Pepper - M had a 'red ear' the other week and we had an emergency antib prescription. We didn't need it in the end, she gt better on her own so hopfully J will too. I did consider filling it for myself to take for my sinuses.

I'll tell you the most horrid thing this week about not having a car - our drive is empty. Sunday night 2am, we're woken by a strange noise, then a few minutes later the same noise but a bit quieter, DH got up and searched the house as we just couldn't place it. nothing out of place, but I had seen the outside light come on when we first woke up - so his theory is that someone thought the house was empty and tried first the front door - which we're above, and then the back door - further away so quieter!
Even if that wasn't what it was - it's such a horrid thought and is making me feel really vulnerable at night. .
Have moved all the presents upstairs and my purse and laptop. We have absolutely nothing else of value really!

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:03

myjob lol about the cream. I'm sure she will be ok with it. Maybe it will work out better

50ft I agree. I know how painful it is to have the operation but psychologically I'd prefer it.

I've been preoccupied and obsessed with calling preschools for information and visits lately. He can't sign on until October 2nd when he's 2, but I won't really need him to go anywhere until September anyway as between DH and I we have from mid June - 1st week in Sept off.

i want him to be in a social setting but not at a nursery or childminder... it's quite fun talking to all of the nurseries. Some are already fully booked for sept/oct 2010

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:06

oh pepper How unsettling!

Pepper - That's really horrible. I've had a similar experience in my flat and it makes you feel really one edge for ages.

Star - Did you hear back from your own school about Q's place there?

I'm absolutely full of cold today. I read through and now can't remember what anyone else has said. Sorry if I've missed anything important.

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:38

aubergenie - Yes, but they don't do bursaries at my school until they are 3. They said I'll likely get one yay! He just needs to start when he's 3. No bursaries for the 2 year old program for some reason
I will be SO happy when he's at school with me!! The preschools I'm looking at are all really close to my school anyway, so it should be ok....

50ftChristmasTree · 15/12/2009 20:39

I can completely sympathise with you Pepper. We were burgled about three years ago while I was at work. We have an Edwardian semi and we're in a conservation area so we aren't allowed to change the front door, so it was very easy to break into. I came home to find two men coming out of my house and noticed that one had stolen ds's apple juice (how odd) so I shouted at them, at which point they realised they'd been rumbled and legged it. They didn't steal much and didn't make much mess but it was horrible. Made me paranoid about any sound for AGES afterwards, especially as the police helpfully suggested that they were probably planning to come back in the night. If I hadn't been wearing my stupid shoe/boots that I can't walk in I would be have home earlier and been met by two men in my house. So lucky for them I didn't (I know where the axe is kept)! I hope you get your car back if only for your peace of mind.

Star - Why so against nursery? DS LOVED nursery, I probably wouldn't send M to the same one as the staff have changed and they all seem about 14. Or maybe that's because I'm not a young mummy anymore. [old]

Evening ladies. Dd still keeps coming downstairs , and ds didn't go to bed until 8 tonight, as he slept from 1:50 until 4:30 this afternoon .

Eek for possible burglars pepper. I would get really freaked by stuff like that. It's one of the advantages of living where we do - not really an opportunist burglary hotspot! Although the lone cottage down the hill was apparently broken into a few years back.

No snow here whoever asked.

Glucose tolerance test for me tomorrow, so am on nothing but water after 9pm. No doubt I shall feel quite sick and weak in the morning by the time I get to the hospital. Ds is going to a childminder for 3 hours (all she could do), and dh will pick him up and play with him and/or give him lunch whilst waiting for my return. Hopefully it will go better than the one at the same stage with ds, when I was violently ill after the phlebotomist jiggled the needle around in my arm trying the find the vein that he had missed.

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:51

Not against nursery at all. I would just prefer Q go to a preschool instead. There are several montessori around me that I like, too. I'm going to visit more next week and first week in January Also, it's a shorter day for all the kids and exactly my work hours. I like the idea of a structured day with trained montessori or preschool teachers rather than just nursery nurses. I realize how snotty that sounds as I jsut wrote it... sorry... as a teacher myself and having worked in several childcare settings throughout uni...etc... I'm too aware of how different settings are staffed. There is nothing wrong with nursery nurses. I'm not saying there is. I'd just prefer Q go to a preschool is all.

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:53

Good luck for tomorrow csws yuck about last time!!

Q slept from 10.40am-2.00pm today. Sometimes I wonder why I can't just keep him in my classroom if he's just going to sleep most of the day away....

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:55

This holiday, feb holiday, april holiday, may holiday and this summer I'm going to work on getting him to nap for shorter periods so he'll maybe sleep more at night. I'll probably have the most luck with it in the summer, so may as well just leave it for now.

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 20:56

oh... sorry...
one more!
for all the posts. I post prematurely often!

I think I'd die if Q didn't nap. Mind you, when we're in school and not on a weekend, I don't get to enjoy it but I feel less guilty for whoever is looking after him that he sleeps most of that time!

StarExpat · 15/12/2009 21:08

has everyone seen about the Duggar's 19th baby??
That's like having a one room schoolhouse in your home. While breastfeeding.

I have no idea of the difference between a nursery and a preschool. Can someone explain for me, as it would be useful. Also, we're entitled to a certain number of hours free nursery at some point aren't. Anyone know when and how many?

50ft - Those kind of near misses don't bear thinking about. Although many years ago a friend of mine came across a burgler in his house while he was a student and he was such a sad bloke (the burglar, not my friend) that he somehow ended up chatting to him and making him a cup of tea!

pepperrabbit · 15/12/2009 21:31

aubergenie, preschools are just for 2yrs - 4yrs and operate during school hours/terms normally. Some are still 2yrs 9months minimum.
Nurseries offer all day care, usually all year for babies up to 5yr olds, lots combine a pre-school offering as well and are eligible for your funding also.
Mine go to a small nursery as babies and then pick upa few extra preschool sessions at the feeder pre-school for the local infants, just so they know some other kids when they start school proper.
Has worked well for me, pre-school is more "grown-up" cos there are no babies.
I like the mix the nursery offers and also have been able to send DS1 to the nursery with the littleys even though he's Yr1 during the hols when his childminder is off, as he's not 6 yet.
not cheap though!
I expect lots of other people have typed that faster than me!

aubergenie · 15/12/2009 21:39

Thanks Pepper. The terminology is confusing. Our school is a primary with nursery attached, but it's a nursery school, which I suppose must be the same as a preschool and different from a nursery.

aubergenie · 15/12/2009 21:40

Oh, and hope it all goes OK tomorrow CSWS.

pepperrabbit · 15/12/2009 21:43

I was always pants at reading the whole question....
15 hours a week roughly from the term after they turn 3. at £4.10 or £4.20 an hour ? So you may have to pay top up fees at a more expensive pre-school (like a montessori). I use 13 hours of DS2's allowance at the state pre-school and therefore pay nothing to them on top and put the last 2 hours to nursery to marginally offset the fees for the days I work. It's easy to split the allowance so you can use 2 different places if you want.
The cut off dates for the terms are 1st Jan/1st April and 1st Sept. So even though DS2 was 3 on 11th April he got no funding for the summer term this year as he missed the cut off by 11 days....
Are you all asleep yet?

star - you'll prob find that he naps less as he gets older anyway, although he might not replace it all with night sleep!

myjob - yes, driving, but leaving ds' car seat with him at childminders, and dh will have dd's anyway, as he'll have to drop her at school in the morning (opposite direction to hospital), so if it all goes belly up then at least there's only me to sort out!
