We're going to start potty training DS (2.8) on Saturday. Is anyone else starting then too?

Argh, I replied to this earlier and now it has disappeared Angry it was a really long message as well Sad

Ah well, the gist was that we had a good day!

I just came on to recommend Napisan Smile - I've been soaking wet pants, socks etc in a bucket of water + Napisan outside the back door until I wash them in the washing machine.

Jergens, I don't have any advice really, but I have read about people trying to PT, having an awful time, then trying again a few months later and finding it much easier. I wanted to give up on day 2 though (but day 1 was promising).

We're going to see how it goes today. DH will be home (thank goodness!), so it'll be a lot easier. PT is so draining for all involved. If today is a disaster, we'll just stop and try again in a fee months.
DD is clearly thinking about it a lot. Last thing she said to DH last night when he put her to bed was 'Tomorrow, we put stickers on my potty?' Smile
Will let you know how it goes. Hope things continue in the right direction for you all.

HI - my 2.2yo DS has been running around nappy free for a week or so and uses his potty for wees (and for a little poo last night). I wondered if anyone has been having problems when the pants/trousers go on? DS consistantly wets his pants - it's like he needs to see his willy to check if he wants a wee!!?? If he wets or poos in his pants, he'll cry Sad. So I've been just sticking with fresh-air bum for now.

LeBFG - Ds was like that when he PT. I think I just persevered with it but tried to make sure he was in loose things iyswim.

I am on poo watch. Dd hasn't been all day and I'm feeling nervous....
Otherwise she has been dry though! :)

She did it! Grin

Dd was trumping away so I got her to sit on the potty. She wouldn't sit still for long though so I suggested singing. She wanted ds to sing though. So I had to perauade him this was a very important big brother job! Confused

Bless him he sat and sang to her for a fair while while I cooked tea and low and behold a poo!!! Shock Grin

One pair of pants all day long! Am very pleased!

Well done to your DD mother!

We had some improvement today (on day 2). Not hard as we had 11 accidents on day 1!
Today there were 4 accidents but nothing in potty. At least she's holding on to pees longer though. One poo caught by DH in the potty. Would have hit the floor if he hadn't been so quick. She did sit more happily on potty and toilet today. She says that it's hard to pee when sitting as she normally does it standing. Any suggestions on how to overcome this?

Hello today is Dday. Not a great start so far. 2 wees on the sofa. I really need to go and get some milk so think I may have to put a nappy on for a dash to the supermarket

Was interested to read that the potty training girls book suggested a gradual approach rather than the cold turkey route I thought might be best.

DP is away on a stag do - I've definitely drawn the short straw here.

Hope everyone else is ok. Jergens I think I might be on the way to beat your 11 accident record!

What do you think best to do - I've been putting nappies on for naps, any visits out and bedtime of course. Do you think this might lead to some confusion? We're still bum-free. I think all toddlers should come with a poo siren POO IMMINENT POO IMMINENT. Something like that.

We're using cloth nappies and get wee smells out with a white vinegar wash in the pre-rinse. Cheap and easy peasy.

Jergens, it's a good sign she's holding on longer. The message is getting through! DS hated sitting on the potty until he decided recently it wasn't so bad. I think he copies his friends at the CM's.

I just sat down to read this thread and DD had an accident Hmm I am trying to take a step back with not asking so much, and it is resulting in a few accidents, but I suppose that's to be expected! Poos seem to be sorted now, thankfully, don't think she's had a poo accident or done one in her nappy since her tummy bug last weekend.

I think it depends on the child as to whether they will be confused by nappies. It definitely confuses DD a lot, to the point where I can't put one on for her nap now, or we have a bad afternoon Confused It didn't make a lot of difference with DS though!

Going to a wedding next weekend and then on holiday the week after, let's hope the wee situation gets better by then!

Today has been a disaster Sad complete regression, she is now refusing even when she needs it Sad I feel like we've come too far now though and she does have the control, it's just her brain needs to catch up Sad

Disaster here too. Multiple wees on the floor. Refusing to sit on potty and crying. In the end I put her nappy back on. Only encouraging sign was just before bedtime when I walked into the lounge and found her nappy less on her potty - no wee though!

I will try again tomorrow but think I might try to be a little more relaxed.

Disaster here too! I thought we were getting somewhere! So, is there a 2 week regression Confused?

I find it really difficult to not sound disappointed when DS has an accident.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that everyone had a bad day yesterday! :(

Fwiw there may be a element of dc's/us thinking "I can do it" and then being a bit too relaxed and having accidents?

Dd was in a pull up yesterday as we went to visit my sister so a lobg car journey and lunch out after swimming in the morning was too risky. She did really well though and I don't think she actually wee-ed in it!

She did however manage to smash a lamp at my dsis' and the refused to poop until she got caught short. Some went in her pants (which I chucked) but the rest went in the potty. She was very proud of herself and kept wanting to take my (childless) dsis to the loo! :) Dsis was a bit Confused

Honestly, people, if they are having loads of accidents it's too soon., and they aren't ready.

Potty training isn't worth a moment's stress or one load of exra washing. Wait til they are ready and it takes no time at all. I promise!

We started very relaxed about about a week ago. My ds can do it when he's running round butt naked at home but refuses and I mean goes crazy when we try to dress him without a nappy- tried commando but that's a no go either.

Yesterday I gave in and put a nappy on for going out just so he'd actually wear clothes but today I'm going to battle it out. The joys!!

Report
seeker · 26/05/2013 08:45

Don't battle it out. Wait. Honestly. It's not worth a moment's battle either!

Much better day today so far Smile two wees and a poo, all unprompted Smile

I do agree that if they are completely not understanding, they are not ready and there's no point in consistently doing lots of washing and cleaning up. But I do think that lots of children will be able to do it with a little nudge in the right direction, I'm not sure it's quite as simple as ready/not ready with nothing in between.

Definitely agree with that whispers

If they're getting it and having success then one bad day shouldn't mean quitting. Just thinking about what might have lead to the accidents - drinking more, eating more fibre, being distracted, being tired, being a PITA toddler, being away from home, being ill etc etc!

Equally there's only so long you should persevere with wet pants and no success! :)
