Yay!!!!! My (well M's) cloth nappies have arrived!!! I don't know what to do with them, but I know I have to wash them, without softener, before using them. The Bumgenius and the Tots Bots are obvious but the Blueberry two piece is scary and the Itti Bitti is confusing. I'll have to go back on-line to check out what to do.

Lozza70 · 07/05/2009 12:53

Scarey what kind of trouble the babies can get themselves(with our input)into already. Sander has taken one dive headfirst off the bed which scared the life out of me so I alway put him on the floor now. No lasting damage from the bang against the wardrobe and a hug sorted out the tears.

Aubergenie I am a Maclaren queen and bought a Triumph stroller for holidays, flights etc. as I have flown with Sander on my own a few times. It's really light and easy to fold whilst holding a wriggling baby in one arm and has a carry strap so you can sling it over your shoulder to carry to a plane or train. There is a hood but to protect from the sun I used an umbrella as well. I found a buggy good when we were out and about as he could sleep whilst we were having a meal for example.

A question on weaning for those of you on the puree/finger foods combo. Do you only serve protein once in the day? I read somewhere that the babies kidneys are not developed enough to have protein more than once in a day but I don't know what age you can do twice a day.

Marthasmama · 07/05/2009 12:59

Lozza - I tend to give protein at lunch time as it makes the most sense to me. M is up for food enough to take an interest but it's early enough for her to digest it properly before her long (well, I say long....) evening sleep. That is only because I don't want her to have a big meal before bed as I know when I eat a big meal before bed it makes me feel terrible! They are still getting protein in the milk they're having so it's not a big deal if they don;t have much protein in the food we give them. The majority of M's food is fruit and veg, with some complex carbs thrown in. I have opted for complex carbs even though they're meant to have simple at first, because she is still quite backed up.

star6 · 07/05/2009 13:02

so what do you feed her MM?

Marthasmama · 07/05/2009 13:03

Oh and to put the falls into perspective a bit for you......

My brother tipped his high chair over when he was 12 months and hit his head on the side board on the way down. He then fell asleep standing up with his head resting on the sofa. Mum took him to A&E, he was absolutely fine. He fell asleep because the crying wore him out.

DH tipped his baby sister out of her pram on to the grass when she was three months and MIL dropped her from hip height on to her head on a concrete floor when she was 6 months old. She has a first class masters in biochemistry and was absolutely fine on both occasions.

Ekka · 07/05/2009 13:03

I just discovered that all the chocolate that is dairy free does contain soya - NOOOOOOOO .

This might be why ds is still suffering from his eczema

Pepper & Hmm - how awful for you with the bumps to your lo's.

Whoever it was wanting a carrier with skulls on(?) maybe you should get this to go with it! Was it aubergenie???

Aubergenie - I am impressed how you managed not to panic in the choking situation. I have given ds some finger foods and have been calmer than with dd, but though in many ways I love the idea of blw, I just can't cope with the gagging/choking part! Though he did enjoy a sliver of avocado yesterday once he worked out he was supposed to put it in his mouth not just wave it at me/hit himself over the head with it

I have discovered the one advantage of this dairy/soya/egg free diet - I've lost 4lbs since starting it mainly because I can't have any naughty treats (unless I go to the bother of cooking them). Knew there had to be some benefits

star6 · 07/05/2009 13:17

I weighed myself this morning. 113 lbs. I was 115 pre pregnancy and 123 at my heaviest during pregnancy. What I don't get is that I feel like I've got a lot more fat than pre pregnancy but I'm lighter? I'm also wondering if this is true - someone told me that when I stop bf, fat stores go away... is that true? Or should I work at toning up now? or no point and just wait until Q is finished bf? 1 year or maybe a little more....

Ekka - How about these?

Star - [env y] - Can you tell I'm jealous? I wish I was that light. I found that I lost weight once I stopped bfing ds but it's not the case with everyone. How tall are you? Unless you're as titchy as Myjob and I, you are already on the skinny side.

Myjob - You're talking Greek again woman.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/05/2009 14:01

Just a quick sign in to mark my place really.

Re protein - I don't actually check how often I give it. He doesn't consume much meat yet, and has only had egg a couple of times so far, and obv no dairy, so I guess his protein is mostly coming from beans and the like, which wouldn't be more than once a day I guess.

DD fell off a toy box onto her head when she was a baby/young toddler. She cried lots, and it was bruised and lumpy for a while, but apparently medics are only concerned (unless sick or unconscious) if the fall is from more than twice the height of the child.

aubergenie - yes, have teething necklace now. No idea if it's helping or not, but it's certainly not harming! Wish he could wear it at night really when teething is at its worst.

Talking of scary bumps an dknocks, one occasion with DS1 springs to mind.

I can't remember exactly how old he was, about 1 maybe? Anyway, we were having lunch with a friend and he was sat in a booster seat strapped to a dining chair and pushed up to a table. He decided to push himslef away form the table and instead of sliding back, the chair, complete with DS attached, flew over backwards. It was awful, I was on the other side of the kitchen and could almost see in slow motion what was going to happen, but I couldn't get there in time to catch him. Luckily the chair had a high back so it was that that hit the floor first not DS's head, but it was really scary.

