Sweetheart - lovely to hear from you

Hi Mandy and SFX

Megi - so sorry about your h. How old is he?

Trib - I've definitely had a taste of PND recently - it's hell, please share stuff on here with us, it might help. There must be systems and stuff in place to help that your HV will tell you about. My ds has been doing the crying whilst eating thing too; I mentioned to the doc yesterday that ds might have a touch of reflux and so she gave me a prescription for Gaviscon. So I'm using that plus the Infacol, plus making sure he's not just crying because he's tired, and he seems to be getting better. Touch wood.

Lately ds has been a bit unsettled generally and the only way I can calm him is to swish him around over my shoulder, so inspired by Mogwai's "passive Perenting" thread, I've just got him an automated Aquarium Cradle Swing. He's not been in it much yet, but I'm hoping it will help.

Bubb - My vision, which is rubbish anyway goes blurry when I'm tired. So it's been pretty blurry for a few weeks now.

Lynny - I cried a bit too when Arlo did a big cheesy grin at me last week - he doesn't do it much and we really have to work for one, but aren't they the best thing in the world??

Uwila - how on earth have you managed to get ds to sleep nearly 12 hours??

Lua - well done for getting a haircut! I'm dying to get my mop sorted out, not sure if i'm brave enough to take baby though. I hate having my hair "styled" too - why can't they help themselves doing 70's flicky bits at the side??

Lua/Tea - Been out in the buggy loads, but not on "terrain" yet - shouldn't really until he's swapped from the carrycot to the pushchair mode, but really looking forward to it. At the moment I'm just plodding around on pavements and in shops, so of course I'm wishing I'd got the swivel wheel Urban. Knew I would for the first few months though

Is anyone like me and not sleeping in the same room as dp/dh?? We have ds in our bedroom but Dp sleeps so lightly he just can't get any sleep in there, so he sleeps in the spare room. Is this normal?

charleypops · 05/08/2005 18:05

Yesterday dp and I went out for lunch. Took Arlo (of course). Then a cople sat on the table next to us. They also had a 6 week old. The woman then started talking to me. Things like ;

Her; How much does he weigh?

Me; 9lbs 6oz

Her; Oh? she (meaning her dd) was almost that when she was born

Her; Does he cry much?

Me; He's been crying quite a bit lately

Her; Really? She hardly ever cries, she's such a good baby

Her; How much is he (meaning Arlo) eating in a feed?

Me; about 4oz

Her; oh, she's eating five, sometimes more. Then;

Her; How's he sleeping?

Me; I usually feed him twice

Her; oh? she's sleeping right through

Her; He has a dummy then?

Me; Yes, he finds it comforting

Her; Oh? she just spat hers out, doesn't need one

etc

Is this a taste of things to come??

bubbaloo · 05/08/2005 18:58

hi charley-ds also has the aquarium swing.he loves it and spends nearly all day in it,really happy listening to the music and watching the lights, infact we're going on our hols in sept and we're taking it with.

isn't it funny how people chat to you when you've got a baby? we went into town yesterday with my mum and while we were walking about,i could see people doing double-takes at oscar's plastered legs, which i did find quite amusing.
everytime we stopped though, someone was asking what was wrong with him and infact 2 different people also said they were born with the same problem-amazing!

does anyone else's baby have a heat rash at the mo? we're having a bit of a nightmare as ds has a little rash on his back and seems to be hot quite a bit.he's also had a couple of mega screaming fits the last 2 nights which im sure is down to the weather too.he's hardly wearing anything anyway but i suppose his legs are constantly hot-cant be much fun for him.

just had a text telling me my friend had her baby an hour ago.he was 9lb 5oz.

tribpot · 05/08/2005 19:14

Charley, loved your 'competitive mum' conversation, how mad to be saying (by implication) "my child is better than yours cos she eats 1oz more per feed". Wooo-hooo! The extent of my competitive parenting so far is comparing scan stats with my friend who's expecting in December, i.e. whose baby had a bigger crown to rump length at 12 weeks. She is most despondent that her baby's head circumference is smaller (comparatively) to Toby's but I pointed out that on b-day she would soon learn to see this as an advantage

We are the opposite of you - dh sleeps with the baby and I sleep in the spare room. I can't co-sleep with the baby as his every sound wakes me up. Fortunately the walls are so thin that any even vaguely loud noise like snuffling about is enough to wake me up when it's food time.

I might talk to the HV about Gaviscon although their attitude here seems to be (for anything) "just keep an eye on it, it'll be fine". I'm sure if I said Toby's head had fallen off this would be their response. The GP I saw for my checkup is the nightmare GP I won't let dh go and see any more as she thinks he is drug-seeking. She looked at me like I was completely insane when I explained that dh was going to stay at home with ds when I went back to work. Hello 21st Century!

Charley, I think you're right about posting about some of my PNDesque tendencies, it might help to get things straight in my mind before the HV comes round. Will start a separate thread on it.

Bubb - congrats to your friend, 9lb 5 is a jolly good effort! (Ouching on her behalf if it was a normal delivery). Poor Oscar must really be getting some attention with his little plastered legs, bless him.

