We're going to start potty training DS (2.8) on Saturday. Is anyone else starting then too?

I'm starting today with DS 3.4yo. He's our fourth. So we should know what we're doing. So far ...

5 wees. One on the chair, three in the garden and one on the kitchen floor.

This is not going very well Hmm

I am dreading poo-gate.

ItsAllTLAsToMe · 02/06/2013 12:55

Eek, a holiday Whispers! I'd definitely get some training pants for peace of mind.

We were in the middle of Halfords today when DS said 'I need a wee!' Shock, luckily he didn't though! We're getting on okay at the moment, but we're asking him quite often. We found out yesterday that our local library has a loo, hurray (maybe they all do?).

Good luck Tea Smile!

Well dd managed to have 2 accidents while out with DH yesterday (including a poo) and she seems to have gone backwards again today. A poo accident at the park!! (Grim clean up!) and then a wee accident after lunch. Hmm

I do wonder if DH is too relaxed about PT and then she has an accident and he freaks a bit (I know he does!) and that sets her back again. Hmm

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/06/2013 15:36

Oh no, Mother! We have had a wee and a poo accident today, despite being dry for a few days, argh! I really do think she's getting there though Smile

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/06/2013 15:36

Ah,sorry, Welcome to Tea! GrinBrew

TeaMakesItAllPossible · 02/06/2013 18:02

Thanks for the kind welcomes.

I am impressed you are all out. I don't think I will ever be going out again!

I've just heard DH say to DS "you can have a chocolate button for weeing on the toilet but if you pull your pants down next time you can have 2"

Eighth set of pants of the day.

This afternoon DS has progressed to knowing he's going but running to piss in anything but the toilet. He even got out of his paddling pool to stand on the edge and took aim at DS3.

It does reinforce my thoughts that he has all the understanding to go through PT but he's just being stubborn.

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/06/2013 19:29

It definitely sounds like he's knows what is going on, just doesn't want to go where you want him to! Hopefully that means that once he is actually interested in it going in the right place that there will be no looking back and few accidents! Grin

DS (older, potty trained dc) said tonight 'I did a wee in the sink!' Sadly, dh and I dissolved into laughter, so DS now thinks it's very funny, even though we stopped ourselves and told him that wasn't the right thing to do HmmGrin

Dd had no more accidents for the rest of the day, so maybe that is the worst over

WhispersOfWickedness · 03/06/2013 20:17

No accidents today Grin I'm not doing any prompting at all now Smile

Hope it's going well for everyone else Smile

ItsAllTLAsToMe · 04/06/2013 21:04

Well done Whispers Smile!

We're prompting, but it's generally going well. I thought we'd be done by now TBH though! Oh well.

How is everyone else doing?

You're all inspirational.

DS4 is on day 3. He was dry last night and all morning. He has an accident in the park - I think i've broken a bone in my foot and can only hobble slowly - but he still got half of it in the toilet. His bum is so pleasingly chubby he can't get his clothes down so needs an adult when he gets there. Unfortunately, after a great start to pooing on day 1. It's all gone a bit crap the last couple of days. He hasn't made the toilet . Tomorrow all my focus and rewards are going on getting a poo in the toiletSmile

So in summary. Great week weather wise to start. He's doing ok but prefers a standing up wee. I'm getting in the way of him of him doing better and the washing machine is just keeping up Wink

Any ideas for easy off boys clothes gratefully received. He's already in aged six clothes so I can't go bigger for his bum otherwise the length drowns him.

Will be going to hospital in the morning so looking forward to managing toilet training in a whole new environment!

motherofvikings · 05/06/2013 08:23

Hope your foot heals quickly Tea! :)

We are having similar issues with poo. Unless you catch dd grimacing she isn't great with poo. Probably because its a once a day occurrence it's harder to 'learn' iyswim?

I am still asking lots but she did 2 unprompted wees yesterday so we are on track. :)

Blush
motherofvikings · 05/06/2013 08:25

Re the easy off clothes...

Ds got on best with joggers or shorts (made of similar material). I also made sure any adjustable waists were on the loose side. :)

WhispersOfWickedness · 05/06/2013 19:13

I also don't believe anyone who does it in days... Well, unless their dc is 6 or something!

Dd not done so well the last couple of days, 2 wee accidents and a poo accident yesterday and 1 wee accident today Sad
I'm off on holiday on Friday morning so need a miracle before then!

TeaMakesItAllPossible · 05/06/2013 21:05

2 wee accidents and a poo here too.

Grin My DS is 3.4 and it is definitely easier to do it older. Though it seems to require more rationalising of how poo and wee is made. I do not want to have another conversation at meal time about which bits of his food will break down in his stomach and how his testine will make poo from his fish/potato/carrot

Another dry night though. I am surprised at this because physically he is very like DS3 (9) who still isn't dry at night. Perhaps he'll be like DS2 who trained in 3 days and went dry through the night at the same time. I can but hope.

The weeing problem is definitely because he can't get his trousers off alone. His butt has a shelf which he can't get his pants around. Poor chap got increasingly frantic as I hobbled towards him. He wept as I arrived as the puddle around him got bigger and bigger Hmm I'm thinking a kilt.

