hello, got here at last Beansprout !! This is my first time in the post natal group. My dd was born on 25th Oct and the last 6 months has really flown by. So far she is doing well with her solids, she hasn't rejected anything yet, think she takes after her dad, liking her food so much . Have to try out the sunlight experiment on her bibs though, as they have got lovely stains on them. She is still on fruit and veggies, haven't braved the meat yet

CoveredInDribble · 06/05/2005 11:25

Thanks Maisiemog, will just wait until ds realises what he's missing - df wolfs down my cooking .. but then he can't cook, so it's eat what he's given or starve ... hmm. Anyhow, can't believe ds is going to be 7 months old on monday!! It's flown by!

docket · 06/05/2005 12:05

hi everyone

CoveredinDribble - great name!

MM how you doing with the pilates? I think I tried one of her DVDs but gave up with it very quickly due to a) her incredibly patronising voice and b) the slowness of it all. But I'm told it works wonders on flabby tummies so is perhaps worth a revisit!

ds eats like a trojan but am finding this whole weaning thing a real faff and i feel a bit clueless about it all. am thinking about introducing some meat soonish but am not sure what to do with it. so to those who have done the meat thing: how do you cook it? do you use oil to cook it in? presume you can then just blend with veg etc? aaaagh!

Thanks to everyone for bottle tips, still no joy (health visitor told me grimly that he WILL take it) but am going to persevere.

biglips · 06/05/2005 12:18

docket - ive started Aquafit and i love it and my belly feels very weird (i had a emergency c-section), also do pilates (when i remember) and also ive got Angela Griffins Dancemix workout, it really good as feel full of energy once finished (panting like a dog that had been running!! )

about the weaning, eg i grilled the meat, and boil the vegs, chop up the well cooked meat into bits and use a bit of hot water from the vegs to blend the meat (ive got a hand blender and i use a cup that is the exact same width as the blender, it takes a while as you may need to put a bit of more water) the meat should look like very shredded. Do the same with the vegs in a separate cup and the vegs puree easy, put the meat in with the vegs and blend it till all pureed and pour it into baba's bowl...its ready to be served

biglips · 06/05/2005 12:20

also baba loves toast with abit of jam on it (as its finger foods) and she wolfed that down

and also baba is not really keen on the vegs as poss strong flavours for her, use more of the meat/ potato than vegs

CoveredInDribble · 06/05/2005 12:36

Thanks Dockets - I should really be CoveredInDriblleAndSnot today though, cos ds has a really runny nose - I blame df who had "man-flu" (err, just a mild cold if you ask me!) last week. Unfortunately ds is a real little boy who screams if I try to wipe his nose and would rather use his sleeve. Ho hum!

Ds ate quite a bit at lunch today, but we're still struggling to get him to drink anything other than milk (he's on formula now) and I'm worried he'll start getting constipated as he eats more - does anyone have any tips on getting him to drink water, or is it just sheer perseverance?

Granuaile · 06/05/2005 12:47

my dd is not too keen on water either Coveredindribble, but we just persevered, sorry no weird and wonderful tips !! We give it to her in a cup with every meal and she has gradually began to take a little more, ( little being the word )

CoveredInDribble · 06/05/2005 13:04

We'll persevere then! We've tried putting water in his bottle, as we know he is fine with his bottles, and we've also tried a couple of different cups - he's happy to play with the cups, fling them around, bash them, chew the spouts, but as soon as any water comes out, he pulls a face and looks thoroughly unimpressed!

geogteach · 06/05/2005 13:32

Having smuggly got DS off the breast now think he is lactulose intolerant, he is really constipated and being a bit sick. Unlike my other kids he does drink water and he has only had fruit, veg and yoghurt so don't think its the food - DR has refered him to a pead but we're off on holiday next week so I have a prescription for lactulose.
Does everyone use long sleeved bibs, I have found that these are the best for keeping food off the clothes and they are usually bright colours so ant stains are hidden!

geogteach · 06/05/2005 13:33

Sorry that should be lactose intolerent

Maisiemog · 06/05/2005 14:23

Dribble, I was thinking this morning, how I refer to when Pog 'was a baby' to other people, and they look at me as if I'm mad . It's funny how the time goes by and you start thinking that they're not 'little babies' anymore.
I tell Pog, 'stop being a baby!'
Pog - Huh!?

CoveredInDribble · 06/05/2005 14:59

Geotech, we couldn't survive without our bibs-with-arms - ds likes to "help" with the spoon, so he ends up with it all over his sleeves as well as his face and down his font, as he insists on grabbing the spoon right where the food is rather than up the handle!

Masiemog - sometimes our ds has grown-up days where he always wants to sit up, and have all his bottles sitting up, and sometimes he has "baby" days where he wants more cuddles, and wants to be held and snuggled whilst he has his bottles! I agree, we think other people think we're bonkers seeing as ds is not quite seven months, but then, df does say it feels like waaaaaay longer than that (in a nice way!).

docket · 06/05/2005 17:56

Biglips, thanks for the meat info!

