Well ladies, I am outraged and actually quite upset and must share - So at lunchtime I was in the lovely hotel lounge waiting for my Mum to join me for lunch, and I was sitting on a sofa opposite a couple probably in their 60's - Nye wakes up and starts crying, so I very discreetly and under my scarf put him on the boob - the man huffed and moved so he was no longer opposite me, and the woman said 'can't you find somewhere more private to do that?'.. I was stunned and didn't know what to say, eventually I said 'I'm sorry but what I am doing is completely natural and I'm sorry if it offends you' - they then said they had just come in for a sandwich and shouldn't have to watch me breast-feeding - I suggested they could always move if they were offended - they said I should be the one to move - I asked exactly where was I supposed to go to feed when I was out and about - at this point they refused to speak anymore!!!!!! I stayed really calm and said 'I'm sorry if this offends you, it is certainly not my intention' and carried on.... but feeling very upset and angry at them. It is that type of attitude that makes it so difficult for women to breast-feed in this society - are we supposed to BF in the toilet, which was my only 'private' option - or maybe we are just supposed to stay at home for 6 months?!

What was really nice is that the waiter then arrived, took my order and then said 'ah what a sweet baby, how old is he?' - not at all offended by me feeding. Was very glad to see my Mum though and we whispered very obviously about the couple until they left.

Still, the whole episode did really upset me and surprise me. Have spent the rest of the afternoon thinking up better retorts...

elkiedee · 11/03/2009 16:01

MissJ, some people are just stupid, well done for standing up to them. There are some lovely threads on bf in public on mumsnet, with people's experiences.

Dog - you manage more than I have lately. ANd you've got 3 children to look after Congratulations on getting married... the planning is actually fun. I look back on planning my wedding very fondly, although at the time it was a bit stressful. We got married abroad though, so totally different to the usual wedding. Yay to first smiles! Am still loving her name too.

FYM - Am very jealous, what gorgeous jewellery you sell. Do you make it yourself? I was best friends with the daughter of a jeweller when I was at school... he would make her lovely charm bracelets and things from bits and pieces he had left from things. They were really amazing and I'm sure she still treasures them.

EPPM - DD is exactly the same about me bf - although we made progress today, she climbed on my lap for a cuddle and pointed at my boobs and said "They are baby's bubbas Mummy". That I think is her acceptance.

Tree - could you patent the detachable breast please. You could make millions. Nostalgic about pregnancy so soon? Surely not - do you need me to remind you about the poo??

MissJ - Grrrrr Glad you stood up for yourself. I fed DS in a soft play place today in what I thought was a quiet spot. Turned out I'd sat right in front of the door to the store cupboard and the poor work experience boy who was sent to restock all the cards and things looked horrified when he had to clamber past me! The woman who runs the place was cackling at his embarrassment, poor lad.

Tink - Michael Jackson - wow! Not a fan myself, but should be an amazing show.

DD, DS and I went pottery painting this afternoon [excited emoticon]. I am now the proud owner of a DS footprinted and DD handprinted mug, and Nanny now has a dog bowl decorated by DD as her birthday present. Have to pick them up next week as being fired in the kiln, but am so excited. Am already planning my next trip. DH looked very when I told him about my mug, think I'll have to make him one for Father's Day. And I have had 3...yes 3 hot cups of tea today. The world must be about to end, 'tis a miracle.

Oh, and I've got my laptop back... can you tell

LenniEd · 11/03/2009 16:42

MM - are you on facebook?

elkiedee · 11/03/2009 16:52

at hot cups of tea. I've been made 3 cups - 1 by dp, one by friend of my cousin's who is doing some fixing and redecorating in the bathroom and elsewhere in our house. Don't think I've managed to drink any hot today - yesterday he slept a bit more and I got at least one. Still, the feeding will hopefully turn out to be a good thing.

heron22 · 11/03/2009 17:10

hi msJ, i only bf once in public cos i am too shy plus worry about people like the ones you encountered. i know that they are wrong and makes me angry that you had to put up with that kind of attitude.

hkz · 11/03/2009 17:31

Wow, tons of posts to catch up on!

GTDAB- Congratulations on the wedding, v.exciting.

Miss J- at your wonderful night of sleep and at those insensitive old codgers giving you a hard time. Well done for remaining calm, daft people!

Fym- Fab jewellary, do you design it too?

Lennied- I can't wait til DD is old enough to do activities like pottery painting, am looking forward to doing all that mummy sort of stuff.

