Twiglett · 02/05/2005 21:52

oh gosh you've all been through the wars haven't you , glad all are on the mend though

DD slipped in the bath on Sunday night (sister's house forgot how slippy it was), unfortunately niece was taping us on her phone and then ran round the house showing everyone DD swan diving, glancing off side of bath and going under, then me going 'shit' , I thought I'd get better at this mum business

can't believe we're getting usurped

DD's birthday in 2 days .. arrggghhhhh, can't decide what kind of cake she'll have (DS got a frog that took days to make, I think she's just gonna get sprinkles )

Twiglett · 02/05/2005 21:53

can't believe we're getting usurped by another May babies group (that should read)

Bozza · 02/05/2005 21:55

Let DS do the sprinkling twiglett and then everyone'll be happy. All DD wants is a nice, messy piece of cake to attack

Good news. DH is going to Germany tomorrow but the laptop is staying here. So expect me to be spouting forth of an evening....

Judd · 02/05/2005 22:19

DS has had lots more accidents already than DD - Georgina is right, I think it's 2nd baby complacency. Some of it, however, is Older Sister Naughtiness...but she is always so eager to confess! "Baby Ollie is crying because I bopped him with my cushion"..."Baby Ollie fell over when I kicked him". I think he's just getting far to accomplished for her liking

Judd · 02/05/2005 22:26

My message doesn't seem to flow! That's because I posted it at 9pm and it didn't work somehow....
DS has got his first molar with relatively little pain (but SCAREY orange nappies!), just awaiting the matching 3 now! Today was meant to be a hearty family trip to Tatton Park but it rained really hard so I ended up at Tesco with the children whilst DH tried to repair our garage door. We are trying valiantly to recapture the carefree Bank Holiday feeling with yet another bottle of wine ("and snooker final" she whispers).

Libb · 02/05/2005 22:35

I am eating Indian takeout for the first time in yonks, except I can't taste it/smell it or appreciate any of it excpet the fact it is half price on Mondays - and ex has just pointed out that my sleeve is dragging in it . . . oh joy.

I am also daft enough to sit here and wish he would reconsider . . . lamenting old fool that I am. Where is my Guidebook to Men when I need it?

Libb · 02/05/2005 22:36

sorry, having a weak moment there.

GeorginaA · 02/05/2005 23:09

Oh Libb

huge hugs

I am glad that you are managing to keep a good relationship for ds and that you're able to stay friendly. Must be easier in so many ways and much harder in so many others...

Judd, your dd's confessions really made me laugh. I turned around yesterday to see my ds (2.7) standing on dd's stomach. When I told him off he just said "But she didn't cry". Quite true, as soon as he got off she just carried on her way, so I had to resort to patheic "Yes, well, that doesn't matter, you still might hurt her..."

Prufrock · 03/05/2005 21:11

Well I have a one year old. Actually One and 6 days now, and growing more gorgeous by the day. he (and his sister) have spent the last few days charming the pants off the visiting relatives - oh and playing in the Tesco Lion Ball pit - a hugely recommended present for 1 and 3 year olds.
Oh, and he climbed all the way to the topof the stairs today - having never climbed a single step in his life before! No more leaving him to wander between the hallway and living room whilst I Mumsnet!
Good luckwith the BD kbaby.

egypt · 04/05/2005 09:58

wow, you have a real toddler! glad all is well.

helsy · 04/05/2005 21:20

Made a momentous decision today to feed dd2 with whatever we have for tea (or bits of it, anyway) which given my paranoia about feeding her anything other than jars so far may be a bit ambitious. Whenever I've given her any finger foods she's been fine - it's me who worries - and she had scrambled egg on Saturday and loved it.
She's started cruising and standing up in her cot. We still haven't got any baby gates! Re: second babies - apart from the food, which I was far more relaxed about with dd1, I've noticed that I'm much less worried about dirt and don't sterilise everything or have a panic attack when someone sticks their fingers in her mouth. I'm also much less likely to go to A and E "just in case" if she falls/has a bang.
Hope all the imminently/already one year olds are all well!

Bozza · 04/05/2005 21:49

Well it was sort of "older brother naughtiness" in DD's case Judd - ie he left the stair gate open. I really need to get another for the bottom though because with the full wisdom of her 11.5 months experience (including falling downstairs and 24 hrs in hospital) DD is still determined to scale the stairs from the bottom whence she would inevitably get stuck at the other gate which we are now ultra careful about keeping closed at all times.

Still good news - all of her scabs have now fallen off. How quickly do babes heal? And she is enjoying the toddler room. Although she had only one nap yesterday and was exhausted last night - much like her mother. I need to think about party bags and what to put in them. With DS all the children were always a similar age to him but with DD they are ranging from 3 weeks to 4.5 years.

Satine we get all sorts of justifications "she didn't cry" "but she likes it" etc. And if she cries for some reason "I didn't do anything".

Bozza · 04/05/2005 21:52

Helsy hope it works out OK with the food. I've been doing this for a while with DD and really am finding it no trouble. Apart from that I am having to readjust my recipes. When it was DH, me and a 1yo I could just cook for two and then give DS a bit of ours. Now its DH, me, a 4yo with a healthy appetite and an almost 1yo who is going through a fat stage it doesn't quite go round....

