Planning to see how the next week goes before going back to nursery. DS is 2 years and 9 months. Can wee and poo in potty, knows when he's going and tells us, and is going an hour or two between wees so I think he's ready. One accident so far.

That's a good point about extra clothes in the nursery bag, dd goes back on Monday so I should get that ready over the weekend.

blckcurt · 02/01/2020 17:06

Exactly the same here @Grandpoplar

He goes to nursery two days and a child under two days. Childminder has even asked for spare shoes as well as spare clothes and underpants

Grandpoplar · 03/01/2020 09:02

@blckcurt Good point about spare shoes! I’m hoping and praying things we have fewer accidents by next week as I fear that at his current rate, it’ll be too much for his CM/pre-school to deal with! Although I guess as childcare professionals they’ll have seen it all.

If we don’t have much improvement then I’m half wondering whether to put him in pull ups because he is actually starting to recognise and tell me when he has done a wee and his pull up is wet. But ask for childcare to still introduce the potty routine. At least that’s my fall back plan.

Grandpoplar · 03/01/2020 09:05

When I say he is actually starting to recognise and tell me when he has done a wee and his pull up is wet I am talking about his night time pull up.

newhousestress · 03/01/2020 09:13

DS off to nursery, sent 6 sets of clothes and spare shoes! He did a massive wee in the potty before going thankfully.

@Grandpoplar I have occasionally with previous DC used pants under a pull-up in similar situations. So they feel wet and recognise the wetness but there's no massive accident.

I am still sitting dd on the potty every 30 mins. She's been dry for a few days. Wondering whether to reduce it to hourly and see if she can tell me herself if she needs to go in between.
2 poos in pants yesterday. I think that's going to be a long process...

blckcurt · 03/01/2020 12:00

So.... decided to start taking him every hour to the toilet instead of relying on me asking if he needs to go/him telling me he needs to go.

Worked great so far.

Made it until now without an accident (the best we've done so far!).

The accident only happened because we got to the play centre and the toilet was in use. He held for a few mins but couldn't hold any longer

YukoandHiro · 03/01/2020 15:43

Day one here = disaster. Lots of accidents, some immediately after getting off the potty for one of our tries.
Not sure if she's ready but don't want to confuse her, and I followed her lead as she has been asking to use the potty.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/01/2020 16:10

some immediately after getting off the potty for one of our tries yes we had this the first few days....leave them on the potty for longer, an ipad and snacks if needs be.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/01/2020 16:12

Half a day at nursery today apparently 1 accident. Im actually quite worried about how to start going out and about as LO clearly forgets to say potty or toilet in the midst of playing and having fun. I cant face another weekend in the house, i need to venture out, see people, go to soft play.

YukoandHiro · 03/01/2020 16:19

Ok that's reassuring @OnlyFoolsnMothers - I'll try for a few more days and then see how it goes.

It really reminds me of weaning: something that disrupts the equilibrium you've finally found, but has to be done. Weaning was nightmare for us, so maybe that's why I'm feeling so negative about it after this difficult first day.

LolaLollypop · 03/01/2020 16:32

Daughter now seems to have regressed quite a lot. Whenever I ask her to use the potty she says NO! have had hardly any wees in the potty over Christmas despite nursery telling me before she's doing really well and is ready to take the next step!
I'm worried because baby no2 is nearly here she's regressing a bit - a couple of times she's said "I wear nappy, I'm a baby".

Any advice? I haven't pushed it at all, wonder if I should give it a proper break then re-try in a few weeks. (DD is 2yrs 5 months).

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/01/2020 16:38

LolaLollypop I really recommend the oh crap method, I read so many good things on mn that i bought it and read it. I have far from cracked potty training after a week but like the method and following a "plan".

To sum it up you divide potty training into blocks- block one they are entirely naked in the house and you look for cues they need the potty, block two they wear clothes but without underwear and block three with underwear (apparently underwear reminds LOs of a nappy too much). The most important thing I took from the book was dont go backwards, make it clear to your LO that nappys/ pull ups are only for naps/ sleep time- dont stick them back in a nappy in the day as it sends mixed signals.

