When is everyone going on Maternity Leave out of interest.

My last day of work is 25th June by which time i will be 37+6. Will try and last this long, if i can't i have the option to leave earlier if i like. I just think i would prefer to spend as much time with the baby afterwards as possible.

littlerach · 03/02/2004 11:09

At the moment I am planning on leaving the mid of June, about 34 wks - DD was prem!! I will take a wks hol at beg , and 2 wks at end, then 6 wks unpais, so I hope to return beg March 2005, when baby is 8 months old.
My travel cot arrived yesterday - DD thought it was the baby!!

madgirl · 03/02/2004 13:01

April 16th is my last day. I want a bit of quality time with ds before the baby. and some for me too!

SpringChicken · 03/02/2004 15:02

Ahh bless your DD Littlerach

I have all the good intentions of waiting unti 38 weeks but not sure if i will actually last!

Just wanted to say thanks madgirl - having seen your post about center parcs it reminded me of how much of a great time i had last time i went so have just booked to go again - Going to Sherwood Forest in September with the new arrival and my brother and his family!

madgirl · 03/02/2004 15:13

well it was quacks really got me into the idea! i wanted to go to sherwood but it's too far really from s/london for a m/week break. if we like it we are thinking about going with bubba and ds in oct/nov!

SpringChicken · 03/02/2004 15:25

I've never been to Elvedon before but Sherwood Forest was great last time we went!

Last time was all adults on a bit of a drunken weekend so will be coompletely different this time - i was amazed at the prices though - was just looking to be nosey today, had no intention of actually booking it! !

Quackers · 03/02/2004 15:35

Hiya! Hey Jems you're a fan of C/P too!!!! We're going end of April to Oasis. Went to Sherwood in Sept and we just love it. You can't get a better holiday with little ones and even newborns are catered for!!!
I have told DD about the new baby, she's so excited and has her own little drawer for her collection of baby things. She's going to take over when it arrives!!!
Well, I decided to give up work for the next 18 months as you probably know. We will just about scrape by I hope but there is very little childcare for under 2's here. Also I was never settled in my job so it was a good way to end it. I will finish 26th March so will enjoy a good stint at home before the arrival. If I was going back to work I'd probably do until 34-36 weeks to maximise leave. It depends on your job I suppose doesn't it!
MG, had any further thoughts on C/P? Booked??

madgirl · 03/02/2004 17:22

booked it quacks!! any tips on telling 3yr old about new one?

tomkitty · 03/02/2004 21:12

My clothes are getting uncomfortably tight but it's fat not a bump. They are tight in the bum and thighs too! There are 3 other pg women at work and they all have bumps already. I am so jealous.

I will work until early June.

littlerach · 04/02/2004 08:30

I have told DD, 2.10, from the beg, as I didn't want her to think I was ill, also because of lifting her and stuff. The worst bit was when she began to tell other people who we hadn't told!!
I think I am lucky in my job, as we have a "practical" uniform of polo shirt and sweater, plus trousers. My trousers are combats so are loose. Last time, I wore suits and heels so it was such a change to start wearing flatter soes and big trousers, and I never felt smart for work.
Quacks, how old is your DD? From what I can remember, you will not be returning to your current job, will you find another one ok?

Helsbels · 04/02/2004 08:48

morning all, hope everyone is ok. I told my ds 2.5 at the same time as I told the rest of my family. He has taken it on board but I don't think he is very happy aboput it. He has started crying when we leave him at nursery and there have been the mystery headaches, he is very cuddly. Every time he eats something at home he says it is going to 'the baby in my tummy, mummy' so at least he knows where it is!!! I will finish work at 38 weeks all being well

Quackers · 04/02/2004 09:26

Great MG!!! I suppose it depends on the age what to tell them Littelrach my DD is 3 and a half. WE told her that there is a baby bro or sis in Mummy's tummy. We gave her loads of responsibilty like her own drawer and box for nappies and new clothes. We said she'll need to help the new baby and show it what to do. She is a little mother hen so no probs with her. BUT we have dug all our old things out amd she is having a bit of 'regression' already. I didn't expect that until the new baby arrives. She lay in the moses basket yesterday with her dummy and she now asks to be fed. She crawls around pretending to be a baby too. Hope this won't last when it arrives!!! We let her open any presents we get ( our family are already buying things!) Don't know if this helps but I suppose making them feel still number one must be the key thing!
Re work, I won't find another job until new baby is at least 1 as the childcare here for under 2's is almost none existent. I fancy something completely different, althought haven't decided what yet! Would love to be a doula but don't know how that would fit yet!! Have wanted to be a midwife for along time now but you can only do nurse training on the Island and have to go across for 18 months to do the midwifery bit, so that's not an option!
Sorry I'm rambling!!!!!!
Feeling lots of little movements though now and only 15 weeks. Esp when I have tea or ice cream!!!

SpringChicken · 04/02/2004 12:01

Glad everyone is doing well!

Can't believe your feeling movements already Quacks - I am soooo jealous ! ! I keep getting the odd strange feeling but as soon as i notice it it seems to stop - although, did feel like i felt a very definite kick the other day - Am i imagining it? ?

