And I was told off for drinking OJ because 'it makes the milk acidic', even though I needed it to take iron tablets due to my iron being half of the minimum level! I find the confilcting advice a real pain. It leaves you more confused than if you had never bothered asking. My friend gave her little one brown sugar and water to clean him out. Luckily that is not something I've had to deal with, quite the opposite actually. I have scaley lizard hands from the amount of soaking in Vanish Oxi I've had to do due to escaping poo!

myjob we borrowed a friends crib for our room and I know antother of their friends is expecting and would like to loan it so to behonest I thought sooner the better, we did with dd1 at 8 weeks but I am a little worried as we are in the loft so if she unsettled tonight I will be walking up and down and not impressed

She settled well tonight, bathed her then gave her bottle at 6 30 and she is asleep in her own room. She usually wakes and she did at 730 and I put the dummy back in about 3 times and she has gone back to sleep. I will go now and give her a bottle to (hopefully) see her through the night! Sorry myjob Naomi not settling well tonight, hopefully she soon falls alseep!
marthasmama welcome to the thread

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/01/2009 21:33

Welcome Marthasmama. You should be waking your dd up every 2 hours, obviously. Then we can feel attuned to each other .

Honeymoon - orange is good for constipation once they are weaned, so store that as a tip for later. Some mothers do seem to find that their babies react to citrus in their milk, but it's not a foregone conclusion, and there is no research to prove that it passes through at all (dairy is iirc the only thing that has research which confirms it passes through in bm).

Very stylish (and expensive!) choice of high chair mm.
For anyone wondering which high chair to get when it comes time to wean, let me save you starting a thread to ask by telling you that you will get about 100 posts telling you to get the antilop from Ikea for about £13. I had an expensive 'lasts years and years' chair for dd, but anticipate buying an Antilop this time around.

Jenwa - I have a Mountain Buggy, but also bought a Quest for when I want something smaller/going in to London. No complaints, although I haven't used it much. Dd has never really been keen on buggies - preferred a carrier or to walk, and ds is so far following in her footsteps in that respect.

ronshar · 14/01/2009 22:30

Welcome Marthasmama. You are most welcome here with us all. How many children do you have or am I being daft and not reading properly?

I have been told apple juice is good for bf a constipated baby. I wish I had a little bit of that problem. I am going through at least 12 nappies a day currently. I did use wash nappies for DD2 but there is no way I could keep up with the washing.
Ds always has a very happy look about him as he fills his nappy! Typical boy

Can I ask everyones opinion about something?
I am struggling with my milk supply. Something I never thought would happen, I am normally drowning in the stuff.
Would I be crap and selfish if I started to give a formula feed at bed time, 6pm? William will take a bottle quite happily but I just dont seem to have enough milk to express a bottle full every day.
What do you all think? I am really stuck at the moment and it is getting me down.

Aubergenie · 14/01/2009 22:30

Welcome to the thread Marthasmama!

Following on from this morning's bathseat conversation, ds nearly tipped his backwards this evening. He loves pushing his legs against the floor of the bath now, and one of the suction pads had come unstuck. He's just starting to get too big for it now.

We started to implement our grand plan to get ds in bed by 8 o'clock this evening. What a disaster. He's only just fallen asleep in dp in the front room! (I'm in the kitchen drinking a glass of wine!)

ronshar · 14/01/2009 22:33

Keep at it Aubergine. The wine will help loads.
Am I right in thinking that babies take 3 days to learn a new skill/get used to a new experience. Not sure where I have picked that one up. Could be rubbish

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/01/2009 22:38

ronshar - you wouldn't be crap and selfish IMO, but it could be the beginning of the end of bf, so think about how you would feel about that before rushing ahead. What makes you think that your supply is not adequate (which is incredibly rare btw)?

Aubergenie - I've just finished 2 glasses of wine. VERY tough couple of days with dd.

Marthasmama · 14/01/2009 22:48

Thank you all for your welcomes. I am loving the Bloom Baby, but yes it was expensive . However the good thing is that she'll be able to use if for years. Plus she is very clingy in so far as she has to be with me, not necessarily ON me so that chair seemed like a good option. In addition to my October baby I also have a July 2003 baby! He loves his little sister very much, too much most of the time! He was a nightmare baby so I am relieved that this one has been better so far, I stress the so far! I am enjoying having a little girl and have no doubt that she will become a tomboy because I keep putting her in girly dresses.

Ronshar - I've been worrying about my milk supply too. LO seems to still be hungry after a feed and is getting angry, shouting at my boobs a lot! Is it just a growth spurt do you think? I had my son so long ago I can't remember!!

ronshar · 14/01/2009 22:48

CSWS I knew I would get a response from you, just not so fast
I dont really know whats up. Like I said previously I have so much milk I could bottle it & sell it. This time I dont even need to wear a breast pad during the day. Also William is still only feeding for 10-15 mins every 3 hours. He has managed to sleep the last few nights better but I am still feeding between 5-8pm then he wakes at 11pm. If I am lucky he will sleep til 4 or 5am!
We went to clinic last Friday and HV was fab. No pressure to FF but William is below his line which was already lower than the 50th centile. I know the charts are a bit crap but he isnt even keeping up a regular wieght gain. I havent been to clinic since our 8 week check so it was really noticable!