Bellie · 06/05/2005 21:38

With you on the long sleeve bibs! Hope you have a great holiday geogteach - going anywhere nice? .
Biglips thanks for the tips on meat - will be trying it out next week - all the recipies that I have call for homemade chicken stock so pleased to see that you just use water! Not looking forward to the nappies though - thanks for the warning Maisiemog.
Geogteach - sorry to hear about ds lactose intolerance - will this mean more hospital trips??

NannyJo · 06/05/2005 21:43

hi all sorry to gate crash but my ds was an october baby (meant to be november but came a month early)

could i ask a quick question on their feeding???

Does anyone use tomatoes direct from the tin or do you fiddle with the fresh ones de-skinning de0seeding etc??

Do you fry up mince in a little oil?? (want to make a pasta bolognaise this weekend)

Thank you, any advice greatly appreciated.

cazzybabs · 06/05/2005 21:52

Grace the greedy girl has had thirds of her dinner today - she astounds everyone with how much she eats. She is currectly rolling around on the floor and eating my shoe - NICE. Can't believe she is nearly 7 months - Why won't time stand still.
We have dd1[s 3rd party tomorrow - have paronia no one will come. have spend the last couple of nights crying worrying that she has no friends. Its just whenever I try and organise anything it always ends in disaster.

Am very tired at the mo because I am working full time. Me and Grace keep falling asleep in bed togther at about 9.30 and then she gets very cross when dp wakes her up to change her nappy before bed.

Biglips - hows your mum. Has she gone back to France yet?
Jbadgirl - hows your ds getting on? How is work?
Rickman - where are you? You havn't poseted on here for a few days?
Beansprout - how are things with your dp and the maternance payments?

Hello to everyone else and I am sorry if I forgetton anyone.

cazzybabs · 06/05/2005 21:53

Nannnyjo - have always used whole fresh toms - skins, seeds and all. Think I fried things in a tiny bit of oil or else found meat that didn't need frying and grilled it.

Maisiemog · 06/05/2005 22:10

NannyJo SNAP - me too! Mine was supposed to be arriving November 18th, but came on Halloween Woooh!
Mince: I did fry up some mince and onions in grapeseed oil (I read that olive oil isn't good for babies?) and then put in cooked tatties and some grated carrot and let it all cook for about 10 mins. Then Whizz with the hand blender - ds loved it. MMMMM! He said.
Tomatoes, I was avoiding, because I thought they often caused allergies, but ds had some today. MMMMMM! he said and he hasn't gone bright red. I suppose you could sling some in as well.

Rickman - i think you are amazing. i find it hard enough to cope with 2 kids when dp is away on businness.

Maisiemog · 07/05/2005 13:44

Rickman, respect to you. I am in total awe. I am so tired with one baby and lots of help, and my baby doesn't even breakdance??
I'm bone idle you see.
Not very good last night. Pog skipped a meal and was hungry all night - I thought he was teething. NO! He was hungry! He woke up at 4am 6:30am 8:30am then 9:30 and 10:40. I went to bed at 1 and I was hoping for a lie-in. Huh!
We went to John Lewis yesterday and got a free jar of baby food in the restaurant - check it out!! Chicken and fruit. It said on the jar 'from 4 months'. I didn't think you could give four month old babies meat? . I'll just buy Pog a burger then!

Maisiemog · 07/05/2005 14:05

Oh and we weighed Pog on the scales at Lewis' - dp got on the scale then I handed him Pog (funny looks from the sales assistants) so it's a bit approximate. We think he weighs about 19lbs? So that's alright considering he started off at 5lbs 8ozs (aaah! Teeny tiny bums!). He loved that chicken and fruit thing a Lewis'. It contained chicken, tatties, tomatoes and raisins? - recipe idea? Use up those old raisins - don't actually have to eat it yourself!

beansprout · 07/05/2005 15:12

Jbadgirl - hope things are ok
CB - things are ok thanks. CSA didn't stripe us so we live to fight another day. Onwards and well, onwards...

Ds is still absolutely refusing solids and is still on a 100% milk diet so please indulge me when he does finally eat a bit of mush. Cooking for him feels like a million miles away! Rickman - he can do a bit of belly spinning as well!

geogteach · 07/05/2005 19:53

Bellie we're off to sunny ( i hope) Spain. My M in L has an apartment there, so DS1 can practice his Spanish. Yes we will be having more hosp appointments for DS2 I still think Beans idea for reward points would be fabulous!
Went to my first (non baby) yoga class since having DS2 this week, quite nice to be out on my own.
On the food front i've just got lazy if he wants orange coloured food made by hipp organic he can have it for now. I figure he'll be trying something else when he goes to the nursery, can't believe i'm going back to the world of the grown ups (well teenagers at least) in less than a month.

florenceuk · 07/05/2005 22:49

Well, beansprout, my DD is still terribly hit and miss with solids - although my childminder got broccoli down her yesterday, I failed today. I'm sure DS was more enthusiastic than this! She is still very cute, even when she is dribbling pumpkin and rice puree down her chin and bubbling it back out of her mouth. Maisiemog, I'm very impressed with your DS's wide-ranging diet!

Rickman, I think you're doing a fantastic job managing with four on your own, and please don't feel guilty.

Cazzybabs, how did hte party go?
