I can understand baby gym envy. We've got two for DD and a special tummy time thing which she HATES! They use them until them can sit up on their own. I think the guidelines say up to 6 months. Some have the facility to just be a play mat, then you can use them for however long. Of the two we have, one can be converted for older babies and the other can't. We got the second one for a change and DD does seem to like to see different things hanging above her head!

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 14:29

I really wouldn't get another gym at this stage Aubergenie - he will only get decent use out of it if he is a very late roller/sitter/crawler. Better IMO to spend the money on one of these or these.
Or if his bouncy chair isn't one that lasts into toddlerhood, get one like I got for ds this week (here) as he's loving playing with the dangly toys on his, so it's sort of acting like a gym too.

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 14:37

or one of these Aubergenie - we have a previous incarnation of it (from freecycle) and there is one at a baby group we went to, and they always seem to get loads of use. The legs detach so once they are sitting they can play with it at floor level.

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 14:46

or have I recommended this before? Can be used in 3 ways, the first hanging over them like a gym, and the final as a stand up piano, so should last at least 2 years.

This looks like a similar idea.

What would we do without you CSWS?! [awe emoticon]

Just been to cranial osteopath for 4th time, he said she's improved a lot

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 15:40

That's good honeymoon.

Can you tell that ds is asleep on my lap so I can do little else but MN? Dd is watching Peppa Pig just for a change .

Honeymoonmummy · 16/01/2009 15:52

Poppy is addicted to Baby TV. What was that i was saying about not letting her watch before the age of 3?

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 15:55

Who was it with the minimalist house/flat? Was it star? How is that going now?

Ekka · 16/01/2009 16:00

Hi, just a quick post - welcome Mathasmama!

We're all shattered. Ds has decided that he can't go more than 1.5hrs without a feed at night and only manages a max of 2 hrs during the day, plus dd was up loads last night, now has a streaming cold, bright red cheeks and has barely eaten today so I have a horrible feeling she may be teething again.... Still, we're surviving, though I may or may not manage to get through this afternoon without resorting to tv as well!

Got to go and get some chocolate healthy snacks to see me through till dinner

jenwa · 16/01/2009 16:05

just seen about that plane crash that landed in the sea! How scary is that, I read about the mother clinging to her child, It makes you feel sick to think what could have happened, it feels so worse when children are involved (especially when you have your own)
Luckily all survived.

Sorry, it is just sooo scary but everyone safe and well!

csws yes you are mumsnetting today! Peppa pig is fab sometimes I am still watching in and realise DD has gone out the room

loulou33 · 16/01/2009 16:18

hi all,

Ekka - you and me had the same night last night. DS1 was up til 3am coughing and sneezing. The cough linctus the doc gave us does not stop him coughing and it breaks my heart as there is nothing that seems to work - anyone know of a decent cough remedy for 3 yo? Joe is doing well and he loves his bumbo now he can get his head up to see what's going on. He rolled off the sofa onto my lap on Sunday - luckily i was sat next to him as he slept and when he woke he just flipped sideways and rolled off. No more putting him there from now on.

CSWS - I have the fabric baby bath seat from mothercare (deluxe baby bather - splish splash i think its called. Its great for now but i also have one that he can sit up in for a few months time. Joe is 15 lbs now and has outgrown his crib, cot for pram and most of his 3-6 months clothes

Honeymoonmummy · 16/01/2009 16:24

Ha ha Jenwa! (re Peppa pig not plane crash )

God, Poppy has only just graduated to 0-3 months!

star6 · 16/01/2009 18:44

Hi all... been reading but no time to post lately as I had loads of work piling up and ds NOT NOT NOT sleeping well... did I make it clear that night times are horrific?
csws congratulations on the 7 hours!!!
It's lovely to "meet" you MM heather was it you who had the tumble? scary! glad he's ok!
went to CO - immediately after and each day since (tues) he's been napping solid naps during the day at my friend's house but still having periods of screaming for her and doesnt like feeding when not breast though it is ebm... i think we just do whatever he wants when he screams thats why we dont hear it a lot...
I think maybe I'm doing something really wrong because he's 15 weeks now and...

  • He doesn't grab at/reach for toys still... just looks at them (accidentally swipes sometimes)
  • Still cries sometimes and only way to soothe is to stand up and walk around carrying him.
  • won't be set down for longer than a few minutes at a time without crying (even in swing and/or bouncy seat)
  • Started waking every 2 hours throughout the night (used to do a nice 4-5 hour stretch, then wake every 2 hours...)
  • arches his back/body when feeding quite often
  • cries and gets red in the face as if straining (out of nowhere, just does it sometimes).... sometimes a fart can relieve this and make everything ok
  • often wants to be held facing OUT (not looking at us)with our arm over his tummy.

