more time for MN gossifer!

roosmum · 22/08/2005 12:01

hiya gossifer, i'm soooo that you get to sleep til 7.30!! honestly haven't had even a 1/2 decent night's sleep for a month now - would love to go back to roo sleeping 9-4!! & isn't it hard trying to 2nd guess them all the time....eg is it teeth/enough food/blah blah, i just dunno what's going on with him some days. he's really interactive & communicative tho, which is lovely, but i find it hard work keeping him entertained. what do you guys all do, any bright ideas?? roo like singing, esp with actions, general rough play like baby-flying, rolling around on floor etc, but tbh i get really wearied of all these things! am i the only one??!

roosmum · 22/08/2005 12:02

gossifer - fibs!!

starlover · 22/08/2005 12:02

feel the same roosmum in regards to entertaining during the day!
i have got a baby sign book which i am going to have a go at with linus.
may see if there are any sing and sign classes round here too... that may make the communicating a little easier (eventually)

have been trying to make sure i go for a walk with him every day but aside from that not really sure what to do!

Nik72 · 22/08/2005 12:07

I'd second tots - made in scotland too! Still love my MEOs, great for those post solids poo explosions! Tots look cuter though.
Dd has started growling - very funny! She gets a bit frantic when she can't see me now, hope she's ok when she starts nursery.
Good to hear everyone's news, sympathies to the non-sleepers.

roosmum · 22/08/2005 12:08

think it must be the sleep deprivation, but i feel like posting a wild line of for people with sleeping babies!

...everyone's gonna think i'm odd now...

sl - i went to a babysigning taster when roo was tiny, it was lots of fun (lots of songs with signs) but they need to be abt 8mths before it has a good chance of working with them (so the sign lady said). i'm also planning to go to classes when he's a little older - can hardly believe he's nearly 7mths, seems no time ago we went to this taster class - & he was abt 8 weeks i think!!

hi jolly4, just managed to read the thread a little better - sorry to hear of your nursery probs, & hope it's not getting you down fwiw, relatively small things (last night - not being able to cook an egg just how i wanted to....pathetic!) had me feeling furious!! have lost all sense of perspective recently

Nik72 · 22/08/2005 12:10

Do get a wee bit bored with the entertaining, too. Glad i'm not the only one, felt a bit of a Bad Mum as she's so sweet.

gossifer · 22/08/2005 12:20

roosmum - you post as many as you want! i just hope things change for you soon
i try and make sure that we have a good bit of time outside (she looks out the window at the pouring rain......) everyday, fresh air and all that and also leon has a good old kick/splash in the bath

i totally agree about entertaining and feeling like a bad mother - sometimes i just haven;t got anything left! leon loves the bouncing chair in the doorway - always a good last resort! also his new toy is stacking cups and he loves them they roll away and come back and he can bang them! only prob is when they've all rolled away and he cannot reach them!

but my latest thing is kew gardens with all the trees - a membership is £35 a year and it's easy to get there on the train from here; as we walk through or lie in the grass leon is entranced - any parks near you with big big trees?

Nik72 · 22/08/2005 12:24

We're near Holyrood Park/Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh so I try & get round there fairly regularly. Good exercise pushing Dd up the hill and she chunters away to herself quite happily. Once she's older I'll take her up to feed the ducks on the loch. It's sunny here, just to make you all jealous & we had BBQs on saturday & sunday.

roosmum · 22/08/2005 12:32

thanks gossifer!

we're in york & there's a lovely big park in town, complete with big trees, plus lots of ducks/geese etc. there's also the uni campus - similar setup, built around a large lake with lots of birds living on it.
no good on a day like today tho...
just the post office in the rain - when i feel brave enough!
plus my other problem is that roo's recently decided he'd rather be carried than go in his buggy - anyone else getting this? it's a real pain!!

futurity · 22/08/2005 12:52

i'm not sure what to do this afternoon due to the rain and having bad cough so can't take the boys swimming. I hate rainy days! My older son is a constant source of entertainment for Sam..I remember when I just had one at this age and how hard it was to entertain all the time. I think a garden centre and trip to cafe is called for!

