Sal, honestly, R sounds like every toddler to me! I don't know of a toddler his age that isn't tantrumming, and it's def frustration that he can't make himself understood. G isn't saying any phrases either, his words are coming on in that a few weeks ago he was only saying mummy and daddy off his own back, but was saying quite a few others when we said 'can you say' before the word. Now he says bus, car, mini, and a few others when he spots them. He really enjoys trying to repeat a sentence, with varying degrees of success. After each meal I say one word at a time 'thankyou for my breakfast/lunch/tea, can I get down please' and he repeats the ones he can and just random grunts and things for the ones he can't. He gets a 'clever boy, really good talking' after every time even if he's being cheeky and just says 'bus bus bus bus bus' after every word with a big grin! Just before he goes to bed we say 'night night, love you, sleep tight and sweet dreams, and see you in the morning' and he knows where 'you' and 'morning' comes and says them (although morning is more like mow-mee!)

He loves books too, and we just go through them and he points at everything and I have to name it. Sometimes I ask if he can say it too, and sometimes he has a really good go and sometimes he doesn't.

I also find a big help when he's getting cross that I don't understand his, is I say 'show mummy' and offer him my hand, and he'll often lead me to what he wants and point to it.

MisSalToeKisses · 16/12/2009 22:14

Knitter, thanks. I struggle with this sahm thing sometimes - not because I don't love it, I do, but because I often wonder if I do it right / good enough. I'm so used to my work where it's all measurable, and if you make a mistake, it's obvious and major - most definitely no doubt about whether or not it happened. And to progress, I just read up / study / work harder / cleverer etc. Now with R, I have to hope and pray I get it right, and all I've got to go on is him being happy. And if I do f... it up, I'll realise too late!

Thanks for listening to my rambling.

policyThe item will be replaced if faulty or problems occur within seven days of purchase. This does not include overloading or physical damage to the unit. the toy I mentioned

We all feellike that (well I do) about being a SAHM,Sal. It'snormal.

Also-with Bas saying three word phrases- remember our situatoion:wefocus on every singkle word, weare quitedesperate for his langauge to move on becuase we are watching out for signs he has the asd gene. We're far from average ion terms of how we push it. And you know, his language isn't far off where ds1 was- verbal age of 16 - 21 at 6, apaprently not unusual in Aspergers LOL, the moral of which is- You Will Always Worry!

here

MisSalToeKisses · 16/12/2009 23:27

Peachy, thank you. I really hope for your sake that Bas doesn't have the gene, but if he does, I honestly think that he couldn't have hoped for better parents to help him deal with it.

I really appreciate all the advice on how to help communication - I'm going to work hard on this, and will probably bug you for help again in the future.

Thanks for that link too, am ordering now. Oh, btw, I bought that book you recommended (Don't shoot the dog), and it's brilliant. Some of it obvious, but I just didn't think of it. Also quite useful even just in everyday situations.

SuperSoph73 · 17/12/2009 10:32

Morning all.

Sal - unfortunately our pooter at home is broken so I probably won't get to post on here after Friday. If I get to an internet cafe I shall say hello obviously TBH because I spend every working day in front of a computer it's quite nice to be away from them.

Try not to worry too much about your LO. Our DS1 hardly said anything up until he started school. He still struggles with his grammar because he speaks English like a Spaniard does (translating literally) but he never shuts up I do think that sometimes when children have two languages to cope with they can take a little longer to speak.

Hey Peachy nice to hear from you

MisSalToeKisses · 17/12/2009 11:01

Nooooooo Soph, I'll miss you!!! I'll grudgingly accept it, but very grudgingly...

"Good" to hear about ds1, I know I overreact sometimes, but I find it hard without parents nearby, and no-one (in my family) has really been in same situation. We only learned English once we went to school, and even there, only from about age 8.

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 17/12/2009 13:03

Sal if you ever think it is time toworry, look on here fopr a poster called moondog- a SLT specialising in Bi-Lingualism.

Soph- have a great Christmas! DH says he'll fix your PC if you pay for him to fly out [(Actually I think when we were out your way last he was cahsed by a meany camel LOL)

MisSalToeKisses · 17/12/2009 13:59

Ok, thanks Peachy. I'll search for her threads anyway just for some background info, but it's good to know she is around if needs be. Thanks.

Horrible weather outside, isn't it?! Just spoke to dh, who said it was snowing really hard in Central London. Here no snow at the moment, but freezing.

Scorps · 17/12/2009 14:00

It's clear blue skies here, but very cold outside.

Mimi doesn't say many words at all, really.

MisSalToeKisses · 17/12/2009 14:04

Scorps, I wish I had your Uggs today - my toes are freezing! Had a look at some links on Style & Beauty today, and am really tempted for some warm boots. I have however promised myself I'm not buying anything else, as I have no space and don't want to waste money... But it's so COLD!

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 17/12/2009 18:55

We had some really heavy sleet as I drove back home, but otherwise just v v v cold.

