Hmm, just read up on the official description of straight-edgers - not really me - a bit too extreme, but does describe a lot of the friends from the early 90s that I used to go 'festivalling' with. Apparently they were keen on using X as a sign of their allegiance to the cause, never came across it myself though.

The term 'Straight-Edge' came out of a 'Minor Threat' lyric in the 80's - Minor Threat later went on to become Fugazi.

moosemama · 01/09/2009 21:57

Dog you can pick up a Type 4 for under £4k. Alternatively you would be able to get a decent Type 25 for that price, especially down your way.

newspaperdelivery · 01/09/2009 22:05

Too extreme for me too. I remember one bloody gorgeous skater who was celibate. Crying shame.

Fugazi!! old times sake

I have the 12 inch somewhere

In the 80's/early 90's there was a straight edge thing going on. Where people declared themselves 'straight' - so no drugs, alcohol, sex in some cases, erm....I never got past that really! It was mainly your skater/punk type I think.

Moose will know more. She's the cool kid around here.

Ones I knew had a hand sign and wore a label and all sorts. Think they all fell off the wagon in fine style and woke up one day with kids and a massive wine rack like the rest of us

You know I still know a lot of straight edge folk, they were still going strong when I went to uni in late 90s, and are still around now. Many of the bands associated with the straight edge scene were the beginnings of the post-hardcore genre that later became emo and inspired acts like Fall Out Boy. Some of the post-hardcore lot are still about. But yes, their children are generally called cosmos eceterata.

I've seen Peach lately Dog, don't worry she is here even if she's not posted. As am I.

Stripey Hangovers Lucky ladies! I want one! Well, I want the night before anyway.

Tree You've inspired me to book a holiday. I heart you. Sod the car, worry about it later. Enjoy the sun. Solfest sounds fab, off to look at your pics in a mo.

Well GPs was rubbish. Got there and locum on as my GP called away for family reasons (her father been very ill lately so expect was related). I have a really good relationship with my GP, she is lovely and very very good. So I arrived on time and agreed to see locum instead, then DS needed feeding and waiting room was elbow to elbow so told receptionist I was going to sit on bench outside to bf DS and could they call me as I wouldn't see the leccy thingimy board. Well they obviously forgot and I was still sat in the waiting room an hour after my appointment by which time locum had gone for lunch. In the end I got to see practice nurse who didn't do anything just told me I needed to see GP. Er, yeah I know that. So I went back to reception and by this point was very very fed up and now have an appointment for next week since my GP is prob not going to be in until Fri when I'm visiting rellies. Total waste of time.

Off now... oh no.. Sorry to miss replying to you Pat - schools can be so political can't they. Real pain about your room, what a PITA. And not on about cutting your hours. Can see nursery situation being stressful, give it time though and you'll be used to the routine. Hope tomorrow better.

Gumps 1 day down... will be thinking of you at 11am tomorrow

stripeyloathestheDM · 01/09/2009 23:13

off to bed now, but just wanted to say about docs, lenni. also, after nearly two years of mineral water (more or less), it's dead easy to get a hangover...

thanks for kind words re teething nightmare - it's her top two, the bottom ones didn't cause half this much grief. but they were clearly so painful today, they must be about to erupt. poor tiny girl

newspaperdelivery · 01/09/2009 23:25

That sucks lenni - about the GP. Is it your hands? Respect to the hardcore straight edgers. Takes some self control. Especially at Solfest where apparently the cider brewed for the event is mega strong and mega yummy and mega cheap. Glorious combo. Go forth and book holiday - we fly Leeds to Nice for £90 each, with a mobile home for £300. Caravan on Cote D'Azur, it aint the Ritz but it is the Riviera!

Stripey - so true. I had one pint on Sun and felt thick headed on Mon! Poor baby, I'm sure you are already doing it - but those teetha sachets......they rock.

I didn't reply to you either Pat - sorry! I hope work settles down and feels more like home soon. Going back is Hard isn't it. I remember it well.

missjackson · 02/09/2009 10:52

Lenni your doctor experience sounds soooooo annoying, I was gritting my teeth while reading on your behalf.

