KSal - that's def the pole thing that I saw, but I swear that it's a different photo from the one that I was thinking of! I can see in your shot that it's a hoop that comes round, whereas in the pic that I remember it looked like more of a pole sticking out from overhead .

We have bought this for ds for Christmas, which should fit on the buggy (if I ever get round to using it!) and car seat, but thought it would be great if there was a way of suspending it over his chair too.

honeymoon - we have this chair. dd still loved it when she was well over 2, and I had to remove it and get her an alternative whilst I was pregnant, as I was worried that she'd still be using it when ds arrived. I am now very happy that you asked this question, as googling images of it has reminded me about the teddy bear bar, which I had totally forgotten about! Will try and dig it out this afternoon.

I would recommend this as a good buy too honeymoon. In the first stage it can be put over any change mat, or positioned for kicking whilst in a bouncy chair (as we discovered last night), then in second stage it is ideal for sitting at (in a bumbo seat was popular with dd), and third stage standing at. It's another thing that I had to swipe a few months before ds arrived, as dd was still using it. Am sure it has come down in price a lot since we bought it for dd.

Ds slept in his Moses Basket for 3 hours last night!

He is laid in it now but fidgiting.

Hope everyone had a good night.

KSal · 17/12/2008 17:25

CSWS - spookily enough i have bought exactly the same present for emma for christmas - am just about to wrap it!

Aubergenie · 17/12/2008 18:31

Myjob - We've got the same problem with our bouncy chair. In fact it's just taking up valuable space in our small flat. I'm wondering whether to give it back to the friend who passed it on to me, but not sure whether it's something he might grow to like. COngratulations on the sleep. I could do with some of that as I've come down with yet ANOTHER cold and feel lousy.

Sorry to hear about all the sick Heather and Ekka. On that subject what is the difference between normal posseting and problem sick BF baby? DS was bringing up lots of curdled milk today (about 5 times after a feed) and is obviously being troubled by a windy tummy and has been very upset. I'm not sure whether it's normal or not. Can anyone advise?

loulou33 · 17/12/2008 20:13

Hi CSWS - glad Duncan is sleeping better, fingers crossed it continues. Joe decided to wake several times last night and has been eating nearly all day as he's so tired, he wants to comfort feed. I am hoping he'll settle soon so i can go to bed, i had forgotten how crap you feel with so little sleep

Lozza - you can feed him with the baby strap/seat belt on in the plane as you can turn him inside the strap so he's able to feed iyswim. i flew with 3 week old and again when 2 months and he slept the whole way both times shortly after take off(i think the engine noise helped him settle bit like the hoover or washing machine) you can hold a dummy in his mouth or use your finger for take off and landing if he doesn't need feeding but if they don't want to suck, you can't make them, can you? I wouldn't worry about disturbing the passengers, its not a long flight and i'm sure the engine noise will drown out his crying!!

Honeymoonmummy · 17/12/2008 21:05

Thanks for all the bouncy chair advice guys.

I've been to the baby clinic today and then to the docs, DD has definitely got reflux, its a relief really that its something common and hopefully it will make her a little easier to look after once she's better.

Aubergenie - could your DS have reflux? Check out the symptoms here

Oh and the cot arrived today...

pepperrabbit · 17/12/2008 21:15

Evening all, CSWS glad you've got a bit more sleep and hope everyone else feeling ok tonight.
DD had a good night last night (at last!) she slept from 11.30pm to 7am. I, however, woke up at 3am & 4am to check she was OK ...
Re bouncy chairs, we have a biggish Mothercare one from DS2 which DD spends most of her time in downstairs, and an arch you can rest over the top.
Upstairs we have the cheapest bouncy chair you can imagine - literally metal frame and shiny material cover - which we use at bathtime etc or while I corale the washing/DS's/cat/rubbish etc. We even dismantled it and took it on holiday last year and it was fab (tho probably looked odd on the security scan!).
I'm extremely lazy hence the 2 bouncy chairs, 2 kettles etc .
On another thing - is anyone else having a problem with their pre-schooler or toddler?
DS2 seems convinced something terrible will happen to DD if he can't see her. He is 2.5 and gets completely distraught if I try to put her upstairs to sleep in the day, he nearly drowned he was so upset in the bath the other day - kept shouting " don't put her under the water!" and this evening we had to give him calpol to calm him down when we put her in her room and he had to go to bed. It's getting a bit silly, even tho I constantly reassure him (and have never put DD under the water!!).
Not really sure what to do.

