Star - is Q having 12 week growth spurt?

It's very quiet on here. Is everyone spending quality time with their families?

hi csws I think so... he cant get enough milk. I even had dh give him a bottle of formula last night because I was just so exhausted from feeding and trying to store up expressed milk for after school holiday.
How's your little man?

HI all,

Had a pretty crap xmas. Joe was very unsettled xmas day and wouldn't sleep at all so was very cranky by the time xmas dinner came round. Ds1 also had a massive tantrum at the dinner table as i had put a sprout on his plate and he wanted to go and play, not eat. All i wanted was us to sit together for one meal but it was not to be..oh well, maybe next year....my brother didn't send me a xmas present this year as we had a big fall out 2 years ago and i only have him and my mother left in my family. Mum made him speak to me xmas day by handing him the phone and he said thanks for his present that i got him but never mentioned that he had got me nothing (should i have said something and caused another row??)i didn't dare tell my mum as she would have been really upset but wouldn't have challenged him either so there's no point in upsetting her. I tried really hard to forget about it but what with Joe crying a lot, DS1 having tantrums,FIL being grupmy as he hates xmas and then he decided to go home after xmas dinner with MIL who could see i was upset but had to go with him, it was all too much....maybe its pnd or maybe its just families at xmas...hope you all had a better time.

Sorry q is giving you a tough ride Star. Sounds like a growth spurt or maybe something you ate??? Sprouts can make babies windy too!! I have no magic answers i'm afraid - I just decided one day to get a bit tougher with Joe and tkae him for walks in the pram and get him to sleep in there rather than on me. It works most of the time (not xmas day of course!!). Today i had to rock him to sleep then put him in the pram. I think he gets woken up by trapped wind which usually stops bothering them by three months (Joe is 16 weeks this week ). If he doesn't get enough sleep in the day, he's in a foul mood by teatime and needs lots of cuddles so i have to persevere and get him to sleep in the day.

star6 · 27/12/2008 18:31

myjob - how much did you leave in the bottle for naomi of ebm? Just curious how much other babies take from a bottle in a feed...
I usually prepare 150ml for him and he eats it all in one feed. Not sure if that's a lot - if he's just taking it because it keeps coming and I should put less in bottle or if it's normal (only for when dh or friend is looking after him while I'm at work).

star6 · 27/12/2008 18:36

loulou - sorry about difficult xmas day
So you put him to sleep by pushing him around? I wanted ds to self soothe, but just read dr. sears who says that's not actually a good thing really - that babies are happier when soothed to sleep by their parents. Sounds logical. I know a lot about development and attachment (because of my background and degrees) but just feel so lost with my own baby

I think it's so hard with family at holidays. In a way, it's almost a blessing our family is thousands of miles away and come at different times of year to see us We enjoyed our little fam of 3 around the tree No tension with family (and trust me, there would have been if any had been around!).

heather1980 · 27/12/2008 23:05

hello all, had an ok christmas. we spent the day at my parents and my pil came as well.
i was upset by some of the gifts i was given, my dh gran gave me a horrible tesco gift set that i'll never use and mil gave me a nasty nasty cardigan! i'm 28 ffs not 50! so they're going back, dh gave me a cd and some new crocs, which i liked but he also got me a 'mystery box' from firebox that was rubbish so is going back. i was really upset that no-one seemed to know what to get me, so got me crap. dh was fabby though he went out today and got me a lovely watch and even braved the next sale and got me a top and some jeans .
it's my birthday in a few weeks so i'll see what gifts i get then. but i would rather get nothing than a pants gift with no thought put into it.

off to some friends tomorrow so hope to have a lovely day, tried Alex with a bottle today with some ebm, but he was having none of it. i hoped to have a break tomorrow but seems he has other ideas, arrggg i have loads of ebm in the freezer

Honeymoonmummy · 28/12/2008 00:25

Sorry to hear about your crap Xmas Loulou. My brother had his first year as an uncle this year and all he got me, DH and Poppy was a baby towel from him and his partner - and no card. I was at least expecting a "Niece" card since its his first opportunity to do so. He doesnt earn much and he's always busy with work at Xmas but even so... DH has a friend who would make a great godfather but my brother and especially my dad will be expecting it to be my brother... he's adopted so dad's got a chip on his shoulder about never letting him feel left out...he's 26 FFS!!!!!

