All the recipes sound good, I must try and be more inventive than just pureeing bananas and carrots! Waiting to get a box of organic fruit and veg in a couple of weeks so hopefully that will be full of lots of interesting things.

My dd has just started moving. I don't think I can quite call it crawling as she is only using one side of her body to move along. She does move pretty fast though and seems to be most interested in getting to all the dangerous things like plug sockets, wires and electrical items. We are going to spending the bank holiday weekend baby-proofing the house.

Tipex - must be lovely to hear all the mama and raras! My dd spends most of her vocal time making very high-pitched noises, which is very funny but not sure what the neighbours think!

What's the skip hop bag?

Nik72 · 28/08/2005 10:50

I went to that Kellymom site too & wished I hadn't as came away feeling HUGELY guilty for starting weaning before 6 months, but I wanted to start before going back to work. Then I thought that me & my sisters were all started on solids at 4 months and we're fine (the extra heads were removed easily, just a small scar & the hairy back waxes off beautifully - hee hee!)

gossifer · 28/08/2005 11:05

and tipex, love the rara! leon is vocal but not with particular sounds, totally love the image of you lying there listening.....

Luggs · 28/08/2005 11:18

I have a 10 month old (22/10//04) and feel inadequate as baby can barely crawl (a comando style suffle!) let alone walk !!! He is lovely and chatty/smiley though. Anyone else have a baby that can barely crawl or should I be worried?

My first son didn't crawl until 10 1/2 months which drove me nuts wondering whether he was alright. This time I am praying that Sam doesn't crawl until then as I worry he is going to get to all of his big brothers toys and the harmonious house we have at the moment (big brother looking out for baby brother) will turn to war fare when Sam crawls through the middle of big brothers train track!!

Hazellnut · 30/08/2005 09:24

Nik72 - my brother was weaned at 1 month and was on 3 meals a day by 2 months . No obviously attributable problems (although I sometimes wonder !!). Could you imagine what people would say if you did it now !

We tried dd in her back carrier rucksack thing at the weekend and she seemed to like it too ! Even slept in it so must be comfy. I had a bit of a go at carrying her too and it was fine except for the hair pulling !

Had dd weighed on friday and she has now gone up to about the 14th centile, as has her height - woo hoo !!

Wombat, the skip hop bag is a changing bag I have been going on about ! It clips onto the buggy but also has another strap. SL was after one that clipped to a buggy so I had recommended this one but now not sure it would be big enough. Mind you, on saturday I managed to get a whole day's provisions in it.... The only down side is it does tip over my maclaren (but not the M&p) buggy but once dd is in it, its fine !

Gossifer - you mentioned Leon had and loved smoked haddock - how did you do it? Realised the freezer is v. low on food for dd so have to go into production again !

hi everyone...
well we have crawling! having to watch linus like a hawk now. yesterday dp left him on the floor with some toys and came back in to find him by the drawer in our tv cabinet, opening and closing it and trying to pull stuff out! he's also pulled the gamecube off
this morning he went under the table and was sick on the floor and sat there rubbing it into the carpet until i could get under to drag him out!

wish he wasn't moving now!!!

hazellnut... shame about the skip hop bag, the little company also do ones that clip on which look a bit bigger. will have to investigate more. on the skip hop does it just have poppers on the strap which you clip round the handles?

tipex, we had a whole day of mama mama mama... but he hasn't done it since! naughty baby! w mostly get baba now and lots of other weird and wonderful noises.
he has also really started to notice that he can do things with his hands and he sits and watches them while wiggling his fingers and turning his hand etc etc....

what an exciting age!

W0MBAT · 30/08/2005 11:22

I know what you mean about the crawling. I am chasing dd constantly at the moment and she is starting to be sick a lot again. I was really pleased when she started crawling and now know why second-time mums say 'you don't want them to crawl soon believe me'. On the plus side, she does seem less frustrated as she's able to get to the places she wants to now.

Luggs, sorry that your ds is not crawling but I wouldn't worry at all. They are all individuals and he may just be building up to walking earlier. My dd has always loved me on her tum so I knew she'd start crawling early. Like I said above, I kind of wish she wasn't now.

As for talking, no 'mama' or 'dada' yet.

gossifer · 30/08/2005 11:34

hello all,
and welcome luggs - as everyone else has said, i wouldn't worry about crawling, all babies take different time to do things

tipex - had our first night of up every hour, leon has an awful cold, poor thing (in this weather???) and is sleeping v.badly, so i have some idea of what your life is like

starlover - wow! to the crawling & good luck leon does the hand inspection thing too!

we had our first 'mama' on sunday night, only once, but at least he can make that `shape!!

hazelnut - i poached the haddock in milk for five mins (you can use water) and just gave him little bits, has to be his most favourite thing ever!

does anyone have any recommendations about rucksack carriers - think its about time i went shopping............

W0MBAT · 30/08/2005 11:36

that was meant to say 'love being on her tum'. If she liked me being on her tum, she'd be one flat baby!

gossifer · 30/08/2005 12:06

wombat

Hazellnut · 30/08/2005 12:57

at wombat - what a picture that makes !!

SL - I will try and explain how the handles work but fear I may end up confusing you as I won't explain it very well. The bag has two different straps, tiny ones which are attached to the bag and a long one which unclips. If you want to attach it to the pushchair you unclip the long strap and the tiny ones (which fold into the bag) just go round the handles and clip into the clipholder (for want of a better word !). When you then take it off, you unclip the tiny straps and tuck them in and then clip the longer strap onto the clipholders... Clear as mud ??

