Hello everyone,

I hope we are all well, I have not been in for a few days.

Kieran is the youngest in here yet seems to be the heaviest. He was weighed yesterday and the midwife said that his weight gain had dropped and should take him in again in two weeks to be weighed.

I am not worried as he has actualy gained weight just not as fast as usual, dropped from just above the 99.6th centile to about the 95th centile. Maybe because of the cold.

Leogaela · 22/06/2005 10:46

....sorry, looks like a long one again, I just can't stop getting carried away with writing !!!

Misdee - I think you've lost a week. Serena is 2 days older than Niklas and I counted the weeks several times !

Shalaa - its great to be able to swim outside, but the water is too cold to take Niklas in above his knees, its not so much fun if I don't have someone to go with! But I am spoilt, I get to go with people and swim plenty of times!
It sounds really cute feeding Caleb the baby rice! I'm really excited about starting Niklas on solids! He's definitely not ready yet though so have to be patient (not my stregth!)!

Cristina - DID YOU PASS?

ZoeC - no comments on mixed feeding, but I guess a couple of the others are managing it really well. Could it be the heat that Rebecca is getting thirsty at night because of the heat? Niklas has been waking more (or not sleeping at all the last few nights and i think that's the reason.

Bonym - hope the wisdom tooth is getting better. There is only one solution to that problem - have it taken out. I was miserable with mine for about 2 years before I plucked up the courage to go to the dentist and get it done. Was so much happier once i was rid of them.

Jambot - Niklas will take ebm (formula, tea or water) from any bottle when he want to, I think the best one I have though is an NUK bottle, it has a fairly flat round bit at the base of the teat, its supposed to be more like a real breast shape than other bottles. I think the thing is to persevere, make sure the baby is hungry enough but not distressed when fed with a bottle - advice from someone who has had little success however !

I took Niklas to the doctor, she said it is just a virus, no bacterial infection which is good . She recommended feeding him some cammomile tea, which he guzzled down very thirstily. He is a bit up and down (mood and temperature) but I think its probably more the heat than anything else. He is feeding very often but for short periods again and is often fussing when feeding. I am worried about him getting dehydrated so was happy the doc recommended some cammomile tea for him.

Keep meaning to mention that he loves his tummy time, but gets frustrated - i think he wants to move forward and be able to grab stuff while he is on his tummy. He also wants to sit up on our knees all the time and loves bouncing on his legs but the doctor said no sitting him up until he is 6 months old (unless gets himself into sitting position) he gets so frustrated being down on the floor all the time.

Have also looked at the new pics put up! Lovely!!! Nice to see the faces of some of the mums as well. We haven't taken any good ones recently, but if Niklas stays alseep long enough now i'll put some more up.

Rebecca - 13 weeks 5 days, between 14.5 and 15lb (zoec)

Leogaela - you're probably right about the waking. Are you mixed feeding? You mentioned Niklas taking formula in the nuk bottles, or is it just occasional? I may get some of them in - do the teats fit other bottles or do you get special nuk bottles too? I could only see the teats in boots. Hope he feels better soon, by the way.

Boneym - ouch for the tooth - might be an idea to get it removed. Mine haven't come through but I've got a corner poking up now so am thinking if it starts being a problem I'll have it taken out.

Last night was actually a bit better, she fed at 7, 9.50, 3.45, 6.45 (dh woke her getting up) and then I had to wake her at 8.45 . So somewhere in there I got a gap of almost 6 hours (technically sleeping through) so we'll carry on as we are I think. Feeds are so easy in the night - 10/15 mins and she's back asleep - she doesn't fully wake as I don't have to heat a bottle up.

Still really hot today, but dd1 is in playgroup and dd2 is in the cot having a nap so I'm actually child free for a rare moment!

Norash - weighing babies is seriously overrated and a slow down in weight gain is nothing to be worried about - I think your hv is overreacting a bit getting him re-checked. Sounds like he's not exactly wasting away . I don't take dd2 to weigh clinic - don't want to get obsessed by weight this time round as long as she seems healthy and alert.

Popsy (hug) nothing I can say to make leaving Harry easier but you know he will be fine, so concentrate on yourself. You'll probably be more upset than he will, but it will get better.

norash · 22/06/2005 11:21

Oh by the way I took Kieran to the pool the other day. After the initial shock, he was 'LOVIN' IT'

tamula · 22/06/2005 13:17

I forgot to mention about our trip to the doctor for Ava's first round of jabs on Monday. Dp took the morning off to support us both!

We arrived at 9:15 for our 9:30am appointment told to wait our turn, nothing unusual there. So at 10:00 when Ava started getting bored I politely asked them how much longer they would be as I did specifically ask for the first appointment of the day, so what could possibly be the delay?!!

