Hi there. I was just wondering how everyone is - Ghosty, Hilary, Bogwoppit and anybody else who is pregnant after a previous miscarriage. There seems to have been a lot of sad news re pregnancies on mumsnet recently. On the one hand, I feel like I don't want to parade being pregnant in front of those who have had an m/c - on the other hand, we need to show that there are some positive stories out there!
I am 16 weeks tomorrow. Feeling ok, over the nausea I felt from about week 7 to week 12 or 13.

Good luck on Tuesday Smelly. Let us know how you get on.

smellymelly · 15/05/2004 13:03

Hello - I had severe stomach cramps last night in bed, wore off to normal period pain after about an hour, then stopped after about 6 hours. Rang epu this morning, and they said not too much to worry about, as it has stopped and I have no spotting, still have scan tomorrow.

6 weeks now, is that a normal pain??

I am extremely constipated, could it have been that?

jellycat · 15/05/2004 15:16

Hi smelly - congratulations, I didn't realise you were expecting twins! I think the stomach pains could well be constipation - can sometimes feel a bit like period pain IME. Poor you. I get very constpipated sometimes too, and have found the usual eating lots of fruit and veg and drinking loads isn't enough to shift it, so when it gets bad I use Fybogel which is OK to use in pg. Alternatively, get some lactulose (I have some of this too but prefer Fybogel). May also be worth laying off the vitamin supplements for a few days if you're taking them because they do contain iron. Good luck for the scan tomorrow!

Jezebel - hope all's well. Thinking of you.

I still don't have a scan date. Think I shall ring the hospital in case letter has gone missing in post.

smellymelly · 15/05/2004 22:27

Thanks Jellycat, I will try the fybrogel stuff asap. Feel very bloated too, surely I can't be that big already?? I look 4 months gone!! Must be the constipation....

bunny2 · 15/05/2004 22:50

Smelly, I'm enormous too. I met a woman in the park today, she is 6 months pg with a smaller stomach than me. I fear mine is mostly due to excessive indulgence b4 getting pg. Thinking of you tomorrow.

Jezebel, how did it go today? I hope all is well.

I am already dreading my scan on Wed. If I get through it (12 wk nuchal scan) I'll be ecstatic. It is ds' 4th birthday on Thursday and I have this awful fear that his party will have to be cancelled while I have another d&c.

Quackers · 15/05/2004 23:46

Bunny, don;t worry, you're doing really well! I'm sure bubbs is absolutely finr this time and you;re cautious like all of us to protect yourself. Good luck for Wednesday! I'm big too, despite having a samll for dates baby, I'm enourmous!!
Good luck smelly too!!!!! Be thinking of you!
Jelly did you ring up about your scan?

bunny2 · 16/05/2004 10:12

Quacks, hello. How are you? Have you had any more news on your baby? What do you think you are having this time? I am sure mine is a boy.

Jezebel · 16/05/2004 13:23

Hello my friends. I wish you all the best but will be popping away for a while (tho will still come back to check on you). Not good news at scan. D&C today. Then appt with consultant n 2 weeks to find out whay this keeps happening. Don'yt worry - cal me insane but I am still confident I and dh will get there and have 2 more babies. Lots of love

Jezebel · 16/05/2004 13:24

BTW Bunny good luck tomorrow. I will check on you. Lots and lots of positive vibes!!!

lazyeye · 16/05/2004 13:26

Jezbel - so sorry. You be good to yourself, even though you sound like you have things sort of sorted, I'm sure it hurts like hell. I've had 2 m/c and I know they take a while to get over........hope to see you back on here soon pet.

smellymelly · 16/05/2004 14:03

Jezebel

Bunny - you will be just fine - 12 weeks already?? Wow! Will be thinking of you tomorrow. And hope DS has a great birthday.

Well - There were 2 heartbeats today!!!

So all looks well. But there were other people before me who came out in tears, so it was a bit of a reality check.

