I'm here, finally getting to sit down and drink a homemade Frappucino. I've not been out in the sun, but I've been busy painting our front door in a desperate attempt to posh up the front of our house.

MM- Yes, S is a terrible trumper. He gets that from his dad, not from me. How is M now? I hope she's not sickening for anything.

CSWS - I meant to say before - please don't feel bad for making me doubt myself. I'm so pleased that you've finally got D's sleeping under control, and it seems you definitely made the right choice for you. I think we have made some (very small) improvements on the sleep front. S is definitely not opening his mouth like a baby bird every time he wakes up, because he's desperate for milk. He has managed to settle himself back to sleep on a few occasions. In fact that was all going well until he got a cold so it may well improve again if I keep at it. I'm going to keep trying a while longer and see how things go. Nothing's going to work while he's under the weather anyway.

And well done D on the commando crawling!

How did the flan go down?

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/05/2009 20:16

Phew - here at last and ds finally asleep - took 25 mins this evening, but he did bath and get ready for bed at friend's (been there for barbie all afternoon) and then doze off for maybe 10 mins on way home, which won't have helped.

Flan went down well thanks Aubergenie .

Yay for N being a little better.

Right, off to grab a little bite of something for dinner.

Great day in the warm sunshine today - went to a history day (DH's heaven) and the park. Q exhausted. I'm sooooooooooooooo tired. so tired I can't even explain. Sorry in advance for rambling delerious, nonsensical post:

Thanks everyone for advice. He was better tonight. Yes, he's had a really ridiculous cold for more than 2 weeks now Really snotty all the time, constantly wiping his nose, drooling loads, horrible barking seal cough (was only a few times a day before and now it's all the time), ocassional fever. DH told me off this morning for "not doing anything about it" But I DID call the GP several times and they kept telling me it's a cold and if he's not getting worse, he will be ok, just give more milk...etc.
So, today, cough was so bad that we rang NHS direct (well, I did) and got a call back and got the same answer.
I do think it could be an ear infection, but it comes and goes, so I'm just not sure. When I touch his left ear sometimes he SCREAMS. Other times, he doesn't even notice.

I usually have a nice solid bedtime routine for Q, dinner (tea), bath, sleeper on, story with DH, story with DH and mommy, bf, cot. I totally broke it last night. I thought it was over, but he went down in his cot at 8pm tonight after the routine and feed. Who knows when he'll wake. OK, anyone... anyone... what should I do tonight? I'm deleriously tired, so I just need to be told. When I asked DH, I got "I don't KNOW!!" ugh!
So... when he wakes... what do I do??? Should I feed him the first time and not the others? What if he screams? I canNOT let him scream in his cot for 2 hours (which he is capable of doing). I can't even honestly remember what I did before to get him to settle. If he won't re settle by me patting his bum in the cot, do I pick him up and for how long? I know no one has the perfect ansewr and every baby is different, but maybe I'll just try whoever replies first . I still feel so ill and congested, horrible cough and bit of a fever and just need sleep.
sorry for the desperation. I can't even form a proper thought.

star6 · 24/05/2009 21:15

OH I just got my period. THANK GOODNESS! You all scared me with the talk of withdrawl being not effective and bethoo falling pg. I've been a total nervous wreck as my period was 1.5 weeks late! This has given me the burst of energy I needed to carry on with tonight.

Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 21:16

Star - If you even think he might have an ear infection get Q to the doctors. If it is an ear infection it will be so simple to sort out and it is very quick and easy for them to check. Plus they will give Q the once over to check he is ok and only has a cold. It's better to get him checked out, the dr won't mind and at least you will know for certain. Unfortunately I am still feeding M back to sleep, but she is genuinely hungry. I'm not necessarily right and only giving you my view, but my instincts would say that if Q is ill, he'll need to nurse more to help him get better. Can you kick DH out of bed and have the bed for the two of you so you can pop him in with you? That should save you from getting out of bed to attend to him. As I say, I am not the best person to give advice as I am hardly coping myself with the sleep issue, so hopefully someone who has been successful will be along! I do feel your pain. Oh and as for DH, is he not capable of speaking to a dr or taking Q to the dr? I don't see why it is your responsibility!

Aubergenie - It's hard to know what to do for the best when they're ill isn't it? I just give in and let M have what she wants when she's ill. I always let myself have what ever I fancy when I'm ill.

M has seemed a little more her usual self this afternoon so hopefully it was nothing. She is a funny little lady, for some reason she has really taken against the MIL. She cries every time she picks M up. It isn't just the unfamiliar person thing as the SIL is back from America, has never met M before and M loves her. It's just the MIL - hee hee. [evil] M spent an hour, a whole bluming hour feeding tonight before bed. My nips are sore again now!

aubergenie · 24/05/2009 21:19

Star - I'm hesitant to give any sleep advice, as we all know things haven't been going well here either, BUT here's my twopenneth, anyway. I think you should do whatever gets you through the night to enable you to get some rest. If feeding Q back to sleep will get him to go off more quickly, then I think you should do that. Then when you're less tired, and he's better you can address the whole thing. (That's what I did last night, and I'm feeling much more able to cope with things today.) Also, when i get a cold, I get really thirsty - plus the weather is warm - so he could probably do with the extra feeds. It wouldn't be fair on Q to leave him to cry if he's ill.

