Think BLW here too. Loving that it will be summer- can put highchair outside hopefully so less of a problem with mess!!

Still recovering from night out, went back to bed today at DDs first nap and slept from 10 till 12.30, lovely, zzzzzzzzzzz

flyingma · 31/05/2010 20:45

I never knew I had to create a profile page in order for the photos to appear but on hindsight, duh.

Lottie TBH I am still trying to get the poking out bottom lip photo myself. I find it sooo cute coz it's normally not over anything that serious. DH thinks I am cruel/ mental!

We have set aside some vinyl from doing up and bathroom and an industrial roll of plastic sheet from when we had the house plastered. I was going to dump it but as there is so much I am hoping to wrap it and bin it after each meal coz yeah, can't be wiping it down after every meal. Esp for you since your mess will be x2!

I've only skimmed the book and desperate for her to release the other 2 later this year (have you pre-ordered?) but wondered if you had figured out how it is that you are to share your food if the baby is not to eat much in the way of salt. I am saying more in terms of food say in restaurants where it comes flavoured...

flyingma · 31/05/2010 20:50

maygirl Nice idea about the outside thing. I wonder how it will work for us as we had probs with mice coming into the house over the winter and the pest control man said that leaving food on the floor outside might attract rats out from the sewer. Or am I being a complete idiot and you mean to clear up outside after the meal just that in doing it outside you avoid sauces being flung on walls and furnishings etc.

The book said that dogs learn very quickly to hover around the BLW-baby... maybe the solution is to borrow/ get a dog!! Save me the cleaning up [lazy mummy icon]

CantThinkofFunnyName · 31/05/2010 20:51

LL - we all have those very annoying things with our other halves I'm sure... or is it just me ? No matter how much we love them, at times grrrrrrrrrrrrr

flyingma · 31/05/2010 21:03

Sorry for flooding the thread today but I was just catching up on some parenting email lists and had to share a couple more things:

Organix club free to join for some freebies like vouchers and the most useful (apparently, according to the editor of the list) of which is the free local directory of things in your area for the Under 5's.

Funny pic blog about stuff kids ruin. Not sure if the filters will bleep out the web address as the domain name has a rude word in it.

maygirl · 31/05/2010 21:13

flyingma, we stopped adding salt to our own cooking at home when DS1 started joining in meals as we all eat together rather than do him separate 'kids' stuff. Out and about i don't really worry as it's not a regular thing. You can ask for a mixed veg side dish for the baby without seasoning in most restaurants. I would often take some fruit or something for him to start with anyway as usually the wait for food to arrive was a bit too long for him at first! Outside I pick up big bits and the birds get the crumbs! I don't remember too much mess last time, most of it would be on DS himself and all over the chair!
Trying to focus a bit on DS's table manners at the moment, so DD has a good example to follow!

crumpette · 31/05/2010 21:18

Hello all! My computer's gone really weird on this page, and I cannot see what I'm typing- it's just blank, but it is typing something does it work?? argh

hello!?

testing....

aha! Flyingma organix is fab- I cannot rave enough about organix food for babies. I haven't used the jars/pots but the packet food (baby rice and porridge) is wonderful as are the snacky things when they're bigger

I am going to do BLW once DS has mastered rice/porridge/puree. BLW is so much easier imo and so much fun for baby, if you start with things that are squishy- banana for example, or a slice of avocado- no risk of choking and baby has great fun. It will involve a bath after lunch every day and it is advisable to put a plastic sheet on the floor first. Newspaper soaks through if wet things splatter on it DD was happily feeding herself though after no time... and she refused to be spoon fed after the first month of weaning, which made BLW a necessity really (she'd happily grab the spoon and try it herself though, but if I held it I'd be shouted at!)

new Gatwick, not Heathrow feel free to come along. It's really looking more and more probable, whaddaya think- Madrid, Valencia Tenerife or Seville? DP wants Tenerife but I think it'd be a bit too small and insular to be there for very long

I've had a crappy crapcrap day of my evil mother and co visiting and I hate them and feel awful now, won't go into it but suffice it to say I'm really upset by what she said

CTFN well done on the holiday but do make sure you leave all cheques/cards and passports in the hotel safe. Do not take anything with you that they can use! Seriously, some tactics are shocking. Children getting very inpatient should help you escape early.

