crumpette and wmdo - it's interesting to hear your thoughts about jabs. I'm rethinking letting Jack have his 16 week jabs considering there are concerns around the effect it would have on him now

ctofn - i'm sure that you are yearning for another DC and Percy is your substitute

ll - I ordered a winkel which arrived today which DS seems to like so thank you for the suggestion. Jack currently has both boobs at every feed and has done since for a long time, he's just a chunky monkey and loves his Mummys milk. I must admit I do think it would make things easier if I was to start weaning him now but I know it's sad but I feel a bit like if he starts having stuff other than milk I can't deny he's growing up and no longer my baby boy, he's becoming a big boy

Just out of interest, once you wean babies how long is it until they drop feeds?

mk - i'm ok thanks, feeling a bit more with it because i'm taking my pills again properly. I think last week it just got to me because DS screamed for about an hour and a half the first time he was left with his Dad and after that he's been so clingy and not happy to go to the people he normally likes. I know it's selfish but I would like to be able to go and have my hair done or for dinner with my friend and not take Jack because I feel like i'm not sure who I am other than Jacks mum if that makes sense? I do hope that your DCs willy wasn't too broken

Right then ladies, i'm going to take DS out in the garden in his new paddling pool which was a nightmare to blow up. He's got his mat and balls and toys in there so i'm hoping it will keep him entertained for a while at least.

flyingma · 01/05/2010 19:22

Interesting re the info on vaccinations. I have experienced the same thing re GPs pushing the BCG. I don't know re side effects but have nearly lost family in the past to TB so something I would take seriously esp since my sources are saying that in certain parts of the UK, these so called Third World diseases are making a reappearance having come in with the newer waves of migrants.

That said, it is highly unlikely that DS is going to come in contact with anything like that so I might refuse the BCG till later on having read what Crumpette et al have had to say. It didn't even cross my mind to do so, like LL I am toeing the party line with the (perhaps naive) idea that if they have dared to roll it out as public health policy, that they would have weighed the odds of side effects against the benefits of vaccinating the populace. Then again, I don't really trust the government to do much right anyway so perhaps this is something I should be paying more attention to.

I am currently expending my energy worrying and wondering about the weaning question instead. It is annoying because from what has been said here and past policy, weaning at 4 months seems to be ok. But having read the WHO guidelines and some info on Kellysmom about what's not mature when, I think I'll go along for as long as I can until 6 months since we have not got the reflux reason to wean earlier. WHO aren't too clear on formula-fed babies, they only seem to make some noncommittal statement that "perhaps bottlefed babies should continue on BM substitutes for the 6 months too". In any case I have stocked up on baby rice - the organic stuff is on offer at Asda [bargain hunter icon]

Am trying to find non-Annabel Karmel books just for a range of opinions on the subject as I don't believe for 1 moment that she is the only person in the world who knows anything about weaning (recommended by HV and some friends). Thanks maygirl for the link. Can anyone recommend any on BLW as I am interested in that too?

Lottie my HV said that baby rice is what you start with mixed with BM. Then you slowly introduce some fruit/ vegs (different stages) like avacadoes, parsnips, carrots but the rice goes on for a while. You should be able to buy the baby rice where they sell formula and baby food. Most of the formula brands make a variant of rice... I think Milupa (Aptimal) do something else for Stage 1 weaning but it isn't rice.

crumpette Was it the Hipp (yellow boxes) banana cereal that you were talking about? I was looking at all the flavours going nom nom LOL DS will be lucky to get any [greedy mummy icon] I hope the BM problem sorts itself out soon, I can sympathise with screams of hunger!

What's your address? We'll show up in force to whallop that not so D, P of yours! In Casa Flyingma we've had a few episodes of shouting over baby duties at weekend but to have never even lifted a finger?! And to then even demand you run around after him

WMDO Really, really fingers crossed for the all clear from docs. (hugs) LOL re the weaning on ham sandwiches.

MK I hope DS' willy is ok too!!

crumpette · 02/05/2010 12:29

Hello- well I'm mildly happy that DP is now ill with the same thing I had- hahahar and he's crying like a baby, seriously he keeps shouting 'heelp me' I am revelling in being evil to him as he was evil to me!! That should teach him to tell me to clear up while v ill

flyingma it was not hipp organic, that has a strange aftertaste (yes I eat baby food) but I think it was 'organix'. I have had a look at current ranges and I cannot find their banana porridge (from 4months, have seen one they do for 12 months but it's different) but if you see it, it tastes divine and was the only one DD didn't spit out

Hope everyone's OK today- really heavy rain here, so much for sunny bank holiday outings

flyingma · 02/05/2010 14:19

LOL @ Crumpette and baby food. Will keep a look out for it. Does all baby rice taste the same or have you noticed a difference between brands? I used to like rusks but apparently are really bad for kids... is there anything that says that I can't buy it and eat them all myself?

sockmonkey · 02/05/2010 16:43

boots did a sunshine breakfast cereal, and a banana one I think. DSs both really liked them. I tended to look for stuff which you just added water to rather than milk.
DS1 was fine with baby rice, but DS2 would not even contemplate it, so ended up (on HV advice) weaning with rusks instead.

