Hi, DS is 3 and we've started potty training him today. We were hoping to wait until he woke up one morning and said 'I'm done with nappies thanks very much Mummy - let's go wild with the pants', but this hasn't happened so we thought we'd just try him with nothing on at first and then pants and see how it goes.

Just wondered if anyone else was starting too and wanted to go through it together?

We've done various bits of nappy free time for months with varying amounts of success, but only ever an hour or two here and there with no consistency to see how he was doing and whether we thought he knew when he was weeing or pooing. It's only recently that I've thought that he actually does know hence deciding to give it a go today.

We had a quiet weekend so thought 'no time like the present!'

Now a couple of times in the week we'd had no nappy on and a fair bit of success in the potty. Wednesday = lots of mopping up wees but a few 'hits' at the end of the afternoon. Thursday was better with no accidents. but this was still doing everything bare bum!

Today we were doing pretty well this morning. Everything going in the potty and no accidents, so after lunch we thought we'd try adding pants into the equation. previously pants = accidents (I wonder if he would forget it wasn't a nappy?) so we never persevered with them, but we have this afternoon. Certainly more accidents this afternoon, which is I think a mixture of being tired and the 'pant effect' and we had a very rough few hours between say 3 and 5. Then we've had a few more wees on the potty and going a bit better this evening.

We're planning more of the same tomorrow but we have a birthday party to go to in the afternoon and I'm in a bit of a predicament about that in as much as I don't want to go back to nappies and confuse / demoralise him, but equally don't want loads of accidents at my friend's DDs party so as yet we're undecided. I think at the moment we'll be erring on the side of a nappy as it's just not fair if he has an accident in the middle of the party?

Anyway, anyone who wants to join me for the ride, please come aboard :-)

I'll have Wine, Brew and Biscuit to help the journey go along!

Hi everyone, so far so dry here! We've had a few wees on the toilet today. We did the school run (1 hour round trip in the car) and took my mum to a friends house (another longish drive) popped into Sainsbury's on the way home and dry all the way.

I keep asking her and unless she takes herself for a wee which she does sometimes I will take her myself to try. Sometimes it's working (and she wees) sometimes she sits there and says it's not working!!!

Good love everyone Smile

Kingsroadie · 20/10/2011 13:02

Shaz - when in pants I ask her every so often (but not all the time as it's boring Grin ) and if she says no I am starting to believe her as she seems to have grasped the concept. If she starts shuffling or fiddling with her trousers then I ask and say let's go to the potty. I'd rather take her a few extra times than have an accident if it can be avoided - especially if she is engrossed in playing.

Kellamity - that's great - sounds really positive - well done!

We have had a fab morning - am really encouraged. She has done 4 wees, all on the potty, and all asked for by her / asked for by me and she has replied "yes" (she has worn pants/trousers all morning). And our biggest coup was she did three wees between 8 and 9:10 (small ones), then we went to the park at about 10:30 and she hadn't weed, said she didn't need to etc. So went to the park and she was sitting on my lap having a snack and started fiddling and (I think said "wee".) I asked and she said yes so we went to her travel potty which she wasn't overly keen on - especially outside with people around. Anyway she sat down and weed. I was bursting with pride! This was about 11:30 so she had held it from then. Have just put her down for a nap and she hadn't weed since - despite having had quite a few sips of my tea and water with lunch. She is clearly holding it much longer now which is a relief.

Anyway am really encouraged and def going to keep on with it! Smile

Biscuits - hope no poo fiascos so far?!

Shaz2011 · 20/10/2011 13:13

Thanks everyone, when ds was bare bum I didn't have to ask he just went but now I don't know the signs unless he tells me I do ask but he says no all the time.
What does everyone think of sticker charts for the potty

Kellamity · 20/10/2011 13:15

What are you doing for nap time? Putting a nappy on?

Shaz2011 · 20/10/2011 13:16

No leaving him in pants if he has a nap he very rarely goes for a nap now

Kingsroadie · 20/10/2011 13:43

Yes same here - she goes by herself if bare bottom. He might well know he doesn't need one - give it a go anyway and see how it goes.

I have been giving stickers (although now more established she isn't really asking so much), and when out milky way stars for sitting on her potty as really want her to sit on it outside.

