BabyD - I'm not sure, but Niklas is about the same as Dylan at the moment and we keep thinking he is teething. We have teething gel which seems to calm him down for a while, but maybe there is just something calming in the gel anyway.

Jambot - I was just reading that a baby rubbing their ear can either be sign of infection or of teething. Be careful if it is an infection. Have you moved back into your house yet? How is it going?

Midee - Niklas already chomps down quite hard on my nipples - dreading when his teeth do come throuhg!

jambot · 26/06/2005 18:20

We are finally back in our own home - well the bedroom end anyway. Lauren finally has her own room and slept in her cot for the first time last night. She was great and slept from 6:45 to after 7:00. Didn't hear a peep. So nice to be able to get into bed with the light on and do a bit of reading which I have really missed, without waking her. I'm an avid reader who used to read 3-4 books a week. Have just finished my second in a four month period!
Tried her again with the rice cereal this morning. The expression on her face when I managed to get some into her mouth was priceless! She didn't know what to make of this stuff and spat most of it out, but some stayed down. Tasted some myself - not as bad as it looks.
She is still a little niggly - but it's low key - enough to effect her mood but not enough to send her into a spin. Might be teething although the midwife checked her gums on Friday and couldn't feel any sign of teeth about to erupt. Although I understand that the signs of teething can go on for some time before the teeth actually break through??
We are going to DH's brother's birthday on Tuesday and will be dropping Lauren off at my mum's. She will put her to bed and then we'll fetch her later. Am not looking forward to it as I'm worried she'll wake up and that will be the end of it. Don't know why I'm so worried as she's a good sleeper, but I don't want to disturb her sleep. Do you know if you can get car straps for a carry cot? It would be less disruptive if we didn't have to get out of her bed and put her in her car seat to go home, although it is literally a 2 minute drive away. Just don't feel happy taking a chance, because that's when things are bound to happen. We would never forgive ourselves if we were in an accident and she wasn't properly secured in the car.

shalaa · 26/06/2005 19:49

Caleb had 'sunny banana' cereal today! He seemed to like it and tries to grab the spoon from me. He is now enjoying being on his front, he gets his legs under and sticks his bum in the air.

Can't believe how fast our babies are growing, soon we'll all be sharing crawling stories!

misdee · 26/06/2005 19:54

i cant belive you lot are weaning already. i just cant be bothered lol. serena is doing well on breastmilk only, and tbh i dont want to upset the balence.

think her top teeth will pop through soon, her gums feel harder. she is currently lying on the floor next to me blowing bubbles

Misdee - I guess us first time mums are more excited about weaning and seeing how our babies take to real food! Dh can't wait! I think he has felt a bit left out with the feeding! i don't think Niklas needs anything extra yet though. Every small thing new thing is really exciting and a suprise!
How are the driving lessons going?

Jambot - I know what you mean about reading, but I always try to read something for 15 mins before I go to sleep. Don't worry about moving Lauren from bed to car to bed. Its only once in a while and if she does wake up and you have a bad night it is one bad night and many good ones and worth it for you to be able to go out. If you want to go out this won't be the only time. I would definitely not take any risks with her in the car - better to wake her than risk her safety.

I think Niklas is a really affectionate baby. he puts his arms round our knecks when we cuddle him, loves holding our fingers (he has this contented look on his face) and loves it when I kiss him! He grabs my hair and (I am sure) tries to kiss me back !

misdee · 26/06/2005 21:25

i wasnt judging, i remember wanting dd1 to take solids sooo uch. with dd2 i wasnt too fussed, now with dd3 it so much easie rto keep her just on breastmilk. bit like the bathing as well lol. with all the running about i do its the easiest thing for us.

driving lessons are going ok, waiting for instructor to text back to saywhat timne it is tomorrow.

I guess you just get more laid back after the first baby. Met a girl the other day who has a baby born on the same day as Niklas (her second baby) - she was surprised that I could remember the exact time he was born, weight, length, head size etc.... I was surprised that she couldn't remember everything about her baby exactly!

misdee · 26/06/2005 21:44

i cant about any of them. wasnt watching the clokc, was just so entranced by meeting all of them.

Leogaela · 26/06/2005 22:04

Yep, amazing feeling, it would be nice to go back and relive some of the really special moments!
I looked at the details carefully afterwards (i did spend a week in hopsital so I guess i had time!). My mum has a problem remembering my birthday and i am determined not to be like her so maybe i am a bit extreme! Still think of him as a March baby and not a February baby though!

misdee · 27/06/2005 10:15

same here. even tho she was born on 21st feb.