Pat loved your good bits/ bad bits summary of the day - all in all doesn't sound bad for a first day? Great news that DS took 2 naps - he must feel relaxed there to do that. And lovely that you have DD there to keep an eye on him. I am sure they will both settle down and do great. How many days a week are you doing at school? Can't remember if you were full time already.

hkz and qumps and others back at work today - hope it goes well.

tree yey for holiday. Must start thinking about ours too - the busy weeks stop at the beginning of October, so it would be good to go then. Will have to organise passports etc though.

dog hope the kittens are settling in well - cute! And hope you found some good what-to-wear suggestions on your other thread.

stripey teething this time around sounds very painful for poor little C - what a shame they can't invent better painkillers for babies. Ouch for the hangover though!

N is at very frustrating stage - he is basically not happy sitting up playing anymore, and always wants to be off 'on the crawl' but keeps getting stuck, usually on top of one of his bricks, so I am always having to rescue him. He also seems to have got bored of the jumperoo. So what's the next great entertainment? What are your LOs loving?

moosemama · 02/09/2009 11:04

News its dh that's the cool one, not me. I was there, but he and his friends were the students and I was working to support him through uni, so never really got chance to involve myself in a 'scene' so-to-speak. Dh is into music/ethics/politics etc in a big way and knows far more about it all than I do. Most of the straight-edgers I knew ended up spiralling into depression when they found out they couldn't change the world, (by that read when they left uni and had to get jobs ) then they either got jobs, got married and fell in line with the rest of the world, or in the case of a very unfortunate few, became cider punks and/or crusties and lived the rest of their lives on the dole.

Lenni sorry docs were so crap. Mine are useless too if its any consolation, which obviously it isn't. I was told to rush out and have a repeat set of bloods done then book an appointment to see one of the docs as soon as the result come through, unfortunately the receptionist didn't agree with the doc that test results were important and I wasn't able to get an appointment until next Monday evening despite my tests being done last Wednesday. in the meantime I'm in increasing pain, the pills I'm on are causing major insomnia and from what I've read could also be at the root of the liver problem.

bodenaddict · 02/09/2009 11:15

miss j - bracken loves her leapfropg learn and groove activity station she is trying to move to and keeps getting stuck

moosemama · 02/09/2009 11:25

MissJ I have heard good things about this crawling ball although we haven't got one. Both my boys loved this walker. Dd is loving the Ikea wire bead frame thing but I can't find it on their website so not sure if they still do it. Its a bit like this or this one.

She also loves her skwish at the moment, but hers has bells in it so it makes a noise as well. She has also taken a liking to the boys old vtech singing/talking/flashing telephone, although she isn't used to electronic stuff and she cried the first time it flashed and made a noise!

The absolute best thing I've bought her (only bought her two toys actually, she's inherited the rest) is a set of stacking/nesting cups for £1.00 from Ikea. She loves them and plays with them in the bath, on her playmat, in the swing and in her high chair. She even took them on the beach with her.

moosemama · 02/09/2009 11:31

Gah - just opened a letter from my GP.

They didn't take enough blood for all the tests at the phlebotomists last week so I have to go back again (3rd time!) to have more taken. Its such a pain, as I have to arrange for mum to put me and the kids in the car, drive me to the hospital, drop me off then play eye-spy in the car with the boys until I'm finished.

I had a feeling they didn't take enough, but the phlebotomists were all so busy chatting with each other, she barely looked at me let alone concentrated on what she was doing.

Boden dd has been trying to get going over the past couple of days as well. She is getting right up on her hands and lifting herself up and is almost getting her knees under her, but not quite. She gets so frustrated when she doesn't get anywhere though and goes back to a combination of commando crawling, wriggling, rolling and yelling at her brothers to fetch things in order to get what she wants.

Odd really as she got onto her hands and knees and rocked twice ages ago but then never tried again. Must've been flukes I guess.

missjackson · 02/09/2009 12:49

Thanks for those links MM - will def get one of those balls, they look like fun.

Was contemplating trying to spend the whole day at home (have you got out since last Thurs MM??!!) but at 12.50am it's already too much for me! We just had lunch, proper BLW style, so cleaning that up is going to take the next 20 minutes... then think I will head into town to buy the crawling ball..

