Very quick post to say hi to all.

Interesting Gill what you say about Malc becoming more reserved when among people he doesn't know. We are seeing this too. DS is definitely getting shy with strangers, but if we're with them for a while (like, 3 hours or so!) then he will eventually start getting used to the other kids his age and eventually even start interacting, sort of. (interacting = taking their toys off them)

Am sure it is a Developmental Stage, shows they know who's important

Gill79 · 25/05/2009 22:24

Rozzy we were in Crail. I'm actually a bit of a local cause we lived in Tayport until I was four and we moved to England.

Hello Swotty!

Strawberry must be off on hols now - hopefully able to relax a bit? Fingers crossed for the tests when you get back.

Egg it's hard enough racing round play equipment trying to cover all the bits you can jump off for one toddler let alone two....

We have two new words! Cheese - "xeeeezzz" (with lots of spitting) and socks - a snort with "x" at the end. Also he can now quack with great gusto at the right place in the 5 little ducks song and shout in the right place in the sleepy bunnies song (if anyone knows it?) Had a lovely afternoon as a little friend came round to play and for once he really did play - they were chasing each other round, playing peekaboo with each other plus a bit of slapping each other round of course!

Hope everyone had a good bank holiday - we were lucky with the weather for once (in the south at least!)

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 26/05/2009 10:11

hi everyone!!!!!

hope you are all ok, weather has been pretty good here too,

SWOTTY how u doing?

had a fab time on sat for my sisters fancy dress 21st- i even dragged mom along too dressed as a nun- she got more attantion than anyone!!!!! i must be getting old though as i found most of her friends bloody rude and very tarty!!!!!![lol]

will add a pic of me mom and my sis for you to laugh at

spk soon ladies,

Hello all. Hope you had a gd weekend. DDs are fine EGG, although as I type dd2 is having (another) row with her boyfiend. I was thinking like you that another meet up's due! We must sort something soon.

Jacksmama · 26/05/2009 19:30

Hi all - Jackbaby grabbed DH's bottle of Irish Spring Body Wash yesterday while he was having a bath, tipped it back and took a glug... much wailing, crying, puking up soap bubbles later... Poor little man! But I'm assuming that'll be the last time he does that...

He had his Dr's check-up yesterday and is apparently perfectly average - 50th centile for both height and weight. But GP was amazed at the number of teeth he has (14). And his flirting ability

rozzyraspberry · 26/05/2009 20:47

God yes egg - not sure how you cope with 2 toddlers. It feels like every time I turn around ds3 is standing on a chair or helping himself to stuff out the fridge or bin (yuck!!). On Sunday ds2 was shouting 'Andrews stuck in the basket (where their wooden train set is kept)' so I came through thinking he'd climbed into again but all I could see was a little bum and legs coming out of the top of the box. Hilarious!

His new favourite thing is making burping noises which his big brothers think is very funny - which obviously encourages him to keep going. We went right round the shops tomorrow with 'burp, burp' very loudly yesterday. Oh the joys of having big brothers to teach you 'cool' things.

Hope everyone is well and enjoying half term - our schools are only off next Monday and Tuesday.

gingermumi · 26/05/2009 21:18

Hmmm, toby can climb like a mountain goat and today (with small friend as accomplice) he cleaned the loo with my hair brush! Mad as fish my son!

swottybetty · 27/05/2009 06:02

hello - everytime i try to write a proper post i panic at the prospect of keeping up so this is just another waves to y'all.

re the lo's getting more reserved, i think dd def got more wary of strangers than she used to be. my pop-shrinkery decided that that was prob a good thing and an act of mature self preservation. last couple of month she's back to her usual self though and spends life trying to catch eye of any and every stranger so she can impress them with her putting-foot-in-mouth-trick.

rozzy, i know exactly what you mean about being less nervous about number two cause of loving number one so much. does on reflection seem a bit mental to have got preg when dd was 6mo. i had no idea just how much more work a kids could be only nine months later.... bum and legs stuck out the basket sounds v sweet .... as does cleaning the loo with a hairbrush ginger. its funny how much they copy at this age, isnt it?

sarah and strawb i hope you both have lovely holidays and strawb i hope time passes quick you get back for the tests. i always think you are so wonderwomany for coping with two kids and a hotshot job and a always-away husband as it is - i cant imagine not having your bloke around to chat to every night when you have a scare like this.