Lottie BLW really is as easy as it seems, but very messy! I did it with DD and it was a breeze. I am far too lazy to muck about with purees and jars are far too expensive. I did wait until DD was 6 months though. I have lovely pictures of her in her highchair with carrot sticks and baby corn all lined up in front of her in perfect lines! She loved eating and it made it so much easier to take out to eat. I still have fond memories of the first poo that had green bits in it - I saved the nappy to show DH (look - she ate it!!!).

One tip I was given was to give banana cut into "fingers" with the skin on. Babies will gum the banana out and the skin gives them something to hold onto.

Hope everyone else is OK. DS is screaming and DD is in his room, so I had better go and make sure that sibling bloodshed hasn't started already!

whensmydayoff · 01/06/2010 10:00

Ok I lasted until Tuesday

glad you are all talking BLW because thats what i need to ask about.

Oh first - london If you wait until 6 months it's meant to be half milk, solids then rest of milk as milk meant to be more important.
If it's before 6 months it's meant to be all milk first to make sure they have it. Mind you, they are just guidelines, they are your babies and you might find something else works for you but I hope that helps.

flyingma I could eat Aiden he is gorgeous. Crying photo makes me hormonal!!

I have no photo's of DD since birth, terrible. Will need to put one on.
crumpette ive not seen J either, get finger out!!

Yes, back to BLW.....

wanted to do purees and DD had different idea, can see she is going to be a nightmare with food already. Didn't want to know.

Was against BLW as just felt, here we go again, another rule change (i know, the attitude ).
Have to say though, looks fun!
I held a banana infront of her just to see what she would do and the comedy commenced. She was like a crazed animal. A lion eating a zebra came to mind. Hilarious.

Got friend's BLW book and according to it, anything goes except sugar and salt .

I can't get my head round it.

Questions are

  1. wheat, eggs, dairy, tomatoes. Can I really give them all to her straight away - now? She is 6 months on 15th.

  2. Gave her so far, Banana, toast, dry pasta, carrots, pears. Her nappies last two days have had only what I can describe as, black threads all through it. Like someone has actually snipped hundreds of tiny threads through it. Looks like she has munched my sewing box - WTF?
Anyone seen or heard of this?

CantThinkofFunnyName · 01/06/2010 10:42

OK - will confess know nothing about BLW at all. The only thing that worries me is how on earth a baby is supposed to eat these hard things like carrots etc and not choke? Olivia is really good with stuff that is completely pureed, but anything that has lumps, she gags a bit - although she is only 5 months . So - tips for me too then please.

whensmydayoff · 01/06/2010 10:58

Morning CTFN,

The carrots are steamed until soft and they grip them in their hands and suck the bits poking out. Same with pear and apple etc, cut into long fingers and steamed soft.

Olivia sucked on the banana until it was half eaten and again, toast is cut into fingers and she sucked on the ends until only the bit in her fist was left. Apparently once they are older they will learn to open their hand and eat the rest and also learn how to pick things up delicately with their pincer grip (index finger and thumb).

Puree worked like a dream for DS and I loved it but she is so not interested. I will try both.

Im paranoid about choking to but she seems to have taken to the finger foods like a dream. Still nervous about it but the book is adament it won't happen .

CantThinkofFunnyName · 01/06/2010 11:01

WMDO - I'm going shopping now! Going to check out Coast so I can actually see the colours etc as online couldn't see too well.

maygirl · 01/06/2010 12:33

WMDO the black threads are banana poos!

Good luck at the shops CTOFN! Let us know what you find please, I'm short with a wedding to go to next month too! It's at Chester Zoo, DS is very excited!!

crumpette · 01/06/2010 13:00

I think it's best to avoid too much dairy/eggs etc at present. No cows milk or honey until 12 months (and strawberries, I think) (this is all from memory so don't take my advice too seriously) You can of course, in a bit, give things that include dairy, like fromage frais (flame me now) etc, and basically I just gave DD all sorts of things to let her experiment with what she liked. Bananas were a firm favourite, she loved holding them and chweing/sucking them to bits. Also liked some soreen fruit loaf (v bad I know), sweet potato, mashed potato, steamed carrots and broccoli, pitta bread, houmous, avocado.. I never gave her milk or cheese but when they're bit bigger you can. They tend to love things like pasta as well- stuff they can play with and occasionally stick in their mouth! Oh and quinoa with veg is good. Pear is good too as it's quite soft so no real risk of choking, they chew it and suck it with their gums.

