Yes, puree less so there is some texture to the food. I have given M some veggies with proper bits of rice in and she coped fine by mushing them with her gums. Don't expect Q to be overly impressed at first but he will get used to it. He may gag a fair bit but that is nothing to worry about. I just laugh it off with M then she doesn't get stressed about it. Now she gags, then grins, then gags.......It is important not to stress about gagging or you will scare him and he won't want to eat lumps. Easier said than done I know, but you have to try to stay calm. Gagging is part of learning how to swallow lumpy food.

Myjob - eek! Have you got carpet bugs? Not nice! We have loads of bloody moths again. I went on a kill spree last night, very satisfying. I was trying to get M to do some productive tummy time but no, she just rocked like a seesaw. Re: the diet, it will be ok in a couple of days, I just need to get used to it.

M wasn't too bad last night but it did take three hours to get her down in the first place. She woke up three times but settled herself on one of those occasions. But not before I had woken up, got out of bed and put a cardigan on.

star6 · 28/04/2009 11:24

what are the finger foods you give, myjob?
MM - thanks, I'll try to relax about the gagging
I do put Quinoa in his food sometimes.. he's ok with that, but just swallows it whole as it's so little and slippery and it comes through in his nappy.

star6 · 28/04/2009 11:27

oh and I'm really hoping this no sleep thing doesn't mean he'll crawl... I don't want him to be mobile!!!!!! aahhhhh

Marthasmama · 28/04/2009 11:28

Yes so have we! F*ing things.

heather1980 · 28/04/2009 12:34

can i just say star Q seems to eat a lot of yoghurt. from your post he seems to have it 4 times a day, yoghurt is quite acidic i would only give it once. only my opinion of course.
also a good food to try giving lumps is banana. just mash it with a fork, as it's soft he should be able to gum the lumps.

myjob, we have been invaded by ants yuck, i have to keep the vac plugged in to suck up any food asap. i hate ants.

star6 · 28/04/2009 12:56

he was having a really hard time pooing, so I've stopped giving him a lot of banana, but I might do that, mash it up and give some apple with it. So I've been giving him lots of fruit and yogurt... the yogurt mostly because he just LOVES it. I will cut it back to once a day.
I give him the plum organic fromage frais (no sugar) or just plain, natural organic yogurt without flavouring... he loves that, too (I think it's yuck and sour tasting!). Are either of those still acidic? I feel like I used to know so much about food and now I know nothing!

I'll have to get men in I suppose Myjob. Bugger. We had them last summer but killed them all and nothing until the last couple of days. We are slowly removing all the carpet as we prefer floorboards so that should help in the future I guess.

ronshar · 28/04/2009 14:29

Star I would suggest that you give Q more finger foods to start with. Roast veg is the best place to start as they are so soft and break down really quickly. Avoid bread because it gets sucked into a big lump which often gets stuck. William has found out the hard way as he stuffs it all in as quickly as he can and then goes all red when he has to cough it back out again. I just smile and talk to him until the offending lump is removed from his mouth.
It does seem like a lot of yogurt and not enough carbs/protein. It is the carbs etc that will make him feel more full up. Babies need and children need a high fat diet, obviously not rubbish food but foods that give them the fats they need to grow all there neurons etc. Unfortunatley fruit just doesnt give them enough of what they need.

MM cheer up love.

CSWS. Did you ever watch the house of tiny tearaways? With Dr Tanya Byron? She was fab with sleep probs in all children, for whatever reason. Have you tried to do the rapid return. At your DD's age she will be more than capable of self settling and so needs to be taught to go to sleep on her own.
We have a star chart for DD2. She is gutted when she doesnt get her star at the end of the day. So far mind you she hasnt managed to get stars all week so no treat yet. We might have to make less demanding tasks.

GruffaloMama · 28/04/2009 14:43

Hi - hope it's okay to join.

DS was born 5th October, 8lb 9oz. Long induction and forceps. Least said, soonest mended!

But healthy happy little chap generally - who loves his food and milk. Sitting up really well and just started proper rolling in the last fortnight (he has been a bit lazy on that one as I'm rubbish at putting him on his tummy as it makes him vom).

Am really fed up just now though as he has the evil Chicken Pox. Absolutely covered and very itchy. Has cried more over the past four days than since he was born. And I'm crabby because I can't go out to meet our friends locally as none want the pox - even more grumpy as I thought that b/fing would give him some immunity but he's got a terrible dose anyway.

But am sure this too will pass and just enjoying the cuddles with him as he probably won't let me hug him so much when he's 15...

heather1980 · 28/04/2009 14:56

also fruit is sweet and believe me it will set them up in refusing other foods. you should offer more veg, is Q going to be a veggie too? if not you could also try mince in a tomato based sauce, start off with a small amount of mince and more tomato, the mince is quite small and so he shouldn't choke but it's still quite liquidy iyswim.
here's a veggie recipe that q might like

1/2 chopped onion
100g chopped carrot
15g chopped celery
50g red lentils
200g sweet potato
400ml veg stock
1tbsp oil

fry onion carrot and celery till softened, add lentils and potato, add stock. bring to boil and then simmer for 20 min.
once cooked puree to desired consistancy.

welcome gruffalomama
nice name! my dd is scared of the gruffalo she hids the book under her bed!

gosh we seem to have lots of newbies lately.