Gossifer - will try the smoked haddock - am off to supermarket later to buy lots of ingredients for more food so will stock up !! As for the back carrier, we've got a babydan which we got half price from Kiddicare (because we bought something else from them and they sent us an offer code !) so was only £25. It seems good but then I didn't really compare any because this one was cheap !

OP posts:
starlover · 30/08/2005 18:16

hmm i think i vaguely get it.... the ones i have seen just have a long strap and 2 poppers on each end of the strap (near the bag) and you just kind of double it up on itself round the handle iyswim?
but think it makes quite a big loop so will still slide down the handle....
argh! i need to find somewhere that stocks the bloody things!

Hazellnut · 30/08/2005 19:19

I think you can tighten the straps on the skip hop bags so they don't slide down but definitely I think best to go and look at both if you can but have never seen either stocked in the shops. Guess the JJMB shops have the skip hop but there aren't that many shops IIRC.... What a dilema !

Looked at the smoked haddock Goss, but it had bones in and I was just too lazy/paranoid to buy it ! Just did dd cod in tomato with mashed potato. Was really easy - bunged the tomatoes in the microwave for a minute to burst the skins, peeled the skins off mushed up the toms on the cod and wrapped it in foil and put it in the oven for about 12 mins. Mashed it with the potato and a bit of milk. DD loved it !! Am trying out recipes that I can do on hols away from blender and freezer !! Let me know if anyone has any ideas !

fruitful · 01/09/2005 14:21

Sounds like you're all having fun! Ds can't sit yet and no longer bothers to roll so I've got plenty of time before I need to worry about stairgates. He has just worked out that he can reach to pick up the toy on the floor next to him rather than lying there like a lump and whinging till someone hands it to him, so that's useful!

We're going to start food on Saturday (well, baby rice). What are your top tips?

We survived camping, it was even quite fun! Except for trying to get out of my sleeping bag to feed ds at 5am. Dd had a blast, we hardly saw her. Got home after 5 days and realised we hadn't washed either of our kids at all, oops.

Had a bit of excitement on Monday morning when we spotted a wierd rash on ds's legs - red spots on top, and purpley spots under the skin - and it didn't disappear when we pressed a glass on it. So off we went to the emergency GP, who said that ds was far too happy to have meningitis, and it was insect bites. That explains the sudden bout of yelling at 11pm then !

starlover · 02/09/2005 09:46

hiya fruitful! ahh i long for the days when linus wasn't up and about! savour it!

foodwise, i always got on better with baby rice if i made it slightly thicker than they suggest, that way it doesn't all just run out!
i think you're best off sticking with the baby rice for the first week while he gets used to it and then moving onto purees mixed with the rice (banana, apple, carrot etc). Linus has a sweet tooth so fruit always goes down better!

sounds like you had a good camping trip. no washing is always great, from a kids point of view! will you be doing it again?
we're off to devon on the 19th to see the other grandparents which will be a mixture of nice to be away, but also having to put up with being with them (and my parents) 24/7!

you must've been relieved about the rash! i'd have been soooooo worried if that was Linus. thank goodness it was only bites.

starlover · 02/09/2005 09:47

hazellnut.... am off to trawl baby shops today in search of the elusive changing bgs! will update if i find any!!!

Hazellnut · 02/09/2005 13:25

How exciting Starlover, I await news with baited breath !! But don't tell me if its better than the skip hop. I'll then want that one too !

Fruitful, the camping sounds fun and glad the rash was nothing serious !!

roosmum · 02/09/2005 17:18

hi mums! & wow to babes on the move (uurgh at linus's under-table sick antics!) roo can do - what looks like - press ups, quite impressive as he can get right up onto hands & toes. without technically crawling he can get most anywhere he wants now...still haven't really babyproofed, really should!

getting a bit more sleep here now, roo wakes about 2ish, then sleeps until abt 7, so that's a big improvement! also looking forward to a girly meal out with a bunch of mums later...only the 2nd time i've been out for an evening since roo was born

i'm now gonna have to google a 'skip hop', cos i don't know what it is/looks like! i've tried various bags, some baby some not, have ended up with a basic rucsac, stuffed with baby kit etc, not my most glam era by any means...! it does the job, but a cute dedicated baby bag would be nice i guess. baby bag isn't something i've ever
thought of getting, oooh more shopping
(hey as long as it's not nappies!!)

ok, gotta go make sure roo's eating his dinner...
xxx

Hazellnut · 02/09/2005 18:27

in case you haven't found them roosmum go to changing bags and they are in there somewhere

Glad you are sleeping better and have a nice meal out !

Just had to check back on here to see if there was any news on the changing bag situation !! I really need to get a life !!

Tipex - I sooooo know what you're talking about with day time naps !! Night time dd is great - sleeps basically 12 hours so for that I am v.v. grateful but her daytime naps have gone pear shaped too. She will be yawning away, rubbing her eyes, I put her in the cot and she winds herself up to uncontrollable hysterical crying, tears and up on all fours crying and screaming, banging legs and everything and she is otherwise a really happy baby. Sometimes i take her out and lie her on another bed for a while and she'll drop off, or she will always go to sleep in the car but not anymore in the buggy. She has also started taking a while to get to sleep in the evenings (but once asleep, is good touch every piece of wood in the house !)

Funnily enough though, when she is coming up to a new tooth (we have tooth number 2 now) she is really sleepy and has long easy daytime naps !!

Bless 'em !!