gill - i love the sleeping bunnies song. i'm never sure about a lot of these new fangled nursery ryhmes that have appeared in the 30 odd years since i was a lo (that bloomin bobbin song being a key example of rubbishness) but the sight of loads of little kids jumping up and down to the hopping bunnies always make mes smile. we too have "cheese" - "chiz' always said very seriously and while nodding. in much the same way that tos (toast or any bread) or "bizz-k" (biscuits) is said.

hello to egg and ginger [waves} - tis omy who is the other teacher. has she been around much? i must post this or my internet will crash and i will be most upset.

oh - slacker - ty for words of reassurance re homebirth. and wow at iron count of 8 and still hb'ing. i am downing loads of spatone and have felt quite a bit better last three days.

elliepac · 28/05/2009 07:51

hello everyone,

just thought I would check in . DD is having her MMR jab today so cue lots of crying and a grumpy baby in this house today.
DD hasn't experienced the 'becoming more reserved' phenomoenon that some have. She's a little show off through and through and it takes forever to get round the supermarket with her squawking 'iya' at ever stranger we pass! I hope those of you on holiday have a lovely one, am slightly jealous

Half term here now so am on holiday . Have had a rather lazy week. DS has slept over a t a friend's house last night so it is very quiet in our house this morning. Am going to LOndon this weekend with my mum to see Mamma Mia. First time I will have left DD overnight. Am sure DH will cope for 36 hours but god only knows what state the house will be in when i get back!

Having been on holiday this week, have only just discovered how addicitive this mumsnet lark is. Is there a thread for those who need psychological help to be able to TURN OFF THE PC AND DO SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD (not to be confused with that famous children's programme from the 80's Why Don't YOu).

Anyway on that note had better go and do the boring stuff.

elliepac · 28/05/2009 07:53

Having just re-read my post I realise I sound like a muppet! I am on holiday but also said I was jealous of those on holiday! WHat I meant was those who had gone somewhere beautiful if that makes sense. Oh dear, can you tell that it's early?

missnatalie · 28/05/2009 10:40

rozzyraspberry · 29/05/2009 22:04

Have a great holiday Sarah - hope the weather stays like this (well it was fantastic up here today).

swottybetty · 30/05/2009 22:04

its so hot! school is so nice when there's noone here. dd has had the run of all the sports pitches and is v sweet toddling off into the distance.

been losing sun hats at an incredible rate. dd just pulls them off. spent the morning searching for some with a tie under the chin - it's incredible how few have them. sewing them on is out of the question, luckily found one in the end in tkmaxx. also a bit gutted that i have bought dd some really nice summer clothes without even thinking about the fact that her blue-white-pink skin just needs total coverage. leggings type things are all over the place so bottom half no problem (tho' i do look longingly at some of the shorts..) but there are no nice long sleeved summer tops. i think i shall design a range along with disposable sun hats you can buy by the dozen and get myself onto dragons den.....

hope you're all enjoying the sunshine.

lljkk · 01/06/2009 18:40

Hi Gals!
I am sunburnt : very careless on my part.

LO is fine, at least, I creamed him up good.

OK, I'm still fretting over food. Below what LO eats, how bad does this look?

Breakfast cereals (with or w/out milk or yogurt)
Porridge, Porridge oats
Bread, toast

Cheese biscuits
Almost any sugary food
Cow's milk

  • Diluted fruit juice

  • Baked beans
    A few crisps
    Cheese biscuits, breadstix
    Peanut butter

  • Pasata or pasta sauce, even if mixed with mashed veg/potatoes

Meat or fowl
Pastry
Chips

  • Tomato sauce

That's about it; he won't touch eggs, pasta or mashed potatos for instance. * for vaguely fruit/veg things. Written out it doesn't seem so bad, but I'm getting fed up with his limited repertoire, sigh.

swottybetty · 02/06/2009 23:55

lljkk - that looks like a good list, esp the meat and fowl bit. i would find the no pasta or mash a bit of a hassle but only from a practical pov.

funny, cause yesterday i was thinking how the main limit on what dd eats is my own limitations - i had visions of the pair of us eating this wide and varied diet of freshly cooked meal that i threw together twice a day (not counting brekkie here cause even in my dreams i'm allowed one unimaginative meal...)

read a great thing in paper a couple of months ago about how preschoolers crave density of carb and protein cause thats what they most need. also said that pre 12month they are quite liberal about what they eat but then get progressively more conservative til late teens....