Missing work today, envious of you lot back there having adult conversations and cups of tea .

bodenaddict · 02/09/2009 14:08

mm - we have skwish 2 is great isnt it

VeryHungryLennipillar · 02/09/2009 14:41

Me too MissJ. I would love to go back in January, well that was the plan, I had been applying for things. But now DH is likely to be away more after a few things have changed with his work and it looks like I'm stuck at home a while longer. Either that or childcare full time 8-5 which isn't an option for me, I just couldn't do it. Part time would be lovely but not happening, nothing around. Am hoping my sister moves, wishful thinking though.

moosemama · 02/09/2009 15:15

No MissJ still stuck in the house with quarantined kids. They are almost better really though, symptomless now, just tired and look like they haven't slept in a month - good look for going back to school. Plus ds2 gave himself a black eye falling off the computer chair onto the train set box the day before yesterday so the school will probably take one look at them on Monday and call social services!

Will be getting out of the house tomorrow, but only for yet more blood tests.

Boden we still have the skwish that was bought for ds1 when he was born, so seven and a half years old now and still as loved as ever.

bodenaddict · 02/09/2009 17:55

hi mm -

must be a pain stuck in !! glad they are getting better. i bought skwish from nct sale for £2

good luck with blood tests

Gumps · 02/09/2009 19:31

I have done one of those mental things. We stayed in all day due to visitors and rubbish weather and while my sis was here I decided to rearrange the playroom. Now have furniture and toys everywhere and it will take me about 2 hours to set it right. Also moved all dh mba books upstairs which he will not be pleased about when he gets home. Hey ho.

Moose poor you still being stuck in. When do the dcs go back to school? We borrowed a skwish for a while and s loved it. Puppy calling also a favourite here but the song drives me mental. Boo to more blood tests, they failed to take enough blood with s and I was so mad.
Pat was today a better day at work? Did you have kids in? You are much quieter so must be busy
Lenni you sound suprisingly calm about the docs, I think I would have kicked off. What a waste of a morning. Mind you ds1 loves the docs for the toys, well did pre swine flu as they have removed them all now.
Socerette yay to barn. Hope it all works out for you and the move is not too painful. Have you got someone to watch Esme for a while?
Stripey s is really struggling with cutting the top teeth too. I can see it making is way down but think its going to be a bit more pain for both of us for a while yet.
MissJ S loves chasing push down and go cars. He also likes it when I build towers for him to knock down. That and a box full of random things for him to empty and play with, eg. empty loo roll, wooden spoon, keys. I had forgotten how much they like emptying things.

heron22 · 02/09/2009 19:57

hi all, just had a quick scan of all the posts. hope ur all well!
raining cats and dogs here.

moose all the best of the blood tests tomorrow. more blood taken! what a hassle. i hate getting blood taken.

heron22 · 02/09/2009 20:00

stripey teething? wow, my LO dribbles like a basketball player. but nothing coming out!
crawling? nah, he is too happy sitting on his bottom

newspaperdelivery · 02/09/2009 20:30

Oh Lenni - pants!!

Moose - more pants!

It's so annoying isn't it? Getting all that stuff done and ohysically being able to attend is such a drag.

Yay to teeth but boo to teething - hope all the bubbas feel better soon. No sign here

Have had a rare old day with H, she has cried all the time. But really screamed when put down. Am knackered! Maybe its after the weekend and being carried all the time, maybe she has tummy ache as she should be doing a poo soon. Poor lamb.

Got back ache and have had a stressful busy day. I'd like my bed and a take away. Together if poss. But also went to a indoor play area and met a playschool friend and went to see another at their house - so that was lovely. I'm liking the contact with people!

Good luck Gumps! I think my last mission in the playroom took 3 hours. Still looked a tip and the order lasted one play. The pipecleaners are in where the glitter should be and the Barbie is mixed up with the Thomas railway. CHaos reigns supreme.

Need to pack really and tidy up, hoover etc but so tired and achey. Lightweight!

stripeyloathestheDM · 02/09/2009 20:37

gumps, hate the way those organisational urges always fizzle out just about when you've got everything pulled out into piles on the floor.... we've had another day of intermittent mouth clutching here, bloody things don't seem to have made any progress, so i feel for you and poor s. and eveybody else with howling, drooling, sore bummed babas...

moose about bloods: not only inconvenient but more needles. i'd be fuming.

missj, hope your escape to town for baby toy shopping was enjoyable. i got out to the gym for an hour today, but got absolutely drenched on my cycle home - weather foul here today. startede day with chimney sweep - winter evenings in front of fire coming soon, i feel...
