Effie She had something similar a few months ago and DP took her to the GP who said it was just a viral rash. It is much worse this time though. Last time it was pretty much just around her torso but this time it's all over her body, face & nappy area (red bumps like pinpricks on her torso then more measly red bumps/spots on her face). No blisters though, and it doesn't seem to be bothering her (apart from the nappy bit at times). Does that sound like it could be the pox? The rash does seem to have been around a lot longer this time but I'm just thinking it must be something to do with the D&V the DCs & DP have got at the mo.

Beans thanks for the lowdown. However, I think we need more information. Who is better looking, the ex or DH? You or the gf? I am joking of course - clearly you two are the winners in all categories.

poisondwarf · 08/04/2010 16:43

Ooh JB thanks for that. I don't know about date-rape stuff but I'll certainly be sedated. Glad it wasn't painful at least. How did you find the preparation beforehand? Good job I'm "working from home" again next Thursday hee hee. Sounds like fun...

TheInvisibleHand · 08/04/2010 17:18

JB - the stuff we buy is Green People lavender conditioner. I get it from the health food shops near us, but they sell it online. You only need a tiny bit (otherwise lots of grumping while I rinse out), so it lasts us months.

KiwiPanda · 08/04/2010 17:50

Invis What do you use for your DD's eczema - anything you recommend? My DD has it too, quite badly at the moment around her shoulders as that's the place she can reach/scratch. I've tried Aveeno - doesn't seem to do a lot - and am currently using something called VivaDerm (sp??) which seems a bit better. But I guess there's no magic solution ...

KiwiPanda · 08/04/2010 17:51

Oh JB [http://www.greenbaby.com/Green+Baby+Products/baby/nappies/skincare/SHAMPOO+AND+BODYWASH_GBT026.htm this] is nice too. I've been known to use it myself

TheInvisibleHand · 08/04/2010 18:03

Kiwi Eczema is a bit trial and error and I think its different for everyone. Have to say though DD had awful eczema from around 3 months to 6 months to the point that she was raw red from head to toe - we would find her in her cot in the morning with blood covered sheets. Tried all kinds of things, including perscriptions from the GP, but nothing really worked. Went to a very blunt private dermatologist who said that using 1% hydrocortisone on her was like giving aspirin for cancer. So ended up on a combo of stuff, including a stronger steroid cream, which cleared the whole lot up completely within a week. (Also use Cetraben emollient and Balneum in the bath). DD was a transformed character - I hadn't really appreciated quite how miserable the eczema had been making her. Nowadays she hardly has any eczema at all - we still use emollients and bath stuff but v rarely resort to anything else. The other thing that helped was a change of climate - her skin was noticably better after our trip to Denver Col and that seems to have lasted since. So, although I'd instinctively go for the natural route, on this, our experience was that taking the advice of a decent dermatologist did the trick.

waitinggirl · 08/04/2010 18:19

can't help with eczema, but can with colonoscopies... had one a few years ago as had blood in my poo and pee (dh did mention that was a bit odd to have it in both - it only dawned on me after the whole thing that i had started eating beetroot that summer, and indeed, bless you all for paying your taxes which allowed me a colonoscopy because of sodding beetroot). anyhoo... i thought i'd be able to drive up to sheffield afterwards. ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. i was given pethidine (yummy yummy yummy) and basically was happy as larry all the way through, but could barely walk to the taxi afterwards, let alone drive myself to the next corner. i'm not very squeamish about my body, so wasn't particularly embarrassed. hope that helps.

now at home. nice. but no one apart from me and dh (in the eves) looking after
madam. i'm just beginning to regain my sense of smell, taste etc. knackered knackered knackered...

oh, hello poison! lovely to have you back while "working"!!!

Aubergines · 08/04/2010 18:20

Woo Hoo! Parliamen t has dissolved! No more real work until the end of May! That doesn't mean no work at all but next week I am on a v interesting work trip to Dublin, then I have three weeks off and so does DH, then we will be on slightly reduced hours until the end if May. Gosh I love my job.