Had a good day here, I am 30 today! So celebrated by taking DS to baby clinic for BCG injection! Had a lovely lunch at the city farm and checked out all the baby pigs and lambs, v. cute. Am off to a posh restaurant tonight with DP, am starting to panic slightly as I have bugger all to wear that isn't completely worn out or covered in some kind of baby/toddler related stain.

DP got me a lovely bracelet designed by SIL, it goes with a necklace I got for christmas. Also got completely fab Canon EOS camera from my Dad and sis, which I have been after for ages, so feel like I have been spoilt rotten! Will probably end up with a horrendous hangover oafter one glass of wine, I am completely out of practice.

Right, off to defrost some breast milk.

heron22 · 11/03/2009 17:37

hi all, my LO normally eats roughly every 4 hours and eats very well. but today he is just a bit off his food. he is just not interested and only eats about half of what he normally would.

he looks fine and does not have temperature or anything. does not seem uncomfortable. he hardly had anything to eat at his 3pm feed and it is now 5.30pm. he normally needs a top up at 5pm!

he is 8 weeks old and weighs 6.5 kgs. he is a big boy i know. just worried why he is off his food.

any ideas please? thanks!

moosemama · 11/03/2009 17:46

Happy Birthday hkz! You young slip of a thing you! Have a great night.

Lennied nope sorry, we are a bit anti-facebook in our house I'm afraid.

EPPM DD was clear too - which was a relief because I was born with hip problems that seem to run through the girls on my Mum's side of the family.

MissJ good for you for standing up for yourself and carrying on regardless. I wish I could be half as brave. I'am so ashamed of myself for scuttling off to feed in private or taking EBM with me rather than having to deal with idiots like that!

Right have to go and design a Mr Bump costume for DS2 for red nose day. Apparently his teacher suggested it to him as he has had so many accidents at school just recently. (3 phone calls to Mummy in one week to report head injuries - school secretary suggested we set up an hotline from the school to my house )

elkiedee · 11/03/2009 17:50

Happy birthday hkz. Was that the Hackney City Farm? Whereabouts is it? We've taken ds1 to the one in Kentish Town quite a few times - a 20min walk plus 10 min train journey, but no worries about being able to fit on the bus so long as I have another adult to get the buggy down and up stairs at Gospel Oak (local station has a ramp) and he really seems to like it.

LenniEd · 11/03/2009 17:53

Fair enough MM - just wondering if we might see some pics of your three, that's all.

Happy Birthday HKZ!

moosemama · 11/03/2009 18:44

Keep meaning to create a profile and put some pictures up, just never seem to have enough time. Still haven't solved the problem of my camera not speaking to the MacBook either!

Happy Birthday hkz! at 30...

dog... 24? What about youngdog?

moosemama · 11/03/2009 20:10

givethedogadreamwedding ??

elkiedee · 11/03/2009 20:13

All these youngsters! Sigh.

LenniEd · 11/03/2009 21:29

Elk - I always think of you as being young.

For the record I am 29 next month. Oh so close to 30. Am actually dreading being 30 as we had a surprise 60th party for my PIL last year and I am certain they will try and seek revenge at some point, and I would be

Dog - It was £6 to paint a regular mug or £10 for the really tall ones. They had loads of things to choose from - money boxes, vases, egg cups, plates, plant pots.... and so on. The lady was so helpful and did a fab job of doing Dylan's footprints and DD's handprints.

missjackson · 11/03/2009 21:42

I am 35 already! Late starter....
dog only 24! [sigh]

LenniEd · 11/03/2009 21:46

I missed that Dog is 24 wow! I'd love to have had my two earlier now I know how lovely it is being a Mum. Although I was 26 when I had DD and was the youngest person at my antenatal group by about 5 years which I found hard. Always felt like I was being treated like a naughty schoolgirl!

fymmumoftwo · 11/03/2009 21:51

eppm yes I am a jeweller (or more precisely sell diamonds, diamond jewellery and wedding rings).

Don't design it but we do make every piece from scratch for the customer, so the rings you get are brand new and haven't been tried on by everyone in the shop

I love what we do as we aren't a shop (internet only) and we sell the same stuff (often better) as most of the high end high street jewellers (beaverbrooks et al) for half the price. I love the internet!

Miss J = don't worry - I was ignored by the waiters in a restaurant once...I sat down was given a menu and started to feed DS1 and then waited and waited for a waiter to take my order....nothing... had to shout in the end to get service .

fymmumoftwo · 11/03/2009 21:53

hkz - happy birthday!!!

elkiedee · 11/03/2009 23:05

I was what was known as an elderly primagravida with my first baby.

EachPeachPearMum · 12/03/2009 02:34

Me too Elkie.. and that was 3 or 4 years ago!