So the moral of the story, BE CAREFUL with those booster seats. He used to push himself away from the table all the time in his highchair, ubt it was stable enogh just to slide back. Dining chairs aren't.

On the plus side, touch wood, I haven't done anything too horrendous to Ed yet. I think I've clonked his head once or twice getting him in and out of the car, but that's about it.

Ds1 though, over the years has:
Fallen off the sofa age 6 wks (DH's fault)
The above booster chair incident
Fallen down the stairs from top to bottom
Fallen off the changing table
Very nearly fallen overboard into the Solent.

Yet, amazingly enough, he's still alive to tell the tale

Awww myjob - I like being titchy and I can't reach the top kitchen cupboards either. When we finally get our kitchen done we are going only have low level cupboards. There are fleece liners with them. I think that's what they are. I'm washing them now so I'll check later.

Aubergenie - Have you seen the advert.......It starts next week, yay!!!!!

I'm 5ft. 2 and a half inches. (need that half inch!!). yes, gained 8 lb during pregnancy... I was worried the whole time b/c everyone kept saying... the placenta weighs this much, the fluid weighs this much... blah blah blah and I kept thinking... well, what does my baby weigh?? nothing?? I was very shocked that he came out at 5lbs 15!

aubergenie · 07/05/2009 14:30

MM- With the itti bitti nappies you just pop the inserts on to the same coloured poppers, so (in the large size, your colours might be different) purple to purple, yellow to yellow. Make sure the wider one is at the bottom, folded into 3 and the narrower one on the top, then stick a liner (paper or fleece) on top of that. if you do get on with them, you can buy extra liners and reuse the outers if they're not actually dirty.

Myjob - I might give fleece liners a try. Our toilet doesn't deal very well with those flushable ones. Do you also use cloth at night?

Lozza that Triumph stroller looks good. Loads on Ebay as well.

I've got so much to do and just can't get motivated today. DP was here, driving me mad this morning. I took S out of the room to do something, came back in to find he'd tidied his blanket and all his toys away . I'm not sure how he thought I was going to entertain S for the rest of the day.

Star - Someone told me that you keep a store of fat on your hips while you're breastfeeding. I've found that I've lost lots of weight recently, but still have a good amount of padding left there. I wonder if it'll drop off when I stop?

Marthasmama · 07/05/2009 14:30

Yeah if/when we sell the place in Spain. We are extending out about 4ms and adding a downstairs bathroom so we will have a good family kitchen. At the moment two people can just about avoid falling over each other in there!

Well you have been chatty

Cant remember sho said what!

aubergenie re ebaying! Some stuff goes well and it is free to list under a pound. I am just re listing what I have not sold. If it is good quality it usually geos ok, next stuff goes well and anything that looks clean and tidy.

Pepper Its horrible when they fall but it makes you not leave them again. I did it with DD1 on the bed once and she clonked her head on the way down on the chest of drawers, I was currently having a wee and never rememebr if I actually finished that wee, just heard clonk and ran! she was fine but I never left her on it again!

Well if we do meet up then I will not be standing next to you shorties I am 5 10!

mm jealous re your kitchen, we want ours done with shower room and laundry room off it but DH needs to finish every thing else first, may put my application in to DIY SOS

Lozza70 · 07/05/2009 15:37

Oh god not even going to go there on weight gained (and not lost)in pregnancy I have a 20 year school reunion in July and am feeling like a huge lump compared to our 10 year reunion. I will have to dazzle with hair, make up and glam outfit so nobody notices how much I weigh

heather1980 · 07/05/2009 16:10

we still use pampers at night too, he is such a heavy wetter, i'd have to do some serious boosting at night.

alex has developed this really painful habit of grabbing my breast and digging his nails in or pinching me when he's feeding. i can't seem to cut his nails short enough to stop it and it's really sore when he does it. argg.

we found a swans egg on our front lawn this morning. i rang the rspca and they said to throw it in the bin as the chick inside was prob dead it was huge, but it felt cruel to do that so i buried it in a little grave.

heather1980 · 07/05/2009 16:13

oh and as to weight gain, i've gained 4 stone since i've had kids! i used to be a tiny size 8-10 alas no more, i'm a 16-18 now and i hate it, but i find i'm so hungry feeding alex that i just stuff myself with crap.
i hope that when i stop feeding that i'll lose the weight. i plan to be a milf when the kids go to school!

Marthasmama · 07/05/2009 16:57

Heather - I was originally a size 8 then had ds and was a size 16 afterwards, then when he was two, I was a size 4 (and was too thin really) then put on weight as I was miserable in my job, then got pg when I was about a 10/12. Now I'm a 16 again. I'm feel very grumpy about it as none of my clothes fit and I am totally sick of it. I'm not particularly hungry but I haven't been able to eat properly with DH away so I've put on some weight. We are diet house as of Saturday as DH has put on a few pounds too. So I completely feel your pain. And M pinches & scratches my face or grabs a big chunk of my boob and pulls it until my nipple pops out of her mouth then she latches back on. Playing a 'fun' little game.

Jenwa - I bloody love DIY SOS. It's so funny.

Star - In that case you're borderline under weight, but that depends on your build. If you're small then you're bang on and you should NOT lose any more weight!
