Hi there

MM if it's Dengue (sp!) Fever then that's like a really bad malaria type thing that you get in the tropics etc from mosquitos and you'd need to get medical attention asap. I think. My memory is not what it used to be!

Eating going well here but bottle feeding still a disaster zone. Very depressing.

Maisiemog · 04/05/2005 13:04

Docket, I don't think my brother was serious, Pog hasn't been out of Scotland, let alone into the tropics (or he hasn't told me if he has )

Maisiemog · 04/05/2005 13:11

Docket, have you tried a feeding cup? Those babies!! They're just so stubborn!!! The timing of these things seems to be important, like if they're in the right mood with the right person they might consider being helpful. Good luck!

biglips · 04/05/2005 13:19

maisie - my baba cant sit up unaided too, as only sits up for couple of seconds and then toppled over. Baba had been trying to crawl on the carpet this morning whilst i was doing my dance workout and sits up (im trying!!) and baba was licking the carpet again - i said to DP "throw the carpet cleaner out, we have got one here now which is alot easier to use" .... i give baba her spoon and bowl and she loves making noises with them as she gonna be a DJ (oh no! )

docket · 04/05/2005 13:20

aaaah - i am a muppet! whoops i'm a bit slow these days !

yes, have tried several varieties of cup too! spurned all of them.

beansprout · 04/05/2005 14:54

Bean can sit for a while unaided, but then topples (which looks quite funny tbh). I think a lot of adults can't sit up from lying (not without using their arms), although ds does try. Again, quite funny.

I don't spent the whole day just laughing at my baby trying to do things btw

Maisiemog · 04/05/2005 18:20

Haha! They are funny though.
I was blending some rice and prunes [poo!] for Pog and he kept screaming - high pitched and then hiding his face then looking again and screaming. It was funny. He's like a my new small friend person.
I don't think he likes sitting up, it's like 'what's the point of this?!' Thud!

geogteach · 04/05/2005 19:32

Docket you've probably tried it but is the milk hotter than you think is sensible? That is the only thing that got my DD to drink from a bottle.
Bean stick with it on food DS2 has only got into it this week, after about 4 weeks of trying, now polishes off whole jars off hipp baby food, very choosey though won't contemplate other brands or my cooking. Tried a chip today but that seemed a bit ambitious judging by the coughing fit that followed.

CoveredInDribble · 04/05/2005 19:59

HI all, am new to mumsnet but I have a ds born Oct '04, so can I join you? We're also undergoing the joys of weaning. Ds is currently refusing anything I cook - I was starting to take it personally, but df has a theory that it's cos our blender doesn't make stuff as smooth as the shop bought jars, so we're using them for the meantime and hoping as he gets older he'll come round!

jbadgirl · 04/05/2005 21:03

Well work isnt too bad after a day and a half! Ds has done really well and i am so pleased with him.

Had an app with the development consultant today and ds hasnt really improved in 3 months and they said he has very poor vision. Still waiting for a referal to see a neurologist and then we may know more.

Hello coveredindribble x when was your ds born?
We are doing even better with the solids (after our short stay in hospital) but his milk intake has gone down loads. He is still gaining weight nicely so im not too worried.

biglips · 04/05/2005 21:30

jbad - sorry for me forgetting!! but was your baba born early or is it genetics or wha?

welcome to Coveredindribble.... about the blender, it can take a while to really blend stuff into puree - keep trying and BTW Icelands are doing a sale atm as all jars are 25p each and powders foods are £1.00 (all Cow & Gate)

ive worked it out with baba that she quite like the bland-ish taste foods and not too strong flavours foods so maybe if you try make it more blander!!!! thats my guess!

biglips · 04/05/2005 21:38

i feel really bad today as baba had a fall alst night in her walker coz me and DP had been to the college and i was giving my friend (who babysat) a lift home. she gonna left the vestibule door open and there is a step before you open the front door... Dp went to get a milk bottle from kitchen and he didnt realised that my friend had left the door open, baba went flying forward banged her forehead a bit (although no bruise on her forehead now) but state of her nose, i think she had scraped her nose on the carpet where it had burned in a small fire (about the size of a small palm hand, it happened before i moved in)... ive been shopping today and everyone was staring at poor baba's nose as its all scratched and red i felt so bad for leaving her last night

florenceuk · 04/05/2005 22:43

biglips, I left the living room door open when I was five and my baby sister (was in a walker) fell down the stairs - cue lots of screaming and a big telling off for me. I've been emotionally scarred for life since then re walkers!

