Sorry this is totally self indulgent and not very interesting for you guys, but would you mind casting a vote on the two options that dh and I have narrowed it down to for our expected ds (due April). Its between:

Scott Spencer Roberts
or
Spencer Scott Roberts

If you don't like either then do say...

Thanks

The boy Zephyr I knew had hippy-type parents (names=Fred & Scarlet). Zephyr had a baby brother named Rijel (like Rigel the star, but they wanted j to make it softer). So pretty normal in their circle. I think it's a great name for a boy, but doesn't seem right for a girl, IMO.

zebra · 06/01/2004 12:27

I honestly think if you don't like the possible nicknames, don't use the name. No matter what you insist, your child will end up being called or choosing to use a nickname. The number of "Matt's" I know whose mothers tried to insist they would always be Matthew, etc.

TBH Spencer sounds a bit limp-wristed to me iykwim, and Scott sounds like too much of a diminuitive to have real clout. If your ds has a lisp then Spencer will sound ridiculous. My own sons are James and Reuben, and I recently heard the name Zabian for a girl which I love.

I knew a German-Polish Krista (?Christa) who was a top concert pianist, a gregarious, funny, witty lovely woman.

Didn't mean to offend - I wasn't criticising the name Ruby, just saying is getting more popular. My friend's lovely little girl (aged 4) is a Ruby and there's another one in her class and she knows a couple more. My friend is amazed as she thought it was really unusual when she gave her the name.
I think Calista is pretty and I suppose in a few years time calista flockhart won't be so ubiquitous as she is now! Also Charis and Viola.

Hi HMC! Spencer Scott Roberts 'flows' better but then how often do you use all three names together?
Some amazing names here but the more unusual they are, the more exasperated your child might get having to spell them out every time - or have their name continually spelt or pronounced incorrectly. Or being teased about. Just a thought.

suedonim · 06/01/2004 13:00

Have you all seen the current most popular Baby Names List ? Ruby is No 50!

zebra · 06/01/2004 13:06

DD is Isabel... Or is it Isabelle, Isobel, Isabella? -- I mean, dead common name, and can people guess how to spell it correctly?! Might as well have chosen something really weird!

I wanted Catalina for DD, but DH nixed it because he reckoned people wouldn't say it right. Would have been 'Katie' for short. Now I wish I had called her Faith -- simple, and can't remember the last time I saw it mispelt.
