jenwa · 28/05/2009 10:28

star hey for Q sleeping better. Hope it is the way to go from now on

hmm Glad P did not vomit yest (appart from small bit) hope she is ok today.

8myjob* is DS having night terrors like my dd? Its horrible to see but they are completely unaware of it.

Was not sure you could give peanut butter until they were 1? Is it onoly if there is a nut allergy? I will have to try P on it then. We all love it and Marmite

Made some apricot chicken and the lentil meal yesterday from Annabal Karmel, dds ate them well.

off to a wine bar for lunch with kids haha!!! Will see how that goes. Am meeting my sisters friend who is lovely so hopefully kids will be fine! If not I will give them wine and let them sleep... haha, no I do actually have a bag full of toys and treats. And I have made them lunch to take. Its a tapas bar so hoping it will be nice. The bloke wants to make it child friendly in the day but I want to make sure I have the right food to keep the kids happy. Marmire sandwiches and a puree meal for P.

Oh and DD1 had no teeth until she was 13 months, got 4 then none again until 18 months! DD2 looks like she will have huge rabbit ones they are massisive in her gums!

Oh, wonder how bethoo is doing?

Right off I go and get bags in car and must remember to wake P up!!!!

myjob - well done with the scones

What's the consensus on oatabix?

aubergenie · 28/05/2009 12:17

Oh no Myjob - Sorry to hear you're ill. That sounds like what I had (and it still hasn't gone). Is it all in your sinuses?

Glad to hear you and ds had fun making the scones. I can't wait till S and I can cook together.

I think S rolled over my mistake actually - he's shown no signs of attempting it again.

Star - Sorry, I missed your question earlier about the beans. Soak them overnight (covered). Change the water and bring them to the boil, then simmer them until they're soft. The time it takes depends on how old the beans are but I would say check after half an hour and keep going if you need to. Then drain them, cool them and bag them up for the freezer. I'm sure tinned ones are fine - the rest of your diet is really healthy, but I do them myself when I can be bothered as I think they're a bit nicer (and it's cheaper, but it is a faff)

I just got this Tomy baby light show thing off Ebay, thinking that it might help S to settle to sleep better. It plays really warped, tinny sounding lullabies and projects lights on the ceiling. He loves it!! BUT he's managed to unclip it from the side of the cot already. I'm just glad it didn't fall on his head, as it's really heavy.

I'm BORED today. Can't go out as I'm expecting a delivery and have to be here from 9-5. Boo.

aubergenie · 28/05/2009 12:25

Myjob - Yes, I think you might need more butter and milk. It's worth a try. My friend gave me a recipe for some butternut squash muffins. I haven't tried them yet, but you could try them instead:

butternut squash and raisin muffins

8oz SR flour
1 tsp bk powder
1 1/2 oz butter
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
7 oz butternut squash grated
2 oz raisins
3 floz milk

200 dg/ 400dg/ gas6

sieve flour, rub in butter then add the rest. Roll out dough, cut into 12 scones . cook for 15-20 mins.

Star - I've given S oatibix, and also used one crumbled up in lieu of breadcrumbs in a couple of recipes when I felt he was eating too much wheat in the day. According to the BLW book, anything with 0.3g of salt per 100g is classed as a low salt food. Oatibix have 0.38g, so not bad. (Don't worry - I don't know that off the top of my head, I happen to have some in the cupboard. And did I mention, I'm bored.)

star6 · 28/05/2009 12:39

hadn't checked the box can't believe that . Just had dh look and there's sugar. wtf?? Why does sugar need to be added to everything? I've been giving oatabix (soaked in breastmilk) as a "texture" for Q added to fruit and veg. He copes well with it, but it is mushed. It also helps him poo. Is there a more organic version of this that's just as easy (crush, mix and go)?
Those muffins sound yummy aubergenie

I know Star, it drives me mad too.

And don't get me started on the way they label things. Salt being listed as sodium, so you have to multiply it by 2.5 or listed per serving, not per 100g, or listed in mg rather than g per 100g.

I spent about 10 minutes comparing soft cheeses the other day, trying to figure out which one had the least salt in, and by the time I'd worked one out, I'd forgotten what was in the previous one. Dp said he'd make me a chart to keep in my purse as he knows my maths isn't too hot.

star6 · 28/05/2009 12:53

Maybe MN should have a list of the lowest salt cheeses, cereals...etc. and sugar free stuff.
Oh! I've been giving Q plum organic fromage frais. no sugar. I saw that sainsbury's own fromage frais in pots have no sugar, either. has anyone had these? The ingredients look similar but I'm not sure to be honest. anyone seen these? They are £1 for 6 instead of £1.99 for 6 like plum organic baby ones.

Also - what about just plain tesco fromage frais - natural, nothing added, comes in a bigger tub?

