Hi girls, thought I would start a new thread as DD2 is one on Thursday .

Can you believe a whole year has passed already?

HM LOL at your little independent DS...I know what you mean. DD2 is v cute but also getting v independent. I do a mix of spoon feeding and finger feeding (I know not BLW as such). She is thankfully a very clean eater like her sister...it must be genetic!
I know people will slate me for this, but I really couldn't cope with all that mess. My days are demanding enough!

Joking aside, the latest version of Christopher Green's 'Toddler Taming' is brilliant.

Big news in the lucky household...DD2 took 3 steps on her own today!!! So she may well be proper walking before her birthday (you've got 2 days DD2....no pressure!)

Still no sign of chicken pox.....

Hi everyone..

HM love the new name, how are you getting on, are you getting much sleep? And how is DS adapting to having to share you?

Baiyu - We had this problem when DD1 was about 16 months old, she kept climbing out of her cot, even though the base was at the lowest position, so we decided to put her into a bed, even though she wasnt really ready but we felt we had no option as it was dangerous for her to be in her cot.
We had a fairly low bed (as the cot turned into a bed) and we didnt bother with a bed guard, just put loads of cushions on the floor next to the bed, a stair gate across her bedroom door, and obviously everything out of reach that she could pull on herself etc - she rarely fell out of bed (we put her right against the wall - and to be fair to her she was a real wriggler in her cot so it was a suprise) and she very soon got used to the change from bed to cot - she did love the whole getting out of bed as soon as you put her in it thing though which was a bit of a nightmare!

I think that if you have a bed guard its more to stop them from falling out, obiously if he is awake its not going to stop him climbing out of bed, and he probably has enough sense at this age to know how yo climb down from the bed? If not, he will soo learn if you show him and he falls a couple of times (on to cushions) he will learn how to climb down safely himself. You may even find that you get more of a lie in if you leave toys for him to play with he might occupy himself for a bit longer in the morning, worked for DD 1 anyway!!

Good luck anyway, let us know how you get on! How is the wedding planning going?

LM - sounds like your having a great time at superbros! enjoy your break!

MM - hope your sister is ok?

Nothing much to report here, DD2 is into EVERYTHING and starting to get quite restless a lot of the time when I have been used to her being very good and just sitting quietly!! She has started waking in the night too and wanting to play, which is a bit annoying!! Think we have some teeth coming though, and they are the last ones (I think) so thats a relief!!

thefortbuilder · 10/08/2009 19:00

just checking in as we're back from holidays in Normandy now

congratulations HM hope you're still doing ok!

will catch up properly later on

big news is that Sam has finally started walking today!

baiyu · 10/08/2009 21:24

Hey all, hooray for first steps Flick!

Thanks so much for all the feedback on my cot dillemma fuzy and LM, really appreciated. We decided, like wth your DDI fuzzy just to go a single bed with bed guard, got one this afternoon, put it up (there was already a single bed in DS's room) and he's been enjoying getting up and down all afternoon and is now asleep there so fingers crossed it works!
I think the reason he's managing to escape it that he's just really tall! Waaay off the height charts still. Our cot has been at the lowest setting for months (it also probably doesnt go quite as low as better quality ones.) It might be a bit early but I'd rather he escaped a lot than ever hear the sound again of small head hiting the floor at speed from the cot!
I've put masses of pillows by the gaps at the top and bottom of the guard and put him to sleep right be the wall. He's really good at climbing up and down from our bed which is quite a bit higher so hopefully he'll be fine. I'll let you know!

Wedding planning going really well, soooo excited about my dress! My best friend is making it - marine blue and gold, never thought i'd be so excited about any item of clothing! The rest os slowly falling into place, no stresses at all yet but they may come still (and probably will!).

Mitchell81 · 11/08/2009 08:25

Baiyu: how did last night go, I would also have suggested putting him in a bed. But it does have the disadvantages of him now being able to get out, but he could do that from a cot so no difference for you.

Flick: congrats on the walking, DS2 also took his first steps last week

Luckymummy: Glad you enjoying your holiday

Fuzzy: Hope DD2 stops wanting to play in the night

Monkeysmama: Glad you enjoyed your holiday

Hope everyone is enjoying the last of the summer holidays. the kids go back in one week up here.