Am putting nappies on for naptime as she often sleeps 2-3 hours still.

Shaz2011 · 20/10/2011 13:51

I think I may do a sticker chart for if he goes on the potty while wearing pants to give him a bit of encouragement thaw what I did to get him using the potty so hopefully it will work this way as well Smile

monkeybananas · 20/10/2011 15:48

Hi all! ooh, it's been a busy wee day so far...
progress; DS seems to have magnificent bladder control, small dribble in pants, stops then off to the potty. but then sometimes just dribbles in pants and doesn't want to expell the rest Blush oh well, each to their own.
I'm trying not to nag his as much today and just asking occasionally "do you need a pee or a poo" generally answer is no though! then I sit him on the potty before his nap, after his nap and while I'm running his bath (don't want him to get into the habit of holding it in until he's got a nappy on.)
As for star chart... we've been using one since day 1- DS seems to like it (even gave my dad a star for going for a pee Grin)
How's everyone else getting on?

Shaz2011 · 20/10/2011 18:37

Today's been very busy 10 wees 2 in big toilet 4 accidents the rest were either dribbles that got finished of in potty or was straight in the potty what a day it's been I thought I was going to run out of pants but we never Smile i have decided to do a sticker chart as soon as i can to see if that helps, he has done well today specially on school run which was 30 minutes start to finish & he didn't wee during his nap Grin

Biscuitsandtea · 20/10/2011 20:20

Just a quick check in tonight.

Been out almost all day. No accidents - but no poo's either, so maintaining 100% wee record and we'll see what happens with poo's tomorrow. I'm wondering whether there was no poo because we were away from the potty, or just one of those things? Anyway, we'll see.....

Hope everyone else ok.

Off to cook some tea - I'm starving!

Arrrrrgggh! Was doing so well today until it all went quiet in the playroo and low and behold - she did a double whammy in her Winnie the Pooh knickers Hmm!!!!! Never mind we carried on and she was great for the rest of the day. And so we will carry on tomorrow! Smile

Shaz2011 · 20/10/2011 22:08

She told me to cut the amount of juice I am giving ds only give him juice at breakfast, lunch, dinner & maybe 1 in-between instead of giving him juice everyone he wants it & after every juice sit him Down on potty, & if he continues to ask distract him with something to take his mind if it also put him on potty before bath & before bed

Biscuitsandtea · 20/10/2011 22:17

Why less juice?

OP posts:
Shaz2011 · 20/10/2011 22:21

Cos it's like when we have too much juice we continue to go to the loo instead of our body doing it naturally, cos he can go & than end up going a few minutes later which would work out ideal for going out on trips & less chance of ds wetting his pants, not saying it's going to work but it worked for her so I am willing to give it ago specially as he is dry while being bare

Kingsroadie · 20/10/2011 22:48

Ooh well Biscuits - that's 100% record - I want a day like that Grin

We had not quite so good afternoon - I brought her down from her nap and assumed she wouldn't need a wee so didn't ask and had to make some calls to dr/dentist etc so wasn't right with her. Anyway, wee in pants. Second one she came to me and said mama and I asked if she needed a wee, she sort of nodded then before I could get her to the potty she started weeing. So she knew about it and wanted to get there. Just didn't give herself enough time!

Went to my mother's and she was perfect in the car and the way back (at least half an hour each way) and did two wees when there in the potty. Yay!

Arggh Kellamity - annoying! How long have you been training for now? Only one accident today though right? (albeit double whammy) we can't expect perfection immediately I suppose, although it would be nice! Smile

BlackCatinaWitchesHatonaBroom · 21/10/2011 09:36

Hi all, am still about, just been a bit busy so hope to catch up later on.[hsmile]

Shaz2011 · 21/10/2011 09:38

So far no accidents 2 weea in potty but that was bare bum but now in pants we will see

monkeybananas · 21/10/2011 10:32

a bleep! it's backwards all the way for us! Angry
DS has decided he quite likes a change of pants and trousers and is weeing in his pants- cue removal of pants and back to basics! Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 21/10/2011 10:36

Am blissfully unaware of ds's progress today as he's at nursery - lovely!!

Although they're going out to the library today so I do wish them luck Grin

We will all get there ladies Smile