I'm still planing on getting to 6 months before weaning, but understad those of you with reflux-y babies are advised to start on solids a bit sooner.

crumpette I thought my DH was bad, he has only changed 4 nappies since DD was born. He will hold her when needed, but doesn't do much otherwise. He is good with the boys though, and will sometimes put them to bed for me if I'm busy.

whensmydayoff · 02/05/2010 18:04

Plum do a superfoods porridge which is the dogs boll*cks in nutrition. It is four grain including quinoa and when I used to feed it to DS I felt uber smug. Job done, feet up, nutritional requirements met in one breakfast - it's downhill from here!
Can't remember what age they can get that one.

Did I already say....DD took formula from a bottle!!!

A friend told me her DS would not touch the ready made stuff but was fine with the powdered because it's thinner like real breastmilk. Someone said it on here too I think but I thought, na, thats too easy, she'll turn her nose up as per usual.

Nope, straight away she took it. whoo hoo

Is anyone else finding their DH/DP a pain in the ass (apart from the usual suspects ). Everything DH has done/said today has pissed me off!

This morning he announced he was taking DS to this swimming pool 45 mins away with slides and waves etc.
We have talked about all going as a family once DD stops feeding long enough to get in the water but somehow he couldn't wait a few weeks on me coming too. Big argument there (I know, petty stuff).

Other little niggles then earlier I wanted to bid for a brand new Baby Einstein Entertainer still in box with delivery (a magic find). I wanted to put in £50 and he said no way £40, argued to and fro and he won, bloody lost it. Fucker.

Now I know the above is petty but I just want to stab him for no reason.

Now he is hovering and moaning. Grrrrr

Hormones?

Mama2b5 · 02/05/2010 18:36

Wot have i missed MTK- DS1 willy not broken????
more talks on weaning and baby food, baby rice! please dont tell me its that time already!
im finding isaiah taking the bottle impossible and he makes such a fuss just awful,I'm feeling a bit better but really have to think it through about the vaccines just like the swine flu jabs that i refused to get! things have really changed since dd9 - wow!
well the weather has gone down hill - pure rain, no wonder all these dc r getting sick!Went out and had fun in the sun in brighton yesterday just have to be grateful for that!

Mama2b5 · 02/05/2010 18:43

sorry WMDO cross posted! but boooo hissssss to your DH why is he being like that,he needs to stop and think of your feelings!
my dh is being great no complains here,he does everything here but bf because he cant! ive tried express, formula's and bottles different types, warm, room temp he aint having it - isaiah not dh!lucky you you tried and it worked.
Thanks Crumpette - food for thought!

mistletoekisses · 02/05/2010 19:39

Ha ha! No DS1 willy fully intact. He is very interested in his willy since his nappy has come off. Mens obsessions with them start early obviously. Have no idea what prompted the my willy is broken...attention seeking methinks.

New - glad to see you are ok.

We have had a fun few days. Farm on Friday. I went along with DS1 and DH to rugbytots yesterday (is normally a strict daddy/ son session), followed by dinner out. Today was pyjama day in the mistletoe household. Bliss. If the weather improves, are off to the morden hall bank holiday celebrations tmrw. Has been a nice chilled weekend.

Hope everyone else ok. I am off to bed now to get my zzzz's. Nico was a gem and only fed once last night. But has grizzled all day today (teething perhaps??) so anticpating a more disturbed night tonight.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 02/05/2010 20:16

Hello one and all. I'm feeling rather wonderful and had the perfect Sunday. Firstly, because it's a bank holiday and I have been absolutely knackered, DH did last night late feed, slept in the nursery, saw to Olivia through the night and had a lie in, with her, this morning. I slept in our room, big double bed to myself, bed at 9.30pm, slept til 8am HOORAH HOORAH HOORAH!!! Then lounged around for a bit in PJs, decided to take dog for a walk in the pouring rain - which I love, provided I'm kitted out for it. Percy was divine, a really enjoyable second walk experience .

Came home, kids all happy, playing various things. DH finishing off the ironing, prepared, cooked and served the Sunday dinner (always a big roast with about 12 veg in Casa Can't Think), DH looked after Olivia all day, I took Percy for another walk later and basically just relaxed. It has been truly wonderful. Plus I have the added benefit of knowing I get another full night's sleep tonight as DH doing the same again .