Only one accident at nursery today!

Grandpoplar · 03/01/2020 17:06

Hi all - some more progress today with one self-initiated potty trip (with my help). We went to the park and he had a little accident on the way back but not a big deal. I feel like he’s starting to understand what he’s supposed to do now (although doing it is another matter).

@YukoandHiro we were the same on day 1, I felt very disheartened - he must’ve done 8 wees on the floor - we only caught one on the potty. We too found weaning quite a challenge. (He’s also a sleep dodger and still a fussy eater!)

Grandpoplar · 03/01/2020 17:06

@newhousestress that’s great!

LolaLollypop · 03/01/2020 17:08

@OnlyFoolsnMothers thanks! Think I do need to stick to a proper plan rather than just hoping it happens! I might wait til instant mat leave in a few weeks so I can devote the entire day to it. Bit tricky atm as I'm still working plus have midwife/scans coming up so it's often easier just to whack nappy pants on her!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/01/2020 17:17

Well done OP that’s great progress

blckcurt · 03/01/2020 17:27

Great news @newhousestress

Hi all,

We are Day 3 following the oh crap potty training book. I was about to give up yesterday but then I finally got my first pee at 4pm 😱 (after a lot of telling her it's time to use the potty) can you believe that she held it in all day and was pretty upset by the time it came out, we've been using the toilet as she finds it more fascinating.

First day was 5 accidents on the floor and was very resistant when I took her to the potty.

Today she started a poo took her to the potty and she managed to finish the rest in the potty no problem, so pees are my biggest issue so far. Today she was holding it in again and I ended up sitting in the bathroom for 40 mins knowing she needed to go and finally she went on the toilet but again upset. I then got her to pee on the potty about a few hours later big success less stress and she seemed so pleased pouring her pee down the toilet. I was so happy as was she I'm in again tomorrow for a fourth day but if we keep progressing I'm going to stick with it. Nappy on at bedtime only. Hoping we can be out for short trips on Monday xx 😚

SheepSocks · 03/01/2020 20:58

A really mixed day for us today. DD managed a fair few wees on the potty, even at a friends house. She also wet herself three times, including just after sitting on the potty.

I've just bought oh crap after seeing it recommended on here.

SnugglySnerd · 03/01/2020 21:27

We also tried hourly reminders today and dd was fine. No accidents. Dry pull up after her nap too. Hooray! No poos today though.

literallychristraeger · 03/01/2020 23:00

Hi, can I join? We are on day 5, been working up to the toilet and potty for a good while so he's very used to using it at home and in nursery but decided to really go for it while we were all home over the holidays. Had hoped to start before Xmas but everyone got sick so haven't had as long as I would have liked and he's back at nursery on Tuesday. First day we had a lot of accidents, got better since, we've only had one or two accidents in the days since and today we've had a dry day but we had a lazy morning and didn't get dressed till 11am lol so he had nappy pants on before then, so I don't think I can count it. Is everyone else in pants from early morning till bedtime? My worry is that all our accidents have been when I've not promoted him. Not sure if he's actually learning or whether I'm just catching them in time?? Also worried that nursery won't be able to continue with prompting?

SheepSocks · 04/01/2020 15:56

Another wee on the sofa today Hmm sofa covers are in the wash. Just taking DD to chose some more pants to see if that will encourage her.

Grandpoplar · 04/01/2020 17:14

@sheepsocks we’ve found Huggies Dry Nites sheets a godsend - they’re meant for bed of course but we’ve been putting one under the potty and on the sofa and they do a brilliant job of absorbing accidents (I’m not on commission!)

Hope everyone’s had a good day. We’ve had a ‘cheat’ day today as we went to visit family and wanted to avoid accidents on their carpet. So he had a pull up over his pants and took his potty with us. We’re still way off being accident free, but things feel less fraught than 5 days ago when my son had zero idea of what was happening when he was having a wee.