I still amazed that I can lose a Fallopian tube, and then get pregnant with twins, 6 months later. But they still keep warning me that they do not know if it will stay as 2. Bless the fabulous nurses though, they have offered me another scan at 8 weeks, so I don't have to wait till 12 weeks to see them again. Just to be nice!! How often does that happen on the NHS????

I'm sure I'm having 2 boys, by the way.

bunny2 · 16/05/2004 17:52

Jezebel, I am so sorry. I cant believe you are going through this again. Your positive attitude is a real inspiration and you will get there, I know it. Bunnyxxxxx

Smelly, your news is wonderful. I am really glad things are looking good. Your remaining fallopian tube must be a damn good one!!

Counting the hours now till 9.40 tomorrow, the moment of truth.

Quackers · 16/05/2004 23:38

Jezebel, I'm so sorry it;s bad news. I really really am. I so hoped that you would have got good news. I know we've mentioned this before but have you read Lesley Regan;s book when a miscarriage happens? IT's very encouraging and I highly recommend it to reassure you for the future. I couldn;t have got by without it. The facts she gives that stick in my mind are that 20-25% of women will have 1 m/c, 5% will have 2 in a row and 1% will have 3 in a row. She gives odds of about 75% success even after 3. The reasons for m/c are very well covered in her book. Hugs {{{{{}}}} HTH
Smelly, great news!!!
Bunny, will be thinking of you and will log on tommorow to see how it went. Hope the eve isn;t dragging too much for you! Thanks for asking though I'm fine. Heading towards 30 weeks now! I'm so uncomfrotable at night but am just delighted to be here and really looking forward to new DD/DS! Just have to go through the birth first! I;ve no idea what I'm having! I will be scanned agin in 3 weeks and then agin at 36 weeks, but basically we're just keeping an eye on the littl'n and they probably won;t let me go overdue, which would be great!

jellycat · 17/05/2004 01:17

Sad news Jezebel , I'm really sorry. Good luck with the consultant.

bunny, lots of luck for tomorrow! It seems amazing that we have reached this milestone already. I shall be eagerly awaiting your news.

Smelly, that's great news and lovely that you're getting another scan so soon.

I've finally got my scan date, it's for a week on Thursday when I'll be 13 weeks. The information from the hospital says they scan at between 12 and 14 weeks (I thought it was 11-13 for a nuchal, but there you go) so that is OK. I wish it was sooner, but at least I feel better now I have a date.

bunny2 · 17/05/2004 11:30

Quacks and Jellycat, thank you . I am almost throwing up with nerves at the moment, I've been awake worrying since 5.00. I'm almost tempted not to go, they say ignorance is bliss. Spk laterXX

Jezebel, hope you are doing ok. I was thinking about you and how unfair it all is last night. Be kind to yourself.

bunny2 · 17/05/2004 14:49

I knew it would be bad news . The baby is alive and kicking but I have a higher risk of Downs (1 in 44) and I am shocked and upset. Dont know what to do.

smellymelly · 17/05/2004 18:21

Oh Bunny - you must be so scared.,.. but please do not worry, it is not conclusive. Are they going to do another test??

Friends of ours had a worrying result on a blood test, and had amnio(I think) and everything was just fine. Their dd is now 4mths old and beautiful.

eyelash · 17/05/2004 19:03

bunny2 - I have not posted here for a while but knew it was your scan around now and wanted to check how you are.

Great news that all is well with the baby. Re downs risk - please please look at the positive. A 1 in 44 risk means you have roughly a 97% chance of having a baby without downs. And speaking as someone with an uncle and nephew with downs - would it be an absolutely the worst thing to happen to you and your family. Do some searching on the special needs section as there are lots of discussions there about this issue. Also you can have an amnio to find out but that obviously carries a miscarriage risk (as I am sure you are well aware). I am sorry if this post is coming across wrong but your odds are still very good

bunny2 · 17/05/2004 19:31

Hi, thanks Smelly and Eyelash. Eyelash, I always knew at 38 there was a higher risk of Downs and I am quite optimistic that I will cope well. My biggest fears are the increased risk of another mc and of other chromosonal problems such as Turners, Edwards and Pataus. Some of these are incompatible with life and I think losong a baby at full term or in early infancy would send me insane with grief. I am so p*ssed of that I have more to worry about now, this has been hard enough.