Hope we all have good weekends!

uwila · 05/08/2005 19:29

Charley, women (and men) who go round boasting that stuff are usually... well... liars. A rare few babies are angels, but then your little Arlo probably has a personality.

As for the sleeping through. I don't really know why. It's God's special little gift to me to have children who sleep like their mother. It's prbably God's way of keeping them alive.

But, I'm not boasting because the little needy boy can't sit by himself for 10 minutes. Oh no. That's boring. Mummy must carry him everywhere. Hope the new nanny doesn't mind!!

JonahB · 05/08/2005 19:33

Lynny, it is so lovely when they smile, isn?t it? It makes it all worthwhile when they spend the rest of the day being little b*ggers

Oh Charley, people like that need such a good slap! Nothing like starting competitive parenting early, is there? I suggest you try and rise above it and make yourself feel better by assuming the child will turn into a foul toddler??

Well, the theatre was an unmitigated disaster . DS kicked off as we arrived and I missed the entire first scene, which was about 20 mins long. I left DH to watch it while I walked round with the buggy. The heavens then opened. At that point, we decided to count our losses. Ah well, live and learn. So much for thinking I can have a baby and a life!!!

So saying, he has just gone down at 7pm, so maybe I?ll get to eat my pizza and drink my beer in peace .

Does anyone know if I should strictly avoid getting water in DS?s ears in the bath? Does it matter? I?ve just been given a fantastic baby floating contraption for the bath, where DS is half submerged. He seemed to like it and it is SO much easier to bath him as I don?t have to support him at all, I just leaving him floating, however, water is going into his ears. Does this matter? (I?m glossing over the fact that I also watched him try and drink the bathwater). If it doesn't matter, I can really recommend this thing to anyone who is struggling with bathtimes on their own.

Have a good evening ladies?..

Cooperoo · 05/08/2005 19:40

Hello Ladies!!!
I am back!! (Although I don't think it will be as often as before as our last phone bill was CY£90 for one month. Eeek! It was June though which was an exciting month for us all...mostly internet calls though....)
How are you all. I have had a really quick catch up.
Megi - How are you doing? What a spectacularly crappy thing to happen to you. Hope you are holding up. Thinking of you.
Trib - Hope you are doing OK too. You have an awful lot to deal with too. Just take all help that is offered, and if it is not offered ASK!.
We have had a wonderful time in the UK, including a great big family holiday to Norfolk for a week with my two sisters, brother plus partners, parents, Granny and an Auntie and Uncle too. Truly memorable and lots of people to help me with the girls.
We have no routine at all now we are back. It is stupidly hot here in Cyprus and both the girls are suffering from heat rash and so we are all having four baths a day to try and keep cool. DD2 is obviously very thirsty and so waking every 1-2 hours through the night for little drinks from me. Yawn. DH is now back at work (yes he really did get 6 weeks off) and so we are trying to get back to normality. I feel very blessed that both dd's have slept at the same time (1200-1400) for the past two days, so I have obviously used the time productively and watched my videos of Desperate Housewives from when we were away . It is too hot to go out so I know dd1 will be going stir crazy soon. I hope we will acclimatise soon.
DD2 has terrible spots on her face. The doc at our 6 week check said they are normal and gave us Aqueous cream. Has anyone got any tips to help. They look so sore. She is six weeks old now and pushing herself all over the place with her legs when we put her on the floor. She has grown far too much. My little newborn has gone already and it makes me a bit sad in case this is the last baby I have......
Take care all. I hope to be popping in daily again now we are back, although I am not counting on it . Bye for now....

Cooperoo · 05/08/2005 19:46

Charley - To ladies like the one you met Just nod and smile, nod and smile......they are not worth any more of your time than that. They are the insecure ones and telling you all that for their benefit no one elses....

jonah-shame about the concert.we havent actually taken ds out apart from shopping,so should be interesting to see how he is when we do.
infact,i booked our christmas day lunch today,at a carvery near home.there's 10 of us this year & i always have everyone over xmas & boxing day,but seating us all leaves us a bit squashed.decided that as theres a carvery in walking distance might be nice to go there for a change.anyway...had to pay £100 deposit and was told that even though ds wont be eating there,i have to pay £23 for using the highchair,or if we take our own(and walk along the streets with it!!)theres no charge-what a cheek!!!
i phoned head office and complained.he can now have a high chair at no cost.

coop-great to hear from you and glad you enjoyed your time back here.
ds was also very spotty a couple of weeks ago.the hv told me to rub olive oil on his face but seeing as i use the spray oil, didnt think it would be quite a good idea-ha ha!
no,seriously thats what she said but when i told my doctor he said the aqueous cream is the best stuff but he wouldnt bother and to just leave it.we did and it has now completely gone.the doc said that babies apparently get it due to the dry enviroment, whereas when they're inside they're surrounded by water.hopefully the cream you've got will do the trick or maybe if its not too bad you could leave it to see if it goes of its own accord.
have you put anything on your dd2's heat rash or just left it? ive just left ds's but wondered if perhaps i should put something on it.