Going to visit BF tomorrow and new baby so another nice day ahead I think.

WMDO - sorry if my post sounds gloaty after you've been pissed off with your OH. I usually am always pissed off with my DH, but tbh, it's always my hormones and not always him being bad IYKWIM!

Mama2b5 · 03/05/2010 01:18

ohhhh thats the joke! mines is like that as well i notice that he can be screaming as soon as nappy is off he is smiling from ear to ear and from 9 weeks been trying to pull and tug at it, i may have to get restrains for him!

CTOFN-im glad you have been able to relax and chill its wonderful enjoy and make the most of it!

my sister is doing the race for life im so proud has done it 3 yrs now, i told her i wanted to do it but if i cant wean isaiah off my boobs it cant happen! want to do it in memory of my mum! anyone else doing it or any other runs this year? or is it to much to soon!

alibobins · 03/05/2010 09:42

Morning Well Jacob finally slept through the night 8.00 till 7.00 pity I didn't lol lol I've got an infected wisdom tooth

It's a miserable day here all grey and cold so looks like another day stuck in.

Hope everyone is having a relaxing bank holiday x x

CantThinkofFunnyName · 03/05/2010 10:21

Hoorah for Jacob. for Ali.

Newbeginning1 · 03/05/2010 11:10

ali at Jacob and all the other babies sleeping through the night but well done to him.

I hope you get uyour tooth sorted. Dentists scare the hell out of me to the point they sedate me before I go Smooth, i know!!

crumpette at your DP. I hope that you're cooking some really nice smelling meals to make him feel that little bit worse and also to make him realise how hungry he is but im guessing he wont want to eat. Maybe crack on the hoover too just for a bit of added noise to annoy him. I'm sure you would hate for it to wake him

right ctofn i'm afraid i'm turfing you out of the boo hoo club after your tales of your fabulous weekend. I think it must have been about September when I last had 8 hours straight sleep. I'm also very jealous of your time for you stuff, the 4 hours i've had in 18 weeks though has been fab I think it's only fair that you send your DH to me for the next bank holiday and I can sleep

mama2b5 my sister is doing race for life but I must admit the thought of running isn't floating my boat right now, maybe next year though.

wmdo well done to Olivia for having formula from a bottle

Well lovely ladies i've weighed myself and i'm now 13stone 5lbs which means i've lost half a stone

Jack managed to throw up 7oz of milk last night all over me and my bed and floor which was truly lovely. I took him to get him checked out and they have given him an inhaler to help him with his breathing as he's wheezing but put him being sick down to it being viral. I'm sure that Jack is trying to set me up with a dr and thats why he keeps getting ill.

I hope everyones enjoying the bank holiday.

alibobins · 03/05/2010 11:59

Lolling at new being set up by Jack but at Jack being poorly. The paramedic asked if I was medically trained but I just told him its down to spending half my life in hospital or doctors (and my love for casualty and holby city )

ctofn when do we get to see pictures of Percy?

CantThinkofFunnyName · 03/05/2010 18:13

Percy pics uploaded! Not so happy with DH today! Went to visit BF with new baby. Got stuck in traffic on way back. Came home, he had been sitting on arse all day. 6 bottles needed washing up and sterilising, dishwasher emptying, washing up loaded, dinner to be prepared. Have driven 80 miles today, not best pleased.

alibobins · 03/05/2010 19:37

Percy is adorable

Not happy with Dh either he went out for a drink at lunch and is still not back

Mama2b5 · 03/05/2010 20:04

Hi all - well done to jacob on good nite sleep!
sorry ali - about bad tooth - i feel your pain!
CTOFN - ahhhhh boooooohissssss to DH he needs a kick up the butt and get back in to gear 1 and not gear 5!
New- i hear you about the r4life - sideline support/rounding up sponser's is all i can offer this year i think!
im here munching on a stick of rock! yummy!

maygirl · 03/05/2010 21:01

LOL too at baby matchmaking new, but sorry to hear Jack's not been well. Well done for losing the half stone.
Talking of willy injuries my uncle had a wee playing out in the street with his mates as a small boy and zipped his up in his flies, and ran all the way back to my grans screaming

I'm back running and BF mama2b5, I just need to feed first and maybe wear 2 bras!!! Did a 40 min run with a neighbour last night at 20:30, once both kids in bed for the night I'm hoping to do a race for life soon, my mum survived breast cancer 18 mths ago, so my sister and i would like to do one and get her to come and watch.
Having a lovely weekend, its been my birthday . Saturday met with 5 old friends for afternoon tea at a posh hotel. Travelled by train with DD in her ergo sling. She slept on the train journey both ways, and had a short nap in my arms during tea, which was lovely, as being number two having the time to let her nap in my arms is a rare luxury . In fact at times I forgot she was even on my knee I was so engrossed in gossip and cake and scones, ahh bliss!!!!! Returned home on train like a packhorse, laden with bday gifts, nappy bag on back and baby on front, tired but v happy.