Honeymoonmummy · 17/12/2008 21:50

That's the sweetest thing pepper!!!!! Very irritating to live with I'm sure but soooo sweet!
Er...no advice tho

ronshar · 17/12/2008 22:16

My 4 year old DD has changed from a beautiful happy little thing into a monster. I did ask my DH if it was me being a bit sensitive and tired but he said DD has def changed. She is just so challenging. We are now at the pre sticker chart stage. She is currently "trying" her hardest to behave this week in exchange for a big surprise on Saturday. So far it is working.

KSal · 17/12/2008 22:49

honeymoonmummy i'd be really interested to know the advice you were given for reflux.... emma brings up liquid all the time, it doesn't seem to bother her too much right now but anything to reduce it would be welcomed

star6 · 18/12/2008 04:03

pepperabbit - how adorable about your ds! I realize it's probably annoying, but cute that he cares for his little sister so much
Hello all - only 2 more days of school until the winter holiday and I get to be at home with Q all the time for 2 whole weeks!! Hooray! DH is really stressed lately - he has a lot going on in his life, but once a week gets in a "mood" and will never take it out on DS but instantly takes it all out on me... I have told him that I won't have ds growing up in an environment where his father treats his mother like that - no way, so learn to deal with your issues and anger or something else needs to happen I love him with all of my heart and I know he loves me and DS but he needs to learn to control himself or I can't carry on... never thought I'd say that.
Is everyone already having sex again? We still haven't and ds will be 11 weeks tomorrow... and didn't for 2 months prior to birth either. The whole labour and birth - 36 hours of many people I do not know quite forcefully "examining" me (while I screamed and struggled and asked them repeatedly to STOP) against my will has left me unable to even use tampons. I just wonder if all of this is contributing to dh's "moods"...
sorry to be a downer.
DS loves his bouncy seat but only for 10 min at a time and I have to be talking to or singing to him while he's in it or he wants out and into my arms. He will sit in it for however long I want to shower, though. I think he likes the noise of the shower.
He didn't settle until 10.45 tonight but is now up at 3 - just fed and is dozing off again, but I find it nearly impossible to return to sleep!
csws I'm so glad that your ds seems to be turning the corner in terms of sleep a bit.

no sex here yet, but will resume normal service soon, i'm having some very dirty dreams!!
don't stress star dd was 5 months before i had sex again, i was so paranoid my scar was gonna split open, it did hurt, but only a little, kinda like the 1st time when i lost my virginity. my friends dh moaned and moaned after her dd was born that they had sex after 3 weeks! she said it was awful, she's due her 2nd any day now.
maybe you dh needs to do something like boxing or karate to get rid of his anger, it works for my dh, he's usually too tired afterwards to be angry.

Honeymoonmummy · 18/12/2008 10:59

Ha ha heather!!

Star maybe you should get your DH some "specialist" films to watch

Ksal, see my 21.05 post link above, if your baby is regurgitating milk, and being sick inbetween feeds, it could be reflux.

Apparently reflux occurs in 50% of babies at some point but symptoms only show in 50% of those. The only cure for it is baby gaviscon which u need to get from the doctor. It was first time I'd taken Poppy other than 6 week check and the doctor was brilliant, I expected to be treated as a paranoid mum (think I'm a bit post natal at the mo) but he was great.