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/04/2009 14:59

Welcome GruffaloMama (everyone must get a copy of the Gruffalo for their dc btw - is truly fab book) . Yuk for pox. But at least it will be out of the way, and he's too young to scratch and pick at the spots the way an older child would.

Ronshar - no, never saw that. What's so frustrating is that dd did go to sleep on her own, and had done so for prob close to a year before ds arrived. She has def regressed in a few areas over the last 6 months. Not sure exactly what is involved in rapid return (is that where you take them straight back to bed without saying anything every time they get up, or is it just leaving them for short periods at a time?), but dd would run out of the room ahead of us if we tried to leave, and have huge screaming tantrum when we take her back up. Have a present for her to try and earn, and just need to find where her reward chart is that we used when potty training.

Yuk for moths. Getting rid of carpet sounds like good plan. We only have it on stairs and landing and in nursery now.
How are your new carpets looking hmm? I bet that's why you've waited to wean Poppy really .

star - agree with ronshar and others that more carbs needed now. You could make potato wedges or chips (oven baked) for finger food, or roast parsnip (ds loves this), or fingers of carrot. Or another nice 'mushy once in the mouth' one to try is boiled or steamed baby courgettes - big and grippy enough to hold but very squishable.

Right, must go do some chores whilst ds napping, or it'll be time to pick dd up.

Marthasmama · 28/04/2009 15:43

Ronshar -

Myjob - suddenly got paranoid that I could have sent you carpet moths in a box but I have looked up clothes storage to prevent them and did all the right things. So wasn't me, honest guv. I did have a suddern sick feeling that it might have been me. Eeek!

Ekka · 28/04/2009 16:32

Oh dear, yet again I've read loads & forgotten half of it .

Star - you must be really struggling with that little sleep. I wish I knew a solution (cos then I could make millions out of it ) but its just hit & miss in our household when it comes to sleep!

Welcome gruffalomama - sorry to hear about the pox, its been going round here, but luckily we've avoided it so far. I would like my dcs to get it over with, but ds has such bad eczema & is so itchy anyway that I'd rather we got on top of that first!

MM/Myjob - yuck for carpet moths! I think I'd have to move out if we got them as I am terrified of anything with more than 4 legs..... We've been advised it might be best for our dcs to get rid if carpets (to help M's eczema & their wheezing) - suddenly I think it sounds a great plan .

CSWS - we're trying the rapid return technique with dd, but tbh its not working as quickly as it did on that house of tiny tearaways show...

So M hasn't put on any weight this week . We had our old hv who is just back off maternity leave & she kept asking if I could think of any reason why he might not have put on weight & asking if I was sure the paediatrician wasn't worried about his weight (he's gone from 50th centile at 12 weeks to about 2nd centile at 27 weeks). Grrrrr, she irritates me. He does seem to get very phlegmy (is that a word?) when he eats & has been quite sicky, but not really any more sick than normal I think, so I'm at a loss....

On the plus side we finally booked our holiday to Canada to visit Oma & Opa (dh's parents) but its costing us £2.5k for the flights . Still I'm looking forward to it - they are in Vancouver Island & its so beautiful there.

pepperrabbit · 28/04/2009 17:06

Ekka - do you have to go to the clinic every week if they aren't helping in a constructive way? (Not sure if your paed needs regular formal weighings)?

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/04/2009 17:10

I knew I'd forgotten to say something. Had ds weighed and he came in at 21 lb 9oz I think.

Double phew Myjob. I have been worrying all afternoon! My DS still wants to cuddle his mummy and has been a little bit sad that his baby sister gets more cuddles than him.

CSWS - So that's why he's up all night He's more than 4lbs heavier than M.

Welcome GruffaloMama, yes indeed that book is good, but I prefer the Snail and the Whale

RachieW · 28/04/2009 18:01

Hi all! Dh has worked from home today so I've only just managed to wrestle the computer from him. I've just done what Ekka did, read the posts but forgotten lots.

I'm really interested in all the foods your babies are eating. I'm thinking next week I'll get a bit more adventurous with ds.

HMM I've heard of people using a sieve for making purees, I think it works like my mouli. How did the shopping go?

I took ds to a parent and child group today. I've not ventured into many yet. The majority of children were toddlers but he liked watching them run round. The mum's were all very friendly so I think we'll go again.

Hi GruffaloMama

aubergenie · 28/04/2009 18:27

Well I like Room on the Broom!

Actually I really like the Gruffalo as well. Reminds me of when I was a student teacher in year 2.

Ugh to moths. We've got them too. We don't have carpets, but they're in the kitchen. I don't know how they do it, but the manage to get into unopened packets of food. I thought they'd all gone, but I just found one the other day. Disgusting, horrible things.

Star - have you tried butternut squash or sweet potato? ds loves these. Although I was rather surprised that he chewed his way through a load of (cooked) celery in his stew today. I didn't like celery till I was about 20.

Hello Gruffalomama. Your ds is one day younger than mine!
