Sorry to hear Toby's been so ill

I'm completely sure I'm not pg. Could put a big tick against every one of my usual PMT symptoms. We were out with friends today, two of whom are pg, and someone said "so carrie, when's your next one coming then?" and I just laughed it off with a 'not yet!' and they joked about doing a sweepstake as to how soon after the extension finishes we'll be making an announcement. I cried in the car on the way home about it

Extension is looking fab though

becaroo · 18/06/2010 18:39

carrie Sorry to hear you were upset...am sending lots of preggy vibes your way!!! Seriously though, sell all your baby stuff and it will happen immediately

How is the extension going? What have you had done? The guy is coming to put a new boiler in on monday and will be here most of the week so that will be fun No date yet for the new windows and doors but the new lounge furniture looks good. Havent even had time to take the new laptop out of the box yet!!

To get a solid fuel burner for lounge will be about £1500 which we cant afford so back to the drawing board on that one!

DastardlyandSmugly · 18/06/2010 19:55

Carrie every time I've been pregnant I've had PMT symptoms for a week with no AF.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/06/2010 21:59

Wow Mel, that sounds like quite a fall - ouch.

Poor T Bec, glad to hear he is feeling better though. I used to suffer from tonsilitis until I had them out in my early 20's and I used to feel really ill and flu like when I got it, so I can imagine how awful T must have felt.

Oh Carrie, I wish people would think a little before they say things like that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you {{{hugs}}}

Hi ILTMIMI Yes, it was horrid. He couldnt even drink he was in so much pain what really worried me though (which I didnt mention in my other post) was that earlier in the afternnon he got bitten - we dont know what by - and it was about an hour after that he started with the crying and very high temp. His upper lip was also swollen so I think he had a reaction to the bite too Poor love. I really did think at one stage we would have to cancel ds1s birthday party and the holiday. Cant beleive my baby is 7!!!! sigh.

Have just rebooked for next year at eleveden forest so heres hoping its a bit less fraught!!!!

carrie D&S makes a good point.....I felt like stabbing dh in the eye with a fork everytime I got pregnant which I put down to PMT I also get sore boobs and nauseous at my time of the month too...a lot of early preg symptoms can be thought of as PMT IMO xx

CappuccinoCarrie · 19/06/2010 13:50

Hi all, thank you for the encouragement!
Each time I've been pg its been the lack of PMT that's been the clue.
I've got the one spot that always breaks through my strong acne cream, random stabbing pains in boobs, I'm grumpy, I've got a couple of particular TMI symptoms...I know AF is on her merry way.
But I know there are bigger and more important things in life.
So to decide, do we spend the extra £600 to get solid wood worktops over laminate? Laminate is not only cheaper but more practical, and we don't live in the sort of area where people expect wood if we were selling. But we really like it...
The tiler is here today (Saturday!) finishing off the roof. He's putting the ridges on the two pitched roofs, poor guy has dd sat on her windowsill watching his every move! bec we're having a kitchen diner put across the back of the house.
We have one week left here before moving out for 5 weeks while they do all the internal remodelling to create our utility room. Happy times! Guess I don't really want morning sickness when we're moving 3 times in 5 weeks

Hopefully · 19/06/2010 17:20

Carrie my cousin has solid wood worktops, and they are a nightmare to keep clean/mould free, if that helps you decide. They were treated with all the right things, but after 2 years it is a constant battle. It's not so bad in most of the kitchen, but everything within 3 feet of the sink is perpetually being scrubbed back.

I have no PMT type symptoms, but also no pregnancy symptoms - had v definite symptoms by now with both previous pregnancies. Am seriously about it and definitely going to doc's this month, assuming AF turns up in a couple of days as expected. Poor you with the friends carrie - quite a few of my toddler groups friends (all with children the same age) are announcing pgs at the moment, and I come home and cry occasionally. I'm so brave.

Debs75 · 19/06/2010 22:16

Carie do you really want a wood look? How about a ceramic or slate top they look really nice. Again you will have the decision on real or synthetic and the huge price difference.

Robyn has decided that an afternoon nap is needed again, only at 3.30 or later o she can't sleep till gone 10.
How on earth do you all get your LO's to bed at a reasonable time?

