs · 20/02/2004 18:32

I am still not being that sick but feel sick all the time. At least with dd I was sick in the morning but that was it. And my tastebuds have really changed - can't find any foods I like except salad with pizza express dressing on it and baked pots (honsetly) and choc ice-cream (not sure if that counts as a craving!!!). Bizare. Am so exhausted though - I am still rowing but I have an outing and then have to have a little (3 hours) sleep. Still am on half-term this week so can catch up.

Tried to phone the docs last week, but they said I had to wait until I was 8 weeks before I could "tell" them, which again puzzled me because that didn't happen with dd.

Dinny · 20/02/2004 18:57

Mmmm. Pizza Express dressing sounds v appealing!

My auntie was telling me in the "old" days, you weren't "considered" pregnant till you'd missed your second period. Is that why you have to wait till then to tell your doctor? I told mine at 7 weeks, btw.

cazzybabs · 20/02/2004 20:47

I have no idea - maybe because I am trying to bypass actually seeing the doctor, as last time it was something, i am pregnant. do you want to keep the baby. Yes. Bye. So I felt it was a waste of my time and the doctors. Anyway shall ring up on Tues.

stringbean · 20/02/2004 21:39

May I join this thread please? I haven't gone public yet - I'm only 8 weeks, due date Sept 25th - but hopefully will remain anonymous here. Just thought I'd comment on the scan postcode lottery thing; we only get a 20 week scan offered in this area. If you want anything else you have to pay for it, unless you're over 35, in which case I think you get offered an amniocentesis (how invasive is that? Not to mention costly - and risky!). I've got a 12 week nuchal fold scan booked at the Fetal Medicine Centre in March (went there for ds and they were brilliant - really thorough), which will cost £130 - fine if you can afford it, but you're a bit stuffed if not. Why is there such unevenness (is that a proper word??) in NHS maternity services? Ho hum.