Hi all,

I am bathing dd2 every day as we do dd1 anyway so it makes sense they go in together - when I go back to work dh is going to have to get them both to bed so simultaneous bathing will help. Besides, i've always used it as a 'it's bedtime' trigger and I get so i daren't miss!! Re weaning, nope not close here either. I weaned dd1 at 17 weeks but she got excema almost immediately and I felt guilty so I'll wait this time. I may not wait until fully 6 months though as I'd like to have at least started by the time i start work in beginning of October. Don't know yet. I'm certainly in no rush (was with dd1 though I remember ).

Breastfeeding has been harder going again recently - the heat was making her wake more at night and feed more and I have cracked nipples again . I think her latch must have gotten lazy but I can't work out what's wrong. I may only feed until 6 months now as I'm beginning to get a bit fed up of it all. She'll have to have a formula last thing anyway so it may be less confusing if I just stop around then - I've never imagined myself feeding a toddler so I'd be stopping sometime this year anyway. The hardest thing will be telling my friend - she's an ardent extended breastfeeder/attachment parent/co-sleeper and wouldn't understand I don't think.

Last night was a lot better, though - fed 7, 11, 4 then 8, so as I wasn't in bed until after 11 anyway that's like only having one night feed .

Interesting thought about remembering the birth - I'm pretty hazy about dd1's as I was high as a kite on the spinal block and gas and air, but dd2's I remember it all really well which is great.

Hugs to all the babies, and hope the naughty toddlers let up and give you a break

jambot · 28/06/2005 17:58

We are going very slowly on the rice cereal business. It's more playing and experimenting with it at the moment, as not much actually goes in the mouth. As soon as she takes a spoonful her fingers go straight in after to explore this new goo!
She woke up with a runny nose and eyes this morning so think she has caught a cold from me. Just put her down and am using the vapouriser I bought for the first time. I've put some 'Bunged up Bertie' aromatherapy oil in it as well. Hope it makes her breathe better tonight. This oil comes from a great range of aromatherapy oil products for children. Also use ' Sleepy time Sam' in the bath. Cute names.
Although tonight may be different due to the fact that she's not feeling well, I am happy to announce that since she moved into her own room three nights ago, I have not heard a peep out of her all night. She is sleeping 12 and a half hours a night on average. I actually have to wake her in the morning or our routine of getting going for the day at 7am would be totally out of kilter.
Also - when is the best time to give solids? It's a problem if you give say half-way between milk feeds, as that's when they are ready for their nap. Don't want to do it too close to a milk feed as am worried it'll spoil her appetite for her bottle.! Does it really matter?

bonym · 28/06/2005 21:13

Hi everyone,

Sorry some of you are having toddler problems and sorry to hear about the feeding problems Zoe.

Haven't even thought about weaning yet but then Grace is one of the youngest here. When dd1 was a baby the recommendation was to wean at 4 months which is what we did, and touch wood she has had no problems up to now (age 7). My plan is to try to stick to the current recommendation of 6 months but will play it by ear as she may of course be ready for it before then.

Baths - was bathing her every night but now only 2-3 times a week (with dd1) as her skin was getting very dry and flaky (even without using any products). It's been a lot better since we cut the baths down. We just top and tail her on the other nights.

She has conjunctivitis at the moment - GP confirmed today that she has a blocked tear duct and that this has caused the eye to become infected. He has prescribed drops but trying to get them in is not exactly easy!

I am on the verge of trying cloth nappies but as she is near the top of the weight range for the smallest sizes I think I may wait until the next size up will fit. Although, I did read an article in this month's Junior that said latest research states that the environmental impact is largely similar for cloth and disposable (because of the energy used in producing them and washing/drying them, and detergent used. So I don't feel quite so guilty for using disposables atm.

Nights are very erratic recently - Thursday she went down at 7.15pm and woke at 7am so I we were thrilled . Friday she went to bed similar time but woke at 1am - I gave her her dummy and she went back to sleep then woke at 4am and wanted to be fed. Saturday, woke at 4am again for a feed. Sunday, slept through until 6.30am, then last night she woke when we went to bed at 11pm and wouldn't go back to sleep until she'd been fed, but then slept through until 6.30 again. So what she'll do tonight is anyone's guess!

Sorry - this has turned into a long (and probably boring )post. Hope everyone is doing ok.

bonym · 28/06/2005 21:15
