For those of you with differing advise about tears/episiotomies, the NHS midwife advised baths in clear water (she said people sometimes put salt or lavender oil in but it doesn't affect the time it takes to heal).

MY IM recommends a week of bed rest, doing as little walking as possible and avoiding stairs - this is so that the skin isn't moving about and so gets chance to fuse together quicker. Have to say it worked for me (healed in a week this time, last time took 10 weeks for similar tearing).

She also recommends hypercal cream - you put it onto your maternity pad so you don't need to rub it in iyswim. Also calendula oil can be added to water in a spray bottle and sprayed on to soothe it all.

My tip is witch hazel on a maternity pad.

craftynclothy · 27/08/2009 14:05

Oh and quixotic - definitely nowhere near 250g for a clean dry nappy. I know this because I have to weigh the cloth ones I sell so the store works out postage correctly.

sheenaisapunkrocker · 27/08/2009 16:27

Hi everyone, isn't there a lot of confusing information out there - I think I have a handle on something and then I find a contradiction!

Well, Wilson will be 3 weeks old this weekend. We are managing to bf quite well which is due to the excellent help I had as a result of ending up in hospital for the birth (I had planned a homebirth). Just before we were discharged, one of the midwives noticed that Wilson had a tongue-tie. We were seen by an ENT consulatnt who recommended monitoring, so a bf counsellor (wonderful woman) got involved. Good job she did as Wilson was not feeding effectively - lots of feeds, not much milk or rest.

After a week of this, with excruciating nipple pain (he has an almighty suck - probably compensating for the lack of tongue action!) and a 12% loss of birth weight, Wilson finally had his tongue-tie clipped.

Since then we have had more success. I am feeding about 10-12 times per 24 hours and in the last couple of days we have had some 3 hour stretches between feeds (with cluster feeding either side) and the occasional 4 hour stretch (hooray!)

Fingers crossed that this will continue...

It's taking me ages to recover from the long birth - not sure what I expected, but I guess the broken sleep contributes to the length of time it takes. So, we are taking it easy, feeding and resting.

Hope you are all doing ok xx

josiejo79 · 27/08/2009 16:45

Longtalljosie - hi had an episiotomy too and have been told lots of different things. I was told to use salt in the water by one MF and then another said don't use salt as it can shrink the stitches. Use Lavender oil with a little bit of milk to help it disperse through the water is what another MF told me. Also told not to use any soap etc at all.

My DS has lost 6lbs between birth and now but he fed terribly for the first three days as just wouldn't latch and in the end i started using nipple protectors. Strangley the MW's have all been really supportive about using them and said the most important thing is that he is getting BF.

ScummyMummy · 28/08/2009 10:27

lol at all these midwives with their differing advice. Bet we will all heal well in a couple of weeks whatever we do.

LTJ- don't worry, they ALL lose a bit after birth, pretty much. The midwife told us that Marianne had regained her birthweight just before she discharged us but then we had the health visitor call round yesterday with a more sensitive set of scales and she's still a couple of oz off, in fact. I'm trying to encourage her to feed a bit longer but she tends ro go all warm and comforted and sleepy after a few minutes at the breast. Yickling her feet isn't really working- she just looks momentarily imperiously cross before falling asleep again! She looks fine and thriving though so I'm not massively concerned as yet.

Thanks everyone. I'm delighted to say that after being told my original advice on bf-ing needed changing (originally told 40-50 mins on one side then 10 on other, now told 20-25 mins on one side then as much as required on other), DD has regained 5 oz in just 2 days. Which takes her to 8lb 6oz, up from a low of 8lb 1oz, with a birth weight of 8lb 11oz. Much relief... My 10 day appointment is on Tuesday (should be Monday but bank hol). Am hoping she'll be back to birth weight then...

Sheena I know just what you mean re tiredness. I've worked nasty shift patterns in my time so thought I was pretty good at not getting sleep, but the long birth knocked me totally for six.

Hawkmoth · 31/08/2009 17:28

Hello all, birth story on AN thread.

James halfway through having a poo - lovely stuff.

Anyone else top-up feeding? I'm planning to wean him off the FF when he's about 10lb or so... thoughts?

Aren't afterpains shit? Mine made me shake all over with the agony. Thank god they don't last.

I didn't use anything for my stitches, but rather irresponsibly used my DD's toothmug to pour warm water on them while peeing!

Talking of piss... how do babys know that they get maximum impact by pissing through their clean nappy and clothes at 0430?

LucyTownsend · 31/08/2009 21:47

Hi everyone,

Have been lurking on the ante-natal thread but too scared to post as was convinced this baby was going to be a September baby being due on the 28th August!

However, baby boy Jesse decided to surprise us by coming 6 days early on the 22nd August.

And I hated the afterpains too - didnt have any last time round so they came as quite a shock this time!

Confuzzeled · 01/09/2009 07:33

Morning, just thought I'd pop in and say hola. Ds was born on the 25th and been meaning to come say hello since then.

Lucy - I also had terrible after pains this time, but they only lasted a few days.

cairns · 01/09/2009 09:01

Morning. Yes we have the 4am poos and pee here, great fun. In fact this morning DS2 decided that 1am and 4am would be fun to do that too!! straight after a sleepy feed.

Well on my own today for the 1st time and already had a disastrous start so come on mn to escape. DH went back to work this am and DS1 (who had been up half the night teething and happened to nicely time it when DS2 was asleep) burst into tears when DH left screaming 'daddy gone' . Poor thing, he had got rather used to him being around.. so I was left on the doorstep with a screaming toddler and a baby who wanted a feed and to be put down for a nap.. fun!! I did get quite teary (hormones and tiredness)Anyhow.. all sorted now for a bit just be interesting what the rest of the day/week brings.