Lovely to see you PD and to hear your holiday was good. Sorry to hear you have to have a colonoscopy.

Lots of people aren't posting this week. What's going on? Where is Rubes? I hope she is OK. And Summer and JJ. Turnips gone AWOL even on FB and Urbane hasn't reappeared. MoM are you about? NJAN? And what's going on with Kayz? Has she left MN or just this thread? I miss everyone, come back, come back wherever you all are.

poisondwarf · 08/04/2010 19:18

Thanks wg. Aube you lucky thing. Enjoy! I don't strictly speaking have to have a colonoscopy - I asked for one cos my brother's history means I'm at a higher risk and so am entitled to screening. No symptoms or anything like that, so hopefully nothing to worry about.

Veggiemummy · 08/04/2010 20:13

I think that's a good idea PD. Your brave but smart.

I forgot to tell you something that happened this morning. I left the boys with their breakfast this morning while I got dressed, DS2 usually makes a start on his breaky and then I help him with the rest. I was I our bedroom and DS1 called out 'mummy Veggiebaby has got porridge on his leg' I thought he'd just dropped a but off his spoon so I just said it was ok and I'd be in to help in a minute. When I came back into them DS2 had basically painted his (almost) entire thigh. He had also had a good go at the table around him. When I walked him I swear he looked at me as if to say 'so whadaya gonna do about it'. I know they aren't supposed to be that organised mentally but I swear he was thinking that. So I just cleaned him up
and the table and put him down. I tried not to make a fuss as I'm sure he was wanting a bit of a fuss. To be fair though I think he is feeling a bit under par as he has been a bit teary on & off all day and has hardly eaten which is unlike him.

spotofcheerfulness · 08/04/2010 20:13

Think the lucky buggers have all gawn away for easter, Aubs. And I want your job!

Hiya PD, sorry to hear about poor DD, hope it's nothing sinister, and good luck with your colonoscopy. (I just wrote colinoscopy. As if they'd be looking to see if there are any people called Colin residing in your gut). Would be lovely to see you if you can make it down.

WG, my mum did something similar in the 70s when she first started eating beetroot. Think her face was a similar colour when she realised what had happened .

Thanks all for being so sweet about my book. I'm still in two minds about the cover (it's yellow at the moment and wonder if it should just be white - any thoughts those who've seen it?) but I'm looking forward to handing it over to the publishers at the end of the month and getting some more work in. I actually have an idea for a subsequent one but should probably see how this one sells first!

T had his MMR today - really late but it's been the first time since he was one that he's been well enough to have it.

I have to say I am really struggling with the tantrums. I hadn't expected them to happen so soon but the second either something doesn't happen as he would want it to or I stop him doing something (usually to prevent him from injuring himself) he loses the plot and cries and kicks. It makes me really angry and I know it's not his fault and a totally illogical response on my part but I can't seem to be all serene and calm and reasonable as you're meant to!

spotofcheerfulness · 08/04/2010 20:15

X-posts, Veggie, you must be exhausted by now after your crazy night, glad you had a nice time with your compatriots though. Well done for not making a fuss about the porridge incident. I think you need to give me some patience lessons!

Oh, and sorry about the pox, Effie, hope you get the mumsnetting work done that you need.

SummerLightning · 08/04/2010 20:16

Evening all! DH is cooking tea so I am going to sneak on..

Trying not to post from work so I've been a bit quiet, sorry! DS definitely did have the pox but is recovered now and will be back at nursery tomorrow. Sorry Effie to hear DS2 has it too, that sounds like a massive pain...my DS was not too miserable with it at all, a little under the weather but nothing too bad. And he cried if you put on tops that weren't very loose as he had bad spots in his hair poor thing!

