Is anyone else as naughty as me? I make up formula in advance and heat it in the microwave. Would not admit it to HV though. On the other hand I have slightly obsessive rules about weaning - if it's shop-bought it can't have added sugar or salt (pretty much narrows it to Heinz and Boots-own) and I'm antsy about reheating meat so I never take home-made meat icecubes out&about.

Alieight, LOL at the 71 imprint! Must have been a shock.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 04/01/2009 14:45

Oh and Alieight, remind him it's not the quality of the ring that matters, it's the message it gives out (says the lady in the Lizzie Duke wedding ring).

PetitFilou1 · 04/01/2009 14:57

Hi all
I can't keep up as we're in manic 'back to school mode' atm

vg so sorry to hear about your burglary - that is awful and very upsetting that someone has been through your things.

Re weaning Toby has been following what is happening when someone eats but like no1 I do not think he is physically ready yet. He woke up at 10pm, 1am, 3am and 7am last night so he is certainly hungry but I may hang on and see if I can ride this out first.

I am of the opinion that weaning does provide a better nights sleep but not when you first introduce it. I mean one teaspoon of baby rice isn't going to do much is it! I think some mothers expect miracles to happen overnight (disclaimer: this comment is not intended for anyone on this thread) My first two dcs settled at night only when they were on three square meals a day plus milk so sadly I think Toby will probably be the same. Knew it wouldn't last!

Buckets I also am wearing an engagement and wedding ring from Argos, in fact my engagement ring is glass and cost £5.99 . It's a lovely flower 7-stone cluster though, and sparkles like a real one when I remember to clean it

Still averaging 3 wake-ups a night here, although occasionally he gets my hopes up with just one . If I'm honest I think most of the time he's not waking up hungry but I'm too tired to try and settle him, it's easier just to stick boob in for 5 minutes till he goes back to sleep. Soon be time to move DS into his own room then DH can get up and pat him back to sleep

VG I hope you are managing to get things together after the burglars

PetitFilou1 · 04/01/2009 15:31

Right here's a challenge for you all

I have a wedding to go to in March. Dress code is black tie and cocktail dresses. The challenge is to find a cocktail dress I can bf in - I'm thinking probably not strapless

sazzles I've just finished the thank you cards - what a flipping tedious job that is - dd decorated some nice angels to go in them though (until she got tired)

Sibh · 04/01/2009 15:33

VG- your DS sounds like such a lovely boy, and it's awful that he's been rocked by what has happened. You wonder do the people who do this think about that side of it at all.

LOL at Emma's crash course in swimming Sazzles. My weaning experiences sound very much like yours. Back in 2004 before BLW took off I think it was called 'Impatient Mother who can't be Arsed with Faffing' Weaning. No time to work out the acronym for that. The second time around with DD1 we went from weaning with rice on day one of 6 months to her eating risotto and, as I recall, Jamie Oliver's north african lamb a bit squished up, at a family party on day one of nine months so no harm done. When I was pregnant with DS there was a big report on how babies who can cope with big lumps by 9 months are much better eaters by three so I took that as my marker.

I agree with you, PF, that the food has to reach a certain amount before it really affects the sleep situation. There will be tears between here and then, and not all from the babies ...

Alieight, the Christmas presents sound yummy and the birthday to come sounds very nice too!
My engagement and wedding rings are lovely and they were bargains from the fab Birmingham jewellery quarter where they make lots of the rings that get sold through bigger shops. When my sister bought her wedding ring she she added to price to mine (about 10% of hers), divided it in two and told her DH-to-be the average price of the family jewels

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 15:42

This is a full quote from the Nov-Dec2008 Mentalfloss magazine:

"Diamond Engagement Rings
Prior to the 20th century, engagement rings were strictly luxury items, and the rarely contained diamonds. But in 1939, the De Beers diamond compnay changed all that when it hired ad agency N. W. Ayer $ Son. The industry had taken a nosedive in the 1870s, after massive diamond deposits were discovered in South Africa. But the ad agency came to the rescue by introducing the diamond engagemnet ring and quietly spreading the trend through fashion magazines. The rings didn't become de rigueur for marriage proposals until 1948, when the company launched the crafty 'A Diamond Is Forever' campaign. By sentimentalizing the gems, De Beers, ensured that people wouldn't resell them, allowing the compnay to retain control of the market. In 1999, De Beers chairman Nicky Oppenheimer confessed, 'Diamonds are intrinsically worthless, except for the deep psychological need they fill.'"