My Xmas was wonderful, Poppy has been fairly well behaved, DH is downstairs at the moment with a bottle of EBM so I should really be in bed and not on MN!!!!!

Night night all xx

Aubergenie · 28/12/2008 11:31

Sorry to hear some of you didn't have a good Christmas. Families, eh? We're back home now. It was lovely to get away but I was definitely ready to leave yesterday.

We've had a sleep breakthrough over the last few days. DS (now 12 weeks) has gone from feeding every 2 hours and slept like an angel for the last few nights (I know, I could really regret saying this. Famous last words and all...) We took the Amby with us and DS spent his first whole night in it (waking only once for a feed, another first.). I even had to wake him once myself one night because he had been sleeping for so long, my boobs were like rock and I was leaking milk all over the place. Presumably my milk supply will adjust to this after a while (and if this sleeping pattern continues)?

We also had a bouncy chair breakthrough. I was given an all singing, all dancing chair by a friend. It vibrates, bounces and plays music. DS hates it and screams his head off every time I put him in it. While we were at my parents, my mum produced a really old, very basic bouncy chair, complete with 70s floral pattern. She bought it at a car boot sale for £1. I was sure he wouldn't like it, but he absolutely loves it, was bouncing happily and even fell asleep in it. So, I've brought it back with me.

I hope you're not still feeding Star! Enjoy the rest of your weekend everybody.

loulou33 · 28/12/2008 13:33

thanks star, it would have been nice just the 4 of us but hey ho. The children had a good time most of the day and Joe loved the wrapping paper.

I would like joe to self-soothe too but i think he's too young yet. I don't think being pushed in a pram counts as self soothing though and the pram faces backwrds so he can still see me as i push - does that count?. I too know about attachment and stuff but its very different when its your own isnt it?? The last two days he's fallen asleep in my arms and then i've put him down after. Eventually i hope to put him down awake liek we do at night but he gets so much wind during the day, he needs to be cuddled to sleep.

star6 · 28/12/2008 16:18

loulou - so true! before having Q i thought i could give anyone advice on how to facilitate secure attachment... when you have your own it's a whole new world! It has been both eye opening and humbling for me. I do think that (most) mothers have the best instincts though and to trust instinct over books is so key. Being a mother has changed my entire prespective as a teacher... if I were still doing counseling and play therapy my work would change as well. maybe it should be a requirement to be a mom before entering such professions?
oh and I think pram does count! im currently of the mindset that anything that gets baby to sleep not directly on mommy counts as self soothing (or on the road to it) at this point!! lol

Ekka · 28/12/2008 21:13

Glad to hear about some good Christmases, but I'm sorry that some people had a rough time. We had quite a good time, though I'm thinking that last Xmas was easier (dd was 6.5mths and in a definite routine by then!). The inlaws have headed over to Germany for a few days, so we're relaxing now, just the four of us....

I've finally got round to posting some pics on my profile. Must go now, as ds seems to be coming down with another cold (I think he's losing his voice ) and he has been really grumpy today, poor lad...

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/12/2008 21:15

Evening ladies. Back from my parents now, and pleased to report that it wasn't as terrible a time as I had expected. My brother has grown the most ridiculous beard since we saw him a few weeks ago, so much time was spent taking the piss out of him. He got a hat for Christmas which made him remind me of someone from zztop .

Dd was very excited but went into overtired meltdown a few times as a result (afraid they don't grow out this even at nearly 3!). Ds has another cold, is still dribbly, with me yet to decide if it's because of his cold or because he's teething, and didn't sleep great, but could have been worse. Last night he wouldn't resettle at all though, and clearly had a temperature, so we gave him some calpol and I had a sleepless night cuddling him.

Our house is FREEZING now though, after not being lived in for a few days. We have the heating on, the open fire on, and the upstairs air conditioning on heat, but it's still cold!

Aubergenie - hoping that we can look forward to a similar break through next week, when ds reaches 12 weeks.

honeymoon - you must have who YOU want to be godparents to Poppy. It's too important a decision to be swayed by other people on. I'm sure that there was/is an expectation that my brother (the only sibling that dh and I have between us) would be/will be godfather to dd/ds, but I wouldn't even entertain the idea.

Sorry you had such a bad Christmas loulou. Hope that new year is better for you. Is anyone/everyone doing anything to celebrate?

heather1980 · 29/12/2008 09:34

morning ladies.
had a lovely day yesterday at our friends house.
the kids were so well behaved. and alex spent a lot of the day watching people and smiling.
alex went down at 12:50am after his last feed and is STILL ASLEEP!! i can't believe it. i am going to wake him soon coz i have 2 massive rocks for breasts, but he's STILL ASLEEP! (can you tell i'm excited?!)