Slacker · 03/06/2009 11:04

Lljkk - that lot doesn't look too bad, is he still bf? It's not like he's missing whole food groups. Have you tried chips made of other veg, like sweet potato or parsnip? During the day my boy has a pretty limited range of foods, usually bagel or cereal for breakfast, a pot of Hipp pureed fruit and a bit of whatever I'm having for lunch, then nothing much till dinner, usually what we're having unless it's very spicy. He's eating much better than his sister did at this age for sure! And my fussiest child (#1 of course!) now eats almost anything aged 14 so they get there in the end.

Swotty how are you doing, hanging in there? A nice gentle homebirth is worth waiting for so don't give in to any induction pressure until 42 weeks at the earliest, and preferably not then! Or maybe you've had it overnight and are too busy adoring your new baby to post and let us know

Hi Elliepac, hope London was good - we had a lovely half term too, it makes all the difference having good weather.

Rozzy and Ginger, I was feeling so glad that my boy wasn't a climber, or rather that I'd got him contained (part of the living room is supposed to be secure so he can't escape) until I just found him upstairs heading for the bathroom - i will now need to watch him at all times!

Feeling very today - the poor boy missing on the Air France flight was one of DS2's classmates - absolutely horrific .

swottybetty · 03/06/2009 17:24

i have to turn off the radio everytime they talk about that plane crash. also the rucksack couple. i wish you could filter out a lot of the news once you become a parent.

slacker-oh to be cuddling a tiny little baby. his cot has been set up for over a month now and i have morphed into the world's grumpiest hormonal witch. sweep and acupuncture tomo. gave in at 40 + 10 last time, dh may force me in at 42 weeks just to save our relationship ....

Slacker · 03/06/2009 19:07

I know what you mean about filtering the news - it just makes you want to never let your kids out of your sight. At least there were no TV crews outside school today, trying to get quotes from the kids, unlike yesterday

Re being overdue - my first 2 were born at 39+6 and 40 weeks exactly - imagine how I felt when DS3 didn't turn up till 41+5!! I was climbing the walls! But a sweep set me off so hopefully it will work for you too. And get enough rest every day, all my labours except one I've been knackered because it's happened at night. You'll be fine

rozzyraspberry · 03/06/2009 19:43

Hey swotty - when is/was your due date? At least you know the end is in sight one way or another!! Take lots of brisk walks/waddles with your dd - the fresh air will cheer you up if nothing else!!

My lo's diet is not that varied either - he has a weetabix mashed with banana, lots of milk, a few handfuls of cereal to keep him happy whilst I get everthing else ready, then toast. Not much at lunchtime (not surprising since he eats so much at breakfast), then veg and chicken/beef/fish/pasta for tea. I second trying chips made with other veg - my older 2 still love sweet potato & parsnip wedges.

Swotty/slacker both of those stories are horrific - really makes you hold your lo's close doesn't it.

Gill79 · 03/06/2009 20:10

yup - the rucksack story was really bad wasn't it? It is true you get so much more affected by things once you're a parent.

Swotty - good luck!!!!

Malcolm is very bad with vegetables - the only way I can get them into him is to blend them in pasta sauce and add cheese to disguise the taste. Although a clever thing I tried today was melting cheese with avocado and then filling a pocket in a thick slice of toast with it. Yum yum apparently.
A typical day looks like:

Weetabix (he quite likes muesli as well!)
Bit of someone's toast
Raisins or fruit

Raisins or biscuits or fromage frais for snack

cheese sandwich for lunch
bottle of milk

pasta with secret veg, or with tuna or salmon, or a piece of fish steamed, or scrambled egg and toast. Quite often it gets rejected though and we end up with bread and cheese. Fruit or yoghurt for pudding. Bottle of night time formula before bed.

Not too bad but I wish it was more green and less bready!

Egg · 04/06/2009 20:58

Hi girls I was all set to keep up with the thread and then it fell off my Threads I am On and I forgot to check back in! Luckily it has been nice and slow moving though!

Slacker how sad about the little boy from your DS's school. It is sad anyway but to be so close to it must make it so much worse.

Swotty so much good luck to you! Know what you mean about lost hats too. And in winter we went through soooo many pairs of blooming gloves.

All ok here, except for my monster 3yr old who poos his pants every day but wees on the loo or potty perfectly.

lljkk DS1 turned into a nightmare eater at about 18 months and am praying DTs don't do the same as so far so good and they eat really well (and even DS1 is pretty good now compared to how he was).

DTs have the following...