As for me, I don't have an engagement ring.... I have a WEDDING BAND which is totally cooler and makes a much GRANDER statement.

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 15:43

forgive my typos. i did that whole thing one-handed.

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 15:48

PF do ya'll have a store called JCPenney over there? I walked through ours this wek and saw lots of black party dresses perfect for your event and your bf requirement....because of the material.

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 15:50

Sazzles swimming sounds wonderful. Reese may not make it in the pool until the beach.

longwayfromhome · 04/01/2009 15:55

Hello CC, SevenRotters, no1 and anyone else vaguely near Lincoln.

I am planning to go to Whisby with DH and DS on this coming Wednesday. It's got parking, a nice cafe with lots of space, good baby changing, walks if the weather gets any better and a not very interesting but at least child friendly exhibition about energy efficiency if not.

I was wondering if anyone else wanted to come along? We will be there from about 12ish

Thoughts to all, esp VG after the burglars

PetitFilou1 · 04/01/2009 16:08

No sadly not TS....

Sibh · 04/01/2009 16:56

Before I forget, there are some good ideas about baby weaning in the back of Nigella's How to Eat in the children's food section, and the Annabel Karmel book was a great help when I started out with DS1 ... I really love the weaning phase and a dislike of faffing really only applies to not wanting to keep mushing things up for too much of it.

By the way, one of my sisters is hoping to go for a VBAC for her baby due in April. Could any of you recommend books, sites or discussions where she could get good, balanced, non-guilting info to help her make the decision that's best for her and the new one?

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 17:28

Sibh here's one periodical that I read online: Midwiferetoday
and another site that's good BirthingNaturally

I'm sure she already know about the Spinning Babies site.

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 17:29

Sibh there's some really really good threads here for VBAC information & support. Is she on any of them?

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 17:35

Sibh look for posts by lulumama.

SevenRottersPottering · 04/01/2009 17:37

LWFH that sounds nice; unfortunately we are reliant on public transport so it's a bit far for us! Thik we're off swimming on Wednesday anyway, DD starts pre-school next week so we need to get swimming in, don't want her skiving off in her first couple of weeks. They only let you on the waterslide after 12.30pm and nursery starts at 12.45 so can't do both on same day and am too lazy to go at the weekend when it's busier

Will be following you Sazzles in taking the decorations down tonight. May even burn some of the tree on the fire too, depends how sparky it is. Time to drink the last of the home made Baileys too, yum

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 17:37

Sibh lulumama is so good. Just tell your sister to post Lulumama help with VBAC under the childbirth topic and she will appear. :-)

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2009 17:39

We took Christmas things down yesterday too. Now the house looks empty......

CaptainCaveman · 04/01/2009 18:02

sevenrotters home made baileys I didnt' know it was possible...ok well I never really thought about it. Does it taste like the real thing?

lwfh Have never been there and would love to come - am just trying to arrange for someone to collect ds1 from school at lunchtime and return him there, fully fed, an hour later. hmmm. Dsis is a no go but will try mum...... Would be fab and not too far from Nottm.

Just taken our decs down too - the lounge looks huge now! Hopefully it was our last Christmas in this house and that 2009 will see us move to our dream house - just got to sell this one first!

SevenRottersPottering · 04/01/2009 18:13

CC I think it tastes quite like the real thing, it's not quite as sickly and you can make it as strong as you like. If anyone's interested it's:

1 large tin of Tip Top (evaporated milk type thing)
1 cup whisky or whisky/vodka mix for a less strong taste
1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar depending on taste. It's nice with a bit of brown sugar actually
2 teaspoons instant coffee dissolved in hot water

mix all together in a large jug and chill. They seem to have made the tip top a bit thicker than they used to so I have been also adding about 1/4 cup of cold water to the completed mix just to thin it out. Sadly it's chock full of calories so no more for a while after today

Thanks a million for the tips TS. DSis has had hyperemesis throughout the pregnancy and root canal surgery in the last few weeks too, so she hasn't had a lot of time to look for stuff and it's tricky to know where to start. Thanks for your help.
