AliandHerScallywag · 17/04/2009 20:43

Amber I can answer yes to a quite a few too.

pureeandpearls · 17/04/2009 21:26

How many do you have to answer yes to Amber? MIL has been banging on that we shouldn't be sending babypearls to nursery as she keeps bringing germs home. I thought that kids of this age came down with things constantly as it was just their immune systems building up tolerances. Can't argue around the fact that she has an inhaler at the mo though.

Will catch up properly tomorrow- just popped into let you know that I survived the op and am now considerably less wise than I was yesterday. Sobbed my heart out when I realised I was still alive Utterly knackered still. And eating purees with babypuree!! They had to take away some bone to get to one of the teeth so I have literally been hit in the face with a hammer (looks and feels like it too)

Sponge- 12 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sponge - Stefan also used to watch the tv or I would read to him whilst I bfed Tristan . I can still recite "The big red truck" word for word. Once feeding was established then I could play on the floor with S whilst feeding T. Also the night before I would get as well prepared as possible for the next day, things like making a packed lunch for Stefan and putting it in the fridge so that if I was feeding Tristan and Stefan was hungry it was an easy lunch for him.

DebInAustria · 17/04/2009 21:31

Puree - good to hear from you, glad all went OK and sympathies , I had 2 impacted W teeth taken out under local - it was grim to say the least. Enjoy your purees!

Essie3 · 17/04/2009 21:45

Puree a million sympathies - but it's a good decision because you don't want an abscess. I'll have to tell you my sliver of bone story when you're better!

Sponge thinking about it, one of the girls comes to the bfing group with her toddler. She has two girls, and the eldest is just three. She loves coming along because she gets to play with the baby toys, and always gets spoiled by the HVs and staff! Plus I think it's quite good to get the eldest 'used' to it IYKWIM. In a 'this is what mummy does now' kind of way if that makes any sense?

ROFL at the Holland and Barrett idea! I did offer it to my sister - she's been very ill, stomach and digestive problems, gluten free, but at times has been unable to eat anything more than water. I told her my ebm is the ultimate stuff for an underdeveloped little stomach (the little early babies!) and since she's family...
I think you're dead on with the overrated qualities of breastmilk. Thing is, (as you know already), when it comes to bfing, thinking things through in an intelligent manner somehow seems to get forgotten or drowned out from all the 'bfing is the only way' shouting. I must have mentioned me and my siblings and the benefits of bfing in preventing ear infections being disproved?

Did I mention I saw a fat baby the other day? Not normal fat, but too fat. Very weird.

Amber, Ali, hope your babies don't have allergies. Iestyn goes to nursery and had a cold from when he started nonstop until 2 weeks ago. Just under three months. But I think these weeks of not having a cold are the clincher?

Essie3 · 17/04/2009 23:28

Aw, there's nobody here!

Have just spent some time reading the thread titles. Next one should be June 2008. Those rhyming ones are awful!

p.s. for Sponge, Poppy, just learnt how to purl. (Yes, that would be 6 months after I learnt how to knit...) I tried to follow my patons book, and also debbie bliss, but failed. Then my knitting friend taught me...by text message!

spongebrainmaternitypants · 18/04/2009 13:46

AH, sybil , deb, and Essie thanks for all the advice re bf-ing No 2 while entertaining No 1 - v reassuring to know it can be done. A is now 10 mths old is yet to watch any CBeebies so he'll find the whole thing a wonderful novelty!!

(Btw, the fact he hasn't watched CBeebies, is nothing to do with any sniffiness on my part about children not being allowed to watch tv, I just can't bear it and figure A is too young to know the difference between DOND or ITNG at the moment! ).

P&P, it doesn't get any better when they start school - they just have a whole new load of germs to be exposed to!

Essie, do you mean you were suggesting your sister should have your EBM or her child?!

Thread titles, do you mean just "June 2008"? Isn't that a bit boring?!

And I had to laugh at you just learning to purl - you must have been v restricted in what you've been knitting up until now! However, seriously impressed that you have learnt to purl by text - that takes some going. Must get back into my knitting again . . .

neenztwinz · 18/04/2009 16:48

Hi all, I've not been on for a few days and not caught up properly but just wanted to say Sponge, that article about bfing, is that not the same one that was on the bfing threads, that I was having a big debate with tiktok about? I will try to find it... but you were on the thread too.

I actually agree that the benefits of bfing are overrated and in this country ffing is a very very close second, because yes more babies end up in hospital, with ear infections etc, when ff, but the numbers are so low that it is almost irrelevant. The real scandal imo is that mums do not get the right support when they want to bf and have problems.

