they should be free. i don't agree with people having them just cos they don't think they can handle an eensy bit of pain, but if labour is progressing slowly and the mother really cannot cope with the pain anymore and it is making her very tired etc. an epidural should be allowed. it would mean people who didn't have the money might put have their babies lives put at risk. and that'd not right!people get painkillers for all other sorts of injuries and illnesses, so why not for child birth?
i do however think the risks of epidural should be made clear cos i don't think they are. they can really slow down labour as they mean you are unable to move around, and it can also be difficult in the pushing stage cos you can't feel it. this means intervention like forceps or ventouse is more likely and no one wants that! i do think epidural should be a last resort - maybe they think if they make you pay then it definitely will be a last resort. it's the same sort of thing for elective c-sections. maybe these should only be allowed if medically necessary? there's loads of celebs who take this easy route and opt for a c-section instead of giving birth nature's way.

diddle · 11/05/2006 07:47

you nosy parker mummytotoby Grin

Only 4 weeks today for me, well hopefully, i'm going to be so annoyed if i go over my dates, i'm ready now!

MummyToToby · 11/05/2006 11:24

was just reading up about the epidural thing. you wouldn't have to pay if they thought it was clinically necessary. probably going to get shot now, but i sort of agree. epidural should be a last resort when all else has failed. if nothing else worked then they would give it you, they are just saying if you want it straight away and they don't necesarrily think there's a need you would have to pay and that would make a lot of people try other options first. they would probably then realise most of them didn't need it and the ones that did, would still get it and wouldn't have to pay anyway.

I can see the logic in that. What sort of pain relief are you planning on having mummytotoby?

MummyToToby · 11/05/2006 13:30

if i can manage the pool and gas & air. but if i need more then i will have to go the pethidine route and if absolutely necessary an epidural but thats definitely a last resort. don't like the sound of it going in my spine!how about you?

OP posts:
BigHotMama · 11/05/2006 13:34

I'm hoping I can just grit my teeth and bear it! Grin ..... Only joking! My 'ideal' way to give birth would be to get in the pool and have G&A. Would possibly consider pethidine if really felt it necessary but defo not epidural, dont want that big nasty needle in my back! Yuk!
12 weeks to go for me now! 4 weeks Diddle that will be here qiucker than you think! Are you coping ok with the heat? How long you got MummytoToby?

BigHotMama · 11/05/2006 13:36

I would love a waterbirth with gas and air and tens in the early stages. Although i am totally prepared for nothing to go to plan and my birth plan to go out the window.

MummyToToby · 11/05/2006 16:02

oooh yes i've bought a TENs machine, but more to help with the back ache i am getting now. was only £15 on ebay.

hey fellow RH mummies to be. how is everyone? only another week to go diddle - how exciting!! i hope i don't go over i've got 5 weeks left and i'm fed up already, dread to think how you're feeling. does anyone know how far over they let you go?

OP posts:
BigHotMama · 02/06/2006 10:25

Hiya MTT n Diddle, how you both feeling? Not long for you both now? How you been last few weeks?
I got 9 weeks to go and am feeling ok apart from belly really heavy and walking is becoming bit harder..am really starting to waddle about at a much slower pace than normal.
Think they let you go over 10 days? When I saw Dr Lewis about my blood sugars (due to my bmi being over 30) he said they will allow 10 days for me then get me in and start me off. Hoping it wont come to that but you never know! I know of a girl who had her baby at RHH and she was in and out in same day and said they were fantastic, think she had quite a quick birth lucky bugger!
I leave work in 6 n half weeks now and cant wait! I'm going to cherish some 'me' time before baba is here and really pamper myself and let the nesting instinct kick in lol.
Have you both got everything prepared? I've made a start but still got some big things to get like buggy and cotbed.
In Walsall a shop called Kiddisave do a fab price on a gliding chair and stool for just £99.99 what a bargain! Am getting me some of that! Grin

MummyToToby · 02/06/2006 13:34

i've got all my stuff from kiddisave. i did the nursery out in the millie and boris range from mamas and papas and the prices were all a couple of pounds cheaper for every item. it all adds up!! weighed myself this morning - have put on 1 stone 6 lbs in total. not too bad - got quite a petite looking bump but when they measured it today it has grown quite suddenly since the last measurement. its quite deceiving i think. midwive reckons it'll be a nice "little" 7 lber. apparently 7 and a half is average these days. i have chosen the cot but as we have a swinging crib we won't be getting it until bubs grows out of that. got everything else and have pretty much packed my bags except for i want to get some lucozade lol and also been advised to get some anti-bac wipes for the bathroom. thinking of getting arnica tablets to so need to pop up merry hill to the health shop. was looking at all bubs' stuff and he's got way too many clothes lol!!

BigHotMama · 02/06/2006 14:03

7lb'er eh? Thats a perfect size aint it? I'm hoping for 6lb'er lol like I and Dh were when born. Really hope I dont tear!

I'm going for the Zeddy n Rhubarb M&P's collection in and saw loads of stuff reduced at kiddisave at babyshow but hadnt got enough hands to carry it all so will be getting that sorted soon. Got some gorgeous little outfits in babygap in Merry Hill, spent £45 on a little summery outfit with hat t shirt sandals and body suit, not cheap is it this baby lark? Just hope baba gets to wear it more than once.

Yes dont forget your Lucizade to keep energy up and a mini-fan for the heat and also a face spritzer to keep your face cool! I'm reading Jools Oliver's book and its got some great tips on what is really needed for hospital bag.

MummyToToby · 02/06/2006 16:19

those mini fans are rubbish. i was thinking do you think i couldp lug in a portable one?

OP posts:
BigHotMama · 03/06/2006 15:11

Lol! Like a desk fan? Am at hospital Tuesday night at 1st antenatal class so will ask the question, they may already have their own fans with any luck! Wink

MummyToToby · 04/06/2006 20:47

yeh do you think thats a bit excessive lol?maybe il just open the windows!thinking about that .. do the rooms have windows. still havent booked my tour!!!oops.

OP posts:
BigHotMama · 05/06/2006 11:56

I was having visions of you carrying a big industrial fan with your hospital bags lol. Bet I'll get toured around before you hun, you wanna get a move on Grin

diddle · 05/06/2006 13:55

mummytotoby - our nursery is all millie and boris too, looks fab. i keep peeking in and having a look, checking if maybe i missed the birth and baby is sleeping in its cot Grin I wish. onyl 3 days to go, and i am getting very very impatient. i can see this baby being 2 wks late, and i don't think i can wait anymore.

bighotmama - i loved that jools oliver book, was a fab read.

Yes they have windows that open. didn't see any fans when i had my tour though and it was bloody boiling.

BigHotMama · 05/06/2006 15:10

Heya Diddle, cant believe your due in 3 days time, how exciting! I've got 9 weeks to go yet so am counting down now, finish work in 5 weeks which I'm really looking forward to.
Let us know how your getting on, hope you dont have to wait too long Grin. (I havent even got started on the nursery) (SHIT!)

MummyToToby · 08/06/2006 13:03

any news yet diddle?

OP posts:
MummyToToby · 08/06/2006 13:47

BHM - how was antenatal? did you find out about the fans?! i hate being too hot!!is it true you can't have a waterbirth if you go over your dates? diddle does that mean you can't have one now (well there's still about 10 hours left of today so there's hope!)anyone know how long it takes to fill? also really silly question but do the pillows have those plastic coverings, cos i'm sure i would not be able to rest with all that crinkling going on. might take my own if they have.
