Ekka - ooh yes all our stuff is on repeat prescription, so I just tick the boxes, drop it in and they deliver it to a pharmacy in town. So easy!

How does everyone's DC's get on with finger food? We've tried DS with a rice cake, but he doesn't seem interested in putting it in his mouth. He'll wave it around then drop it, or if you hold it in his mouth for him, he gums it for about two seconds then lets go as well. I don't get how they eat non-pureed stuff with no teeth?!

(On the other hand, glad we didn't go with BLW as he'd probably have starved by now. The only food of ours he ever makes a grab for is crisps and mugs of coffee!)

Ekka · 13/05/2009 12:29

Caught up properly now - CSWS, sorry to hear about D, but I'm glad your night wasn't too bad....

Ds can now roll everywhere and pushes himself up nicely (finally) and can sit for a little bit, provided he isn't distracted! But his eating is awful, he's not really interested in either purees or finger foods, so I'm at a loss. We've been given some nutramigen formula for making up cereals and puddings, but it smells awful & he doesn't seem to like the taste. In fact the only foods he gets excited about are sweet potato, banana and pear, but when I try mixing them with other things he can tell the difference . Had him weighed again and he only put on 1oz this week, so the HV was a bit bothered. She suggested I made loads of puddings with the nutramigen to get the nutrition into him . Don't think it will work somehow. Then she admitted that if it weren't for weighing him, we'd never think there was anything wrong

And for anyone worried about babies not rolling, she said her son (who is 1) has only just started to roll, and she wishes he wouldn't as he rolls over every time he has his nappy changed

Ekka, we had double base prescribed but it ddn't really help, then i tried aveeno because it had been recommended elsewhere on MN. I might try again with the GP when we go back for the gaviscon review... wonder how she will take to the 'all my internet friends say so' argument!!

heather1980 · 13/05/2009 13:06

my job - i feel much better today, it's amazing what a good nights sleep can do. still stuffy and have a bit of a cough but much better than i was.
star - i can be a bit funny about cleaning too. i go through fazes of mad ocd cleaning then i lapse and the house is a tip again.
i much prefer to be in the garden or at the allotment, i have loads of stuff to pot on and plant out, but i've been feeling so rubbish that i've not done it yet.

ekka - do you use tubifast dressings or the 'clothes' type ones? we have a little boy at work and he has really bad eczema i always feel so sorry for the little mite.

Star - i would suggest white pasta for now as brown is hard to babies to digest, same with rice as well. If you are keeping him veggie, make sure he gets plenty of eggs/cheese/quorn type protein rich foods rather than filling him up with carbohydrates as he will get constipated. Have you tried yusing AK tiny pasts shapes - saves you chopping pasta up and they are so tiny that they don't need to chew them before swallowing (i know this because Joe's pasta does not touch the sides - he swallows it whoe as he's always so hungry for solids).

CSWS - you need to get your veggies in pretty quick for this year - ours have been in for while now. You might need to buy bigger plants like to get a harvest whilst its warm enough rather thanstarting from seed. i think it might be a bit late for potatoes but you could go for caulis, cabbage, courgettes, beans, peas etc. Have lots of these left over but don't think they'll survive the journey to yours!! hve you got a greenhouse? - anything will grow in there!! Purple sprouting broccoli can be planted soon for eating next year. DS1 is already checking the strawberry plants for fruit each day - they are only just flowering, he can't wait much longer!!

Myjob - it sounds like she has the mechanics to roll, just not the inclination. They often say that second babies are more sedentary and they don't need to move about to be entertained, they have a sibling for this. Joe just sits and watches ds1 dnace and skip. DS1 was definitely a talker, not a walker as he was 16mo before he walked. Joe makes lots of strange noises but nothing word like yet.

I haven't been on properly for a while, so I can't remember who said what. Sorry if I miss anything important.

CSWS - Glad you managed to get some sleep last night and that D is a bit better. I tried that falafel (half quantities and it was LOADS) recipe last night and it was good, but I think you need to up the spicing a little to compensate for the lack of salt. I tried to bake some of them in the oven to see how they turned out and they were ok, but a bit dry. But I made a sauce out of tahini, yoghurt and garlic to dip them in which helped a bit.

MM- Did you put a liner in M's nappy to wick the moisture away from her bottom? I'm really happy with those itti bitti ones. But I might not have bought them if I'd had to get medium and then upgrade to large, as they're expensive. (We went straight for the large size!). The good thing about the tots bots ones is that they're one size so will last all the way through.

CSWS - I think a veg patch is a great idea. I bet your DCs will love watching things grow. You could still plant some nice salady bits this year. We've been having lovely mixed leaves from the garden for a few weeks now, and they don't take long to grow.

