Good luck Ekka! Hopefully having big Sis around will help to smooth things along.

Star - I don't actually have to get permission to leave school at lunchtime, I think she was just being understanding. But we do dinner duty sometimes, and she was giving permission for me to get out of that. We have training after school on a Monday and an after-school meeting on a Wednesday which is obligatory, but she's said I can play it by ear and leave if I need to. I'm hoping it won't be neccesary.

StarExpat · 04/01/2010 20:21

That's very nice, then aubergenie Was just wondering as recently found out that at some schools you do need permission to leave in the day. I was

Pistachio - because money is tight and hair colouring is an extra expense!

ronshar · 04/01/2010 20:23

Grey is the new black doncha know Star.

aubergenie · 04/01/2010 20:23

Star - I 'm not quite sure why I just posted such a detailed account of my school's working conditions. Not at all interesting unless you work there.

Also, if you've got light hair, you're in luck -grey hair doesn't show up so easily. It's if you've got really dark hair that it's more obvious.

StarExpat · 04/01/2010 20:31

Aubergenie I find it interesting! I have a friend who works at a school near acton and they actually shut the gates and lock doors at the exits to get off campus after the children leave (immediately after) so the staff cannot get out of the carpark or building until 4.30 at the earliest. They were never allowed to leave in the day.
She said people were often lined up by the gate at 4.20 because sometimes you need to get to the bank during the week and they had to RUN... literally.

StarExpat · 04/01/2010 20:35

LOL Ronshar. I really really really want black hair! I just don't have the face for it. You have to have a gorgeous, well defined face and a nice complexion for it to work. but lovely dark hair is so pretty! I remember asking my mom a lot as a little girl if I could dye my hair black

ronshar · 04/01/2010 20:46

Well then Star when you go to the hairdresser tell them that you would love black hair and they will get you as close to it as they can without washing you out.
You can colour your own hair for less than £5.

aubergenie · 04/01/2010 20:47

Star. That's awful. Surely it's a fire hazard? We all moan at our school but actually we're lucky that they do actually treat us like sensible adults.

Why don't you get some advice from the hairdresser and treat yourself to a bit of colour? There's nothing like a new hairdo to give you a bit of a boost.

ronshar · 04/01/2010 20:47

Oh and last time I looked you did have a gorgeous well defined face.

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/01/2010 20:48

You know I wouldn't bother dying my hair if I were you star. It will just mean lots of (expensive) maintenance afterwards, or looking terrible with different colour roots for months and months whilst it grows out.
If you fancy a change then how about getting some layers put in, or going for a demi-wave instead?

Thanks for the update on the big boy bed ronshar. I'd been wondering how it was going. I think we might go for it soon once I feel that the house has fully(ish) recovered from Christmas and dh has dug the bedguard out of the loft and can be bothered to convert the bed.

Had another trip to the zoo today at dd's request. Nowt so much fun as walking around in -4 degrees and fog with a toddler who hates the cold . Ordered him a balaclava today .

Grey hair is especially noticeable when you pull them out (of your dark hair) and they grow back all short and spiky.

Star - There is no set time for grey hair to appear. I have a friend who went completely grey by the age of 25 and I know people into their 60s with only a handful of grey hairs. Unfortunately it is not something that can be guessed at. Aubergenie is absolutely right. My friend was very blonde and had loads of grey, the only person who could see it was her. I have a few greys, my all seemed to pop up together before I was 30. I suddenly noticed loads in the hair dressers. My hair looked all sparkly.

Ronshar - I suspect that my two haven't been informed of 'the rules'. M is an excellent whirlwind of a girl and much messier & destructive than DS was. And DS is the biggest tell tale I have ever met. DS does have a terrible temper on him though and still regularly cries with frustration over silly things (like not being able to fix the Lego he was playing with).

I am having real trouble keeping up. I think I might have to give up on the 'no internet during the day' resolution. One day about 3.5 million left to maintain.

Ummm....

Aubergenie - So glad S has been better today. It is a horrible feeling, being torn by the need to go to work and your need to stay with your unhappy child. Hope he's ok from now on.

Hegdepig - We have a Wii controller with no batteries in so M can 'join in' with DS when he plays on the Wii. She stands right in front of the telly waving the controller around. She is utterly convinced she is playing too.

Oh yes, congratulations Heather!

Star - Hair colour. I have had pretty much every hair colour known to man and I actually find blonde the hardest colour to pull off. Blonde made me look very round faced even though I wasn't at the time and washed me out more than black ever did. A good softer black to go for is a red/black as it isn't as harsh and it fades to a warm red colour. From a deep honey blonde to black might be a little frightening for a hair-colouring novice! You could add some caramel/chocolate slices to your hair which would add depth and movement to your hair. One colour can be a bit flat on long straight hair. You can use colour to give the impression of body and texture when you have fine hair. Whatever you do we need photos! I really want to get my hair coloured but it is a weight loss treat so will have to wait. I am going to go red with a green/turquoise slice through it. I have seen it in a mag and it looks fabulous!