Also suffering from lack of sleep due to early rising Sam and his pooing...I won't bore you here...there is a whole thread dedicated to it!

Thanks for the sympathy Tipex - dd was fine after the initial shock of her tumble (guess everyone else thought I was too terrible to comment ). I've felt dreadful about it ever since.

We also have a tooth !! 2 days of horrid horrid nappies and it popped through. V. exciting although am not looking forward to the rest if they are accompanied by the screaming and wailing and pooing !! Poor dd !!

She also mastered sitting on her own about the same time so its all change around here. Still trying to crawl but not getting anywhere ! Being a bit of a pickle with daytime sleeping though - is clearly tired but won't sleep, eventually got her to sleep this morning on my bed and then ahd to move her to the cot...

SL - don't know if you saw my thing on the changing bags thread but purpluedudahs can't get the expo or dash at the mo so I have just ordered the duo so will let you know what its like when it arrives.

Hello again to Roosmum !! Gossifer, glad you're enjoying Kew, I am quite close to it but haven't been for ages so will have to get over there. As for entertaining the little ones, I have signed up now for a long swimming course, and a music group thingy and I am also now going to a postnatal exercise class to which I am dashing to now (although not sure how long I can get away with going to it given that dd is 7 months tomorrow - yikes where did that time go ?!)....

W0MBAT · 23/08/2005 10:54

Hazellnut - I haven't been around for a little while but just wanted to say don't feel bad about it, my dd has also fallen off the bed. It was actually while my dh was looking after her but I'm sure if it hadn't been him, it would have been me. She was fine after a good cry. Actually, today I almost had a similar thing as dd climbed out of her bumbo, which was on top of the dining table. I thought they were supposed to be safe!

SL - I am doing signing with dd and I think she's starting to understand some of the signs as she seems to calm down when I sign 'milk'.

Sorry to annoy everyone but dd slept from 7pm-7am yesterday and i feel like skipping everywhere today because I'm so well rested and happy. Yippee!

Sorry if I've missed some of your posts, I will be sure to keep up to date with them from now on.

gossifer · 23/08/2005 11:02

hello all
wombat - so happy for you - have a great day!

hazelnut, leon fell off the bed last week, we have a superkingsize and he made his way all the way down to the bottom and over from the middle! had a bruise on his head and i felt awful - but he is ok and i have learnt - i really don't think anyone has not experienced something like this.....
good luck with the teeth - nothing happening here!
xxxxx

starlover · 23/08/2005 11:07

hello everyone! this thread is getting pretty busy now isn't it!

hazellnut... don't feel bad about your dd falling off bed. Linus has done it twice now, once when i was in bed with him (!) and yesterday when I left him sat right in the middle of the bed, went to the wardrobe and heard a bump and he'd somehow managed to fling himself right off!!!! He was just lying on the floor on his tummy looking a bit bemused. lol
shame aboutt he bag... have also been looking at the ones by LIttle Company, which also clip onto pushchair straps... but it's hard to tell what they'll be like unless you can actually see them isn't it.. will await your review of the duo eagerly!!!!

wombat... how long have you been signing for? I have started with Linus today and he is very interested in the weird things i am doing with my hands! we've started with "eat" "milk" "bed" "mummy" and "daddy"

tipex we've tried a lot of different foods (i think). favourite so far is butternut squash and sweet potato (with ANYTHING)
he also loves avocado with a little mixed herbs in.
we do all different kinds of mixtures with the following: baby corn, green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, parsnip, squash, sweet potato, regular potato, avocado, carrots, leek, celery
fruits we have tried: mango, papaya, apple, pear, grapes, plum, apricot, banana, melon

Linus likes mashed potato with a bit of mixed herbs in and a tiny bit of cheese on the top.
he will eat ANYTHING sweet and we just do random mixtures of fruit. mango and papaya goes down well, as does apple and apricot
we also mix fruit in with natural yoghurt

if he has too much dairy though it makes him quite sick so i am trying to just build it up very gradually.