CappuccinoCarrie · 19/06/2010 23:30

Yes we really do want the wood look! Getting ivory units which look best with wood. Have done the sums today though and we don't have enough to get the real wood and a table and chairs, and buy the wood laminate floor, and the tiles and splashback, and turf the garden. So that's it, decision made! I'd even pursuaded dh onto real wood as well!

One of my friends is in labour, ooooh!

hopefully we are at that ridiculous age where new pg are being announced every week. One day it'll be us

Hopefully · 20/06/2010 07:56

Urgh, BFN this morning, AF due tomorrow or day after, and had strong +tves by now with previous PGs, so suspect I'm out of the running.

Can someone please reconcile me to having a bigger age gap? DP and I were so keen to have small age gaps between any and all children we might have (as in, 2-2.5 year age gaps), and now that's not going to happen. It's kind of doubly upsetting as I know DP doesn't want to be in the baby stage for years and years, so the longer it takes to conceive DC2, the less likely he is to go for DC3 (something we said we'd consider if we conceived DC2 quickly and coped OK with 2).

Stupid bloody body.

Debs we've been so lucky with DS - since the drama of going down to one nap (at about 16 months) he's been a dream to get to bed, but I dread to think what would happen if he decided he needed an afternoon nap again! Although saying that, some nights he's chatting to himself in bed for up to 90 mins (so till 8:30) before falling asleep, but I don't really care as I don't have to deal with him because he's happy! [bad mother emoticon]

Pacita · 20/06/2010 10:13

So sorry to hear hopefully. I think it's probably a good idea to see the doctor, like you mentioned. If anything is stopping you getting pregnant, they should treat it. As to age gaps, I wouldn't fret too much. I know parents with all sorts of age gaps, and they are all happy with what they have, because there are advantages to all. Crossing my fingers that the goddess of fertility visits you soon.

I went to the doctor about my lumpy breast, and she prodded and felt for ages. Then after a long gap said "I'm 99,9 % sure that this is normal breast tissue, but I don't want to just ignore it. Come back on the 7th of July if you still have it and I'll refer you to an specialist" (the 7th of July is when she's back from holidays). I have to say that I am not overly worried either, but my aunt (a pathologist) said that she'll do a biopsy when I'm in Spain next weekend. Ah, yes, I'm going to Spain next weekend, which is really exciting. It is my grandmother's 89th birthday. I wasn't planning on going due to uncertainty with house move, but then I thought "hang on, the lady is 89, and I'm not going to be there with her great grand child? Sod that". And bought the tickets. DP is staying, mostly to sleep and watch Wimbledon.

As to the house drama, it sounds like things are moving along and we'll be moving soon! I've just been given my first ever gardening book by a friend for my birthday!

becaroo · 20/06/2010 10:50

carrie We have real oak worktops and I wouldnt have them again. You cant let them get wet (which is really handy in the sink area!) and they need constant oiling. They mark really easily too. Will be having laminate when we re-do our kitchen (in about a million years!!) You are bascially having done what we had done 4 years ago!!! The utility room is a godsend....I wouldnt be without one now. Also, the downstairs loo...great for potty training when the time comes! I also wouldnt have a belfast sink again....the grout around it discolours really quickly and there are no products you can use on it because I have oak worktops!! They also dont keep the heat of the water long so you cant leave really dirty dishes to soak as the water just goes cold.

hopefully I have a 5 year gap between my 2 boys and its great. Not a planned gap, as you know, but its really worked for us. They adore each other. I think that you deal with whatever age gap you get IYSWIM?? My dsis had a 15 month gap and wanted a longer one but needed to concieve another baby quickly because of her gynae issues. It really caused problems with my eldest nephew and it wasnt much fun for her for a while. (or youngest nephew who eldest nephew would physically attack on a regular basis) Remind me; how old are you? I seem to remember you are not even 30 yet? Surely enough time for 2 more dc? Hope it happens for you soon x

Hopefully · 20/06/2010 10:57

Becaroo I'm not entirely what might be described as over the hill - I'm all of 27 (had T when I was 25)! I think the thing is that DP and I totally talked ourselves into the advantages of a small age gap, so I need reminding of the positives of a bigger age gap. And also reminding to relax

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/06/2010 12:19

hopefully, relax!

