Planning to see how the next week goes before going back to nursery. DS is 2 years and 9 months. Can wee and poo in potty, knows when he's going and tells us, and is going an hour or two between wees so I think he's ready. One accident so far.

We started yesterday with dd2. She is nearly 3 and seems completely ready but so far has no interest in sitting on the potty until bed time. She was dry all day yesterday apart from in her pull up at nap time but just had an accident.

itakephotos · 29/12/2019 13:33

We're starting tomorrow! Previously tried in the summer but I was 37 weeks pregnant and not very patient!
DD is 2yr11 and DS is now 3 months so should have a bit more time to spend with her properly. She definitely knows what to do in the potty so hoping it's an easy one!
Been telling her today thats it's last day in nappies and she seems excited to use the potty tomorrow.

ChristmasCarcass · 29/12/2019 13:34

It was about 20mins the first time, no more than 5 mins subsequent times.

The difference between a seat and the potty is he got a big fuss, a sticker, a selfie and sweeties the first time he peed on the potty! Maybe slight overkill, but we definitely made it a big thing about how clever he was to encourage him to do it more.

.....need to charge the iPad!!! Grin

ChristmasCarcass · 29/12/2019 13:36

Grandpoplar congratulations to your DS! I have to admit, I always position DS myself because I think working out the direction of pee is a bit beyond him still.

newhousestress · 29/12/2019 13:48

Welcome to @ChristmasCarcass @itakephotos @SnugglySnerd @Grandpoplar ! Good luck!

We've had a wee and poo in the potty this morning. He had a pull-up on for an hour whilst we did an activity (that he really couldn't be wet or dirty in) but only did a little bit in so hopefully not too much of a set back. And we won't do it again. Grin

Thanks, he has a habit of constantly fiddling with his willy when he’s out of pants so it’s always the risk of spray!!

We just had a poo accident - that was such fun to deal with 😑

newhousestress · 29/12/2019 13:49

Love the melting comment!

Sometimes I think they're better at nursery because everyone else is doing it and they have quite defined routines for changing and sitting on the potty.

What are you all doing about naps? We’ve gone back into nappies because he’s a VERY deep sleeper. But maybe that’s a backwards step?

Grandpoplar · 29/12/2019 15:15

Mine’s just dropped his daytime nap but my friend recommended the DryNites bed mats which you use to line the mattress - I’ve basically lined my living room floor in these!

newhousestress · 29/12/2019 15:23

I've put pull-ups on but they've been dry so maybe we'll drop them in a day or two?

SnugglySnerd · 29/12/2019 16:03

Thanks for the welcome!

We're using pull ups for naps and nay longish cat journeys. Their was fine for dd1 skin hoping dd2 will cope with it too. Ds next... they are twins so hoping once she's cracked it he will just copy...

Grandpoplar · 29/12/2019 16:12

Oh no, we’ve just had a bout of tears - he’s tired and a bit fed up by it all. I asked him if he wants to put a nappy back on and he said yes and then no. It’s been over a couple of hours since his last wee (compared to every 25 mins or so this morning). Any advice?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/12/2019 16:39

Pull ups for naps and bed time for us too- nursery do it to. I’m not stressing about dry nights- apparently that’s difficult until they can produce the hormone that does that or something...I vaguely read about it.
Anyway no advice for no peeing, my LO still not peeing - however another poo on the potty....

Grandpoplar · 29/12/2019 17:34

We’re putting things on hold tonight and trying again tomorrow. After the tears, my son fell asleep - think he’s worn out from Christmas and training. When he woke up if he wanted to wear pants or a pull up and he chose the latter. We’ll try again tomorrow, hopefully things will go better...

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/12/2019 17:39

Good luck Granpoplar- May be better not to give him such a choice, kids don’t tend to love change. I appreciate it can be easier said than done at times.

Grandpoplar · 29/12/2019 17:52

Yeah I see what you’re saying, I wasn’t going to give him a choice but he was getting so upset and worked up I didn’t want him to have a negative association with the potty. My son is very stubborn with change.

We’ll try in earnest tomorrow.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/12/2019 18:06

again not saying this will work, every child is nicely
Difficult in different ways - but perhaps try positive definitive language “right we’re a big boy today we don’t need nappies, nap time it’s pull up time- right nap over back to big boy pants” give him other choices to feel empowered “do you want to sit on the potty or toilet”

newhousestress · 29/12/2019 18:48

I think they need to be quite full in order to go, it's a skill to be able to do a wee when there's not much there. DS went 2 hours this afternoon with nothing then did a massive wee in the potty. I don't offer the potty more than hourly. We've had accidents and successes today, just trying not to piss him off Grin by asking too much.

Grandpoplar · 29/12/2019 19:02

Yeah I think he was getting too tired and stressed by me sitting him on the potty half hourly. He wanted lots of cuddles when he woke up from his nap, which is unusual for him.

loveautum · 29/12/2019 21:34

I popped on here and found your thread. I'm starting on New Year's Day as off work until the 13th of Jan. DD is 2.4 and currently reading "oh crap potty training"book as first child and no idea. I haven't started anything at home with potty training at all, but nursery have been getting her to sit on the potty and she sits on the potty at friends houses and asks me to change her nappy as soon as she had done a wee or poo. I'm actually just thinking do I have enough cotton leggings that fit her for the part of going commando with all the accidents Grin

ChristmasCarcass · 29/12/2019 21:48

Well the morning went fine (peed in the potty three times between 9am and 2pm, one small pee accident when he did a poo in his pants, but told us straight away).

Then post-nap, he did three small pees on the floor over the space of about an hour. Only a few drops, and didn’t need to go again once he was on the potty. Last one was a bit bigger, caught about 50% of it in the potty. Tantrum after the last one saying he wanted his nappy back on. Luckily it was bath time by then so nappy was due to go back on anyway.

I think you’re right Grand, tiredness doesn’t help, and there’s no point in making the potty a battleground. Mine is bloody stubborn when he wants to be too! Why oh why do we try to potty train them at the height of their “no!” phase?

newhousestress · 29/12/2019 22:17

Hi @loveautum sounds like a plan! Ten pairs of pants here and 8 pairs of joggers. Grin

Great @newhousestress I'll be back with an update later in the week. I feel like I have a little support group 😌