My friend had her baby on Wed and she wants to bf but she has flat nipples (so interesting what you all said about that before), she struggled to feed her first baby. I have been trying to give her support but on day 2 the midwife said 'we'll just give her a cup (of formula) if she doesn't have a wee in the next nappy' (she had wee'd earlier in the day and poo'd too). I was fuming! can't believe that barely 24 hours after birth they were saying give her formula when she had been latching on fine! Anyway now my friend says she is not latching on abnd that she has given her a bottle . I am not sad about her FFing, only that I know she really wanted to BF this time but there is just not the support system out there for people who have difficulties . I wish I had known about the nipple thing that pulls your nipple out .

Anyway, I have to make the DTs tea but I will try to find that thread.

neenztwinz · 18/04/2009 16:51

www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=breast_and_bottle_feeding&threadid=723015-I-expect-this-article-will-ma ke-some-people-very-angry#14744867

It's not the same article but it is similar and in the thread I debate with tiktok about the numbers involved and percentages etc and what they mean. I think I won but she never accepted defeat!!

neenztwinz · 18/04/2009 17:17

This is the main post copied and pasted...

I found the study here

It says that 12 in 100 babies (FF or BF) are admitted to hospital by 8mo.
1 in 100 is admitted for diarrhoea
3.2 in 100 for LRTI

50% of these admissions could have been avoided by exclusive BFing

therefore
1 in 200 FF babies is admitted to hospital with diarrhoea which would have been avoided if they had been BF
1.6 in 100 FF babies are admitted with LRTI which would have been avoided if BF.

So if your baby is FF, he has a 0.5% chance of being admitted to hospital with diarrhoea by 8mo, and a 1.6% chance of being admitted with LRTI. All babies whether FF or BF have a 1% and 3.2% chance.

If I have read those stats correctly, then that to me is not a greatly increased risk.

The use of 53% and 31% makes things sound massively overwhelming when actually they are not because you are talking about very small numbers in the first place.

Amberc · 18/04/2009 18:04

Neenz - there is also a thing which you use a couple of minutes before feeding that just pulls your nipples out ready. You should get one for her link it's on the site Essie sent round

josey · 18/04/2009 19:13

Very quick post, forgive me for not catching up.

I have Oli home on weekend pass, I have to take her back to the hospital on monday.

The steriods are having an effect. She is still taking seizures but her general movements are begining to come through and she is calmer.

The form of epilepsy that Olivia seems to have, is charged across the whole of the brain, which makes it harder to treat, if it was localised its easier to administer a medication to stop the seizures.

A course of steriods for 2 weeks should(and seem to be) control the static which is charging through her brain all the time. Then the other meds she is on she will then mantain the condition to prevent it from breaking through. The seizures she is having luckly are not causing further damage, as her breathing hasnt been effected.

We arent out of the woods yet, but hopefully twe have turned the corner.

Love to you all and thank you for your prayers xx

spongebrainmaternitypants · 18/04/2009 20:11

josey, thank you so much for taking the time to come and let us know how Oli is getting on - so pleased you are getting some time at home with her and things are stabilising. Give Oli lots of gentle hugs from us x

Neenz, really sorry to hear about your friend - amazed that her MW gave up on her so early . Yes, that was the thread that I tried to argue my piece on but got shouted down so gave up. Ideologists like tiktok are very hard to argue with - I know cos I'm one of them about lots of other issues!

Rolf · 18/04/2009 20:38

Thanks for posting Josey and so pleased you have her home for the weekend. x

poppy34 · 18/04/2009 21:55

quick post to mark my place so apologies to anyone I miss out - josey great news re olivia, sponge ah is right - edie was imho defo brought on by nipple stimulation ,Ah (and how is leak now?) I LOVE THAT ARTICLE -I am sorry but I am not sure I am an apologistic nine months down the line re bf - I felt a lot better as you all know when I packed up and I'm afraid Edie like Alex is another lo who has not been as poorly as some of her bf peers (coincidence probably but hse is perfaectly healthy. amber how is sleeping etc going over weekend and how are you feeling essie I think you're going to be a fab bf supporter - what a shame the woman I tried to speak to weren't like you.

Work going ok - I'm absolutely done in after coming home (Amber did you feel like that for first bit you were back - I know its probably silly question as you had luke on nights as wel) and feeling bit shaky re knowing what to do etc but so far so good. I've got over my rant re the baby group (debthey did go for your more sensible suggestion re weekends but only I think after a cople of others mentioned they'd be back at work in a month or so ) .
Right back to hell's kitchen and will try to post properly tomorrow/monday (we're off to mil to take Edie to cheer her up tomorrow so may not have time).

PS paro nice dresses

Essie3 · 18/04/2009 21:57

Yes, I did indeed mean giving my sister ebm - she has no children! She did think it was quite funny as she munched on her plain oatcake (no gluten, dairy, sugar, alcohol, red meat, processed foods...) But I was joking really.
The knitting is a bit better - I didn't actually knit anything at all because I found it boring, but now I'm going to knit a hat for Iestyn. And my friend gave me a lovely Debbie Bliss book to get going with.