Helsbels · 04/02/2004 13:07

sc, the movements at this stage usually feel a bit like wind - they are strange poppy feelings. You can feel them earlier in 2nd and subsequent pgs. In the first it is usually around 20 weeks. The leg muscles are strong enough to kick at about 21-22 weeks - then the fun begins! I have just really started feeling poppy ones this last few days. They are really easy to mistake for a grumbly tummy!!

Quackers · 04/02/2004 14:16

I remember first time Jems I just wasn't sure until about 22 weeks as like you say I would concentrate on it and it would stop. It feel like a heartbeat sort of fluttering but in my tummy!!

littlerach · 04/02/2004 18:40

Quackers, where do you live?

Quackers · 04/02/2004 19:46

I live in the Isle of Man Littlerach. We moved over about 18 months ago! Great living here but a pain getting off!

Freddiecat · 05/02/2004 13:49

Hello! I had my second scan today and everything looks fine. The doctor has said that because my 1st baby was big (9lb 2oz) I have to have 3 more scans to check this baby's size. Also as I went 10 days overdue last time then if this baby looks like it's going to be big they will induce me earlier. Plus I have to be screened for gestational diabetes as big babies are sometimes a symptom of this.

I could have just told them that DS was big because I ate like a horse and had a craving for yoghurt in the last 4 weeks!

Feeling loads of movements now (19 weeks) - some I can feel externally but this baby is not obliging during the 50 or so times I have got DP to put his hand on my tummy!

Sorry am not posting too much by the way. Working at home now and have to keep MN to a minimum otherwise I'd do no work!

littlerach · 05/02/2004 14:02

Great news Freddiecat.
How's everyone else today?

SpringChicken · 05/02/2004 14:26

Lovely news Freddiecat - i hope we all get such a positive outcome when we have ours!

I'm doing fine today littlerach, you? Was told this morning that i look positively pregnant now - most people would probably be insulted but by my backwards thinking i am pleased Nice to know i'm not just fat now!

littlerach · 05/02/2004 15:15

I'm doing well, DD is being the cutest today, playing so nicely. Horrid wet weather means we are staying in, so she has been playing swimming with her dolls!! This means stripping off and jumping off chairs and rolling around!!
Are you in maternity clothes properly Jems?

Quackers · 05/02/2004 15:22

Sounds like great fun Littlerach, might try that now with DD and her dollies!!!!!
You must be blooming Jems!! I was told I was looking really healthy and happy today!! What great compliments we get when pg!!!
Freddiecate, greatnews about your scan!!!
Jems, meant to ask, did you say you weren't having bloods done for downs?? I have decided not to have them as I couldn't risk an amnio. I read in the Mumsnet book from the Downs Association that women under 35 have a greater risk of m/c from an amnio than carrying a downs baby. That book is fab!

Chickpea · 05/02/2004 15:42

Hello all - haven't been in touch for a while. Mad busy at work.

Freddycat - great 'mews' (sorry) on the scan front. I have the same problem with getting DP to feel the movement. If you look closely you can actually see the little movements on the outside!! But oc course the baby freezes if anyone else tries to feel it!!

I went just to hear the heart beat last Friday and it took about 3-4 minutes for the MW to find the heartbeat. I was horrified even though I knew I had felt the baby kick that morning. Last year I had two silent mcs, the second at 16 weeks. Don't all panic!! apparently it is very unusual but after 10 minutes of looking they finally sent me for a scan and the baby had just 'stopped' what looked like just the day before. As you can magine my confidence is, as a result somewhat low.

BUT now that I can feel the kicking (even if DP can't) I am so much more relaxed!!

As for maternity leave I will going right up to the due date if I can as I am the 'bread winner' (hate that expression) and DP is the house husband (hate that even more). Poor me. But I am soooo looking forward to a few months off - we plan to go away for a month during school holidays - somewhere cheap and cheerful!!

SpringChicken · 05/02/2004 15:44

Not yet Littlerach - i have one top that i wear sometimes - only really when nothing else is available. Was wearing it on Tuesday, i thought it looked hideous and think i desribed it as a single duvet inside a double duvet cover! However, one of my members of staff said it makes me look more pregnant - Might wear it all the time!

Am quite lucky that most trousers still fit OK to a certain degree - reckon i've probably got another 6 weeks before the maternity stuff really kicks in!

Quacks - Yes, we decided to not have the tests done - there were too many things in our favour - well to be honest, there wasn't one single thing going against us - with me being 19, DP being 20 both with no history of DS, Spina Bifida etc and both in general good health it just seemed pointless! We just thought in the end we would have to be very very very unlucky to have all those things in our favour and something be wrong.
Also, we both decided that if we were going to have the tests done we need to decide before hand what we do if the outcome was bad, i.e would we have an amnio, in worst case scenario would be terminate and tbh, i don't think either of us could go through either scenario.

It is a hard decision to make but i think it was the link that Mears posted that made me decide once and for all - the statistics were just outrageous! !

SpringChicken · 05/02/2004 15:47

Sounds great chickpea - the going away bit of course.
I would love to spend a big chunk of time with just me, DP and "the baby" (Hate that expression btw). Spending quality time away must be great.

Unfortunately DP only gets 2 weeks paid leave a year, we have already booked to go away in March and then he will take odd days here and there - wish we could afford for him to just take a month off and go somewhere, even just in this country, cheap and sheerful as you said!
