Here we are ladies, a new Postnatal thread! I wonder if we'll fill this one up as fast with one-handed typing?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Thought I'd add myself to the definitive baby list. I'm finding it helpful to keep up with everyone being relatively new to the thread ...

woollyjo · 04/08/2010 08:06

Hi all, can I join you? My third daughter Seren was born on the 29th May. I've been over on the gentle pregnancy thread as we have had a hard time of it the last couple of years and this was a very anixious (but thankfully uncomplicated) pg. Feeling brave today so thought I'd hop onto a 'normal thread'.

I'll catch up with all your stories at the next feed!

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 04/08/2010 08:09

Pigley - we tried the buggy board yesterday and she loved it. I took them both to Breastfeeding Group but had to leave early because DD kept pulling me over to the buggy, putting her little rucksack on and asking to leave. I then had to pop into Boots to pick up a prescription though and she clambered off and was wanting to go everywhere in the shops, ended with her lying on the floor So not great, but hopefully she'll learn. I'm really reluctant to use the double buggy although not sure why really. We were thinking of starting to use a basic reward chart for her but trying to figure out if it'll work.

Rachel - how is your DS1 doing?

cupcakefairy · 04/08/2010 08:18

V quick post from phone, will def try a proper catch up today but wanted to say hi to woolyjo and congratulations! hope this isnt weird but ive seen elsewhere on mn what youve been through & so pleased for you with your dd3. are u in wales then (lovely welsh name seren) im in cardiff

homebirthmummy4 · 04/08/2010 08:39

welcome woollyjo, we are kind and gentle on this thread too, don't worry.

wouldliketoknow · 04/08/2010 08:54

welcome woolyjo, just a quick post, i found this thread in the talk campaigns and i think it is important to get more atention to it, let me know what you think.Offensive men's t-shirt sold by Peacocks. i am terrible at links, if someone could do it please?

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 04/08/2010 10:22

Welcome to the thread Woollyjo Seren is a gorgeous name!

wouldliketoknow · 04/08/2010 11:13

ladies i have to brag
this morning i bfed oscar for 30 min, he then had a botlle of 120 ml rather than 180ml at around 7.30 am
i just fed him for 20 min, finish just before 11, only breast and he is peacefully asleep, no bottle needed, formula or ebm. there, finally starting to crack bf at 13 weeks, better late than never, hah?

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 04/08/2010 12:33

Congratulations Wouldliketoknow You must feel fantastic!

wouldliketoknow · 04/08/2010 12:38

yeah, we still have the ocasional bottle, but...he never took so much from the breast, and even he is crying cos he's hungry, he can latch, while before he could only latch if he was perfectly calm, which obviously doesn't happen often when he is hungry, so yes, all going good...

cupcakefairy · 04/08/2010 14:07

Hi ladies, v quick catch up as have run out of time again!

WLTK fantastic!! Oscar's a very lucky boy to have sucha determined mum

hbmummy at Virginia's wakings! You poor thing you must be on your knees. Hope it improves as her cold clears up.

ML at Olivia not sleeping through. Jude is doing about 8 hours then back down for 3...I would really miss our nighttime cuddle if he dropped that feed though
Was going to suggest the iCandy cherry- we have it and absolutely love it but seems you're already sorted

pamela I was going to post that poem too; it's brilliant

Thanks all for advice on swimming nappies. Seems our local Tesco didn't have the smallest Huggies and when dh looked up the website he went to the american one instead of the UK one and they do different sizing...good to know tiny ones do exist. Hopefully going swimming this weekend

molly whereabouts in France would you go? We're going to South West in October, can't wait. I love France and all things french

hollyoaks I think mine is a case of fissures rather than piles too...definitely improving now thankfully! Last week I was taking painkillers before going

rachel hope you're ok;sounds a very stressful situation

Meetup wise I am in South Wales...is anyone else nearby?? September is v busy for us though so would have to be later... I think it will take a while to organise any kind of big meetup so may need to aim for more like November?