Baking gingerbread tonight for staff gifts for the school- with TA's / job shares etc we go to 8 just for the older two! They're laying offthree TA's as they've run out of cash (hmm, they get more than other schools because of their endow ed status (deliberate gap in case anyone searches for their school on Google , although there are a few sharing that part of the name) but it means we will ahve to get ds2 a dx now for his dyspraxia or DAMP or whatever it is, or he will lose his help. Drat! Could do without it tbh. The new Head who ahs taken over seems a bit od tbh- hides behind doors, doesn't evcen speak to aprents who volunteer (well never has me and I read weekly),and does Church twice a week. Bas probably isn't going there, fortunately ds2 will be 10 soold enough to get there himself (only a 3 minute walk across crossings) and ds3 is picked up by taxi so i will able to drive Bas up the hill to the next school along. I know it seems early but in Waleswe get a free Nursery place at the school from the September after they turn 3 and it all has to be applied for.

SuperSoph73 · 18/12/2009 11:57

Aaahh Sal, how sweet, I'll miss you too The poster Moondog is brilliant by the way, she was the one who put me straight about downs syndrome & bilingualism & got me all fired up to stick to my guns when the Dr over here told me we'd need to pick a language for Sam

Peachy - as much as I would love to meet other MNers and their families our funds don't stretch to paying for their flights unfortunately However, I have got my numbers on for the Euro Lottery tonight so you never know - keep your fingers crossed

Anyway I better just have a quick check to make sure that everything's up-to-date here before 3.30pm. I'll be back to say bye a bit later xxxxxxx

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 18/12/2009 12:14

Have a good christmas Soph. See you back here in the New Year.

SuperSoph73 · 18/12/2009 14:26

Well it's nearly time for the last assembly so I shall love you and leave you for now Keep strong Scorps and enjoy that wonderful new baby

Hope you all have fabulous Christmas's and Happy New Years. Hopefully for some of us it will mean a fresh start and the beginning of great things to come.

Love you all,
Soph xxxxxx

MisSalToeKisses · 21/12/2009 10:29

Good morning to all. No news here really, just wanted to get this thread back to top!

So come on lovelies, how are you all? What are you up to? Ellieeeeee, now that you've got your flashy new house, you're not too good for us, are you???!!!

Dh have to fly to Dublin tonight (back tomorrow) - wish he didn't, as I just KNOW he's going to get stuck there with this weather! Sulk in advance.

LadyBee · 22/12/2009 21:47

Evening ladies, it looks like everyone is getting very busy with Christmas prep! I've just finished work for the week thank goodness and am looking forward to a bit of scurrying about getting the last bits and pieces sorted out - cheeses and a gift for my CM.
We're having duck for Christmas dinner, and am doing a ham on Christmas eve to have for sandwiches although I seem to have miscalculated and have bought the tiniest ham I've ever seen.
Have just finished reading a good book - not my normal thing but it was interesting, called 'October Sky', about some young boys growing up in a mining town in West Virginia at the time of Sputnik and the beginning of the space race. They decide to learn about rockets by building them themselves. That's the basic story but it's about family, growing up, education and discovering a passion. I think partly I liked it because I've been doing quite a bit of thinking about missing that feeling of being hugely 'into' something beyond me or my family - and feel like I'm searching for that something again. I think I've been cruising for a bit too long and need to be stretched.

Ah...sorry for the ramble. Hope you're all well - Scorpio, you're in my thoughts a lot.

MisSalToeKisses · 23/12/2009 10:09

Morning all, and hello again Ladybee. With this thread being so quiet, I completely missed your post yesterday.

October Sky does indeed sound very thought provoking, and very suited to this time of the year. It's a difficult one though - finding the balance between what challenges you as you, and the practicality of day-to-day work/home/family life.

Weirdly, I'm almost doing the opposite this year - I'm letting go a bit, and it's good. I find myself enjoying silly things, feeling oddly productive after 30 mins chasing R through the park, etc. For me, I think I need to add something creative for me. I used to love writing poems, but haven't done so for a couple of years. I think I need no-computer days where I can just "be" again, as I've fallen into a really bad habit of constant laptop use lately.

MisSalToeKisses · 24/12/2009 13:33

Merry Christmas to all you wonderful ladies. My life has been so much richer for having you all to share the ups and downs, laughs and tears. xxx

VeeEsss · 25/12/2009 09:25

Hi all, hope your lives are treating you well.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas

MisSalToeKisses · 28/12/2009 21:07

'Lo everybody. Not much going on here - basically eating too much and lounging around with the boys, as dh on leave this week.

Just marking my space so that I don't lose our thread again. Hope everyone is good and having a great Christmas and New Years' time.

LadyBee · 29/12/2009 21:06

Just sneaking on before Day of the Triffids...I have had the best news!!!! Great friend who has had much trouble with pg/mc etc etc announced at lunch that she is firmly up the duff, past the 1st 12 weeks of hell and all is looking good. I'm completely thrilled for her after so much bad luck. We're all still feeling a bit nervous for her so if you believe in such things and feel like including a stranger in your prayers, please think of her.