Linnet · 04/05/2005 21:57

Happy Birthday to Twigletts DD, it is today isn't it? May the 4th be with you?
And belated Happy birthday to Prufrocks ds, hope you all had a great day.

Can I ask a question to the second time around mums. Seeing as dd1 is 7 and it was such a long time ago now, when the babies turn 1 can you start giving them food that has salt in it? For instance if I make soup for us with stock cubes can I give some of that soup to dd2 or should I still be giving her salt free soup? It was so long ago that dd1 turned one I have no idea.

Dd2 has a new word, if she drops something or falls down she says "oh dee" which means oh dear, it's so sweet to hear her saying it.

Her balance today seems to have suddenly improved a lot more. She's walking a lot further without wobbling and falling over. Only problem is she sometimes tries to go to fast and that can cause her to fall over as she trips over her feet. And she won't leave dd1 alone. Dd1 was trying to do her homework tonight and dd2 was right beside her trying to pull away the pencil and the homework sheet. And she follows dd1 everywhere.

Still haven't decided what to get her for her birthday present. But we know that we're getting the caterpillar cake from M&S, yummy.

Gotta run Desperate housewives is about to start, talk again soon.

helsy · 04/05/2005 22:03

Thanks Bozza.
OK, I'm being extra brave - has anyone tried their baby with liver? We're having liver and bacon tomorrow (lamb's liver), and I was going to give dd2 some liver with mash and veg but I don't know if it will be too strong. Annabel Karmel has a 9 - 12 month recipe that uses calves' liver.

We're planning to get dd2 something to sit/ride on for her birthday - with the 80 quid profit we made from a car boot sale on Monday .

Judd · 04/05/2005 22:15

Helsy I would just puree it up and add it to the mash. We haven't done liver with DS yet, but DD definitely had the AK recipe and liked it (except when I defrosted it and added it to pasta (thinking it was bolognese) and called it "meat sauce"!). My ready reckoner tells me that 0.5g of sodium is a lot of salt per 100g and 0.1g per 100g is a little. I haven't actually bothered about it too much. Have home cooked vast majority of food so figured that the odd meal with more than usual in wouldn't do any harm at all.

Judd · 04/05/2005 22:17

Just a quick warning - don't EVER let your DP/DH get a Screwfix catalogue. Apparently there is stuff they need on every page. DH is especially taken by strap on stilts for painting the ceilings, and a flame-proof suit...for no reason at all.
And here's me thinking we're skint........

Twiglett · 04/05/2005 22:17

ahhh baby girl is 1

she's so cute

if anyone is still wondering what to get for their baby, once of the things I got her was these singing dolphins

they are so much fun I'm going to put a couple in my bath

Judd · 04/05/2005 22:18

What do they sing, Twiglett?
Happy birthday DD!

GeorginaA · 04/05/2005 22:20

Linnet: I give stuff with salt now, although I am more careful not to give processed foods mainly because of the very saltiness of it (did you know there's TRHEE GRAMMES of salt in a large tin of spaghetti hoops - only worked that out today!) but more because of the other additive rubbish. Oh, and actively avoid anything sugar free because of aspartame and stuff like that (aspartame makes me wheeze so I dread to think what it does to the kids). I will use stock cubes in our stuff and add a little salt in cooking now for flavour (being sparing though). I really notice the saltiness of processed foods now though, so I'm fairly confident I won't over salt the made from scratch stuff, iyswim.

Bozza: know what you mean about going round!! I'm finding the same!

Ds2 is getting into more bumps and scrapes. Has a lovely scrape across his nose which I have no idea how he got, but he keeps rubbing it and making it worse (not deliberately - he likes to rub his eyes when he's tired, so his nose gets knocked) and as of last night he's got a lovely purple bruise from toppling over and hitting the sink. Helsy - you're so spot on about not visiting A&E just in case so much anymore! With ds1 I'd have been down there like a shot! This time, I just noted that he hollered the place down, didn't seem disorientated later (was playing nicely) and got a nice big fat lump so stuck some homeopathic cream on it.

Personally, I just think he's out to mess up his birthday photos

And in other news, I've just spent the entire evening making a thomas the tank engine costume for ds1 (his nursery is doing a book character day this friday!!) He'd better like it!!!

Twiglett · 04/05/2005 22:20

they each play a different note, so once you clip them in the right order (which I am sure I am going to do as I am slightly anal ) I think you could get them to sing any song within 1 octave

DD was amazed, and kept grabbing them out of the ring and trying to eat them

GeorginaA · 04/05/2005 22:21

OOO.... happy birthday Twigletbabe and Prufrockbabe!

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 04/05/2005 22:23

Well.... ds1 gets processed crap ... meant to say it was ds2 I'm a bit nervous of processed stuff quite yet. Although he is rather partial to a custard cream biscuit

Twiglett · 04/05/2005 22:23

helsy

don't assume that liver is too strong, you can be surprised at what they take to
