alisonmcg · 29/01/2012 05:27

Hello!

Thanks needles for all your hard work! Hope everyone is doing well and not getting too freaked out like I was when watching OBEM!

Has anyone had any experience of UTIs during pregnancy? I had one ages ago when I wasn't pregnant and the symptoms were really bad. I've not got anything like that at the moment but starting to think that I might have a mild infection as have some discomfort in my lower belly and yesterday on one occasion felt like I needed to pee again straight after I had although that only happened once. I've not had the other symptoms like burning when I pee or not passing much urine. Does this sound like a UTI? If so is it safe to wait until my mw appointment on wed to get it checked out or should I be going to the doctors tomorrow or is it an emergency that I should try and get treated today (as it's sunday would need to be at the hospital). This probably seems like a silly over exaggerating question sorry, it's my first pregnancy and seem to be full of them! Smile

JParkson · 29/01/2012 06:01

I had UTIs by the dozen with DD (slight exaggeration but bloody felt like it!!) and for me the main symptoms were achey kidneys and strong pee. I would wait for mw if you're seeing her Weds, but if you're worried, of course speak to a gp earlier Wink

NeedlesCuties · 29/01/2012 08:03

I had a sort-of-water-labour with DS.....

Waters broke at home at 3am. At about lunchtime they put me in the birthing pool where I stayed for hours....and hours.... and hours....

Wasn't progressing much but got to pushing stage in water (by evening time) wasn't working in the way they wanted it to and I was getting so tired, so they told me to get out.

As I swung my leg out of the birthing pool I tore, which was my 2nd degree tear, after that DS came shortly after as the gravity of me standing up helped, as did the tear which made it easier for him to get out. I didn't give birth standing up, but they helped me get down on a small bed beside the birthing pool. DS was born at 8:30pm which = 17 hour labour.

Although it was long, the pain was manageable with just gas & air as I was keen to not use anything else, plus I have low blood pressure so they refused me an epidural.

I liked the being in the water bit, but wasn't disappointed that DS wasn't born there, I think if my labour had been shorter he would have been, which is what the midwives thought would happen.

JParkson · 29/01/2012 08:39

I pass out with gas and air! Blush

I wanted to get in the pool earlier as I was a bit tired, but mws said to hold off until contractions were quite close.

I swear my waters broke as soon as I was flopped over the side of settled in the pool, but mws insist they broke later. Oh well. Either way it was lovely and fast. I think it helped she was my 2nd though.

hamncheese · 29/01/2012 08:45

Jparkson and Needles you are convincing me on water birth...may stay at the hospital in Glasgow with the under-used pools instead of going with the 5/10 min closer once I move hospital :)

Alisonmcg I had a UTI a few weeks ago... kidney pain and burning. Now (and since I got pregnant) I've got the feeling of needing to go really often, sometimes right after having been, and often there is little there. At my scan I was saying I needed to go but my bladder was no where near full. It's worst when I also am getting headaches and sickness and tiredness so seems to be purely hormonal. If you do feel you want an out of hours appointment though call NHS24. As soon as I said I was pregnant and concerned of a UTI or kidney infection they were like "go to the out of hours as soon as you can", none of the usual chit chat and assessing whether you really are sick enough for the doctor stuff. Apparently if you have any indication of a temperature and UTI suspicions it can be dangerous so you have to go straight away.

hamncheese · 29/01/2012 08:47

meant to say as well that midwife tested my urine at booking last week and no UTI so needing to go a lot wasn't an indicator for me

Lovemarmite · 29/01/2012 11:25

Hi, I wonder if what I feel is normal?
I am 12 weeks on Tuesday and am now not feeling pregnant. I have a very small bump, but maybe a few months of eating more and more rubbish, plus my breasts are not tender anymore. Has anyone else reached 12 weeks and just feel nothing in their body?
My back does ache and I've spent all weekend very teary, my DH went away for the weekend on a work thing and then has met up with a friend afterwards but it means that he won't be home until tonight.
My scan is tomorrow morning at 11 and so can't wait, in a complete scared sort of way, and my tears this weekend have most probably come from feeling lonely as I really wished we could have done something fun together plus I've not told anyone (apart from my sister and a friend that lives miles away) and so I've not felt like meeting up with anyone else. I am a little concerned that my crying is bad for the baby but perhaps I am crying because of the pregnancy hormones and having been alone, I've thought about it and attached loneliness to it. Sorry if I sound crazy!