ronshar · 14/01/2009 22:50

Marthasmama, tell me about it. 2 DDs of 9 & 4, I have forgotten everything

Marthasmama · 14/01/2009 22:53

Ronshar - Martha's growth had also dropped off a little last time she was weighed. She had been 75th (little fatty) and has dropped down to the 50th. But I think that's normal for bf babies. They gain a lot at first then slow down as they don't get as fat as ff babies. It could be that our supply is settling down now, but I definately share your concerns. I used to have solid boobs if Martha went for more than three hours, now, no worries. My DH asked me what I wanted to do and ideally I'd like to install some sort of gauge/level on my boobs to see how much I was giving her!

ronshar · 14/01/2009 23:00

My DS was below the 50 at birth but not by much but now he has dropped further! He isnt skinny and has long legs & big feet so he is in his 3-6 month sleepsuits and they fit him perfectly.
I am not worried as such but when he has expressed milk he only drinks 3oz at a time! How will he grow if he never eats enough?

ronshar · 14/01/2009 23:03

Right off we go for the next feed
Night ladies. I hope you all get more sleep

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/01/2009 07:44

ronshar/mm - are you feeding on demand or to a schedule? You might find this article interesting in relation to this.

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 15/01/2009 09:06

Very interesting, thank you CSWS. I am demand feeding as the idea of ME doing anything on a schedule is hilarious! With my first son I bought a paticular book, took one look at the feeding schedule, laughed and gave it away to charity. I can't even be trusted to remember when to take anitbiotics. My LO is very difficult to read though, she doesn't seem to give my any clues until it's too late and she screaming the house down. She has started teething (already!) so always has her hands in her mouth and is a thumb sucker so will have that in her gob even if she's just fed. But, I do live by the philosophy that if in doubt get 'em out! I am going to start weighing her weekly to make sure she's still gaining well. She is growing and like ronshar's DS, Martha is very long with long thin feet, just not that plump anymore.

ronshar · 15/01/2009 10:04

CSWS, I would love to know what they teach to Lactation Masters students.
Thank you that was very interesting. I am feeding to demand. I think that due to the move Christmas etc I think poor DS has been having to wait a bit longer. Which has obviously made the difference, according to the articule.

Will persevere. Having 3 children is not conducive(sp) to easy breast feeding in my house!!!

Hi all - my friend had a prob with her supply and i found loads of links for her; see at bottom, she had probs at outset with newborn but something may help?

Ronshar - thanks, will try apple juice... will cider do the same thing??

CSWS - useful to know re chair thanks. I've just started looking at chairs.

Poppy has an infection on her finger from me biting her nails . She's on Fucidin cream and has antibiotics as a backup if cream doesnt work.

Marthasmama · 15/01/2009 17:01

Thanks all for the bf advice. DD spent almost all day feeding so she must hopefully that will kick start production!

SmudgeyDoodle · 15/01/2009 21:23

Evening all. Phew, DH home today so have had a more relaxed evening. Thanks for article CSWS. I am BF on demand and really notice the starting to snuffle and toss and turn in the night when DD wants to feed. Unfortunately at the moment, she seems to want to feed for 45 mins in the night and I'm just too tired to sit up for that long so she's back in my bed. I say unfortunately because I then sleep all cramped up and have a sore back.
DD seems to be getting longer and longer rather than filling out. I'm not worried at all apart from the fact that she's already nearly filling 3-6 month babygros and she's not even 3 months! n I'm very excited because I'm getting my hair done on Sat. Need to book in again for a months time before we go to Jamaica for s-i-l wedding. No idea what I'm going to wear. Anyone seen any nice, cheap, summery, flattering dresses?

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/01/2009 22:20

Glad you've found the article interesting. Someone else linked to it only last week, so it was fresh in my mind .

Dh back here too Smudgey, so at least I didn't have to clear the bombsite kitchen.
He's got to go away again next week though, and the week after .

New carpet fitted on stairs today, so now things really starting to look more complete.

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 16/01/2009 08:30

Ds did his longest ever stretch of sleep last night - just over 7 hours . He'd had very very little sleep during the day, so was obv knackered. What a shame that dd had me up instead, so I only got a 3 hour stretch from it.

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 16/01/2009 09:30

Yay for the sleep, boo that you didn't get to enjoy it! It's so nice when they do it beacuse then at least you know they CAN! We had the worst night for a long time last night, the longest stretch of sleep we had was 1.5 hours. Teach us to be pleased with ourselves for getting her to sleep through . I am convinced it was the bloddy jabs she had on Wednesday that screwed her up. How's everyone else getting on with the jabs? Had second ones yet? Poor DD is absolutely knackered but is still smiling and wiggling like a trooper! Bless her.

Aubergenie · 16/01/2009 09:48

How frustrating CSWS! But as you say, MM, good to know he can do it. The longest ds has slept is 5 hours and he only did that a couple of times.

I've got a question - how long do babies use baby gyms for? Dp has got baby gym envy, and wants to buy a new one. I can't help thinking that the money might be better spent elsewhere when we've already got one (admittedly not as exciting) especially if he's not going to use it for that long.