I am trying to decide what to do for DH 40th at the end of the month. Was thinking of going to Dubai for afew nights but it will be Ramadan and 40'c plus so changed my mind. Have babysitters all sorted.

Harimosmummy · 11/08/2009 12:47

Hey guys!

Just a quick check in from me. I have the nanny today, so life in Harimoland is peaceful

Imobo (must think of a better NN for her!) is 14 days old today and I really can't believe how well we have all settled in together. It's like she has been here forever and I'm def. finding a new baby second time round much less stressful (not that Haribo was stressful, but I worried endlessly about everything IYSWIM) LM - You will be glad to know that I've not needed to increase the size of my change bag !!!

Baiyu - that must've been SUCH a scary moment. I think a bed with a guard and lots of pillows is the way to go - esp. as you already have a bed there. I hope the transition goes well! I have the Stokke Sleepi for both of the kids and Haribo has his at the lowest setting which he can't get out of (not for the want of trying!!! ) I'm sure the wedding will throw up some stress before the big day!!!! Your dress sounds gorgeous!

MM - Glad you had a lovely holiday. Hope your sister and her LO are doing OK.

Fuzzy - Gosh, I can empathise with the night-playing.. Haribo was up from 2am till 5am on Sunday night wanting to watch bloody Peppa Pig. I was sorely tempted to give in to him, for the sake of an easy life and a little sleep, but I resisted - THe thought of him wanting to watch it EVERY night was enough to steel my resolve!!! How is your work going now? Have you had any more thoughts about a career change?

Flick - Congratulations on the first steps!!! and thankyou for the lovely gifts you sent... I am in town for 6 week checks (Sans Haribo!) on 11th Sept if you are about? I could come down to you?

Mitchell - The big 40th, eh??!!??! Dubai would be great but I think you are right about the heat and Ramadan means it's probably not the best time to go! I booked Jonathan Palmer's aerodrome for DH's 40th and he took a bunch of his mates in helicopters! It pissed down wasn't the best weather but they had a great day. How about somewhere closer to home? Maybe a night in Edinburgh at the Festival? (I booked my Dsis a couple of days there with her DH for her 40th)

LM - Glad you had a good time at SB's (How is he now? Hoepfully he is shot of that horrid ex) The wedding must be coming up soon?

Well, I'd better go... Just realised how much I've written... How obvious is it I'm not getting out that much

HM xx

luckymummy74 · 11/08/2009 19:47

Baiyu glad you found a solution, maybe I am a bit too precious with my girls . fuzzy's plan sounds good.

HM lovely to hear from you and glad all going well!!! SB is very good thanks. yes, well shot of horrible ex! My sister's wedding is 2 weeks Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!! So excited!

Had a lovely day today, took the girls to the park for a picnic and then they had a sleep so it was ipod time on the balcony . DD1 woke up and I took her to the fair (opposite SB's house, could he be any cooler as an uncle?!). It was great, just me and her, having good quality time, she was v brave and did the log flume and the rollercoaster too!!!

Home tomorrow .

Nice to have a bit more activity on the thread .

Sho x

baiyu · 11/08/2009 22:11

Ooh clever! No words here yet but lots of 'conversation'

Bed going ok, he did end up in with us last night but not til very late. He is having a bit of trouble getting to sleep at the moment but that started before the bed change, it's just a very clingy wee phase I think. Thanks for all the help.

Not to precious at all LM! Rollercoasters sound brill!

Just realised I'm getting married in 7 weeks, eek!

Niknak21 · 11/08/2009 22:23

Congratulations to HM on the new addition, sounds like she's doing really well and DS looks v chuffed with her.

Good to hear about lots of walking and talking.

We have quite speedy walking now, especially when he has his nappy off, or has got hold of something he shouldn't.

LM enjoy the wedding, and Baiyu wow that's coming round fast, hope it's all coming together. We have my SIL's in 3 weeks, and she just phoned tonight to ask my DH to be an usher, nothing like forward planning! Was looking forward to a family wedding with him a bit more by my side, he was best man for his brother, and he's got to pay for his suit £75....