Jabs for us tomorrow.. eek!

pamelat · 04/08/2010 15:29

has anyone thought ahead to weaning, alex is 15lbs 3oz and predominantly breast fed, every 2 to 3 hours though and am rather tired. HV tells me we wont get to 6 months without weaning but 4 instead, thought that goes against advice? anyone any views?

wouldliketoknow · 04/08/2010 15:47

i thought advice is to wean at 6 months bacause is when the gut is ready for anyhing other than milk, nothing to do with size... but i'll ask hv and gp, see what i get...
my niece was so tall and heavy she went off any chart, still they started weanning at 5 months which is the advice in spain, not with solids but fruit puree, just like everybody else.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 04/08/2010 15:55

Pamelat - afaik, current guidelines are weaning at 6 months and size of baby shouldn't make a difference. I weaned DD at just over 4 months on the advice of HV and two GPs because she was dropping down the centiles - they thought solids might help her put some weight on. Her weight seemed to stabilise on the 7th centile anyway (which she's still on) so I'm not convinced weaning made any difference and just found that I ended up feeling really guilty for going against guidelines, especially after reading some of the threads on here about early weaning I'm hoping to start BLW with Corin at around 6 months but will see how it goes - if he seems ready for food earlier I'd look into it. Most HCPs I've talked to about it have said weaning from 4 months isn't a problem, but I don't know enough about the research to comment really.

pamelat · 04/08/2010 16:08

Thank you, I was surprised to be told I would have to wean at 4 months to satisfy him, will wait a month and maybe ask GP instead of HV. Although at 6 week check all he wanted to do was tell me about his own newborn baby very sweet but not all that helpful.

Unless HV thinks I will have trouble breastfeeding such a heavy monster he does like his food, much like me and his dad and his sister!

Carikube · 04/08/2010 17:50

pamelat I was under the impression that you'd be hard pushed to get any solid food in that had more calories than breastmilk; I know there is a growth spurt at around 4 months so I'm just thinking that I will feed, feed and feed some more during that phase (we're going 2-3 hours during the day here, but DD2 does go 12 hours at night, so it's probably easy for me to say).

We did BLW with DD1 and the guidelines there for weaning are that if they can sit up unaided, show interest in food etc then they are ready - DD1 first tried food at about 6 months but wasn't really ready to eat and then she spent about 2 months playing around with whatever we gave her whilst still having as much milk as before (she was ff). She didn't really swallow any quantity until she was about 8-9months so you have to be patient and pretty relaxed about it. My SIL told me yesterday that she hasn't seen any child of that age (16 months) eat so well, in terms of the variety of foods that she will eat so BLW obviously worked for us and we'll be doing it again with DD2.

wouldliketoknow · 04/08/2010 17:56

some babies are just hungrier, mine will dry my breast, have some formula and cry for more... my niece is the same, at 8 months old, she is wearing clothes 12-18 months, who cares?
my advise: do research on the matter and then decide what is right for you, you don't have to do anything, and if he needs more feed he'll let you know, trust me, that would be the first baby to resign himself to be hungry

best advice a peer supporter gave me about feeding, and god knows i had my battles,: you know what is right for you and your family, and the hv doesn't need to spend the night with your screaming baby.

my 6 weeks appointment was a mammoth one, gp didn't want to give him back to me, funny this gps

pigleychez · 04/08/2010 20:23

WollyJo- Welcome aboard We are a friendly and hopefully supportive bunch.

Heffa- Oh yes! We had one of those days today. Grr.

Pamlet- We did BLW at 6mths with DD. Like Carikube, she didnt actually consume anything of any quantity till about 8/9mths. Again she too kept having the same amount of milk till she self weaned herself off that. A BLW phrase is 'Food is fun untill they are one'.
She too is a fantastic eater in both quantity and variety so worked for us too and Lucy will be BLWeaned too.

The WHO (world heath organisation) recommends waiting till 6mths to wean as untill then their kidneys and guts are not mature enough to cope with it and early weaning can risk development of allergies.
There is an actual physical change in their digestive system which makes it capable of digesting solid foods. Before this change has taken place solid foods can not easily or safely be digested and so if solids are given before it happens then the baby is open to problems (many of which appear only much later in life not in baby hood). This physical change occurs at some point after 4 months but before 6 months - and there is no way of telling when it happens in any baby so they say 6mths to cover all babies.