Black threads are indeed banana poos! NICE!

wmdo if CTFN has your email address/still has my email she can forward pics of J! I have mild paranoia that I'm already waaay too identifiable so I haven't put them on a profile

Thanks maygirl - was totally baffled!

I made a pear and rice puree for lunch and she was only happy if she could dive into the spoon herself and suck it off! If I tried to put it in she was angry...

Speaking of which, I seem to have a bad tempered baby!
Do they all start to show a tempers at 5/6 months? I cant remember DS doing these things so young .

She frequentley does this scream roar and goes tense with temper if things aren't going her way. Im shitting myself for the toddler she is going to become.

Neither of us or DS has much of a temper so we are all when she kicks off, yikes.

whensmydayoff · 01/06/2010 13:11

Am I GOK? That's a laugh, I have the fashion sense of my gran at the mo.

Nothing worse than the old fleeting glance at ones arse or thighs in a window/mirror whilst out and vurnerable >shudder.

I don't have CTFN email. She did give me it to moan a while back but I felt I had self indulged enough for one poor womans ears.

DS at mums for lunch, DD sleeping (for now). Egg sarnies and a cup of coffee are calling me.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 01/06/2010 14:36

OK back from shopping. Horrendous. I HATE shopping!!! So I went to Coast, Karen Millen, Monsoon, John Lewis, Fenwick with all the variety of suppliers, H&M, Top Shop... you name it. Tried on dresses, tops - nothing was right. Ended up in good ole faithful M&S and got some white stretchy bootleg jeans with nice coral chiffony top. Have a coral cami already, plus coral shoes and clutch bag. About the best I can do with these humungous legs and arse.

Not a happy shopping trip and now my feet hurt!

alibobins · 01/06/2010 18:24

Evening all
Jacob has got his nurologist appointment tomorrow but touch wood he has been okay these last few weeks so fingers crossed they won't need to do any tests.

He still sounds dreadful with his chest but he is happy.

Gave him a slice of stewed pear which he happily sucked on I was slightly worried that he would suck it straight down so took it off him resulting in a very grumpy face.

I need som Gok wmdo treatment off to a 40th party in a few weeks and I need to look good 5ft 3 size 16 please help lovely ladies.

flyingma the pics of Aidan are gorgeous brough a tear to my eye.

Damn you London. I came on to moan about my nightmare girl not sleeping and there you are, showing off with your two . Now I won't get any bloody sympathy!

EVERY FECKING HOUR until 4am then she was just up, yes UP, UP for the day, ready for action. Ended up putting her in her Baby Einstein and watching her swirl around the toys happy as larry to get her evil way.

WTF? Since she had this horrid virus/cold thing she has been a nightmare (about 7 days now). Each night has got gradually worse.

Tonight my DH has told me the cot is going into her own room, no more hairdryers or white noise CD's, we are going cold turkey .

It won't work people, he is dilusional.

All in one go, cot banished from room, no white noise and no walking floor - just controlled crying - eek! My nerves can't take it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

london if I had chatted to you when I had DS I would have been uber smug with PLENTY of advice.
He slept through from 13 weeks as I didn't jump as soon as he whimpered like madam.
I also wasn't afraid just to put him down and let him cry a bit.

I was a new mum and only went with what my mum told me and GF!

Then I met squillions of other mums with different approaches and idea's and down right disgust at the mention of controlled crying.

Id stay very quiet and worry id done the wrong thing.

My approach is different with DD as the guilt of the slightest cry eats me up.

Honestly - DS was a much happier more settled baby. He could wake up and settle himself no problem and was quite happy to go to bed.

DD cries as soon as she hits the bed and if she wakes up, thats it, the house is up and we have to jump through hoops to get her to sleep again.

Im not actually giving you any advice here - god no

hail to woman of two babies up in the night

Im just sharing my thoughts on two different experiences and the outcome. What to do about babies not sleeping - no idea!!

Hope that was helpful !