Maisiemog · 05/05/2005 11:21

Hi Covered in Dribble, know how you feel! I have a little boy: Pog who was born early on October 31st. Not so little now. Have you had any sleep in the past 6 months?

Maisiemog · 05/05/2005 11:43

Dribble, we have been using a Bosch handblender/little blender combo.
This is it on Amazon:
I find the best way to get things smoother is to add more liquid to the mixture and to continuously stop, scrape the stuff from round the edge and start again. To be honest I think Pog is eating quite lumpy stuff, because it is so hard to get things really smooth.
I just rationalise and tell myself that when I eat, I don't chew until the food is powder, so tummies can handle small lumps.
A thought - Maybe the whole appetite thing is genetic, I mean Pog's daddy will eat almost anything (except lamb hearts), so Pog's like him. I'm a bit fussier, but I eat like a horse. We're both big muscley people (dp weighs 17.5 stone and lifts weights, I probably weigh around anything from 10.5 to 11 stone and am not overweight) - we both get super hungry. Pog looks pretty stocky, so I reckon he needs lots of food. , but babies are all shapes and sizes, and I wouldn't have thought they would all eat the same amount or need the same number of calories - even though the HV thinks they do.
What do you reckon?

hotmama · 05/05/2005 12:19

Haven't posted on this thread for a while so I thought I would drop back in. DD was born on 5th Oct so is 7 months today!

Maisiemog - I think that babies must have differing needs like adults do - and some are more chunkier than others.

I posted on the follow on milk thread about dd who isn't a hungry baby and although I don't have to actually force solids down her - really isn't that bothered after the first few mouthfuls - and dd is 20lbs 6ozs at 30 weeks. Have friends whose babes are older and scoff all the time and are much 'thinner'.

CoveredInDribble · 05/05/2005 12:58

Hi everyone! Ds was born October 9th, and, please don't hate me, but he's been sleeping right through the night from about 8 weeks old, bar a slight hiccup at 4 months old - we feel very lucky indeed!!

Maisiemog · 05/05/2005 13:58

Lucky you!
Pog was a teeny tiny little baby, and he needed a lot of little teeny feeds for ages. PLUS he's an insomniac, chronic stayer up later - like his mum and dad. He's actually sleeping looooong now. From 1:30ish at night until about 12 in the afternoon. How odd it is!!

CoveredInDribble · 05/05/2005 15:17

Ds was huge - 9lb 6oz (ouch!) with an appetite to match, so for the first few weeks, it felt like all I did was feed him - am soooo glad he calmed down a bit, although still following the 91% line on his weight chart - crazy!

bibiboo · 05/05/2005 17:15

Hi all,
Just caught up on the weaning troubles - we didn't have any probs as such. Maybe your dbs don't like the spoons, not the food..? Before I weaned dd, I gave her a spoon to hold and chew on for a couple of days so she got used to the texture in her mouth and she only every rejected baby rice...fair enough I say, it is vile.
Hope that helps,
x

huppa · 05/05/2005 19:14

My ds seems to love the spoon more than the food. He clamps his gums shut on it and I can´t get it out of his mouth - then again maybe it´s just his strategy to prevent me getting any more food in.
By the way I can now confirm that sunlight does remove carrot stains from clothes, so thanks for the tip.

CoveredInDribble · 05/05/2005 20:23

Maisiemog, thanks for the link - will try adding more liquid when blending and see how it goes! TBH, at the moment, I'm just happy that he is now starting to eat more than he ends up wearing, it's just frustrating that I try to cook for him myself, only to have it shunned in favour of Cow & Gate!

biglips · 05/05/2005 21:04

well baba had lamb chop and vegs for tea !! (it was pureed of course!)

Bellie · 05/05/2005 21:24

Hi all, been catching up on all your weaning stories - we don't seem to have that problem - more an issue in terms of amounts - dd seems to just want more and more! Am going to move onto meat next week and see what happens there..Worth knowing about the sunlight huppa!

Maisiemog · 05/05/2005 23:22

Bellie, Pog has had minced baby cottage pie once (like a tiny cottage ) and tuna twice. THE NAPPIES FROM HELL!! Good luck!
How do you decide how much to give your lo?
Dribble, you will just have to wait for your baby to become a sophisticated gastronome and appreciate your food.