Has anyone else seen the mums4 yoghurts? they have no added sugar at all... just yoghurt and fruit. I finally found some in tesco but linus 3was really sick after it. not sure if he had just had too much or what... he has had ordinary natural yoghurt before and been fine.

Nik72 · 23/08/2005 11:31

Hi all,
Hope you're feeling better Hazellnut, I think we've all had similar moments - they really keep you on your toes don't they & this is even before crawling/walking. Am already panicking gently about what she'll get up to when mobile - not so worried about our house but my parents place could difficult to babyproof. I sometime feel motherhood is just one long guilt trip & am trying hard not to get too uptight about things. Wish I was more like DH, he doesn't endlessly fret about things!!

Just a quick query for those using formula - when did you go to the follow on milk? Am using aptimil 1 at the mo but she's on 2 meals a day so may start taking less milk if I up it to 3 meals. Is the follow on milk more concentrated??? Cheers.

starlover · 23/08/2005 11:40

hi nik!
we're not bothering with follow-on. the only difference is that it has more iron in it (because babies' natural stores of iron begin to run out at around 6 months)
HOWEVER, there were quite a lot of threads on this ages ago and both mears and tiktok said that it's pointless. the iron in follow on milk isn't absorbed very well by babies and it can make them constipated.
as long as your baby is getting a varied solids diet then the extra iron shouldn't be needed in milk.
also, some follow-ons are cheaper than ordinary milk, but you may find when you use them that you have to use more scoops per bottle... so it works out just as expensive

hth!

Nik72 · 23/08/2005 11:44

Thanks Starlover! I'll just stick to the aptimil then, she seems to like it.

starlover · 23/08/2005 11:52

yeah i think it's best to stick with what they're used to. especially at a time when you're introducing all kinds of other things.
we had a right old time trying to find a formula that didn't make ds either sick or constipated so i am loathe to change it now!

Hazellnut · 23/08/2005 15:18

Thanks guys !! Just what I needed to hear and I guess we will have to get used to all sorts of tumbles as they learn to get more active ! Am sure dd has well forgotten about it now !

SL - we have tried those Mum4 yoghurts but dd didn't seem too keen on them. She loves the little Rachel Organic ones though which have no sugar in either so I tend to get those. Am trying to shovel loads down her as she's really not interested in her milk. Am hoping its just cos of the teeth action rather than a long term thing !

OP posts:
Hazellnut · 23/08/2005 15:19

We have also stuck to the first stage formula - we tried the follow on but dd was a bit sicky on it and also took less as apparently it sits heavier on their stomachs. My HV said there was no need to go on to them as Starlover said so we went back to the first one.

OP posts:
W0MBAT · 23/08/2005 20:33

I am in agreement about sticking to the first stage formula. Took me absolutely ages to find one that didn't make dd throw up constantly so not going to dare change her now.

Starlover - I am finding that doing the signing consistently is getting a reaction from dd. I am using the same signs as you (particularly focussing on 'mummy') and when she seems to have got used to those ones, I will add some more. Do you watch the signing programme on CBeebies? I went to a signing class, which was quite expensive, and wish I hadn't bothered as the programme is much better.

futurity · 23/08/2005 20:58

Hazellnut: When you say she isn't interested in her milk...how much milk does she have? I ask because I am moving across to formula from breastfeeding and wondering whether Sam is having enough formula as sometimes he woofs it from his beaker and sometimes he has a grump and won't have much more than 2oz before paddying!

So much stressy stuff making me tired at the moment with Sam that it is easy to forget the nice things so here is one..he rolled today for the first time from his back to his front..he looked well impressed!

Hazellnut · 23/08/2005 22:37

Futurity - I think at this age they should have about a pint which is 18 oz in a day. The last week she has often had less than this but was back to this level today so hope it is just the teeth. DD does that too - sometimes wants it all and sometimes takes only 2 oz. In fact, her bedtime bottle she only too 1 !! But then she'd had about 8 this afternoon, quite close to dinner which ended up being quite close to bedtime so guess she was just full !!

Good luck with the move to formula and congrats on the rolling !