Hope everyone is enjoying their hols, and getting some sunshine

monkeysmama · 12/08/2009 08:08

Congratulations on all the walking & talking. My little monkey never stay still! She's pretty chatty too & wowed our Italian family with a few words when they visited us on holiday. We saw some pigs on holiday & one was laying in the trough & so she likes to say "mai" (trying to say pig in Italian but 3 syllabuls are hard!), oink and shout "go!" while waving her arms to get the pig out the trough. Very cute indeed.

Had lovely holiday. I miss Italy soooo much. Saw my bf who has had awful fertility issues. As soon as she got out of the car I just knew she had good news & is indeed 6 weeks pregnant. I am very pleased.

My sister & LO are ok. Home & well though I've not seen them. I've asked to go over but she's not replied. Guess she's busy.

I am 33 this week. Don't know where the years have gone!?

Hey to everyone.

MM

monkeysmama · 12/08/2009 08:47

Ha ha-forgot a question I wanted to ask....

When dd is doing a poo she says "kaka" & waves her hand in front or her face (mimicking our smelly gesture) & when she wees she pats her nappy to tell me. Seeing as she's aware of what she's doing is it time for me to start thinking about getting a potty or am I way out of my mind!??! I have no idea when they're "supposed" to be out of nappies. I could look inner but it's not important to me iyswim just wondered what you experienced mummies think.

Niknak21 · 12/08/2009 09:51

MM I'd say 15 mnths is a little keen for potty training, but then I had so many problems with DS1, DS2 is going to be kept in nappies til he's 3! I think if she knows it's happening that's great, just go with her. She's a very clever girl . IF you follow what our Mum's did we were mostly all done and dusted by 2? Might be worth buying a potty for the fun element, they make great hats

Harimosmummy · 12/08/2009 12:26

Hi MM...

Sounds like you had a super holiday and great news about your friend... I think you have mentioned her before. I'm glad your sister is OK. It does look as if, whatever the reason, you guys aren't going to be that close. I'm sorry to say that, but I have a feeling it's what you are thinking But... She and the LO are OK...

I think if DD is showing signs of readiness, then it's time to get a potty and start introducing the idea of toilets. Haribo is showing certain signs. He often comes to the loo with me (TMI, I'm sorry, the joy of being on my own with a little one!!!) and he understands that and likes to flush the chain for me.

I'm really thinking of getting him started sooner rather than later.... The 'signs' I've seen so far are:

  1. He knows I flush and wash my hands after being to the loo and he likes to do both of these things when he has his nappy changed.
  2. He is aware of doing 'poop' and likes to be changed immediately
  3. He does not like to wear nappies (he's in pull ups a lot of the time now, as we already have quite a bit of 'control' over the poops)

NIknak - I know all kids are different and I'm far from an expert on the subject, but My DSD2 was in nappies until over 3 (she really should have been dry earlier) and it led to lots of 'separation' issues and anxiety - to the point where she wouldn't go to bed without a nappy on at 4YO even though she was totally in contro of her bladder and didn't need a nappy.

I don't think there is a 'set' age, thought I recently saw pull ups advertised for boysaged8-15 YEARS old I think 15YO is really high time to be dry!!!

HM xx

Harimosmummy · 12/08/2009 12:27

Oh, MM - this will make you laugh: My NN (In RL) is Kaka

Niknak21 · 12/08/2009 18:53

HM according to my GP friend bed wetting is quite common in (mostly) boys into their teens. I just know how stressful it was doing DS1 at 2.5 and I won't be going down that route again. He still wears night time nappies and I'm keeping them at the moment since he can have the occasional wet bed when he has a long afternoon nap. Although my Mum says she didn't have a dirty nappy with me from the age of 1 where I was so regular she could put me on the potty after my breakfast and I would 'perform'.

I do feel there is a lot of Granny pressure though, they all did terry's, stayed in more and life was different, so no wonder we were all dry by 2.

I may do DS2 earlier than 3, he may be a bit more interested since he has his big bro to copy, and he is quite independent, more so than DS1. DS1 is a lazy little darling and loved his nappies .

