Ds1 has a temp of 39.7, been told by NHS to keep him with me tonight, and call back in an hour if no imporvement and they'll send doc. If still bad through the night to take him to hospital. His last 2 teeth are coming down so hopefully just that, but in for another night....As long as he's ok and this temp drops though. He's had it since 3am

herbgarden · 08/04/2009 19:38

LBB just to let you know that DS had a temp virus last week and was really hot on and off all week and really not himself...it culminated on Friday night in getting really sweaty in his sleep and me having to strip him down and change all his clothes and sleeping bag....it took about 4 /5 days for it to go but after the sweaty incident it seemed to go away. I know it's been going round so maybe that ??...I didn't take his temp as I didn't have a thermometer (got one today!).

herbgarden · 08/04/2009 19:39

PS - have you given Calpol/Ibruprofen ? - I alternated the two during the day not exceeding the dose to keep the temp down.

dinkystinky · 08/04/2009 20:04

LBB - your poor DS1 I echo Herbgarden on the alternating calpol and nurofen infants every 2 hours - also give DS1 lots of fluids, try luke warm sponge baths for him to get the temperature down if need be, and try and keep him comfortable. I hope his temperature has peaked and he gets better soon.

LBB - hope tonight is okay and that DS1 improves.

Well, a nice suprise here in that both children were bathed and in bed by 7.15pm!! I've had to go up to Sam a couple of times but no screaming from him like the last couple of weeks... mind you it's only 8pm, anything could happen! Could it be tyhe bottles? Maybe it was the bath, massage and song.... who knows!

MrsY - I was going to post on the sleep topic about that. In my Contented Baby Book it suggests that at 6-8 weeks daytime naps ahould total about 4 hours . As you saw yesterday Sam sleeps most of the day. I reckon he has a total of 5 hours awake during the day, max. These worries aren't just for first timers!!! PS hope you back is a little better?

Dinky - it made me laugh reading about your DS and his cardboard boxes! Hope tomorrow brings good news on the potty subject!

Well, it's time to tuck into the lamb casserole that's been bubbling away in the slow cooker all day - beats a bowl of cereal!

dinkystinky · 08/04/2009 20:43

Hurrah - long may peace reign in the STW household! Now get yourself to bed STW and enjoy some lovely sleep...

MrsY - I totally missed the bit in your post about your back. Poor you! Thank god for your mum being able to help out. Is your back better now? What a time for it to go...

He's seems to have cooled down now. He is sleeping soundly and his body feels cool to the touch. I was giving calpol and nurofen alternate 2 hourly to control temp but they told me on nhs direct that that's not really a good idea as it means the body can't fight infection. I have both bottles handy for the night though and we have a cupof water for him in thre too.

MrsY I missed about your back too. Hope you feel better soon. x

MrsY · 08/04/2009 21:56

I'm lying on the floor in the dining room (only room I can find floor space!!) trying to watch The Apprentice through the door way! My back huuuuuurts! I think I've overdosed on co-codamol and ibruprofen! Lucky John is off tomorrow and Thursday and my Mum is coming back to look after me on Saturday - she got a bit of a bollocking from her boss for taking the day off, so feel really guilty, but apparently she gave as good as she got !!!!!

And I just burnt my tongue on my stoup...

BTW THOM did you hear Chris Evans do the chocolate mug cake as a cook-along on his show earlier - I reckon his wife is a mn'er - and she had her baby same day as me and Dinky, she might be one of us...

KT1983 · 09/04/2009 07:41

Horrible horrible few days....
Poppys reflux has just reappeared! She has been fine for a good few weeks, since the Gaviscon. but last few dys, every feed has been coming back up again. I feel so bad for her. I dont know what to do. It seems like she is not eating anything now?
She is always sicking on her fingers, but when I try feed her she takes about 1oz and falls asleep. She is really grunty at the moment & really unhappy.
After a sick episode last night we put her back to bed in her room....an hour later the bloody sensor alarm sounds!!
Its never done it before, it only goes off if it doesnt detect breathing/movement for 20seconds. After that happened, I couldnt sleep. I almost had a heart attack, i ran in her room faster than the speed of light & scooped her up & she was fine, but startled. I felt sick when I heard the alarm. It was just awful.
Do any of you have one ofthese alarms?
Im so worried about her, going to try get to the doctors today

