Hello there - Smile

This is a thread for anyone in the south Northamptonshire/north Oxfordshire area who may like to say hi, and give us any wisdom about the Horton and surounding maternity units.

I'm due early Oct, have not had any scan yet and am booking in with beards mill clinic. Going tmrow for bloods. My local hospital is the Horton, Banbury. Love to hear from you .....

Just had a look at those Horton reviews. It seems all the bad ones were from 2007,8 +9.

2010 +2011 are all glowing i think. Praps it was a staffing issue thats been resolved? Lets hope so.

Well whoever of us gets there first for a scan, have a nose round for all of us and report back Smile

I had heard terrible things about the Horton, but as I say, it was excellent. Maybe they've improved recently?

Anyway... I have my booking in appt today! I'm already noticing the difference between the way they treat the first time mums (see them all the time, kid gloves) and the way they treat the other mums (ignore as much as possible!)

I can't remember, can they hear the heartbeat at ten weeks?

Hope everyone is well, ms sucks, the only thing that's keeping me going is that last time I felt AMAZING in the second trimester, so I hope that happens this time as well!

misty0 · 25/03/2011 09:04

morning demonchild

I saw the heartbeat at 10 weeks exactly! It was wonderful. I think they ccan see the heart beat from about 7 onwards.

Roll on 2nd trimester ...

I want second trimester too, my first ends on April 10th so i'm burning holes in the calendar looking at that date Smile

Enjoy your booking appointment today demonchild

DemonChild · 25/03/2011 14:06

Thank you, it was great! Nice midwife (makes all the difference), DH works shifts so he was able to come and she was very pro-VBAC. She said the Horton runs a VBAC clinic actually, so whilst the consultant might push towards a CS at least I've got the midwives on side.

All a little early, but I'm a planner...! Have just ordered a birthing ball and Ina May Gaskin's 'Guide to Childbirth' - bring it on!

apples82 · 25/03/2011 14:07

Sorrry to ask, I should learn more, but what is a V-BAC?

Glad the appointment went good Smile

misty0 · 25/03/2011 16:58

Vaginal Birth After Miscariage i think apples. Correct me if i'm wrong demon.

I found out today that if you want a tour of the labour ward at Horton you ring 'maternity reception' and just book it. They go round 3 Saturdays out of every month aparently. MW said wait till you've got a bump or you'll feel silly.

Demon - i'm so wanting to buy stuff...but (apart from a couple of maternity tops 'cos my mid half is so rounded already) i just daren't! I'm not normaly superstitious like this but i just have it in my head that if i buy stuff something bad is gonna happen.

Someone please tell me i'm being an idiot Hmm

Yay glad you had a good booking in appointment demonchild The were very good when I was having my VBAC with DS2. I am hoping that I don't have to see a consultant this time as I had a successful VBAC already.

TBH I found that the consultants didn't really care. They just checked everything was normal and then weren't bothered. The wait for them was agonising though. I waited an hour an half once when consultant was called to an emergency.

apples82 · 26/03/2011 16:16

ha ha mistyo, your pregnancy brain has begun!!! Grin

apples82 · 28/03/2011 10:28

Morning one and all,

Hope everyone's doing ok. I'm currently suffering a wave of MS, yet it's either first thing in the morning, or about 9pm at night. I've taken to living off fox's glacer mints which kinda help. And i've realised ice cream is not my friend Sad

A week tomorrow until my scan. Feels like ages that's its taken to come around. I'm 11 weeks today.

AgBag · 30/03/2011 14:12

I've been suffering from constant MS, I wish it came in waves!
Feeling really crappy with it. Hope you are feeling better. I really hope its true that it calms down after the first trimester.

Tummy appeared to double in size yesterday.... I think I've got a proper baby bulge now and am having to undo the top button of my jeans when I'm sitting down!

misty0 · 30/03/2011 19:11

Hello ladies

week to go apples ay? it'll fly by Smile mines next tuesday - am excited and terrified at the same time.

agbag i know what you mean about a sudden tum. I've bought a 'swingy tunic' top from tesco in a size up from normal for a bit of room, and i've worked out its my waist bands in my skirts and leggings ect. that have been giving me tummy ache (dooooh) - so must get some mati' ones -

Have felt a bit down recently for no good reason. Weepy and stuff. i think i desperately want to 'bond' with this baby - but worried about scan results next week and possible consequences ..... i'm gonna set myself off again at this rate! Sad

misty0 i've been on that emotional rollercoaster too. My DH says i've had really erratic mood swings too. I guess i've noticed too that i'm suddenly snapping etc.

My sleep has become patchy as i'm up to go to the loo three or four times a night. Just dog tired and guess i'm stressing inside about scan.

Saw MW yesterday to give her bloods and urine. She told me to stop fretting, i've had no bleeding etc and no cramping- she told me to just enjoy this part.