Only that my appointment had been cancelled but nobody bothered to tell me, not a phone call, no-one checked when I arrived, had it not been for me asking I dont doubt that I would have been there all day. The next available appointment for Ava's 8 week jabs will be when she is 13 weeks. I'm still livid.

So I have now changed doctors but they cannot fully register me until 31st of July So 13 weeks for her first jabs it is and 31st I join new doctors... Grrrr.

Leogaela, I was browsing all our pics yesterday. Is that park in your photo your local park? If only I had mountains as the backdrop to my local park Nothing but concrete here!

Hey Tamula,

I feel your frustration with the doctors, I cannot believe that the behave like this with little ones

Where do you live in London?

bonym · 22/06/2005 18:45

Tam - how annoying! I took Grace for her 2nd lot of jabs today. DH turned up to support me but I had already gone in when he arrived (didn't know he was coming) and the bloody receptionist refused to tell him if I was even there! Patient confidentiality apparently but he had to spend 5 mins arguing with her before she rang the nurse to ask if it was ok for him to come in! By that time it was all over . Poor Grace has been unhappy for the last couple of hours so I have given her some Calpol. She was fine after the first lot (apart from initial crying) so I wasn't expecting her to be grouchy this time.

Tooth is much better - antibiotics starting to take effect!

Oh - and Grace has put on 7oz since last week - now 12lbs 7oz.

shalaa · 22/06/2005 19:57

Leogaela, Glad Nickolas is on the mend, Calebs a bit grumpy with the heat. We give him a little bit of baby rice each day now and he's enjoying it! Still breastfeeding as and when he wants, which is every 2 hrs with the heat.

Hi, I'm just too busy this week - I really don't have time to be on here, but just wanted to say hello and I hope you are all well.

Bye for now

Leogaela · 24/06/2005 22:08

ZoeC - I am not mixed feeding, Niklas has taken the occassional bottle of formula and expressed milk, I didn't want him to be used to it for when I go back to work, but it takes persistence and patience - I lack patience! He also sometimes has cammomile tea (as recommended by the doctor) and we have found the NUK bottle the most successful, he likes it and tries to hold the bottle himself, the avent bottles just seemed to choke him. The NUK one is a 150ml bottle with an 'air system', the teats don't fit any other bottles. I got this one in Austria though, not sure whats available in the UK. I've seen other people on MNet recommend Tommy Tiptee bottles (or something), perhaps someone else knows.

Tamula - I am really shocked with your doctor! That's really bad. I guess some of the others here have had problems with waiting to see doctors as well. I'm very lucky wiht our doctor here. We see a childrens specialist which is also a better system.
And the picture I put up is about 3 hours away, but dh's parents have a holiday apartment there and I can get to the mountains from Zurich in about an hour. I am very spoilt , but I love it here !

Niklas has been really hard work while he's not been well, I've spent a lot of time comforting him and we've had real problems getting him to sleep in his bed and during the day I've had to carry him around constantly. Its exhausting! Last night was the end of it, we let him cry himself to sleep (well I went to bed and dh looked after him), refused ot pick him up but went int to see him every few minutes. He slept very well ! This morning I did the same thing so I could shower, dress and drink something. He was much better after a while and played quite happily after he had screamed for a while! And was an absolute pleasure for the rest of the day! :! No problems to put him to bed tonight !

Hope everyone else is doing well!

misdee · 24/06/2005 22:13

serena is now 12lb 11oz. she has 2 very sharp teeth, and she has started rolling properly. i woke up this morning to her crying as she hasd rolled onto her tummy and was stuck.

Leogaela · 25/06/2005 11:28

Misdee - does Serena bite you at all when she's feeding?

misdee · 25/06/2005 12:41

Dylan is now 16 weeks and weighs 15lb 1oz.
I think he may be teething as lots of dribbling, fingers in mouth all the time and for the last few days has been really clingy and grouchy. What do you guys think?

jambot · 25/06/2005 18:16

Tried Lauren with her first rice cereal this morning. Wasn't very successful. She has been a bit off for the last few days. Suddenly crying in a high pitch when she is normally so sunny and happy. She is also batting her right ear with her hand. Wonder if it's a mild ear ache. She is sleeping ok so can't be too bad. Giving her the odd dose of Calpol which seems to fix whatever is hurting her but don't want to mask the problem for too long. So didn't try very hard with the cereal as I feel her first food experience should be a positive one. It's not vital for her to start straight away but she is up to the max on her formula and is sometimes looking for more. She is the height and weight of a five and a half month old, so I can't go according to the recommendations for her age.