Wouldliketoknow- Wow! My DD is in 12-18mth old clothes and shes 2!

DH has been off today so we took the girls swimming this morning. Again Lucy loved it, shes a right waterbaby.

Went to Lakeside for some shopping but DD1 was a stroppy madam being overtired so we kinda gave up abit and didnt get as much as we wanted. Got caught in a huge storm and massive downpour just as were coming out of a shop. Ran to the car and got soaked trying to get the girls in their seats.

Hoping the weathers better tomorrow as DH has designs of going to the seaside!?

wouldliketoknow · 04/08/2010 21:10

i know, but she is not chubby, just really tall, and obviously a lot more heavy than normal height 8 months old babies.

mollycuddles · 05/08/2010 07:01

pamelat agree with carikube re signs for weaning. I think 4 months is ok if baby is showing signs of being ready but closer to 6 months is better. My dd1 was very keen to start solids at about 25 weeks and she was well above the 91st centile but was fine until then on just breast milk. Molly is even more of a chubby gannet - she's 14lb odd. Haven't had her weighed in 2 weeks. Hv advised me to wean ds at 12 weeks as he was feeding so much. He was ff and was taking 12oz a feed about every 3 hours. Some of us just grow hungry babies.

Well done wltk

Welcome wollyjo and serotoninbutterfly

Hope you're none the worse for your soaking pigleychez

Hope the jabs went well cupcakefairy If France happens it'll probably be Loire. There's a company called bellefrance who take your luggage from A to B while you cycle and they have a trip designed for families.

How's it going Rachel ?

Was planning a hair cut and colour tomorrow and had a go expressing some milk yesterday. Hadn't tried before as Molly literally feeds constantly. She's on the boob about 16 hours a day. She wasn't happy at dh having her for the hour it took me to sterilise everything and then get 2oz. Only mummy will do so will just get a quick cut and do my own colour at home. Cheaper anyway. Dh tried feeding her the 2oz after her bath while I did some tidying and she was having none of it. Major tantrum. Which doesn't bode well for me going back to work and dh looking after her. Dd1 took bottle, boob whatever and whenever but Molly is a different baby. More demanding. More stubborn. The toddler years should be fun .

mollycuddles · 05/08/2010 07:05

Ps we did BLW with ds. Not that it was called that back then and everyone thought we were very odd but ds wouldn't take anything off the spoon so we just let got him to feed himself. He ate loads

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 05/08/2010 07:45

BLW is great, we did that with DD as well. She doesn't really eat very much but isn't fussy which is good. She is very skinny though but with bags of energy and she's very strong so a very good climber. My DNephew was the same and is nearly 7 but still quite skinny and doesn't eat much. I'm pretty big so I rather like that she only eats when she's actually hungry, I wish I could do that

DH home late tonight (staff curry do) so I have to do bedtime by myself which should be fun I'm hoping our local curry house will have started doing home delivery (they said they were going to) so I can order myself a treat!

newmomma · 05/08/2010 10:04

welcome newbies - don't worry - we're all gentle and feeling the stresses and strains of parenthood here too...

my life seems to go from bad to worse.
apart from the demon child who won't stop crying and used to sleep well;

she's now become the demon child who won't go to bed, and wakes up every hour and a half for a feed.

is it a growth spurt or is she just being a bugger?

first1 · 05/08/2010 12:16

Hi all, sorry I've been away from the thread for a while. Hi to all the newbies!

Not much time for personals I'm afraid, will post again properly this evening, but just wondered if any of you are experiencing irregular periods now? Hope you don't mind me asking. Think I mentioned how a few weeks ago I landed up in hospital after a 2 week "period" ending up with a really heavy bleed which was just awful. Then had a gap of 19 days of no bleeding before a ridiculous 1 day period, then another gap of 12 days and then started a period again yesterday. Whats going on!?! I hate having to be on alert all the time of will it/won't it. I do plan on going back on the pill again after my op, but need to be on oestrogen cream so not sure if I can take it whilst using that. Oo actually about that, any health care proffessionals on here who could tell me if its ok to use ovestin cream whilst menstruating!? Thanks!

Oh and got a new job! Must dash, will post tonight.
