By the way Roobie, how did you get on with the Paediatrician? DD has developed a flat head too.

leggymamba · 21/09/2005 10:27

Feeling very ignorant - what's the problem with flat heads - ds has very flat one at back. But dd also has quite flat and she's 2. Do I need to worry?

This week I've been mainly washing as dd is potty training (not gone too bad 4 misses on day 1, 2 on day 2 and so far today none), ds is upto 3 solid meals a day. Forgot just how messy this is - particularly as he is also fixated on blowing raspberries, not so cute with a mouth full of carrot! how much milk/how many milk feeds are you giving your weaned babies now?

Verso · 21/09/2005 10:29

Just a quick update - DD slept solidly for TEN HOURS on Monday night . Didn't do anything different. I think she must just be getting that bit older [shrug emoticon]. Last night was back to business as usual though, but it does give me hope.

I'm now trying to sort out her daytime routine a little, as the nursery want to know when she has her formula (sic) and also what times she naps. Eek.

We have ended up with a huge settling-in period because the nursery wouldn't let me change my start date, so I'm not sure what/how is best... I might post on another thread to get some tips.

Glad everyone sounds like they're doing ok!

Verso · 21/09/2005 10:38

Oh God, lockets - I was just browsing the 'sleep' threads for info on naps and saw your thread about night time sleep (or lack of it). I'm really sorry I posted my previous post now. I totally didn't mean to be insensitive! I've had sooooo many sleepless nights, I do know how revolting sleep deprivation is. I hope things settle down for you soon!

Roobie · 21/09/2005 19:32

Hi
Re A's flat head the paed confirmed everything I already knew - that it is a cosmetic thing only and his head should round out as he gets older. He has seen more and more of this since the introduction of the anti SIDS "back to sleep" campaign. Sometimes the reason for babies always sleeping on one side of their head can be because their neck muscles on one side are too taut or there is some kind of muscular problem - however A does not have this problem and I only have to encourage him to lie more on the other side by placing toys/light etc on the right side of the cot to encourage him to turn his head.
It really is very common - so much so that I was rather embarrassed at my GP referring me - loads of other babies have slightly flattened heads without their mums or anybody even commenting on it!

I think my GP is either extremely inexperienced or excessively errs on the side of caution! We had our visit to the opthamologist today to check out A's non-existant squint! At least he has now had a good overhaul and gone away with a clean bill of health.

yourlittleswampduck · 23/09/2005 11:25

Thanks Roobie, they do go overboard don't they... I have had the flat head, the squashed nose and the clicky hips all referred now. Thankfully all cleared too. I have been told the same re flat head and that it will sort itself out and that we all have slightly mishapen heads anyway (I know I do!) so it was good to hear you have been told the same Roobie. ps, I wouldn't worry leggymamba, it all sounds perfectly normal!

Lucy99 · 23/09/2005 19:02

Hello, been keeping up with everybodies news but no time to post for ages. Freya lovely but gigantic - now 20lbs at 5 months with whopping feet like a yeti! Too long for her car seat now so got to get a forward facing one tomorrow. Feel like i'm constantly buying more equipment - v expensive this baby business! She's had her first cold this week so lots of waking up in the night but hoping she goes back to normal soon. Also we took her dummy away last week which didn't go down well! She suddenly started waking up crying every time it fell out so we reckoned cold turkey was the only option - screamed like a banshee the first few sleep times but seems to have forgotten about it now. Felt rotten knowing that if I just put it back in she would stop though - hate it when she cries with real tears!! Off to puree more veg this evening - I remember when friday nights meant dressing up and going out - not mushing up broccoli followeed by an early night! Hope all the babies are well xx

mummydreamer · 23/09/2005 19:35

Hello everyone - haven't posted on this thread in absolute yonks but have vaguely been following everyone's news. DS is now known as Stan (due to looking like Stan Laurel - according to Granny.....) and is growing far too fast for my liking - where has my newborn gone?!!!

I empathise with everyone up several times a night - Stan wakes at least four times for a feed and it's a nightmare! However I'm determined to carry on with the old breastfeeding for a while yet. Stan's also gearing himself up for solids - looking desperately at any food everyone else is eating. I sense that I won't be able to hold out much longer...

We're also planning to leave the smoke and move to the country. We are expecting to complete on a new house in 3 weeks time and I'll finally get my chickens!!! I'm half scared, half excited - it will be a whole new way of life for us. Hopefully a good one for everyone.

Anyway - hope everyone's well and I'll keep looking out for news...

Darciesmum · 23/09/2005 19:51

Hello All,

NIce to see we r all getting there!