I might try those... but sure Q would eat the whole pot he can't get enough yogurt. Someone told me to give fromage frais a while ago? not yogurt? Now I can't remember why- heather was it? acidity I think. I'm losing my head!

star6 · 28/05/2009 13:01

and no colours or flavours - I always check for those... I'm a bit OCD about it actually

Marthasmama · 28/05/2009 13:07

Hello ladies - My you're all chatty today. M is in asleep in her cot again and has been up there for nearly two hours! She woke up after about 30 mins but, had a little play and settled herself back to sleep! Yay! Shame it doesn't seem to work that way at night though. She was terrible again last night, I have no idea why she is so good during the day and so bad at night. She settled herself once in the night but only after crying for ages (we were shushing, patting and in the end picking up and putting down) but she was very restless and needed a big cuddle after having 20 mins of fitful sleep. She then went straight to sleep on me and so we popped her back on her tummy and she stayed asleep until 6.30. I hate putting her on her tummy but felt we had no real choice last night.

Aubergenie - I love baking and now that M is having long day time naps I might get a chance to do some! Yay! I will have to try those scones and those muffins. I try to put raisins etc in my baking as I hate them and it means I won't eat them!

Myjob - I mentioned that ds might be having night terrors during one of our fb chats. DS used to have them and they wake up really confused. Yay to the baking. I find baking with ds really hard as I can never find things for him to do. I think maybe I am too much of a control freak!

Star - Yes everything has sugar in it doesn't it? It's getting like the States! My SIL lives in Kalamazoo and moans that American food is just loaded with sugar and salt, in the most strange food items. We get the Racheal's Organic yoghurts which are sweetened with fruit juice. M is still not a big fan of yoghurt though.

This post is taking me ages to write as DS is playing on DH's Nintendo DS (not at all confusing) and keeps asking me for help!

Marthasmama · 28/05/2009 13:14

Great minds eh Myjob!

Hmm - Lots going on with you! I keep missing your posts as you have been doing one big one a day and it keeps getting lost amongst all the others! Good to hear that your breastfeeding yoga is paying off with a less vomitty P. Well done on sticking to your guns, you know what's best for P and I always feel we should trust our instincts.

I bought these to go above M's cot in her bedroom. I think it might be too ironic though......

star6 · 28/05/2009 13:16

I know MM food in america is AWFUL! I always tried to shop at trader joes or wholefoods as you just couldn't trust anything else. Or Co-ops were another trustworthy organic option.
We went back for our wedding in 2007 and we were both at the portion of food put in front of us at our first meal out when we arrived. HUGE!

MM - We have put Q to sleep on his tummy since VERY early on. He's absolutely fine. We have a breathing monitor (angelcare - recommended by loulou... loulou is like my sleep angel... please take your crown...). But now, we don't need to use it as much (but I still do ). My step mother is a nurse and she said it's totally fine. Especially since he uses a dummy, but even without, at this age especially, they are old enough to move their heads to breathe or whatever...

Has anyone ever tried one of these? I thought they looked like a good option for when we go somewhere where there aren't any high chairs.

star6 · 28/05/2009 13:43

Yes! aubergenie - I have one and I love it. Q sometimes tips to either side, though. But it works.

Marthasmama · 28/05/2009 14:32

I was going to get one of those Aubergenie as I go to my mum's house a lot and normally have to cart the Bumbo round with me. Good to know they work Star.

Marthasmama · 28/05/2009 15:11

Has anyone got a sun tent? M loves being out in the garden with ds, but I want to avoid putting sun cream on her too often as Ds and I are allergic to it so M probably is too. Sun tents seem to provide good protection, but I'm not sure if she's a bit little to enjoy being in one. They seem a bit enclosed.

Marthasmama · 28/05/2009 16:02

Argh! Bloody DH! I took M out in the garden, put her hat on her, put a little suncream on her face (not loads because of the aforementioned allergy) and put in her the shade. I hate the sun and the feeling's mutual so DH sent me indoors before I burst into flames. About 20 mins later I heard DH come in to answer his phone and heard M crying. SO I popped out to grab her onyl to find her on the trampoline, no hat on in full sunshine. She now has bright red cheeks and ears. Poor little thing. Stupid man. His excuse - 'I thought she was covered up so she was ok.' Her FACE wasn't covered up hence the hat and the shade! So, we now have a sun tent on order and I am going to make him pay for it!

KSal · 28/05/2009 16:31

Hi star i use the sainsburys kids fromage frais for emma, they are pretty much the same as plum except without the fennel, chamomile or whatever(!) no sugar added and nothing funny in them... and as you say half the price. The rachel's are great too, but as myjob says they are big. the sainsburys fromage frais are nice little baby size pots.