His legs are strong... he holds his head up well.... he follows sounds and smiles, gurgles, squeals with happiness... but def not grabbing for or even attempting to get toys.
I just don't know... sometimes I think it's all normal and ok and then I read what your babies are doing and I'm not sure

star please dont worry, all babies are different and development can be so different from one to another. I dont think the grabbing is expected yet so dont worry about that. He may have colic although usually grows out of that soon I think but the arching and screaming could be colic sypmtoms or just wind. He could also be having another growth spurt so getting hungry again.
If he has become used to being soothed by being carried around then maybe he is expecting this and cries to get attention to soothe him ( i am not saying it is wrong just that he may only feel that he needs you to soothe him and not understand he can calm himself down by himself) you are not doing anything wrong by holding him but maybe try to give him some time on his own to cry sometimes and see how he reacts to it? Also try getting him used to spending more time in his chair even with you talking to him whilst he is in it, or eating your dinner with him in it but still paying him attention so he knows you are still there and he can see you.
He sounds like a normal baby though to be honest and try not to worry, I am sure he is fine

jenwa · 16/01/2009 20:21

Sorry if that ended quick, I was convinced Phoebe was screaming but she was not, I am hearing things now!

Just dont worry star but speak to your HV or Dr if concerned.

Star - he sounds absolutely right for his age ie swiping at toys. I think reaching and grabbing is a few weeks away yet for him. Its a good sign that he wants to look out as it shows he's sociable and interested in the world and feels safe to explore it whilst still being close to you. Joe does the arching back thing when feeding and usually means he has wind. Q obviously likes movement and that is still normal for this age group imo. Joe starting waking every few hours at night at 15 weeks - he's settled a bit since then but i think it took a good 2 weeks for my milk supply to increase enough to see him sleep for longer spells at night. Apparently, its normal at this age to start to get hungrier... The crying and red in the face out of nowhere also sounds like wind to me. Joe can be happy and gurgly one minute and suddenly cry/squeal as though he's been stabbed (I guess that's what trapped wind feels like). Have you been eating anything different recently or a lot of one particular thing?? I know its a cliche but it will pass and i remind myself of this frequently when Joe has a day of being just as you describe. Its bloody tiring and you have to go to work on top of that as well - big hugs to you sweetheart

Marthasmama · 16/01/2009 20:54

I think it must be part of the 'baby brain' thing. Sometimes my lovely DH takes DD out so I can catch up with sleep and I often wake up, jump out of bed (well lollup really) to get her because I swear I hear her crying in her cot.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 21:03

star - am sending a big hug your way to begin with, as it sounds like you really need it.
Please don't be surprised that ds isn't so keen on drinking ebm from a bottle. Breastfeeding is about so much more than the actual milk and nutrition - it's a bonding experience which provides reassurance and comfort to the baby, and Q is getting old enough now to assert his opinion on which feeding method he prefers. Try and take heart from the fact that at least he doesn't prefer the bottle and want to give up breastfeeding .

Grabbing at/reaching for toys doesn't sound abnormal at all. Ds is still more interested in eating his hands than reaching for toys! He's pulled at the ones on his new chair this week, but that is really the first proper interest he's shown.
Crying soothed only by walking - dd was still like that when she was several months old, so at this age it sounds quite normal to me for all but the most placid of babies. I only do 'spirited' children .
Setting down - perhaps he is getting too tired with his change in routine - ds won't be set down happily if he is at all tired or hungry.
The next 2 sound like maybe he is suffering from wind - now he is bigger you may need to adjust the position that you feed him in to ensure that he is still comfortable and not sucking in any air. If you're not already, you could try using a drop of infacol before a feed to see if it helps at all.
I'm guessing that you are expressing and feeding plenty to keep up your supply, so it's not likely to be an issue with this? But you're not expressing so much that you're building up an oversupply are you? I had some horrible feeds with ds when my supply was too abundant.
As for being held facing out - the hand over his tummy may be linked to wind, but more likely he just wants to face out to see what's going on in the world. Ds likes to face out in the carrier now unless he's wanting to sleep.

I may not have hit the nail on the head exactly with these, but the point is to show that either these things are not unusual, or there are explanations which don't involve you being bad parents or Q having anything wrong other than the usual frustrations of being a baby .