I'm trying to resolve this by doing the cleaning (thought a clean house would make me feel better) but so far, have only managed to throw the hoover around quite madly!

Angel786 · 29/01/2012 11:28

Good lick tomorrow lovemarmite my symtoms come and go so feel different on different days...

MrsMigginslovespies · 29/01/2012 11:29

Alison I've suffered from UTIs for years on and off and it's bloody miserable. Get thee to a GP/NHS direct etc if it gets worse, as it can go up into your kidneys if left. Drink tons of water, try the sachets (they do nowt for me but I get it really badly sometimes) or you can make your own with bicarb insome water (utterly vile). The only thing that properly works is antibiotics. Oddly, though, acupuncture also works miracles and I don't get them nearly as much now. I also take every day religiously Boots Cranberry pills too which I swear by. Don't leave it too long, as it can quickly take hold and it's AWFUL. Antother rather old fashioned remedy is after you shower, swill some warm very salty water over your nether regions, as it neutralises the acid and makes it feel a bit better. Hope you get well soon, I really wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy and I DREAD getting it whilst preggers.

Anyhoo, on that lovely note, I hope everyone is having a good day (UTIs aside) and enjoying their weekend. We slept in today until 1000, forgetting the dog needed to go out, poor girl Blush. She had marmite toast crusts to make up for it, plus a big brekkie!

All your waterbirths sounds amazing. I'd secretly love to have my baby at home, as hate hospitals now, but know that I'll be having a CS, so not much chance. Not to worry, just as long as the baby is safe, I don't care.

Happy Sunday all!

Gingerelle · 29/01/2012 12:18

Hi lovemarmite I feel exactly the same - I am somewhere between 10+5 and 12+5 and feel completely normal...hard to believe there is anything going on inside me and it's stressing me out a bit too. My boobs are a bit sore still though nowhere near as bad. saw midwife on friday and she said it's totally normal to have hardly any symptoms (I've had v little since the start) but I'll be v glad to have my scan on tues and find out if things are ok.

We just agreed on a new flat today (renting) as our current place isn't big enough (we were just planning on seeing what was on the market but fell in love with this place) but now i'm worried we've agreed to this before I find out things are definitely ok.

Good luck for your scan tomorrow, and to anyone else having theirs over the next few days. For those that have had theirs - how long do you have to wait for the results of the nuchal test bit? Do they tell you on the day?

G (10+5 - 12+5.....looking forward to finding out how far on tues!)

Lovemarmite · 29/01/2012 13:05

Hi Gingerelle and Angel, thanks for your reassurance, it really helps to know that I might be normal :o

For the NT test - I am having mine privately done tomorrow, and was told the results will come two working days later by email. I am also having the NHS one, my mw told me I should do theirs definitely to be kept in the system and I am having that one on the 7th Feb when I will be 13 weeks exactly. Was told that the results if high risk will be telephoned to me the next day otherwise they will put a letter in the post and that can take 2 -5 days, so judging by my hospital's letters, a week.

Great to hear you've found a lovely flat - sounds really great and positive!
I was looking at rightmove this morning and that perked me up just looking x

Westcountrywife · 29/01/2012 19:19

My NHS NT scan/test they told me that if it came out high risk they would phone within 2 days. I would get a letter within a week if low risk. I got my low risk letter within 3 days...

JParkson · 30/01/2012 11:17

Hi ladies, how's everyone feeling today?

I have a thumping headache, my pelvis won't stop popping and some of my jeans don't fit any more

On a brighter note, DH and I took DS to see War Horse on Friday night, and I hardly cried at all! I suppose it helps that I read the book not too long ago, and the film isn't as deep as the book.

JParkson · 30/01/2012 11:17

(13 today!)

glittershoes · 30/01/2012 11:50

Hello!

I've missed so much!

So glad that most of the scans are going well.

Blackcats - so very sorry, sending lots of love and hugs and care to you and your partners.

I am a bit up and down at the moment - that sort of not quite happy feeling that most of you describe. Plus looking at finances and wanting to cry as it all seems a bit impossible! We need to move before the baby gets here and found a lovely flat (rented) in my mum's village, just about in our price band and they came down on the rent so all good but now we have discovered that the council tax band is E - £160 a month! How it is that much for a two bedroom flat I have no idea!

