Hello there - Smile

This is a thread for anyone in the south Northamptonshire/north Oxfordshire area who may like to say hi, and give us any wisdom about the Horton and surounding maternity units.

I'm due early Oct, have not had any scan yet and am booking in with beards mill clinic. Going tmrow for bloods. My local hospital is the Horton, Banbury. Love to hear from you .....

Have you ladies had blood tests in advance of your scans next week so that they can give us the downs syndrome results on the scan day? Or do they take blood from us at the scan? Anyone know? I presume that if they take blood on the day that we wont get the test results the same day...?

I gave blood samples at my midwife booking appointment, but I dont think they are the ones used for the downs syndrome /nuchal fold test thingie...

Any ideas?

Hi rocklover Smile Thank you for the lovely review of Horton, and sorry to hear about your experience at Northampton - I will definately be having a look round the labour ward - but my MW said said 'wait a bit till you have a bigger bump - or you might feel silly!' So i will. Are you expecting again now rocklover?

agbag - i'm afraid i could bore for england on the subject of the 12 week blood tests 'cos of all the research i've been doing in the name of worrying! But in a nut shell ...
.... the blood tests you had at your booking in appt. would not be used for detecting abnormalities in babe because the optimum time for that to be tested for (in mums blood) is between 10 to 13 weeks ish. Earlier the better i recently learned.

It seems that some NHS practices call mum in for blood to be taken a couple of weeks b4 the scan - so that, as you say, the results can be given all at once. In our area i think the blood and the scan are done on the same day at 12 weeks, and you have to wait for the results for up to 2 weeks in a letter (good news) or phone call (potentialy bad news). I HATED that idea. Because of my age i am worrying myself silly over this, and waiting 2 weeks jumping everytime the phone rang would kill me!

So i've gone private for my 12 week scan, and the clinic took my blood at 10 weeks (and a quick peek scan free of charge which was lovely) and i'll get all the results in one go then at my propper scan on Tuesday.

I've probably oversimplified here - but hope it helps x

Hi Misty, no not pregnant any more thankfully lol, just gave birth 8 weeks ago to my DS in Torbay hospital, Devon which is near where I live now.

I have my 6yr old DD and DS now, so that's probably enough for me as I am completely rubbish at pregnancy and birth! Do you actually live in Banbury? My parents still live there, so I visit frequently and I lived there between the ages of 6 and 24, it's a nice town. :) Good luck for whatever you decide to do.

apples82 · 04/04/2011 09:28

Thanks misty0 for the info on the blood tests. I thought tomorrow i'd get told results for downs, but I guess they'll tell me fold results and then the blood results will follow.

My MS is just horrible today, I wish i'd stayed at home Sad

Roll on tomorrow for scan. Good luck too misty0 and agbag for Thursday Smile

AgBag · 04/04/2011 10:13

Yes thank you for the blood info... I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer for the results.... Also good to hear another positive report about the Horton.

My morning sickness was dreadful over the weekend, I lost count after being sick around 7 times on Friday... urgh. I really hope its true what they say about it easing off after 12 weeks!

I hope your scans go well tomorrow!
x

I had my scan this morning. WOW, I didn't expect the picture to be so clear, the bean's face in profile was so detailed, and you could see fingertips and everything.

My EDD hasn't changed, still 17th October, and the little bean is 6cm long.

Bean was bouncing around like anything, wouldn't keep still, kept flipping Grin

Phew! I can exhale now.

misty0 i'm waiting to hear from you this afternoon Smile

misty0 · 05/04/2011 12:36

ooooooooooooooh it's SO exciting isn't it apples? Well done! Did they guess at the sex? You don't have to say what it is if you don't want to - just wondered if they could tell???

Were you like me with my sneaky scan and just lay there going "Oh .... oh wow"! Instead of asking all the questions i had in my head b4 it started, lol

So pleased for you Grin Mines at 4.15 ...... fingers crossed.

misty0 I could barely muster anything other than 'oh my god, oh my god'. Neither could my DH! It was so lovely, the LO was so bouncy Smile.