Oh and we had a nice time at MILs. So I feel mean for being a bitch. She is a character!! But no entertaining stories for once, sorry...oh but it did remind me LadyT, NO NO NO to the chickens, MIL has chickens and it's always "OH I have to get up at 6:30 to let the chickens out", be back at 4 in the winter to put the chickens back in, feed the sodding things, build things for them, etc, etc. Massive pain in the arse, I reckon. Though I think you can make it easier for yourself by getting enclosures you can leave them in so you don't have to lock them up, maybe. But still.

Hi pd!! I hope the colonoscopy is ok. Sorry I haven't any experience so can't comment, but had to laugh wg at the beetroot tale. Oh dear, you'd think they'd know to ask you that BEFORE the colonscopy. I think you told me something of that tale before when I commented on DS's red poo after he had beetroot.

beans I am with the "it's not that weird" about your ex and the offer on the house! I think it would depend on the ex, and how serious they were at the time but how long ago it was. To be honest i'd probably buy my only serious exes house if I liked it!! But he won't still be living in the manky student flat he was when we were going out!

wg glad you are recovering. I hope things seem better when you are feeling on top form as well too.

Oooh got to go, DH has finished cooking. I am so lucky, risotto, yum yum.

Oh one last thing kp yes I think your mum and sister are being greedy and a little daft re the house. A bird in the hand and all that!! Also a little mean pulling out of an agreed sale like that. But I guess they win on the decision as there's two of them.

JollyBear · 08/04/2010 20:17

OOh I'll get myself to the health food shop and have a look. Thanks kiwi and invisible. kiwi I'd go to the drs as invisible said it is trial and error and you could end up spending a fortune on various lotions and potions. We were given hydromol which worked well and DD hardly has any now. I just put it on her cheeks these days.

WG That must have been scary until you realised it was beetroot.

PD I think you are doing the right thing in having one to put your mind at rest. I have them because my condition means I get blood loss through my gut and they like to have a look sometimes.

Aub Lucky you! I was wondering if this meant you'd be off when they were talking about it on the news.

JollyBear · 08/04/2010 20:39

spot I have no idea how to deal with tantrums either. I try to be serene but it makes me so mad. I feel terrible for just wanting to scream too! Not a helpful approach I'm sure.

I can't comment on your book not being on facebook. Can you give some googleable hints without giving too much away?

SummerLightning · 08/04/2010 20:45

Oh i meant to say congrats on your book spot how exciting!! I had a look on Amazon, looks good. JB do you remember spot's old login (it was her name), if you put that in amazon it comes up. Oh I think I like the cover how it is rather than white.

spotofcheerfulness · 08/04/2010 20:46

Hmm, maybe there's an amazon pre-order page. It has the word Fertile in the title.

spotofcheerfulness · 08/04/2010 20:50

Thanks for the thumbs up, SL! I think yellow too but my co-author not so convinced.
Yes, tis my old login, I actually asked MN to delete my old posts under that name the other day as I realised it was a bit stupid to keep them up. .

Glad you had a better-than-expected time at MILs. But can you make some amusing anecdotes up in their absence please? Surely there must be something chicken-related?

EffiePerine · 08/04/2010 20:56

Pd: I did laugh at colin... hope all goes well. The rash doesn't sound much like pox to me.

Kiwi: ds has v sore skin under his chin (fat and dribbles a lot) and now lots of spots there too. When he's non-infectious again I'll take him to the gp.

Poor bean is suffering, lots and lots of spots and a temp. Have dosed him up and he's finally asleep.

SummerLightning · 08/04/2010 20:59

Tee hee! Well one of the things that made me giggle is that we did a crossword together. Any clue that she couldn't get that I or DH got was deemed to be "stupid" and "Oh that doesn't really mean that". Any she got obviously weren't . HAHA! I did actually point out, "It's a crossword, they're always like this, the answers aren't always exact synonyms"!! But that sounds bitchy, it was more something that just amused me as it's the kind of thing she always does.

Oh also re the cover, I think that white for a cover reminds me a bit of a more "manual" type book, even for baby things. I think yellow is a bit more "touchy feely" if you see what i mean.