Other practical things are dont leave baby to lie down after a feed, immediately sit her up in your arms on your knee and rock her gently to get the wind up, HV said dont pat cos it makes them sick, she said dont need to stroke back either but i find gentle stroking brings up DD's wind.

Also, elevate the cot at the "head" end by putting a phone book under the legs at one end. Put a rolled up blanket in a U shape at the foot of the cot then put babys legs over the blanket slightly spread so baby doesnt end up sliding down between the bars (if you have that kind of cot)

Re gaviscon, I am bf ing, so I have to give it 6 times a day , you mix 5ml of breast milk (or cooled boiled water) to gaviscon to make a paste then add another 10ml of breast milk and give it to baby in a bottle. If baby is one who feeds for 15 mins then takes a break give it after the 15 mins. If like me she feeds for 30 mins without taking a breath, break her off to give the bottle.

I dont know about if you're bottle feeding.

Hope this all helps! Maybe discuss with HV at your next clinic?

I feel soooo cheerful today, I feel a bit like a fog has lifted and I havent even had much sleep, I think its the relief of knowing (hopefully) why she's such an unhappy baby most of the time.

Honeymoonmummy · 18/12/2008 11:02

Oh and keep baby still for 30 mins after each feed (other than the gentle rocking) if you can. Dont move her about too much, change her etc.

I'm off now to find other threads on reflux so I'll post them here if I find good ones.

I'm also waiting for a call back from the HV re some practical tips re best way to bf with reflux etc so I'll let you know if anything good.

Aubergenie - babies often have random sicky days IME. Ds also had one a couple of days ago. I wouldn't worry unless it continues for a few days or he has other 'symptoms' with it.

No problems with dd of the type you describe pepper. Has your ds or any of his friends lost a close family member recently, whereby he is worried that the same will happen?

star - starting a family is a huge deal for most couples. Life can change so dramatically, and it's tough on everyone to suddenly not have the free time and lack of responsibility that you had before. Sadly some men don't deal with this so well. Iirc dh and I didn't get on well when dd was little, and we are not getting on well again now that we have ds. Hopefully things will improve for us both soon, but give it a while.
Dh and I haven't had sex yet either. Bit difficult with ds in bed with us all the time, though not sure whether we'd have bothered anyway. We last had sex when I was 12 weeks pregnant .

honeymoon - I have to pick you up on your 'the only cure for it [reflux] is baby gaviscon'. Firstly, gaviscon is not a cure, it merely treats the symptoms. The cure is time, as the muscle responsible for stopping stuff coming back up gets stronger as the baby gets older.
Secondly, there are lots of other medication options that are used for reflux, though they are usually prescribed by a consultant. Ranitadine is poss the best known. You will prob be reading all about these now if you are looking at other reflux threads .
I'm also wondering whether Poppy might be reacting a bit to dairy in your breastmilk. It's more common than most people realise, and some of the symptoms do present very similarly to reflux. To test this theory you'd need to cut out (or cut right down if you have a lot) all dairy from your diet for 2 weeks, as it takes almost that long for it all to clear from your system. I wish that someone had suggested it to me earlier with dd, and saved me from weeks and weeks of hell. Thankfully we picked up on the signs much quicker with ds.

No sex in the Aubergine household either Star. We were talking about it last night and DP is fine with waiting a while. We've both been bickering quite a bit over the last couple of weeks - I think I'm feeling quite sensitive and DP is feeling the pressure of being the main provider for his family now. We decided that we need to make a bit more time for each other rather than just focussing all our attention on the baby, which is what we've been doing.

To be honest sex is really not at the top of my list at the moment - I've got a horrible cold at the moment and every time I cough or sneeze I have to cross my legs to prevent any -ahem - leakage. It's mortifying.

I was in Boots the other day looking for some vaginal weights to tone up my undercarriage. Couldn't find any and was too embarrased to ask!! Anyone else having the same problem or am I the only one who hasn't done enough pelvic floor excercises?