I have one friend who has tried everything to get her 6 YO DS dry at night, so she's now waiting til he's 7 since that's when the GP can do something about it. But her DD who was 3 in April has been dry day and night since she was just over 2 when she had a bad case of thrush and the nappy needed to go.

It make me think of my favourite saying, you do what's right for your child and your family. And every child and every family is different.

luckymummy74 · 12/08/2009 22:19

MM I did DD1 aged 2 yrs and 2 mths and she got it in 3 days, no accidents after that smug proud mummy!!

I would have done her a bit sooner but I was pg with DD2 and had SPD so didn't fancy chasing her around with a potty! I am planning to start DD2 sooner, but no earlier than about 20 months. It's much easier to do it in the summer too, they can go around bottom half naked and all that washing gets dried quicker!!!

There is a v good book by 'the one we mustn't mention (GF)' on potty training in one week. I followed it for DD1.

potty training book

There is a good list in the book of ten things they should be able to do before you should consider potty training. If too early can end up very stressful for all involved. The book is only a fiver so worth a look.

Great news about your friend being pg!!!

One of my patients is a bed wetting nurse specialist (!!) and it can be to do with a lack of hormone that we normally start producing around the age of 3yrs. They can give a synthetic alternative apparently.

Back from SB's. Had a brilliant time, got a tan as if I have been abroad for a week!!

Niknak21 · 12/08/2009 23:18

LM pleased you have a tan, but you have 2 girls re the potty training. I'm sticking to the boys are lazier theory , and can't bring myself to buy a GF book, could try the library though!

Harimosmummy · 12/08/2009 23:29

Boys are def. lazier IMHO.

DS didn't MOVE until about 4months old.
DD rolled over today - twice (and once infront of MIL, so I have a witness!) and she's 2 weeks old.

Though, I think it's more PC to call boys more contented rather than lazy

It's something that follows them through life

(Can you tell Imobo isn't asleep!!??!!?)

HM x

thefortbuilder · 13/08/2009 10:23

i agree boys ARE LAZY!

we trained ds1 at 2 because he was climbing all over the toilet! we also used GF and he was displaying all the signs for a while before we started.

Don't start too early especially with boys - it can be very frustrating and i have a number of friends who tried at around 18m with girls and then had to leave it till 2yrs. It's a case of them getting it rather than you anticipating when they need to go. And communication needs to be good enough from them to be able to tell you when they need to go to the loo as well.

On the other hand, get a potty - we had one around for about 8 months before ds1 was trained, just so he could sit on it while i went to the loo etc. not that he ever used it properly! went straight for the loo.

talking of talking we have the following words:

Mama
daddy
papa
there (when giving you something)
ta
kiss
brother (brubba!)
moo
woof
quack quack

so pretty happy with that!

Mitchell81 · 13/08/2009 10:46

RE: talking about Pottytraining. I bought the book LM is talking about but for boys (worth a read imo)

DS1 was only ready 2 months before his 3rd birthday and it worked within 2 days. and is now dry during the night and day and is 3.2 years. Tried before for afew days and was definetley not ready. Not had any accidents and doesn't need reminding.

Don't look at other children or ages, decide when you think your child is ready as if they aren't it is only you that will have all the stress of wet clothes, accidents etc.

Niknak21 · 13/08/2009 15:44

Wow flick that's an amazing amount of words, we've had gone, but only now and again. He does do very cute babbling though and looks at you as if you understand. Loving this stage

Harimosmummy · 14/08/2009 17:17

We have

mama
dada
ooog (dog / doofus)
yes
no

We also have the babblinng and he likes to call people on the phone. We are thinking of setting up a web cam so that DH and DS can talk , but haven't gotten around to that.

HM x

Niknak21 · 14/08/2009 18:28

We also have talking on the phone, he's done it for months, I put it down his Mother loving a chat , thinking that, must go and give my Mum a ring!

Had a lovely day at Moors Valley today which is a woodland play place with a play trail and train, nature trail, and train. Not been before properly with DS1. DS2 already in bed and the other knackered fellow won't be far behind. Have a good weekend everyone x

Harimosmummy · 15/08/2009 12:19

yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have unaided walking!!!!!!!!!!! Haribo took his first proper steps this morning!!!

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.