Tomorrow he will be offered a car for a poo on the toilet and he will feel brill when he achieves it Wink

WhispersOfWickedness · 05/06/2013 21:55

He definitely sounds like he's going in the right direction, tea, my DS spent months looking distinctly disinterested when I pointed out his trousers were wet Hmm
The clothes thing does sound like an issue, can you get some really loose shorts now it's (slightly!) warmer weather? I can see this is an advantage to having a girl, half the time I only have to change her pants as a dress doesn't get in the way Grin Although more wee goes on the floor as no clothes to soak it upon the way down Confused She did also manage the amazing feat of having an accident where her pants were wet, but the wee just poured out of the leg hole of her shorts and they were completely dry! Still no idea how she managed it! Grin
At least our holiday will be in a place with wipe clean floors (must remember to pack floor wipes) Grin

MrsPennyapple · 05/06/2013 21:55

Hello people, mind if I join in? DD is 22mo, which I know sounds young, but she knows when she wants a wee, and can hold it a short time. (I know this because she is often keen to get in the bath asap, and then once she's in she does a wee - helpful!) She also tells me when she is doing a poo in her nappy, and has done for a few weeks. Over the last week she has wee'd in potty and toilet a couple of times, and once she even asked for the potty and then wee'd in it.

We were out today but when we got home I let her run around naked, and she did wee in the potty a couple of times, but she had loads of accidents as well. She was happy enough to sit on the potty sometimes, but then other times she'd sit on the potty for a few minutes but then get off and wee on the floor a few seconds later. So I left it ten minutes and then got her back on the potty, same thing again. Four times we went through that routine, each time she pointed and said "wee wee!"

Is it normal for a first day to be such a hopeless disaster? Have I misjudged this entirely? Am I being ridiculous even trying? If we do try again tomorrow, is it better for her to be running around naked, or should I dress her? If dressed, should it be knickers and leggings, or would just knickers be best?

I am due to have DC2 in 8 weeks, and I had hoped that she would have grasped the basics by then, although I know it wouldn't be done and dusted by then, and they can often regress when a sibling arrives. I just had a really hard time bf-ing DD and I can't imagine how I will manage to PT a toddler whilst bf-ing a newborn.

Sorry for the really long first post.

WhispersOfWickedness · 06/06/2013 06:56

Welcome MrsPennyapple Smile

My dd is roughly the same age and yours sounds a lot like mine when we started, so I would say go for it Grin I always think there's no harm in trying as you can always go back to nappies if it really isn't working.
I'd say that the one major disadvantage to training at this age is that it will be a long time before they are totally independent even when they have the bladder and bowel control. My DS (3yo) will take himself off and be able to do all the associated stuff like undressing, redressing, flushing the toilet, washing hands etc, which dd is simply not big enough and physically able enough to do, so it will be many many months before she is totally independent. I can imagine that that would be really tough when you're trying to care for a newborn as well.

motherofvikings · 06/06/2013 08:19

Hi penny! :)
My dd is 25mo so not too different either. :) I reckon as long as you get some success, which improves/ becomes more consistent over time then you're on the right track. :)

We are now 48h+ without poo!!! Confused Shock

We are meant to be going to the children's centre this am so am expecting her to do an enormo-poo within 5 minutes of arriving! I'm sort of assuming it'll be an accident as we are in a different place. Hmm

WhispersOfWickedness · 06/06/2013 08:22

Oh, I hate when you know an accident will be coming! Dd has been doing a poo every other day, and about half are accidents and half are unprompted in the toilet Confused She didn't go yesterday so today is poo day! Unfortunately this means the next poo day is due when we're on an aeroplane for two hours and in the car for another two Hmm

MrsPennyapple · 06/06/2013 09:05

Hello, and thank you for the welcome.

Whispers I spotted that your DD was around the same age as mine. Missed Mother's DD's age though when I was reading through, good to know there are others here starting at similar ages.

I'm so relieved that you don't think I'm utterly deranged for even trying! I think I am going to put DD in knickers and leggings this morning, so that she can feel the effect when she wees, but will put her on the potty every half hour or so. She's out with MIL this afternoon, so I'll put a nappy on her then.

I'm going to go to the shop while she's out, to buy a different potty, as this one is a bit of a rubbish shape - she managed to wee straight over the side yesterday, poor Dolly got it in the face.

motherofvikings · 06/06/2013 12:07

The long awaited poop arrived at the children's centre... in the toilet!

Was super relieved as it would have been awfully big to scoop out if potty or pants! :)

Good luck penny! I did pants on day 1-3 as I didn't fancy washing multiple leggings etc.

MrsPennyapple · 06/06/2013 14:24

Thanks mother. Two big wees in the potty and seven wet pairs of knickers today. Sometimes she just did a tiny wee in her pants, and then another tiny one ten minutes later. Other times she went an hour without doing anything. She also did a poo 50% in knickers, 50% in potty, but she got upset about doing it in the potty. I did my best to reassure her, told her what a good girl she was etc etc. She's off with MIL for a few hours now so at least I get to think about things other than wee and poo for a wile :)

motherofvikings · 06/06/2013 15:58

Nah! This PT lark gets into your head and it becomes ALL you think about.
Or is that just me? Blush

Penny- Sounds like she might be wee-ing, then stopping herself but not be quite sure yet about wee-ing in the potty so she keeps doing mini wees? Sounds like day 1 is t going too badly

MrsPennyapple · 06/06/2013 16:05

I thought that too mother, she starts to wee but then realises, and holds it until she forgets again. Hopefully it's a sign that she physically has the ability and the muscle control, we just need to get her to make the mental connection.

WhispersOfWickedness · 07/06/2013 14:03

Hi all, just checking in before we go on holiday tonight and I am Internet free for a week, eek! Shock Wink

I agree about your dd, Penny, I am sure that is a feature of training a younger child, I certainly think my DD's physical control is ahead of her mental readiness.

Not had a great few days, hopefully it improves for the next week Confused

Good luck everyone, I'll be back in a week Grin