Aubergenie · 29/12/2008 10:18

Great pictures Ekka - that baby Santa suit is hilarious!

I spoke too soon about the sleeping. Poor DS had horrible wind and was really uncomfortable in the Amby. I was up and down quite a few times and then gave up and brought him in with me. I'm thinking about taking him to a cranial osteopath to see whether they can help with his digestion. He hardly burps and then gets awful wind and hiccups several times a day. He also strains as if he's trying to do a poo and seems really uncomfortable, which can carry on for days until the poo finally arrives.

Was it someone on this thread who posted a link to finding a cranial osteopath?

star6 · 29/12/2008 10:31

Aubergenie are you located near london/surrey? I found a good one in surrey... q does this too... the straining then no poo for days and belly grows massively, too! and hiccups often... gp of course says "it's normal" the should create an "annoyed" emoticon

star6 · 29/12/2008 12:46

quick question...
latel, sometimes... not all the time, ds has burped while feeding... doesnt stop sucking or unlatch, just burps and carries on. not sure how it is possible or if maybe im holding him wrong or something? anyone else's baby ever do this?

thanks myjob it is quite funny!

Honeymoonmummy · 29/12/2008 15:46

Hi all,

Good question re new year CSWS, I was wondering what we could do to make the night a bit special. I've spent 3 x 2 hours away from Poppy in the 8 weeks since she was born and that was with DH staying with her so a night out is deffo out of the question. It'll probably just be a takeaway again...I might have my first drop of booze since last Feb too, if I have just 1 glass of wine would I need to express and throw it away?

You are right re godparents CSWS. I'll see if my brother shapes up in the coming months before making a final decision, he does seem fond of her...

Star, with the reflux Poppy keeps vomiting on my boob so count yourself lucky!!

I took Poppy back to the docs today cos the reflux doesnt seem to be getting any better after an inital improvement, he has told me to double the gaviscon and see how we get on. She's constipated now cos of the gaviscon, apparently there is no medication she can be given, I seem to remember someone else having this problem, has anyone got any ideas?

Also, I want to start spacing the feeds a bit to get a bit of a routine going, what do other people do?

Ekka, your pics are lovely but it has freaked me out because both DH and I think that your DS is the spitting image of Poppy!

Aubergenie, go to www.cranial.org.uk/ for a cranial osteopath, I've taken Poppy for 2 sessions now for her reflux, it sounds like the sort of thing they'd be able to help with, good luck!

My god, what an epic posting!!!

Aubergenie · 29/12/2008 16:36

We've been invited to a party but we're staying in for new year too. I've been having the odd small glass of wine Honeymoon and not bothered expressing. I think it's fine as long as you don't get legless.

Thanks for the link to the cranial osteopath site, as well. You've found it really good, haven't you?

I'm in east London Star so Surrey's a bit too far for me, but thanks anyway. Does Q's tummy wake him up as well? I'm taking ds to have his jabs tomorrow, so I'll ask the nurse about it. I did wonder if it was normal, and just the sign of an immature digestive system but it does seem very uncomfortable for him at times. Also he had a bit of a difficult time at his birth and I know CO can help with that, so I don't suppose it will do him any harm.

Have you taken Q already, Star?

Honeymoonmummy · 29/12/2008 17:12

Aubergenie I did think it was good the first time we went, she slept loads afterwards and seemed calmer generally, I dont know if that was a coincidence tho cos the second time she was pretty restless but he said he had done something to her diaphragm so maybe that was why? Third session in the new year so fingers crossed...

Aubergenie · 29/12/2008 20:00

Well I've had a good chat with a cranial osteopath near me, and we're going tomorrow after his jabs. She seems to think she can help, so we'll see. According to that website, the cord around the baby's neck at birth can cause problems with digestion. S was in distress when I was in labour and it turned out that the cord was around his neck.

DP thinks the whole thing is very suspect and is worried that they're going to hurt him, so I really hope it'll do some good and he'll be convinced!

Honeymoonmummy · 29/12/2008 21:22

Tell him its all very gentle, it doesnt look like they're doing anything. My DH was like that, still jokingly calling him the Witch Doctor! Good luck!
