Q still wears those leather slippers. Are his feet ruined because he hasn't been in cruisers? He has some gap shoes (handed down) but they are so clunky and heavy that he finds it hard to run in them. We just put the slippers back on after about 10 minutes when we try those. I know we'll have to get him proper shoes soon but don't like the idea of £30 every couple of months

Star - DS never had cruisers and he walks fine (well he was pigeon-toed but that was nothing to do with shoes or lack thereof). Ds had bare feet, just like M, right up until he needed proper walking shoes for nursery. By the time he got his first pair of shoes he had been walking for about 2 months. Walking in shoes takes some getting used to for them as the sole is much stiffer but they do get used to it.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/10/2009 16:55

God no star - his feet are absolutely fine in those nice soft shoes. As pistachio says, the other shoes are only for protecting feet outdoors and in yukky weather. The bones in their feet are still soft at this age, so the important thing is not to put them in too hard a shoe, but there's no such thing as too soft a shoe for foot development.

cool thanks! He's outside a LOT, but it's relatively dry and when it's a bit wet, he just gets a bit wet But we haven't taken him out in puddles just yet - we've been quite lucky with the weather of late actually... knock on wood!

CSWS - I keep getting that too. It happened to me the other day and I ended up double posting. Oh the shame.....!

M took 15 (yes DH counted) steps on her own today. She is desperate to walk and gets really frustrated with herself when she falls. I really don't think it will be long.......

star6 · 19/10/2009 18:41

Go M!!
I forgot to say congrats Emma on walking, too!

I hope she's walking by Wednesday Babies can take off together

star6 · 19/10/2009 18:42

And 50ft - Q still falls even though he walks... well, you saw him. He trips over the littlest thing!

Q went to bed just before 6.30pm
He was rubbing his eyes and so tired and when I brought him in the bedroom and cuddled with him, he just laid there in my arms. I put him in his cot and he didn't even protest at all. so tired! Weird. He had a few naps today, too... not long ones, though. He's been doing a 3 - 3.5 hour one in the middle of hte day, which he didn't get today, so maybe that's it? strange.

star6 · 19/10/2009 19:10

myjob N will walk when she wants to
Maybe Q will convince her tomorrow Or maybe N will convince Q to chill out a bit and sit still
DH and I could not believe how relaxed csws' D was when we went to her house. Q has never sat still for any period of time. Even as a baby he wanted to be carried around/walked around all the time.

star - D is my compensation for P as a baby .

@ 3.5hr naps! Ds generally has 1hr 10mins, or occasionally 1.5 hrs or 2 hours as an exception. Maybe the long nap is why he's not sleeping so well at night?

star6 · 19/10/2009 20:05

ohhh this should be FUN, then! Q and N will have a fun time having tantrums together
Q is starting to scream like someone has just cut his arms off when I take something from him or make him go in a direction where he doesn't want to go or tell him he can't play with something (something dangerous... I'm not a meanie!). It's not very flattering...
Oh yes, I almost forgot!!
Q has been biting my hand (and DH's) when we take him away from something that he wants or when we're walking outside and lead him somewhere he doesn't want to go...
He takes my hand in his two hands, then opens his mouth wide and bites it! . He does an angry scream, too... so I know it's not a kiss. Is this normal??

Q ate NO dinner tonight. In fact, he hasn't had anything to eat since about 3pm.
He wanted to sleep, though.
I think these babies are past the point where they wake up hungry in the night. He's gone to bed on very little food recently, too and was fine. I have a sippy cup of water in the bedroom and at 4 or 5am when he wakes I let him sip at some water, then he settles back to sleep after that.

Right, enough about Q.... I've really rambled on there.

star6 · 19/10/2009 20:07

csws - he sleeps best at night when he's had a 3 or 3.5 hour nap. Horrible sleep comes from having less than 2 hour nap (for his main nap) and less then 30 minutes (for his second nap). He's an odd duck.

Hmmm, lots of little naps instead of a big one and not eating might mean that he's brewing a bug star, so look out!

It's normal I think for them to find some way to express their feelings when they don't like something. Biting is an unfortunate choice of behaviour to demonstrate his point, but not massively uncommon. I would recommend finding a way to let him know right from the word go that biting is not acceptable behaviour, because it doesn't go down well when mixing with other children if he chooses to bite them.

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 19/10/2009 20:11

again that he still has 2 naps! Although I suppose that he's wearing himself out a fair bit with all that walking .

How many naps are the other babies taking?

OP posts:
star6 · 19/10/2009 20:13

Thanks, csws. We have been trying to let him know it's not ok. But then, he'll just be walking around with a toy, like a block or something and shrieking with delight and laughing and then all of a sudden stop and bite the toy hard, so we're just like, ?? what is going on?

Btw I had a giggle reading that "biting is an unfortunate choice of behaviour to demonstrate his point" you're so lovely and nice You sound like me trying to write comments on report cards for misbehaving kids! You'd be very good at that

Maybe he's brewing a bug as a special pressie for N tomorrow and D, M and W on Wednesday

star6 · 19/10/2009 20:16

Do you think maybe something is wrong with him since he naps that long? A friend of mine has a DS with diabetes and one of the signs was sleeping a lot...

star6 · 19/10/2009 20:16

There should be a worried smiley