Milk first thing (half a cup but sometimes hardly any)
Weetabix or Ready Brek (alternate days)
Half a slice of toast

Mid morning they have snack time which is fruit only (to encourage DS1 to actually EAT some fruit). Usually banana / pear / pineapple chunks (they love them!) / peach / grapes

Lunch their fave is cheesy veg pasta, can throw any veg in with the pasta and cheese sauce and they will eat it. Otherwise jacket spuds with tuna, quiche, fishcakes, omelette.

Mid afternoon snack is usually when we are out and will be more fruit (often an apple, or a banana if they didn't have one in morning), or the Ella's kitchen fruit smoothie things in pouches, or a breadstick / rice cake.

Supper we seem to have settled into some staple meals all three like which are usually fish or meat with mash with tons of veg mashed in (for DS1 who wont really eat it on its own) and separate veg as well as mashed in veg for babies. They love salmon/plaice/cod/lemon sole (mmmmm yummy fried!) chicken and sometimes lamb. Don't really eat much pork or beef mainly as I am crap at cooking it!

Also recently got them into mince and pasta (basically spag bol without the tomato) which they are keen on.

The best thing is THEY FEED THEMSELVES!!!! I know loads of BLW babies do this from 6 months etc, but DS1 only really fed himself properly from about 2 yrs or more, and they just get on with it now. I even let them feed themselves yoghurt now as they wont touch it otherwise, DS2 does it almost perfectly, DD is crap, but she enjoys it!

One thing we never have is rice. Anyone got any good rice dish recommendations (without tomato or celery)??? And some nice beef or pork dishes would be good too!

Egg · 04/06/2009 21:03

Ooops sorry it was so long and dull. Forgot to say they have milk at 6ish pm as well. And sausages and meatballs at least once a week each so they do have a bit more pork and beef than I thought.

And they loooooooove peas. Give them a load of petit pois with their meal and they eat the peas first with great excitement.

They also love biscuits. DS2 does not like chocolate though. DD loves it. She also loves cake. DS2 was given his first ever choc chip cookie today at a friend's house and he carried it round for ages before letting me eat it [hurrah for me!]. He likes those "Nice" biscuits that have coconut in best!

alkar · 05/06/2009 11:22

DS will eat anything.
Breakfast: weetabix, hot cross bun or toast for breakfast, snack would be a banana usually, cheese or grapes. I found some small apples in asda that are in the smartprice bags cos they're too small to sell and he loves these.

Lunch tends to be a sandwich although nothing dry cos he wont eat it and he will pick off any salad and eat that seperately so I have taken to putting mayo on them!

Dinner is anything really. I am veggie so he doesn't tend to get meat we have veggie sausage casserole, omlette, loads of risottos, pasta etc. He feeds himself every meal but we gave him cous cous last week - not recommended

Swotty I am convinced DS was a week early cos I spent every evening bouncing on a gym ball!!!

Hope you're having a good holiday Sarah.

swottybetty · 05/06/2009 14:20

its interesting reading everyone's eating habits. we had mmr this morning, hadnt realised that they gave another injection at the same time.

dd was a bit of a wreck after - she's now been asleep for three hours. i should just appreciate the time spent online with a cup of tea, but i'm starting to worry if she's ok. that said, she's been sleeping badly in the heat for a while now so maybe now that it's cooler she's just catching up.

dd has --

bit of milk in morning
porridge
and either bit of my toast or bit of dh's museli.

lunch and tea: at the moment we are eating lots of fishfingers, omelettes, mince-based stuff from freezer (chilli and spag bol go down v well), jackets with beans or chicken. also pot and veg mash. everything has to have cheese on it. there are loads of things like stews that she will eat occassionally but cant be relied on. one thing i have noticed is that at big sit downs with family she eats very well. doesnt matter what the food is, when there is a room full of other people eating she gets stuck in.

at least every other day lunch or tea will be more of the toast/bread, avacado and cheese variety rather than anything more substantial.

fruit and veg that get eaten round here: banana, avacado, fruit pots, melon, broccoli. those are prob the only things she'll eat consistently. apple occassionally gets a look in - like alkar's ds dd really likes the small ones she can hold herself. egg - dd likes to organise peas . they get moved one by one from plate to table, maybe back to plate before being methodically moved to the floor.

rozzy - was due last friday. induction booked for next friday. have been walking loads ever since about 7 months gone. tis so unfair . may try sex tonight. have told dh he may stick a picture of a more attractive woman on my back. he thought there was prob room for pictures of two attractive women.....