littleboyblue · 09/04/2009 08:18

KT How awful. My blood ran cold when I raed the alarm went off! Thank God she is ok, that must have been by far the scariest moment of your life.
FWIW, both mine seem to hold their breath a bit, Luke does it if he has a big windy pain in his belly, almost like he can't push through the pain and breathe at the same time iyswim.
Also with the reflux, this is one of the reasons I wasn't happy with the gaviscon and got them to treat ds1 at a higher level. Go back to your gp and say gaviscon is no longer working and find out what else they can do. Although, it may be a little bug she has.
What size teats are you using? If she is falling asleep after so little, it may be that the teat is too small and she's tiring herself out trying to get the milk out.

littleboyblue · 09/04/2009 08:21

Ds1's temp has been up and down all night. I'm going to take him to the doc's today, he feels really hot but is shivering, so that's fever isn't it?

KT1983 · 09/04/2009 08:26

Lbb - thats a very good point. We are still using size 1 teats. you could have well hit the nail on the head there. I might go and buy the next size up. Is it medium flow or variable flow? Or does tommee tippee just do a number 2?

I am going to be a little bit sterner with the GP this morning. Last time, he just fobbed me off with the Gaviscon when I told him I wasnt happy about giving it to her all the time. Sometimes they are just not helpful are they?!

The alarm sounding was definatly the most scariest moment ever. I cuddled her for about 45mins and myheart was still racing!! Makes me shudder thinking about it.

KT1983 · 09/04/2009 08:27

ah, your poor Ds Lbb. Its hard work all this worrying isnt it?
If he is hot & shivering, thats defo a fever. Id take him to the docs.

littleboyblue · 09/04/2009 08:31

Don't know about tommee tippee teats, but def get a bigger size.
The gp fobbed you off with gaviscon because anything else is too expensive for them, especially as you're not paying for prescriptions.
Also, I'm sure the gp can prescribe anything, but if he starts taling about seeing a paed, make sure he daes it, remember, the gp surgeries have to pay when they refer you to the hospitals now, so another reason for fobbing off. This is why I had to arrange my own dating scan 5 weeks after a m/c.

LittleMissNorty · 09/04/2009 08:33

Medium flow teats are the way to go IME - I hate variable flow and DD found them really difficult. I started DS on medium flow and just chucked the slow flow away. By the time we get to 5 months-ish, I expect we'll be on fast flow. Hope you get the reflux sorted. In my local Boots, they do SMA in a purple tin for babies that have reflux....don't know if it works....

LBB - hope DS1 is OK. Babies with fevers are horrible. DD also had a virus last week...so don't be surprised if a viral rash comes out....then DS2 will probably get it....at least he is old enough for calpol now. Ibruprofen is 3 months I think.

KT1983 · 09/04/2009 08:34

Thats bloody awful Lbb.
someone remind me why we pay Tax & NI when some doctors are just so bloody rubbish!!!

KT1983 · 09/04/2009 08:36

Got a 10am appointment - Best get us up & sorted.
Hope your Ds1 gets a little better lbb

Am also going to stop at Asda & get some bigger teats. Thanks LMN.

littleboyblue · 09/04/2009 08:39

Thanks LMN KT When I went to gp to tell her I'd m/c and asked if I needed a scan to make sure everything had passed, she said no on account of my m/c history, I'd know if there was something left but 5 weeks later I still felt 'odd' so did a pregnancy test that was positive, so back to gp, who had trouble understanding what I was saying, I also thought there may be a possibility that preg was multiple and I'd lost one and he other survived iyswim, it's happened to a few people in my family. So she told me to arrange a scan as it would be quicker if I did it myself , the EPU refused self referal, the gp refused to refer, so I was creating for days to both clinics.
Utter crap!

dinkystinky · 09/04/2009 09:13

LBB - sorry to hear DS1 is still ill; hope the GP sees him soon today. And cant believe how awful they were after your m/c! That's the kind of thing that needs reporting to the PCT as it is totally unacceptable...

KT - that sounds terrifying about your DD and the alarm going off. Glad P is ok (apart from the reflux) and hope the doctors can reassure you when you see them and prescribe something that will help more with the reflux.