Neenz it's not too late for your friend. Can you work with her? Might be more challenging now, but it can be 'reversed' and she could bf.

Essie3 · 18/04/2009 22:04

Sorry, posted before I had finished!
Wanted to say how pleased I am for Josey little Oli is a fighter. But I'm sorry things are so tough and I wish I could wave a magic wand and give you and Oli an easy life.
AH forgot about the leak - but I did tell Tim all about it because it was so horrific. (My first thought though was 'oh no how much will that cost'! But we live in a badly made house in London where tradesmen cost millions!)

Also x-posted with Poppy who said lovely things! I'm just trying really hard with the bf support thing, because although I had no problems, I had no intention of bfing. Really didn't want to do it. Ironic...the hand (or maybe boob? ) I was dealt meant I had little option! But then if I can help others - because I had really brilliant support - then I will.
BTW, Sponge, on the permanently out nipples, well I wasn't worried before but now I am! (That's laughing angry really - that little emoticon is so mean looking!) But my most new concern is that my boobs are no longer the same size! As each other, I mean. What can I do? Will they settle down?

poppy34 · 18/04/2009 22:13

forgot to do a round of applause for your knitting essie-I've been very slack since I finished E's jacket.

and if you like spongeI'll ask my consultant man next time I go in (lest face it I've spent enough time being lanced may as well make use of the contact for us )

DebInAustria · 18/04/2009 22:19

Josey - great to hear your good news, enjoy Oli being home for the weekend and try to get some rest yourself, you must be exhausted.

Essie - I'm also lop sided - left is much bigger today, but sometimes they swap! I don't remember having different sized boobs after bfeeding before so hopefully they will calm down! How often are you feeding I now? Ethan still isn't 100% and he's wanting extra milk - comfort sucking I think.

Poppy - glad they changed the party

Neenz - are you feeling better, saw on FB that you had E's bug.

DebInAustria · 19/04/2009 19:46

Where is everyone? < Deb sits here patiently waiting for someone to come along>

DebInAustria · 19/04/2009 19:48

Paro - happy Birthday for tomorrow.

abdnhiker · 19/04/2009 20:21

I'm here - but exhausted. No real reason for it, just general too muchness!

Leak fixed and the cost will be reasonable I expect - our builder/plumber tend to send us a bill after the fact but it should be less than £50 so I'm feeling very relieved.

We took Fraser for a bike ride in the bike trailer today and he didn't like it, although eventually fell asleep and we found him sucking his thumb (which he never does) when we got home. He might still be too young - they do say that the trailer is for one year olds...

I'm off to bed...

pureeandpearls · 19/04/2009 20:55

Popping my head in- still feel like somebody smashed my face up.

Is anyone else using/thinking about using pillows?

Oh, and please tell me the best thing that happened to you this week....to make me feel better [feel-sorry-for-myself emoticon]

OP posts:
whinegums · 19/04/2009 21:24

Hello, quiet on here - hopefully everyone has been enjoying the weekend and some nice weather.

Josey, great to hear from you, as always, I'm thinking of you and Oli, and hope the meds do their job.

Puree - ouch - hope you are on the mend soon and feeling back to normal.

Essie, I never intended to bf as long as this, and wasn't sure if I would at all either. In my previous job I got to work on a project with a famous and fab designer, on 'things I have learned in my life.' One of the things was low expectations are a good strategy, and it might sound a bit gloomy, but that was how I approached birth and motherhood. I actually expected it all to be truly horrific - if I was right, then I wasn't going to be disappointed, and anything else was a bonus. I'm not normally a pessimist though! I'm burbling again...

DP refuses to watch Hell's Kitchen - the participants are all a bit rubbish, and I can't bear Granthea, but I heart MPW, so I'm a bit not to watch. I could record it, but we have almost 70 hours of tv on the box to watch already.

Good news about the leak Aberdeen. By the way, if you remember seeing a giant inflatable monkey at Castlegait a couple of years ago, that was my design project - there were another five in Scotland.

I'm knitting again too - slowly but surely. Luckily baby stuff doesn't take too long - no way I could tackle adult projects now!

vivaGlasvegas · 19/04/2009 21:43

just a quicky, trying to catch up, but been away for a few days over the last two weeks and a bit behind!

josey so glad that you've been able to get home for a few days, give Oli a big hug from us.

knitting OOOh, what are you making now whinegums, did you finish the cardigan/jumper thing you were going to make? I've been busy making things for other people's babies, so was pleased to eventually finish a wee cabled caot for C, v cute!

Aberdeen leak sounds awful, but plumber sounds reasonable!

puree hope you are enjoying tasty purees, is baby purees spoon feeding you?

poppy the best thing that happened to me this week was taking Charlotte to see the new lambs at our family friend's farm. She was totally captivated by them, although not as much as she was by the scottie dogs they have - she was throwing her arms and legs out in a starfish maneouvre (sp?) and squealing with joy everytime they came near!