Roll on Tuesday for both of us!!! I'll jump on once i'm done to let you all know how it goes. Misty0 I'll check early evening for a post from you Smile

misty0 · 31/03/2011 11:51

Bless you apples Smile

Yours is in the am isn't it ... i'll be thinking of you. And i'll post here when i'm home. It such a shame that such an exciting thing as this scan (first ever for my OH) is so full of stress as well isn't it?

My MW is very laid back and keeps telling me to 'enjoy' as well ...... sigh.

Anyway! On a happier note - i think i've felt some TINY movements. Real tiny, just a wiggly twitching deep down inside. And only once a day or so ..... but i just know it's the baby. This is my no.4 so my muscles are shot (some say this means you can feel more) and i know all those funny little wrigglings very well now Grin

Oh - and i've had to start on the fibre-gel! Shock This is a first for me. The joy of pregnancy has no bounds.....

OP posts:
AgBag · 31/03/2011 11:58

I hope your scans go well on Tuesday. Mine is on Thursday. I can't wait! I'm desperate to start telling people our news. I did have to have an early scan at 8 weeks because I started bleeding - which stopped fairly quickly - and the scan said everything was ok. But having the 12 week scan will be wonderful to ensure that everything is still ticking along nicely.

I'm also sleeping very strangely. In fact I'm sleeping a huge amount. I work from home (writing up my PhD thesis), so I'm fortunate that I can get away with as much sleep as I want. I seem to be sleeping up to 11hrs a day... a bit worrying really as it seems a huge amount... I got so tired yesterday I just laid on the bed for a rest and woke up 2 hours later! I couldn't believe it! I hope I'm not sleeping 'too' much!

apples82 · 31/03/2011 14:17

AgBag i'm sleeping a crazy amount too. Yesterday I fell asleep in a school car park waiting to pick up DH (he's a teacher). His fellow teachers were amused when they walked past the car Blush.

I've tend to find that sometimes after work i'll need an hour nap, and then i'm in bed for 9/9.30pm. At the weekends i've been known to go to bed at lunchtime and sleep for four hours, then again go to bed at 9pm! I've turned in to a right old lady!!!

Misty0, yep mine's in the morning. It's my first LO so this'll be the first time at a scan for both me and DH. We're both really excited, it's so close now.

What's fibre-gel? I presume something to do with fibre and therefore constipation? If it is, then i'm feeling your pain too, that aspect of pregnancy is not welcome Blush

misty0 · 31/03/2011 16:29

Wow agbag, what's your PhD in? Obstetrics by any happy chance? Grin

You're amoung friends when it comes to the sleeping ... I NEVER, EVER nap usualy. However - these last couple of weeks i've had to have a nap before my main snooze - and then - like you - go to bed at 9.30 Shock Great that you've got your scan on Thurs. We'll be waiting ..... Smile

Yep, apples, fibre-gel is a 'shifter', lol. I confess to taking regular amounts of senacot when unpregnant. I've done it on and off for years. For weight loss and 'cos of a bit of a control thing. Funnily enough not for constipation.

But now .... i find i do need something for constipation, and i cant take senacot because it stimulates the womb as well as the bowel. Not good obviously. So ... fibre gel it is! It's safe for pg and is a simple cold drink. Little sachets which disolve. Cheap and hopefully effective. Just adds bulk and the ladies on here seem to sear by it. I DO NOT want piles ......

OP posts:
apples82 · 01/04/2011 08:18

misty0 what does it taste like?

I didn't know that about senacot stimulating the womb, lucky I haven't taken any yet!

agbag we want news on Thurs from your scan Smile

misty0 · 01/04/2011 10:05

Tastes fine apples, bit gritty - but just like kids orange drink. And you only need half a glass.

The trick is to drink it QUICK! B4 it starts to thicken.....I think it goes like wall paper paste.

OP posts:
apples82 · 01/04/2011 10:26

Eew, wall paper paste. Ha, i'll try to leave it as a last resort then! Smile

AgBag · 01/04/2011 11:05

Good to hear I'm not the only one sleeping a crazy amount.
misty0 PhD is in engineering (specifically slum housing in developing countries).... after researching one topic for 3 years its enough to put anyone to sleep!

Fortunately I'm not suffering from constipation (yet).. hope its not too painful for you. But the horrid MS is more than making up for any pain I'm missing out on elsewhere.

Yep will share my scan news with you after Thursday. Can't wait!

RockLover · 01/04/2011 11:08

Hi, my sister gave birth to her DS at the Horton last Feb. She said that all the staff were lovely to her and she received a very high level of care. DS is her first child and she definately wants another, so I'm pretty sure her first experience didn't put her off lol. Have you had a look round the maternity unit there? That might help you decide if you want your DC there.

If you are considering different hospitals, whatever you do DON'T go to Northampton General. I had my DD there and it was a horrible experience from beginning to end thanks to crappy midwives who just couldn't wait to get off shift. My aftercare was particularly rubbish, I was left with open woundss after I had an allergic reaction to the c section dressing (it pulled my skin off) and I was refused a dressing!

Definitely go to the Horton, I have only ever heard good things from people about it. :)