Work is going well, enjoying my 2 days, and have been told i have to take Darcie in more as they haven't seen her since she was a dot!!! lol

HAd Darcie weighed today at 25 weeks she is 15lbs 14oz, and length of 64.5cms! So she is getting chubby.

She is now onto 7month types of food! and loving it! Her favourite is crusty bread or toast with Marmalade on!

Have to go as she needs her nite time bottle then hopefully she'll go through till 8:30am like today! as it's usually till bout 7am but she goes down at 8pm! so sleeping through still!

DelGirl · 24/09/2005 11:08

Its ages since I posted too, but like Lucy, I have had an eye open on this thread, just not had much new news to tell really. DD is great, it's so nice to wake up to her smile every morning. She apparently weighs 13.13 now according to the HV but i'm not so sure as the scales weren't working properly but I guess she is there abouts and quite long.

We've been to the Next sale this morning and bought quite a few things. A couple of items i've bought that are 9/12 mths and even 12/18 . The 12/18 are cropped trousers but I think they'll be fine as full length and they were only about £3. I'm hopefully going away in the spring so it's in readyness for that really. Still, I only spent £38 on about 8 or 9 items so can't grumble.

DD has had a cold this week but she's still smiling. The only time she's grumbled is about an hour after she's gone to bed when she wakes up snuffly and that's only happened twice. She's sleeping 11/12 hours straight through at night. I know i'm very lucky. I'm still feeding her myself apart from her last feed at 6ish. Can't understand why i'm so tired. Hmmmm, must go to bed earlier.

I plan to start weaning her in about 3 to 4 weeks. It is funny as every time I eat she's staring and salivating so I think she'll be more than ready for pureed carrots yum yum .

Keep meaning to clear my front room of object d'art as I don't think it'll be long before she's crawling. The room has been taken over with her toys but I love it. I've waited a long time for my house to be overrun with child paraphernalia and it's great. Keep wanting to go out and buy a highchair but tbh she's not sitting up yet and I keep having to tell myself it'll only take up space in the kitchen. But I feel like a kid with new shoes iykwim.

Right, that's us. I must go and do some housework whilst dd is still asleep. Take acre all.

DelGirl · 24/09/2005 11:10

take care

aprilmeadow · 25/09/2005 09:09

Hi,
Just come back from a week in Scotland. We decided to fly rather than drive, Jack was brilliant he slept all the way up and most of the way back. Even though it is only 55 mins from Heathrow to Glasgow I dont think DH and I could have handled him screaming the whole time. It was lovely to get away and spend some time with our friends up there. They have a 13wk dd and she is tiny, had forgotten that Jack had been that small once! Only down side to the holiday was that he woke at least 4 times a night - which is quite hard when we have got used to it being just the once - so we opted for the lazy option and stuck him in bed with us.

This week we are moving onto 3 meals a day. He has already found fruit/veg that he loves and those that he hates. He does not like broccoli, cauliflower and carrot. Although if i hide them in with something else he is fooled

Still awaiting the teeth, he is dribbling like mad, and always has something in his mouth. Not sure if it is related to teething, but he has got a streaming cold - poor thing. Have him dosed up on calpol, which seems to be helping.

Off to visit the nursery tomorrow and to meet his key worker. I have a really busy week ahead of me, got to cram as much in as possible as i go back to work a week on tuesday.

Weighed Jack last week and he was 19lbs.

aprilmeadow · 27/09/2005 21:31

Well we went to nursery yesterday. They're all really lovely, and Jack was facinated by all the toys and other babies. I am feeling quite positive about leaving him there.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Verso · 28/09/2005 10:01

DD starts nursery on Monday - aaaargh! I was going to leave her for a couple of hours but it looks like it will have to be all afternoon as work have asked me to go in for a big meeting. I hope she'll be ok . I could take her with me to work, but I'll be meeting the new MD for the first time, so I don't really want to have her there.

Apart from that, sleep is going backwards after the dizzy heights of a couple of weeks ago. No idea what is up. I've started solids again but it makes no difference (I know I know that's an old wives' tale, but it was worth a try). She loves her food though, so at least that's something! I think the sleep problem might be because she's very active at night at the moment. I find her wedged upside down against the corner of the cot, or stuck on her front against the bars etc.

Ah well. I suppose it's probably 'just a phase'!