Honeymoonmummy · 18/12/2008 19:41

You're right to pick me up on that CSWS, the doc said to try gaviscon for 6 weeks and if not gone by then to try the ranitadine.

You could also have something re the dairy intolerance. I am not intolerant but DH was very ill as a baby until they stopped giving him dairy milk. Also my mum and her brother is lactose intolerant... but I dont want to give up dairy for 2 weeks now cos i wont know if the reflux is going away (doc said would improve in 1-2 weeks) or its the intolerance... will give the gaviscon its due time and if no improvements will try the dairy. DD does seem to be improving already, we had a whole 20 mins of quiet alert time with grandad today!!!!! Without having the hairdryer on either!!!!!

I am still reading, there are loads of links, but cranial osteopathy apparently can work. Go to www.cranial.org.uk to find one in your area or if you're near london theres a charity called the osteopathic centre for children which you can go to and pay what you can afford. My friend went to the Manchester one after her babies head tended to lean to the right and she said its great, she pays £10. I have found one where I live, we're going tomorrow so I'll let you know how I get on. Apparently it can work with fractious babies generally, have you considered it CSWS? Could your baby have silent reflux? I'm sure you've already thought about it cos you seem much more informed on baby things than I!!

Honeymoonmummy · 18/12/2008 19:42

Oh and thanks MyJob

Honeymoonmummy · 18/12/2008 19:47

Just found rather a useful website re reflux/ colic/ fussy babies/ cluster feeding:
www.pollywogbaby.com/

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/12/2008 19:50

Yes honeymoon - dd and ds diagnosed with silent reflux, although tbh I don't think that ds has it very badly any more, so we only give gaviscon occasionally.
He has had 2 sessions of CO and dd had 3. Believe me, I'm an expert in fractious and difficult babies .

At least you'll still be able to eat chocolates and drink baileys and have cream and custard and brandy sauce on your xmas pud if you don't try the dairy thing yet .

Sorry CSWS must've missed that, I only joined the postnatal group late as Poppy didnt come along till Nov 5 [scared of being evicted from October thread emoticon]

I haven't had a drink yet! I havent touched a drop of booze since last Feb!! And I used to be a glass [ahem] of wine a night girl!! Breastfeeding from 6 pm to midnight every night aint exactly conducive to alcohol!!!!!!

I'm trying her in her cot for the first time tonight. Any tips anyone??? I'm expecting the worst...I'll be on the scrounge for matchsticks in the morning.

SmudgeyDoodle · 18/12/2008 21:25

Evening everyone. home alone tonight as DH out for his Christmas do. managed to get DS to bed whilst DD lying in her moses basket but not managed to get her to sleep yet. She's lying next to me staring intently at me and occasionally squeaking so I look at her. Aubergine I would persevere with the bouncy chair for a bit longer. I seem to remember that DS took a while to decide he liked it. Have you tried changing the position of it? Might be that it is under a funny light, in a draft etc. Quite of those of you getting whole nights sleep. At the moment DD seems to be waking about 3 times but she does seem to settle quickly so can't really complain. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed still with the state of the house - too much stuff and not enough storage. Feeling like we are nearly sorted for Chrimstas yet. I haven't dared put up the tree yet as DS seems to think the baubels are balls and keeps throwing them. Sympathies for those with sicky babies. DD seems to be getting much better so I do think that it's linked to the amount of snot she's had to swallow. Star that you are having a tough time with DH. Keep talking to each other and make time to be together too if you can. We haven't done the deed yet and like CSWS I think we haven't since I was about 16weeks pregnant. Im' sure we'll get back in the saddle soon but I feel we're out of the habit so not sure how to start it off Sorry for the epic post. DD still smiling at me and trying to push herself off me. I can't believe how strong she is. she can take her own weight on her legs already!