Quackers · 17/05/2004 20:09

Bunny, I'm really pleased that baby is fine. Please please don;t get lost in this. I saw a programme just this morning about nuchals and AFP tests. The maternal age plays a vital part in the odds they give you. It is not conclusive as you know, it is a figure. You do have the option of the amnio, would you consider it, or are you not sure yet because of the m/c risk? Remember a 1 in 10 result would mean a 10% chance of the baby being downs, your risk is much lower. Let us know what you decide. Hugs {{{}}}}

hana · 17/05/2004 20:36

Jezebel - have only just saw your news. Life is utterly unfair, I was really rooting for you and then this comes along. I hope you've got lots of supprt and love around you. YOu don't sound defeated and you've got your appt soon with consultant, so that's a positive. Little steps. I'm thinking about you.

Bunny - that's still a 43/44 chance which is high that you won't. I'm also at an increased risk for DS given that I've had one already - and with regards to other chromosomal problems that you mentioned - all were given to me as possibilities when I had my 12 week scan last summer. They could see so much at that point and I was told it was def one of the 4 and that CVS or amnio would confirm, and I was also told that it wouldn't make it. It was that serious so early on. I'm sure that everything would have been picked up at this scan, the machines are really sophisticated....not sure why I'm saying all this. I guess you like most of us here take it one day at a time. Do some research and reading - I've done loads b/c of the increased risk. I'm sure if it's one of the others something would have shown itself by now. Please don't worry/
(haha what a stupid thing to say, if anyone else says that to me....) but I mean well.
hana

bunny2 · 17/05/2004 20:40

hello mates! Hana, were you told your baby def had dwons or turners or pataus or edwards syndrome? How could they say it definately had one of them? Was it just by a nuchal scan? Also was it at that stage you were told the baby wouldnt make it?

hana · 17/05/2004 21:17

bunny - I've just been reading the other thread, you sound really anxious.....it's so different from the ignorant bliss I seem to think most pregnant women experience. Of course no one here!

I was told the baby wouldn't make it very soon after the scan at Queen Charlotte's, I mean within minutes. The consultant spent a long long time scanning, looking at everything, I was too scared to look. It was the first thing he said after he finished scanning and we were in his office. He wasn't able to say for sure what it was, but def one of the 4 you've mentioned.

As the risk from CVS made no difference in my case, I had it the same afternoon as the scans (it wasn't a nuchal fold scan - it was the standard dating scan at my local hospital and then I was sent to Queen Charlotte's immediately). We had to wait about a week after the CVS to know for sure what it was. So so many conceptions resulting in a fetus/baby with DS don't make it, there are so many problems to overcome. We were sent home with leaflets about all 4 conditions.

about the sickness thing - I was really really sick last year with that pregnancy. Am really really sick now too. YOu really can't read too much into things like that, drive us more mad than we already are.

bunny2 · 17/05/2004 21:21

thanks hana. I have completely monopolised mumsnet all afternoon and have done lots of googling. Apparently a nuchal scan can be qunreliable if not done correctly. I have now decided my sonographer was probably inexperienced and didnt know what she was doing! I keep reading, on many sites, that a measurement under 3mm is ok, well mine was 2.6 so that is good isnt it? Are you going to ahve a nuchal scan? I wish I hadnt, if only I could turn back time.

bunny2 · 17/05/2004 21:22

sorry, to follow on from your post, the consultant could clearly see a problem at 12 weeks? That must have been so sad for you. Did they not offer a chromosonal examination of the fetus after you had miscarried?