On the food subject, how do you know when they're getting the right amount? DD just seems soooooooo hungry, and I don't want to make her fat! At the moment I just watch to see what she does, and eventually she turns her head away and admits defeat, but I'm surprised by how much she can get through.

alux · 28/09/2005 13:03

Verso, not started to wean yet myself. but will try some banana and sweet potato on the weekend. as far as how much to feed them, don't worry about that, let dd decide how much she wants - you are doing the right thing, ie offer what she wants until she turns away from it. that's what I read anyway. I guess it means that child will naturally stop when they have had enough. also at this age, give milk feed first so that they already have what they need in the form of proper nutrition as weaning foods are not v. nutritious.

no chance of overfeeding her to make her fat at this age as weaning foods are mostly just starch (ie carbohydrates made of long chains so the body has to burn energy to convert it to usable glucose) and are therefore quite filling.

alux · 28/09/2005 13:07

good luck with nursery you little new starters. we had to go to a funeral in London yesterday - a 4.5 hr drive for us. today I took off work as was ill from monday and still went into work. yesterday was v. emotionally draining besides the travelling and still feeling a little poorly today. In addition [insert violin playing emoticon here] as this morning wore on, i realise that I am having a muscle spasm in my back! I am hunched over like I've got osteoporiosis at the mo and now have to to to nursery to get dd to get her last round of jabs.

Lucy99 · 28/09/2005 19:08

verso, just a quickie - freya was doing the same thing as your lo and wedging herself in awkward positions in cot. kept waking herself up so we now wedge her in with two rolled up towels either side of her and she sleeps really well, just thouight i'd mention as it def helped us!
Alux - sorry about rubbish few days - hope back improves soon!

Verso · 29/09/2005 07:39

Ooh thanks for the tip, Lucy99. How do you make sure the towels don't unravel? (Sorry, being a bit dim here - bit of a rubbish night is my excuse!) and do you mean really wedged, as in you kind-of slot in DD in between them? (Just trying to picture this in my mind!)

If there was a [sympathy emoticon] I would put one in here for you, alux. Sounds like you had a bit of a day of it yesterday! I hope today is better.

Kelly1978 · 29/09/2005 09:51

hello everyone.

Have jsut had a read through and catch up. I'm kind of envious of those of you going back to work - I would love to escape for a couple of days! I also think that delgirl is slightly crazy. During the day we push the coffee table to the side and the place looks like a nursery. I enjoy getting it all out of sight in the evening tho.

My boys are 6 mnths now. They have been suffering with colds for weeks now. They seem to be getting bug after bug, so no chance of them sleeping thru. PU/PD did help for a bit though - jsut given up for now. Akshay is a typical man, feels very sorry for himself and just wants to sit in front of cbeebies with his blanket and bunny. Ravi brushes it off more is a very lively happy little boy at the moment. He rolls round and round the lounge and is also sitting now.

They are both little porkers, 22lbs plus, and well into 6-9mnth clothes. Ravi has overtaken Akshay now, which surprised me. They are on 7 mnth jars ( as buying 4 mnth works out too expensive) and love them. Agree to feed them what they want. DD was a pig, and gobbled a couple of jars at a time, but once she was walking she burned it off.

Lucy99 · 29/09/2005 18:44

Verso - we put her so the towels are just below her armpits so she can spread her arms out above them and there is a tiny bit of space between her sides and the towels so she is snug but not squashed if that makes sense. If you roll them up tight with the loose ends down against the matress they don't seem to unravel but you could always use a strip of brown packing tape round each rolled up towel to make sure?

yourlittleswampduck · 01/10/2005 12:50

Hi everyone, quick question... has anyone heard of the goi goi baby pillows to help prevent and ease the worsening of flat head syndrome please?

aprilmeadow · 05/10/2005 11:15

Hi YourLittleSwampDuck - sorry I havent heard of those pillows.

Started back at work yesterday. Might sound weird, but it doesnt really feel any different...... Jack is loving nursery and I guess that is making me feel happier about leaving him.

He has been a bit grumpy of late, but i guess that is down to teething. Had a short spell of him sleeping through, and has now reverted back to waking once or twice a night.

Hope that everyone is doing well.

Hi everyone

hope all are well and babies are behaving themselves

esther is having a ball, keeping us up half the night every night and feeding like there is no tomorrow

I've been so knackered I haven't been able to post much. SAw your thread about Saskia waking loads Lockets and REALLY empathised but couldn't summon up the energy to post. Had absolutely no advice to offer as we are in the same boat. Sorry honey.

She has gone down for the evening now and we await the call....

never heard of it but will try it if it works, will try anything after another awful night with 3 wakings between 12.30 and now. Dh is ready to lose his mind. I am "at work" now and trying to see the screen, nevermind type anything legible, is a challenge.

let me know if you try this Lockets. Chin up, it will surely have stopped by the time they are, oh, eighteen or so