I have made a big list of all our incomings and outgoings for now and when I am on maternity and it all seems really tight, like £200 a month between us after our bills, food and petrol have come out tight.

So nice to hear all the good waterbirth stories - I am thinking that it may be the way forward!

Keeping fingers crossed for all the scans this weeks!

Vinolover · 30/01/2012 13:11

I absolutely loved my water birth I had with my DD. It didn't hurt nearly as much when she was coming out compared to the pain I felt when DS was born. I may just be lucky but I didnt get the 'ring of fire' with her. I desperately, desperately would love another water birth and i'm so worried I won't be able to get one (there's only one pool at the hospital). Fingers are firmly crossed!

I hope all the scans go well this week! I have mine on thursday and even though I had one two weeks ago i'm still really nervous! It's incredible how these scans reassure you for a day or two lol.

I can actually drink tea now :) I started off by just managing half a cup a few days ago and today I have managed two! It's so nice to be able to drink a hot drink again. Apart from feeling quite tired still and tiring easily, I actually feel quite normal again! I'm not sure if I should feel happy or unnerved Hmm.

Vinolover · 30/01/2012 13:15

Glittershoes I can understand how you feel with regards to money worries... We are renovating our house at the moment and still have a kitchen to build which obviously needs to be done sooner rather than later and DH's work has dried up! (He's self employed). My hours at work have been reduced now because I was off sick for a couple of weeks and now my pay will just about buy our weekly shop (if we're careful). It's such a worry but we just have to think that it will all work out in the end!

JParkson · 30/01/2012 13:36

Ditto the money concerns - DH and I tend to have ca. £200 before food and petrol!

Oh well. And now my car is facing the Grand Jury whether I resuscitate (sp?) her, or let her go to the scrap heap in the sky. I've been using my Dad's car for the past year or so; DH has been using it longer, but my Dad's insurance is stupidly expensive now (I think because of his age). Plus he thinks it's still the 3 year old car he lent us 3-4 years ago... um, no Dad... ever heard of depreciation??

So, long story short, I have a lovely 12yr old Megane I miss terribly, and keep mooning after. (She died spectacularly in Dec '10, and now needs a new computer)

So we're balancing off the running costs of my Megane vs my Dad's Liana, and at the moment the Megane is sneaking ahead as she's older, worth about £300 less than my Dad's, and proving to be much cheaper to insure. Plus her tax is only £10 a year more than the Liana (which is 6 years her junior - figure that one out!) And I'm sure she's more economical too...

Cars... who needs 'em!

NeedlesCuties · 30/01/2012 13:51

vino I also have my scan on Thursday :) Looking forward to it!

Is there anyone else on this thread who is a SAHM? Seems that lots of people work, just wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't...

JParkson I feel for you about your car worries, I don't have a clue about cars and always get the feeling that mechanics can sense it when I take my car to them.

JParkson · 30/01/2012 14:13

Nope, I'm a SAHM too.

Mechanics don't dare try me on, certainly as far as cost of parts & labour is concerned, as I used to work for a local fleet management firm, and I ran their Service, Maintenance and Repair database for 3 years... it's amazing the things you pick up chatting with dealerships about their prices!

But as much as I loved my job, I knackered my hands with tendonitis, and eventually lost my job when pg with DD. I've never been back since apart from dabbling in selling candles.

glittershoes · 30/01/2012 14:26

I was about to say 'So glad someone else has money worries' but that sounds awful doesn't it!

What I mean is, it is reassuring that we aren't the only ones - would hate to be going on about it and have everyone else say 'Goodness, haven't you got £30k in savings for your DC's university fees/pony lessons/bespoke pram!'

Tell me about cars JParkson! They cause so much trouble don't they? They may be, marginally, less cost than public transport and much more convenient but by God they are much more hassle when it gets to insurance, servicing and tax. Always another cost!

Our current landlord has just paid for a new kitchen to be put in our flat, it's being installed at the minute (counting down the days until I have an oven again and don't have to survive on takeaways and sandwiches!) so it seems silly to move, especially as the rent is so good but there really isn't enough room!