Day one of diet has been very OK. I wasn't very prepared as we haven't been shopping for ages. I ate a super tiny dinner so was bloody starving at about 8 (and had a couple of Ryvitas with wholenut sugar-free peanut butter).

I am watching DIY SOS and it is very sad. The poor mum in the family has brain cancer.

StarExpat · 04/01/2010 21:01

what's a demi wave?
and I do have layers (have had for 2 years). Long layers and at the front. You just cant tell because my hair is that straight! Lol, though!
True about the roots. I've put on a black wig before for fun... trust me, it doesn't suit me.

I started my new eating plan 2 days ago(I've been a bit of a pig and eating at odd times lately) and I can already feel my clothes fitting better. Thank god.

big boy bed seems so far off for us...
csws that zoo trip sounds horrendous. I do not like this cold.

aubergenie - I think it is a fire hazard but they'd say that they could get out of the building if necessary just not out of the gates... I don't know... I just know it sounded crazy!

ronshar · 04/01/2010 21:14

50ft I cant imagine you with blond hair. Red with a green slice certainly. I had hair so red that in a picture I saw of myself all you could see was the red halo around my head. I tend to have a warm dark brown base coat with a red tone to it now. How red depends on how much I need cheering up.
Star the hairdresser will be able to give you a good consultation about your colour. Ask if you can go in before hand. It is usually free especially if they know you are def coming back to them for the colour etc.

50ftlonglistofResolutions · 04/01/2010 21:42

Ronshar - I had white blonde hair in my late teens and honey blond in my mid twenties. I have also had bright pink, candy-floss pink, pillar-box red, purple and every shade of 'natural colour' from blue/black to white! I stick to dark colours these days, but I had just booked an appointment to have my hair coloured (I was going to try white blonde again) when I found out I was pregnant with M. I think I look too haggard now and the white blonde might just look like I've gone grey! Hope the sinuses feel better soon. You have my sympathy.

Heather - congratulations! I meant to say that in my earlier post, sorry

Pistachio - I'm not actually going back to work. Before ds was born we started dd with a cm to give me a day a week just with ds, but it worked so well that we've decided to try settling ds there as well so that when dd starts at nursery for 5 half days a week in April I'll have a half day with just her. It will mean in the interim I may get a child-free day or two to myself . Dare I say I'm sneakily looking forward to it . I think dh is as well - he's hoping I might get some housework done on that day I think

Aubergenie - glad to hear S was more settled today.

All this talk of hair appts has reminded me that I've not been to the hairdressers in months. Star, my dsis has been going grey since she was 16, whereas I have yet to notice any grey hairs (though I don't look too closely ) so I think its mainly luck....

Honeymoonmummy · 04/01/2010 23:24

Hey all, I've just read backwards and thought ooh how did this conv about hair colour start and...it was me on about GHD's!!

Just a quickie to say Pops still not been great today, I am starting work tomorrow but working from home and DH will look after Pops but I'm around if she needs BF. She had some raisin bread this morning and promptly vomited it all up just before we went docs Doc said it's a tummy bug. She managed a tiny bit of soup at lunch and a bit of pasta at tea which she's kept down but it's mainly been BF today, hence the decision to stay at home tomorrow. I'm lucky my current supervisor had a baby about 2 weeks before me and is also still BF!!!!!

Night all!

StarExpat · 05/01/2010 08:06

oh that is very lucky, HMM! Great situation

50ft what's your natural colour?

I've never had a colour in my hair other than my natural colour. I heard it dries out your hair and makes it less soft, so I didn't do it when my friends were doing it

heather1980 · 05/01/2010 09:24

i've never coloured my hair either. i wanted to go black when i was a teenage goth but my mum wouldn't let me and i'm too scared now!

we're snowed in here dd started pre school yesterday and it's closed today, good job really as i can't get out of the house. we've had well over a foot of snow overnight. i am so sick of the snow, and my sky box isn't working so i can't even stick cbeebies on!

StarExpat · 05/01/2010 09:29

go here heather and save your sanity

I played this on DH's laptop for Q when our TV wasn't working for a day Also did youtube searches for popular theme songs from the shows (which is all Q really likes at this point anyway... like the theme tune to chuggington... over and over and over ... and over and over again!)

StarExpat · 05/01/2010 09:34

And I was never goth. I just wanted black hair because it's so pretty. When we lived in Japan if I'd go to a hair salon they loved the fact that I had naturally light hair. I always thought it was a bit weird since Japanese hair is so lovely!! They would spent ages just brushing and running their fingers through my hair before the wash, after the wash, after the cut, after the dry... felt sooo lovely I love when someone plays with my hair!

heather1980 · 05/01/2010 09:38

thanks star.
it's not working coz of the snow, i hope that it'll be back up later.
we're watching dvds and having a pj day. school have just rang and said not to come in, which would be ok if i could get out, and they think they'll be shut tomorrow too as all the pipes have frozen overnight.