Surprisingly no afterpains here, BF going well so far and my big lad is now 11lbs 7!!! at 2 weeks old, although i do have mammoth boobs to show for that. Have just managed to clear a huge blocked duct though which I was worried might be turning to mastitis as the whole area was very red (but didn;t). Need to get refitted for some nursing bras I think, as am sure that has been the cause.

CoonRapids · 01/09/2009 16:22

Hi. We've had 'busy' day today too Cairns despite being at my parents and there being 3 adults to 3 children. During the space of an hour we had DS1 tantrum, followed by dd huge poo potty accident necessitating immediate bath during which time I was feeding DS2 and trying to eat sandwich, Then DS2 sick on the carpet followed immediately by yellow poo explosion. Parents then decided to take the 2 older ones to the library and mum managed to get DD's fingers caught in the buggy as she was opening it(ouch).

Looking forward to the school/nursery drop-off pick-up routine which starts tomorrow . Well looking forward to the hours when it's just me and baby boy anyway...baby please don't need a feed between 8.30 and 9.20 or between 11.45 and 12.15 or between 3pm and 3.30pm (is that possible, please!!!) Actually I can't complain as my mum's coming over in the morning to help get them ready...

YanknCock · 01/09/2009 16:26

My birth story is here about 69 posts in if anyone is interested. Leo just had his heel prick test and didn't even wake up! BF going well, but my CS scar is infected. It's superficial, but it smells funny. Went to GP and got a topical cream today, trying to avoid antibiotics so he doesn't get an upset tummy. Typing onehanded is hard!

OonaghBhuna · 01/09/2009 18:27

Hi all, havent been on much as its crazy in my house Ollie is 7 weeks today, cant believe it. He eats all night and prefers to rest during the day we resorted to a dummy, we never gave eith DDs a dummy and were really against them but its so different with three. He was BF all night and using my nipples as a dummy and then getting himself full of wind and then puking. So he can suck on his dummy and I can get some sleep!!! I am amazed it comforts him instantly.

CR- I totally understand managing tantrums and poo.We had a poo fest here on Friday with all children.

DD1 doesnt start school until the 10th!

Congrats to everyone who has given birth to their darlings

well my 1st post on here & lucy is already 4 weeks old, just does not seem enough hours in the day.Congratulations to all those who have given birth.
yank-your right to try & avoid the anti biotics,my scar split open twice once at 5 days just a bit then again at a week which was quite scarey, ended up with anti biotics & made lucy very unhappy but cleared the infection up but 4 weeks on i still have 2 small gaps in my scar but looking much better.
oonagh-wish i could get lucy to take a dummy as like you say she is using it for comfort & seems to breastfeed all night along with my ds who is 3 developing a dislike for his bedroom & getting out of his bed about 10 times a night im just so tired, but it will get better soon i keep telling myself !

Pretty scary arrival all round, but am recovering very quickly from an emergency C section due to madam being so wound up in her cord she was never going to make it out alive, followed by infections for both of us and a week in hospital, her in NICU, me in postnatal. Back at home now as of two hours ago.

Confuzzeled · 02/09/2009 19:32

Glad your home Duch, what a difficult time you had.

Hope your both well and glad to be home.

YanknCock · 04/09/2009 08:13

Glad you're home duchesse, sounds like you had a hellish time.

I think the little guy is trying to increase my milk supply, I knew this happened, just didn't think it would be after 9-10 days! He wants to feed all the time. He will take a dummy for comfort, but if it's boob he wants, he'll just spit the dummy out over and over and wail at me.

My mom is obsessed with his weight and seems surprised that he's not been weighed again since birth. What's the usual procedure over here? How often are babies supposed to be weighed? I tried getting on our scale last night with him and figured he weighed 8lbs, which is 6oz down from his starting weight (at 10 days old). Should he be more than that?

duchesse · 04/09/2009 09:39

Gosh Yank, I am surprised. They seemed excessively proactive at weighing and treating too much weight loss in our hospital trust. Most of the low dependency cots in the neonatal unit where the Guppy was were occupied by babies who had been readmitted because they had lost more that 10% of their birth weight.

But 6 oz for an 8 lb 6 oz baby sounds ok, I'm just surprised that he hasn't been weighed by the midwives when they come to your house. They weigh them every two days here. The Guppy was only just let out on Wednesday, having gone from 3350g at birth to 3050g, but the paediatrician was happy that she wasn't dehydrated and allowed us to leave.

Are you still being visited by the midwives? I would mention to them that the baby hasn't been weighed for a while. I'm sure they are meant to be wighing him.

I agree new borns should be weighed at almost every visit from the MW until she has discharged you (at about 10 days) and handed you over to the health visitor. Over here the HV will do about 3 home visits before you go to the clinic.

Yes- also agree. M has been weighed 5 times (at birth- obv!- at 4 days & 11 days by community midwife on what turned out to be innaccurate scales, and at 13 and 20 days by the health visitor on proper electronic scales). I think it's up to us to take her to the clinic as we see fit from here on in but I thought they monitored weight as standard in the first few weeks, especially until birthweight was regained. I'd ask your midwife or health visitor, yank.

yank-that is odd they have not weighed him, they weighed lucy at 5 days(offered to weigh at 7days but didnt want to wake her),10 days then at 20 days when health visitor came, will be 6 weeks by time health visitor comes to weigh again.think its important to have regular weigh ins especially with it being your 1st & breastfeeding to reassure you that your doing it right. With dc3 ,he was weighed every day as lost a lot of weight & was showing other signs of being dehydrated but with a lot of support we got the hang of feeding in the end.Even if they are not concerned about his weight he should still of been weighed by now.