He must be feeling a bit better, he is picking at some cereal and has just eaten a kiwi fruit. He is now going through the change bag that I just packed and is yellin 'choo-choo' becuase he found the thomas book I plan to read him at docs.
When I take him out, o I put thick winter coat on and blanket? or thinner jacket? He is very hot but is shivering, so is he hot or cold????

littleboyblue · 09/04/2009 09:33

Think I'll use a thinner jacket and just take a blanket, I have to keep him cool don't I?

dinkystinky · 09/04/2009 09:42

I think layering up is a good idea LBB.

i am in a supurbly excellant mood

dd kept her bed dry (trialling no night nappy with her the last few days) she did wet herself running to the toilet when she got up but tbf that was at 9.15 and she'd been in bed over 13 hours

ds1 had a dry nappy this morning and did a big pee on the toilet and is happily prancing around in his new roary knickers

and > aarons slept from 21.30 til 5.00 my boobs and i are in a state of shock at that one feel free to hate me and laugh merrily when i'm on here tomorrow complaining abouthim not sleeping at all tonight!

KT, how scary. is there a medical reason for using the monitor? if not you really would be as well to bin it, they cause more anguish than do good by all accounts. babies do occasionally hold their breathe and then do that funny big sigh just as you're starting to really panic.... there's a name for it i think and they all do it occasionally. can't believe your having so much shit from the docs about her reflux. i hope they're more helpful this time... don't worry that she's starving though, the amount of sick always looks like more than it is, dd used to throw up what looked like a whole feed each time but she still piled on weight so was obviously keeping more down than i thought. do you hold poppy upright for an hour or so after feeds? it does make a huge differance.

lbb, sorry your ds1 is sick. a temp on it's own can be a good sign in a way though as it shows he's fighting and infection himself. both my older 2 have inherited my dad's weird thing of coming down with raging (39/40 deg) temps every few months... they never get any other symptoms, just a horrific temp and then they sweat it ut after a day or so. it's scary though, i hope he's ok soon.

mrsy... ouch! hope you're back on you feet soon, have you seen a physio about it?

dinky.... i pmsl at your ds1's trampish tendancies caleb tends to target my couch sadly which isn't as easily removed.... damn thing is textured leather so completely unwashable with anything other than damp clothes..... it's going to reek by the time we're done with potty training

SweetTalkinWoman · 09/04/2009 10:32

Would definitely go with thin layers - also, if your GP surgery is anything like mine, it's a furnace in there! Hope all ok with DS1.

KT - would second the teat comments, although when DD was on Gaviscon I was recommended variable flow teats because Gaviscon makes the formula thicker so it's harder for the baby to get through the hole. Smae with Stay Down formula. I think that generally size two teats have the same size hole as size one, but two of them to get more milk through. Might not be the same with all brands though.

Well, the peace and quiet was short lived chez nous! I went to bed at 9pm but Sam woke for a feed at 11pm, then 2am, then 6am - not tooooo bad if he'd settled in between them! He's so congested with cold and was coughing and snorting away - the coughing was making him sick too, so lots of washing today! We've also been to the GP this morning as I was worried the cough had gone to his chest - it's heading that way so we have a prescription for antibiotics just in case it gets worse over the long weekend.

What's everyone up to for Easter? Orlena and I are having a girl's day out on Saturday to buy shoes etc, and I think I might be brave and try to make Easter nests with her tomorrow.... then we are off to the in-laws in the afternoon.

One of my sisters lives in Maine in the US, and rather bizarrely her husband is in town today and has a present for Sam so I'm off to meet him at lunchtime. I feel a bit funny about meeting him because he and my sister have basically separated - he lives and works in Jeddah, KSA, and she lives in US (he is American). He has a woman in KSA that my sister knows about... All very strange....

Anyway, really got to get going. Everything is taking longer that usual this morning due to only 4 hours sleep .

Calico1 · 09/04/2009 10:42

KT - OMG how scary. I don't have an alarm but a friend of mine has one and it has gone off twice with her baby but baby was fine. I think they do hold their breath sometimes just to scare their mums! I do know another mum whose baby was saved by one so they do have their merits too..... hope you get better advice about the reflux. Lilian has the same problem but it is getting a bit better so I am not giving her anything for it at the moment.

LBB - glad to hear that DS1 is feeling a bit better this morning.