katzguk · 05/08/2005 21:35

dd2 was very spotty too GP said it was probably infant acne and would clear up but prescibed sudocream for it. i didn't use it but low and behold spots all gone. i guess she was spotty from 4 weeks to about 7 weeks she's now 8½ weeks and has lovely clear skin

charleypops · 06/08/2005 12:05

In retrospect, I can't feel too annoyed about that woman at lunch the other day - she obviously felt threatened by Arlo's far superior gorgeousness

Lynny - I've never had a UTI thank goodness- I can sympathise though because I had something that had similar consequences once though - when I was about 6 I was playing on a climbing frame in the rain and slipped and fell right on my nani. It didn't half hurt when I went for a wee, for about a week. Never forget that!

Well done Bubbs for sorting out that outrageous highchair surcharge - what a cheek! Re the heat rash, when I went to the baby clinic last week there was a 6 month old girl there with a terrible looking heat rash practically all over her little body, poor thing, but Health workers didn't seem too concerned about it and said it would go.

Welcome back Coop

Poor you Jonah - at least you tried doing some culture! My baby loves trying to drink the bathwater too

Uwila - hope your babies continue to sleep through

Trib - I'm so lazy I couldn't bear to get up and plod through half asleep to another room to feed ds, so I'm impressed that you do! Wish my dh was more like yours andc could sleep through his snufflings. You're going to find a lot of help on here with any PND you might have. Hopefully, if you can bear to "talk" about it, it'll help keep things in perspective and to know that it's a common condition. It can definitely triggered I reckon by trying circumstances - like your dh's health and Arlo's seizures for instance.

Hi ladies,
Thanks for the reassurance about the spots, esp from you Kat saying that they did last a while but did go. I will keep going with the aqueous cream and get them double checked with the HV at our weigh in clinic on Tuesday. I am not doing anything about the heat rash apart from trying to keep us all cool with cool baths and fans on in all the rooms. Neither of the dd's actually seem at all bothered about it.
Lynny hope you are feeling better soon. It is hard to remember to look after yourself properly I think and so easy to get run down just when you need all your energy. Hope your UTI goes. I used to find Cranberry juice helped and LOADs of water.
I don't really have a name for my bits . I was trying to think of one to use with dd1 but still haven't decided. Hmmmm.
Bubbs - That is crazy about the highchair. You must be up for spending alot of money there as it is. Outrageous!! Glad you sorted it though. Sounds like a great idea. I think we will be on our own for Xmas this year although my dad and stepmum have said they would come out. I am used to big family dos so it will be odd but it will be difficult to have anyone here as all our stuff will have shipped. I think we will end up at a hotel....we shall see.
Baby crying so need to dash.

mandymac · 07/08/2005 12:04

Charleypops - DH and I are sleeping in separate rooms in the week, and same room at weekends, although he is struggling for space when in with me as I am using a huge shaped dunlopillow for bf in bed.

Cooperoo - dd (6.5 weeks) also has spots on face, behind ears and round neck. GP & HV have said it is probably a combination of heat and maybe milk/posset. Advice was to keep clean (struggling to dig cheese out of neck folds though ), just washing with warm water and if I wanted, to moisturise or use vaseline to form a bit of a barrier. Looks like it is a common problem.

Anyone started actually cutting babies nails yet? We are struggling with filing them/biting them, but dd is scratching herself and us with them. . Just a bit nervous as cut them in hospital and cut her little finger under the nail. .

Cooperoo · 07/08/2005 13:58

Hi Mandy - Thanks for the info about the spots. I am glad everyone is in agreement about them. I am sure the heat is a big factor. I know what you mean about trying to keep the neck clean too. DD2 is much skinnier than dd1 was and so I am finding it a bit easier than I did first time round though . We have tentatively started potty training today but it has been hopeless as dd hasn't done a wee!!! Well she did in her lunchtime nap nappy but that is all. We have been feeding her water since she got up as she has obviously not had enough today so we shall see what happens. We have the chart and the stickers but I am not hopeful. I think it is probably too soon after dd2's arrival but I would love to scrap some of the daily nappy changes sooner rather than later. That is all to report really, still hot here and still feeding dd lots. Take care all.

Cooperoo · 07/08/2005 14:02

Dd's spots are all round her ears too.
So far dd2's nails have flaked off but they are getting to the stage where they need trimming. I will use clippers when she is asleep I think. We shall see. When was your dd born. I had dd2 on the 22nd June. Are they the same age?

mandymac · 07/08/2005 14:18

Yes Cooperoo - exactly the same age, dd born on 22nd June . She was due on 9th, but nearly 2 weeks overdue. 22nd is my sister birthday too.

bubbaloo · 07/08/2005 17:06

mandymac-ds's nails have been growing really fast.i've cut them about 6 times already.
we got a little baby grooming kit from babies r us and use the scissors in there-it's alot easier than i thought it would be.there's also some little clippers in the kit but i havent used them yet.im finding the "cheese" round the neck ok,but his fingers are really cheesy and there's so much fluff there.