I didn't ask anything, and barely took in a word the lady said. It was only at the end that I spluttered out about the date, and she said it was what the estimated date was, and doesn't need to be changed at all which was quite nice.

It is suddenly very real. Up until this point I kept saying 'there's no point thinking about this until we know there is a bean in there'. I did 3 tests throughout the 3 months but I still didn't believe them.

Gotta start thinking about telling work etc. Won't do that for three weeks, as not seeing family until then and there's no way i'm telling work before family.

Do let us know how yours goes misty!

Hi Oxon ladies. Just wanted to say that we have a MN Meet-up once a week in Oxford if any of you are ever at the JR or in town, you are more than welcome. This is our thread.

The next one is at 12pm on Friday 8th April in Summertown Wine Cafe.

misty0 · 05/04/2011 19:24

I'ts not good. Very bad actually

tears

sorry to bring this down, but i've been given awful odds of abnormalities and have to wait for an app. asap for cvs at JR. hopefully th ey will ring me tmrow.

odds are 1 in 3. Cant stop crying

Sorry again. I'll keep you posted

apples82 · 06/04/2011 07:36

Oh misty0, i'm so sorry. So sorry. What is a cvs?

Thinking of you- hug hug hug.

apples82 · 06/04/2011 07:38

misty0 I just googled about cvs. Once you have the results you'll have a much clearer picture. Good luck with it, let us know when you hear.

Lots of hugs coming your way Smile

misty0 · 06/04/2011 07:51

thank you apples. Sad

cvs stands for something something Sampling. Its an invasive test (big needle basicly) that finds out for 100% sure if baby has an abnormality. These tests have a miscariage risk ... great. Bit of a panic because most consultants wont test after 13 weeks - i'm 13 weeks tmrow. JR should ring me today hopefully.

I've prepared myself for the worst - a termination. I'm in bits.

I REALY need to pull myself together cos its my daughters birthday today. S'posed to be going out for a meal tonight.

I feel awful being so full of doom on here too .... i'm going to do a new post on here to see how others have coped. Doesn't mean i've deserted this thread!

AgBag · 06/04/2011 14:56

Sorry to hear your news misty0 and I hope the next tests give you good results.

I've got my scan tomorrow eeek.

apples82 · 06/04/2011 15:00

Good luck for tomorrow AgBag, let us know how you get on Smile

AgBag · 06/04/2011 15:01

I know I don't know you and I never quite know whats appropriate to say on mumsnet.... but if you were a close friend I'd remind you that odds are only odds, and theres still a chance that those next test results will be fine. So do try and stay as positive as possible. I can't imagine how it must feel to be in your position... but I really hope it all goes well for you and that you manage to enjoy celebrating your daughter's birthday today x

AgBag · 06/04/2011 15:03

Thanks apples82. I'm quite nervous about it actually, but also excited. Was so pleased to hear your lovely scan news.

apples82 · 06/04/2011 16:02

Thank you, we found ourselves giggling in the waiting room whilst waiting for the scan. Nervous tension I guess. The other folks waiting were looking at us like we were on drugs!

apples82 · 07/04/2011 09:24

misty0 good luck for this morning, waiting to hear from you. Sending you lots of hugs for you and yours xxx

AgBag · 07/04/2011 15:48

The scan went really well! 'He' wriggled about quite a bit! It was great to see, and am now so excited to start telling everyone!

misty0 hope yours went well too x

whomovedmychocolate · 07/04/2011 15:55

Hiya, not pregnant but I had DS at the Horton, sorry to say it wasn't a great experience. The Radcliffe with my daughter was better at least before she was born, post natal was a bit grim there too.

CVS risks change with the consultant who is doing it - I had an amnio in Oxford with DS and the consultant had never had a miscarriage caused by CVS or Amnio but with some consultants the risk is much higher. Good luck. I paid £100 for expedited testing with TDL and got the results next day. Worth not having to wait IMHO.

apples82 · 07/04/2011 20:55

AgBaggreat news, pleased it all went well for you. Did your EDD change much?