I used to work in child nutrition and went to seminars by WHO bods, and one of reasons for waiting till 6 mths is that young babies tend to cut back too quickly on their milk feeds if getting solids earlier. Not good if BF, for breast health- get engorged, or milk supply, so babies can end up weaning from the breast earlier than desirable. Milk is more nutritious than most early infant foods, so its better that it remains the major source of calories for the first year. I'd imagine its easier to encourage little ones to finish their formula feeds and make sure having at least the minimum required ounces per day, but not so if BF. I'm planning on waiting until 26 weeks with DD, but of course never know how its going to turn out with each individual baby, she may have other ideas! I'm not being judgemental here but just thought I'd mention there are reasons other than the allergy one. Flyingma I too like to avoid Annabel K! There is a Baby led weaning book out by Gill Rapley about the baby led approach and babyled weaning website by a mumsnetter with some recipe ideas for pickupable food!

Newbeginning1 · 03/05/2010 21:08

ctofn i am in love with Percy, he is soooooooooooo cute and I just want to have cuddles with him I'm very at how glamorous you look in your picture with your DH and DCs, you look fab.

ali - i think thats the 1st time i've seen you post on here. I wouldn't want to be in casa alibobins when he returns home

Newbeginning1 · 03/05/2010 21:11

x posts maygirl Happy birthday. Sounds like you had a great time with your friends.

whensmydayoff · 03/05/2010 23:06

maygirl grrrr I hate you . I was all set and excited about weaning DD at 5 months (2 weeks from now) as I did with DS. You make very good points and now my built in guilt has kicked in and I have to think twice. Damn you and your knowledge of stuff.

How is it bad breast health to get engorged though? I spent the first 3 months engorged and if she didn't wake for her night feeds id wake up with a basketball for a boob that was actullly painful to lift from the bed!!

CTFN how cute is Percy? Adorable. Possibly even worth the extra hastle....if they came fitted with a colostomy!

Hiding in office while DH struggles to give DD a bottle. Was too good to be true the other day.
It seems it needs to be an exact tempreture and now she won't take any more than 100 mls.
That annoying DH of mine keeps coming through asking me what to do next. How irratating.
Did I spend the last 4.5 months elbowing him in bed saying stuff like
"she won't take any more, do you think she has had enough"

"she seems too windy, what do you think".

Noooo, that would be stupid wouldn't it.

Her reflux is horrific. It's like she isn't getting any meds (is on 15mg Omerprazole) and is right back at 5 weeks old.
It must be something else like a dairy intollerence as I thought so will have to ditch the dairy tomorrow. If things improve again then it's a definite.

DS hasn't been great since the immunisations 11 days ago. Really tired and pale and tonight has a bit of a temp.
DD's reflux has been tenfold worse too but don't know if thats coinscidence.
Just know Im not confident enough to carry them through. DS is rarley ill and never ever looks pale and at nearly 3, is never lethargic as he is now.
Extra paraniod me thinks but ive been very anxoius about DS mainly. DD is fine otherwise.

Right, 9 stone 10 lbs (1lb on). Not been bothering about weight lately. Need to get back into it.

Yawn, right sounds like DH has given up so better get off to bed for DD's usual 2 feeds nowadays!

whensmydayoff · 03/05/2010 23:12

Thanks crumpette for all your links. x

whensmydayoff · 03/05/2010 23:17

Fecking hairdryer is on now.

That's another annoying thing. If he does any feeds he lets me run about getting stuff ready, then im on cat chucking out duty and getting DS up for Wee. Just when I think i can get to bed, he nips in and switches the hairdryer on to settle her instead of walking up and down like I do.

Ok, so I will just sit in office talking shiton mumsnet

flyingma · 04/05/2010 03:06

Maygirl Thks for your reply. I presume that the xyz of baby's not being well-developed enough to process solids until aged 6 months still stands? There is what I thought a big long list of it on Kellysmom which TBH is what scared me into reverting back to waiting till 6months if possible.

The reason I ask is because aside from the morning feed, the rest of the BM he has is EBM and everything else of formula. So I am assuming my supply won't drop since everything I have is expressed and since I would firstly be dropping the formula feeds. I suppose I am just looking for info re when their little bodies are ready to take solids since the advice ranges from 4 months to a year!