My sister is 4 years older than me and we have always been as thick as thieves. She's my best friend

You can find pro's and con's for a small age gap and a bigger one. So, I would just say to yourself 'what will be, will be', and 'I'm doing what I can and I can only do my best.' And don't heap all of the blame on yourself and your body. You don't know it's to do with you.

Enjoy Spain Pacita

Carrie have you thought about black worktops? Before you go 'yuck', have a look at some pictures of kitchens with light units and black worktops.

Interesting about the Belfast sink Bec, I have always fancied one. Mind you, nothing gets handwashed in my house, it all goes in the dishwasher

Elvedon Center Parcs is lovely. There is a lovely farm shop not far from it as well, on the Elvedon Estate.

mamamuffin · 20/06/2010 13:14

So sorry if I ve missed anyothe important news. I ve caught up but have a memory like a goldfish x

DastardlyandSmugly · 20/06/2010 15:00

Carrie I have wooden worktops too (inherited with the house) and I'll never have them again. Same problems as others - sink area has mould, they have marks all over them - you can't even spill ribena without it marking. The other thing I hate in my kitchen (while I'm at it) are the granite tiles as they are really cold and have no give, so anything I drop shatters into a million pieces (and I'm really clumsy). Oh for wood floors and granite worksurfaces (actually I would love a corian worktop and sink).

becaroo · 20/06/2010 19:09

D&S God, yes. how I wish I had gone for wooden floors I have got ceramic and I hate them. They mark so easily and I am forever cleaning the damn things. Also, as I am uber clumsy (think a female version of frank spencer!!) I spend alot replacing stuff that has shattered on said floor

hopefully 27????!!! Chillax honey!!

mama Welcome back x

ILTMIMI Good news about Eleveden We loved Longleat but I think its the most expensive of the 4? Its costing less at Elveden for exactly the same week next year

Must go...Toby has done a massive poo and needs hosing down in the bath

ttfn x

DebiTheScot · 20/06/2010 20:16

I've never had wooden worktop but I agree that wood looks really good with light units.

Do your LOs do solid poos? I don't think ds2 has ever done a solid one. They are always quite squigy at best. Is that normal? I'm sure ds1 was more solid.
(and that's one of those conversations I would have said I would never have before I had kids)

FannyPriceless · 20/06/2010 21:07

debi Well, let's have this conversation! DD didn't do a solid poo for ages, until she was at least 12 mths. Always squidgy before that. But she now does some solid / some squidgy.

I used to get quite confused when doctors would ask if she had loose stools because all I could answer was yes, but that's all she ever does! Also nursery have a 48 hour stand down after vomitting or 'diarrhea' and would sometimes comment about her nappy as though I was sending them a sick child, when it was just her way.

CappuccinoCarrie · 20/06/2010 21:32

Hi all, thank you for kitchen comments!

Yes we have considered black, but the only black we like is the proper granite, which is waaaaaaaaay out of the question due to price. The shiney non-granite ones can scratch quite easily, and we haven't seen a black laminate one we like.

We're def having wooden floors too. The quarry tiles we've inherited in this house have claimed too much of our crockery already, I miss having a floor with bounce

Yup, squidgy poos here too! To me diarrhoea is actual water with lumps in!!

Meglet · 20/06/2010 21:37

I used to work somewhere that had wooden surfaces in the kitchen and IMO they were a PITA and they got ruined quite quickly, no one could be bothered to wax / oil them regularly.

debi DD does pretty sturdy poos. She seems to poo every other day and they are quite neat . During the winter months all her poo's were splodgy as she was always coming with or recovering from a tummy bug.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/06/2010 21:53

Back from hols, bookmarking. Hope to pop on here tomorrow - think DP might be ready to try for No 2!!! i have bought folic acid tablets!

Debs75 · 21/06/2010 10:06

Carrie Do post some pics of the finished kitchen. We have a nasty council kitchen which is really boring and not even functional. I need some inspiration for when we move.

Debi Robyn does pretty solid poos, the one she did in her potty yesterday was solid and huge. Nappies do squidge them up a bit tho.
Fanny DS's school used to ring me up at least once a week as he had pooed more then 3 times a day so they thought he was poorly. He could poo 5-6 times a day easy and there was nothing medically wrong, he just had a big appetite.

Age gaps are what you make of them IMO. I've had a 2.10 then a 9.7 and now a 2 and they have all been great and they do mostly get on.