Can you bring him into your bed with you and banish your DH to the sofa for the night?

I really hope you're able to get some rest.

aubergenie · 24/05/2009 21:21

X post, MM.

Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 21:21

Aubergenie - We just gave Star the exact same advice! We must be right

star6 · 24/05/2009 21:22

Thanks MM and aubergenie. Yes, DH is banished to the sofa. He often is . i'm going to do what you both said. Just get through so we can both feel better. Thanks. Night night.

aubergenie · 24/05/2009 21:23

at M and your MIL, MM.

Oh and Myjob - I missed your post earlier. So glad to hear N is on the mend.

Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 21:23

And again! Doh!

Myjob - Meant to say, hurrah!!!! N is finally getting back to normal. That must be a weight off your mind!

Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 21:24

Aubergenie - I am getting a bit frightened now.

aubergenie · 24/05/2009 21:29

The funny thing is, MM, we're probably the worst two people on this thread to give any kind of advice about sleep, as now that D is sorted, we've got the worst sleepers (apart from Q too at the moment of course)! Still great minds think alike.

I'm glad you're going to do that Star. My DP is often on the sofa too. We got a really expensive new bed in the January sales and he can count on one hand the number of times he's spent a whole night in it.

Honeymoonmummy · 24/05/2009 21:30

Evenin' all! I've got my Aunty Flo visiting or whatever that ridiculous expression is. It actually surprised me as I didn't get any warning signals. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow, that's when the pain usually kicks in. I used to take mefenemic acid (sp) tablets for period pain, guess I can't take them while BF. Typical for it to happen on a bank holiday weekend when I can't ring the docs! I'll stick with paracetomol, they're OK and ibuprofen is, right? But hey, I can get pregnant again now. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I'm on a tidying spree so haven't got time to stop and chat and my back is bloody killing me, has been all day, I went and did supermarket shopping yesterday, got back and asked DH to unload car as he always does since I got achiness and he said "my back's aching" And???? So in a strop while he was getting his shoes on I got all the shopping in myself, am paying for it now That strop may well have been PMT rather than PND, come to think of it!!!

It's come bang on cue actually, Poppy has slept thro most nights for 10 days now, I've just started weaning her and she seems to be taking less milk, all the reasons for periods to start again. It's weird how predictable our bodies are, isn't it? Makes me realise how mortal we are.

Wow, that was deep. I'm off to clean the bog now

aubergenie · 24/05/2009 21:31

MM - He, he. This is getting a bit freaky isn't it!

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/05/2009 21:43

Gosh, periods abounding on this thread! I thought you were supposed to stay off ibuprofen when bf. Have I been wrong for all these years?!

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 21:47

Hmm - Mefenemic Acid is in the same family as ibuprofen - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, so it might be worth checking first. You sound like me with the stubbornness! The shopping thing is just like something I would do. I am very good at cutting off my nose to spite my face. Sorry that you're suffering now though.

Aubergenie - we must be on the same sleep-deprived wave length tonight.

Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 21:51

CSWS - This gives very basic advice, but I think I recall being told to avoid it when ds was young. DO you not give D Nurofen for children or other baby ibuprofen?

Honeymoonmummy · 24/05/2009 22:01

I've given Poppy baby ibuprofen. I'll stick to paracetomol I think. God I can't even have paracetomol extra cos I'm off caffeine! The sacrifices we make, eh?

My short and highly out-of-character cleaning spree is now over, I'm off to bed. Night al1! Sorry I'm not around much at the moment, I've still not got round to getting a new (non-work) laptop. I might get a netbook or whatever they're called, the small ones? Can u get word and excel on them, does anyone know?

Honeymoonmummy · 24/05/2009 22:02

Hey, do you think all our periods will synchronise cos we're on the same postnatal group?

Marthasmama · 24/05/2009 22:05

Hee hee! I was thinking that it was weird that some of us seemed to be within a couple of days of each other.....

Star - sorry you felt so lousy last night and sorry i was not on yesterday to give you a big hug, as very busy here. Just to say i agree with the others that when they are ill, its best to do what you think will help them sleep ie co-sleep, cuddles, bf etc. i used to sleep with ds1 when he ws ill just so we all got sleep. He would never settle on our bed when well but when he was poorly it was the only thing that worked. You can't try a new sleep strategy when they are still poorly and you need to get your strength back and then try and sort it all out when you are all well. With ds1 once he was well we went back to putting him down awake etc and he got it really quickly.

will try to get on again later....