Veggiemummy · 08/04/2010 21:11

Oh Spot believe me I am often really shouty with him. Again this afternoon I was shouty at him in front of DS1. The porrige was cleanable just made us a bit late for school run, but when he gets whiney and screamy I really, really can't stand it. It makes me really tetchy and snappy and when he starts up
even the slight whine makes me snap at him. I really feel so bad about it. DH has noticed that when he whines or is whingey he is just getting frustrated about something he is doing. He doesn't necessarily want a response so he just leaves him, but it drives me made, it eats at my soul!

Kiwi emolients and lots of them, whatever brand and make sure you get them on prescription. If you have no joy with your GP get him to refer you on. Also check if the the dermatologist has a specialist nurse in his team or if the community childrens team deals with eczema as it can help to have a contact and maybe someone who can visit you at home. Invis your in North London aren't you, the Royal free childrens community team can help out with eczema if you need it.

Hi all
Have got 'have I got news for you' on and they've just been talking about MN again... I don't think we come across too well

Dora so sorry to hear your news. Is there any family near him?
Lady sorry too about your dad. Glad to hear he's back home now - hopefully you'll get some reassuring news soon but it must be very worrying.
jb P's hair is so fine and not much of it, I generally just wipe her head down with a wet sponge in the bath with no shampoo or conditionner.
On the skin thing, P is very dry and has patches that get sore very easily, so we use epaderm every day and hydrocortisone when she's got sore bits, but this morning I took her swimming (only ever taken her once before and tonight she is red and sore looking in so many places. I've creamed her up, but was wondering what others with eczema-type babies do about swimming?
veggie what exciting thing did you read on WG's FB? I'm not on so I keep missing out on stuff!
Now I'm very interested in all this colonoscopy talk (not in a bum-obsessed freaky way). Things in my bum department haven't been quite right since having P. Anyway today I was on the loo and trying to have a poo (with some difficulty and some blood came out. Not loads, but not just a bit on the tissue. Sorry for got the TMI warning. But it was a few actual drips. I'm guessing it's all piles related, with some biggies inside perhaps, but not sure if I ought to go to the GP. Bizarely my dad and I were talking about colonscopies today, but only because he was telling me that he and his dad when he was alive both have/had diverticulus disease which affects poo, and he wondered if that might be a factor in L's poo issues. No idea if that can affect children, but strange that bottom cameras have come up (no pun intended} twice in one day!
Right Outnumbered is about to come on which demands my full attention
sorry to burst on and talk about poo then go again!
see you later xxx

SummerLightning · 08/04/2010 21:36

trace I remember when MN was last on HIGNFY, every time I am on here, DH makes references to it as it had Alexander Armstrong sayign there are loads of mothers on the internet, and he pretended to be a mum typing and then a baby wailing the background, like "tappity tappity wahhhhhh". Dh thought it hilarious!

I would definitely go to the docs if I were you re the poo situation. (lol at your Bum-obsessed freaky comment!)

I am now off to watch HIGNFY and outnumbered.

LadyThompson · 08/04/2010 21:57

On properly in a minute but for those watching/having watched HIGNFY tonight my DD's godfather was a panellist Whenever they mention MN on the telly, the comments they read out always sound so lightweight/dim. Annoying really.

WomanwiththeYellowHat · 08/04/2010 22:34

Hello all and thank you so much for all the thoughts.

FIL is in Ireland, but no-one lives nearby and there is only limited information at the moment, so as many of the 5 children as can be there are flying in and out at the moment to be with FIL and MIL. All very sad.

On eczema I have found Aveeno good, so can't really help if that hasn't worked. I found with DD2 that it is sometimes weather-dependant (or this may be in my head). I am convinced that when there is a change in temperature she gets eczema and I also do remember that this period of last year was when her skin was worst, but it then got much better during the summer months.

DH thinks it is all in my head re: the eczema but my theory holds true for us!