S has worn himself out chasing some slippery mango round his tray for ages and has gone to sleep. I'm going to jump into bed for a snooze too now. Let's see how long I get .

aubergenie · 13/05/2009 16:58

Blimey ds is still asleep. I've had a lie-down and got up again. This is a personal best!

Well done! - she must have read all those posts about everyone rolling over! Has she suddenly got lots of teeth as well?

Go Naomi!

star6 · 13/05/2009 20:05

Yay Naomi!
No teeth here either. But Q can eat A LOT. I made him pureed white pasta with courgette and carrot (and a slice of apple for his poo) for dinner with a dessert of pureed mango. He also had some plain fromage frais. No sign of sleepiness at the moment, though...

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/05/2009 20:32

Rhian - the babies do have teeth, it's just that they are below the surface of their gums at the moment. This makes it completely different from an old person who has lost their teeth, and will thus have soft gums. Some things will be easier to eat with teeth, yes, but the vast majority of stuff can be eaten without.

Slow down on the veggie front ladies! I've only identified a bit of garden where I can put it - it's currently lawn, so am nowhere near the stage of being ready to actually grow stuff! I will prob aim to get it ready this year for growing stuff next. Most importantly, I need to work out how to keep the enormous rabbit population from eating them all before I can! Can those of you who have veg patches already tell me how big they are, and give me some idea of how much stuff you manage to grow in them please?
I do have an old plastic water tank that I could practice at growing something in this year. Suggestions please for something that will excite dd to see growing!

Well done Naomi! She must have realised that her mummy was worried and decided to put a stop to it.

Someone emailed me a link to this video clip about the dangers of socket covers. I thought I should pass it on, especially as our LOs are starting to move around more. Rather worrying.

Marthasmama · 13/05/2009 21:13

Myjob - Yay N!!! I bet she could do it all along and just didn't want to. Now she can roll, she won't stop, changing nappies becomes a real chore. Oh and the pincer grasp is just showing off.....

Myjob & Aubergenie - I did use the fleece liners but maybe I hadn't washed them enough (twice through). They've had another run through last night and today she was happy with the BumGenius (I have the now discontinued BumGenius Organic apparently! ) I had to the Tots Bot off her tonight as she wouldn't settle so I think I am going to have to take a leaf out of your book Myjob and stick with disposable nappies at night.

Aubergenie - I hadn't thought about the sizing with the Itti Bittys. M is in the mediums and it would cost a fortune to upgrade in a few month's time. Hmmmmmmm

CSWS - As a teenager I was a veggie and had my own vegetable patch in the garden. I grew radishes, runner beans, carrots and beetroot. Radishes are really easy to grow but probably not that much fun to eat unless your dd has a grown up pallet. Carrots are good as they tend to look nothing like shop bought ones. They go all wonky as they grow round stones etc. You can also get get multicoloured carrot seeds so you'll have a nice surprise each time you pull one up. I could never get my beetroot to grow very large but that could have been impatience! My vegetable patch was about 6ft by 3ft and I had four rows of veggies with the beans at the back. I was an organic mini-farmer too! This might give you some ideas too. We are going to sort a patch out for ds to grow some veggies but we have no idea where yet. He does Eco-club at school which involves growing and looking after vegetables. He loves Eco-club!

Argh The Apprentice is making me cringe 'Those people'..... eeeek!

I'll reply to everyone else in a minute....

That was something I meant to tell you...... I was wandering round the local shopping centre today and I saw a woman with a Rose and Rebellion baby carrier on so I stopped her and asked her about it. It was three O'clock and she had been wearing it since 10am. She said it was comfy and she could get her baby in and out of it easily. (having done so a couple of times in the day) She had hired it from NCT and I think I'm going to do the same.

Back to The Apprentice.....

ronshar · 13/05/2009 21:35

Oh man that video was boring and I watched it all the way through... I dont like socket covers because I can never get the buggers out. I have always taken the line of removing the child rather than the risk iyswim.
Thank you for the link.

Its good that all the poorly babies are getting better. It is getting warmer why are we all still suffering with cold etc??

Myjob see the babies get up and party when we are not looking. I bet Naomi has really been rolling, crawling and spending ages on her tummy. It just is when you are not looking W has to be removed from the bars of his cot every time he goes to sleep. Not sure what he is doing in there? Must be a great party!

I would love a vegetable patch but am too lazy to weed the garden I do have

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/05/2009 21:43

I didn't know that the NCT hired out carriers. Mine is in the post now.

How old (roughly) was her baby MM, and was she being carried on the front or the back?
