my job - try things like flapjacks ) porridge with added sugar etc as oats are good fuel source for babies. Also try sesame seeds snacks (can't remember what they are called but they are little biscuits made of seeds in healthy eating shelves at tesco, very handy for snacking on and full of energy for baby)I still have huge leftovers of baby fat and Joe eating all the time and hie's putting on weight (sorry) maybe i'm eating too much. Apart from adding a few extra calories to your diet, there is nothing else you can do and she's happy which is sure sign she's getting enough. Maybe, she's just little - are you and Naomi's dad slim??? The charts are also based on ff babies so the gains are more uniform. Glad your hv is not anxious about it and i would take that as a good sign as well.

Star - have you tried eating sesame seeds as they are full of iron?? Will try to remember the name of the snack bars.....god damn baby brain!! And no, q shouldn't be anaemic, he has been stealing all your iron and should have sufficient iron until he's about 6-9 months!! If he were low on iron he would be pale, listless, breathless when feeding and very tired all the time (these were the signs we were told to look out for when Joe was ill).

Ekka · 03/01/2009 14:45

Myjob - I think that most nuts are high in healthy fats so any should do. I ate pecans as I can't stand walnuts either! I seem to be living on chocolate (so thats probably why ds is gaining much faster than dd ) but I don't think thats exactly recommended . I can't think of anything else off hand, but will dig out my baby weaning books later as I remember they all had sections on healthy foods high in fat(its important for babies & kids to have plenty of fat in their diet).

Must go as ds is starting to scream....

thanks loulou - ohhhh I WISH he were "tired all the time" Just kidding... it's lovely to have a happy gurgling, cooing smiling baby. Just not so lovely when he's fighting tiredness or going to sleep. Ive seen those sesame bars before, I will pick those up. I don't know what they are called either.

Myjob - If Naomi is happy and growing (even if just a little), then I'm sure she's fine She's probably just going to be little. My Dad told me a few weeks ago after looking in my baby book that I weighed at 8 months what Q weighs now (nearly 13 lbs) and I'm a healthy adult now... i was always short but now quite average, (5ft 2.5 inches).

Incidentally, is 13 lbs at 13 weeks quite a lot? Q looks really pudgy now... we're always joking about how chubby he is, but now I'm worried that perhaps I'm over feeding him. he does eat A LOT. I am guilty because it's sort of my "easy way out".. when he cries, see if he's hungry first. But he probably wouldn't eat half of those times if i didn't offer, right? how many times per day are you all feeding your LO's.

Star, I think DS is probably about the same weight - I'm getting him weighed next week. I'm like you - I tend to offer the breast if he's upset, as it almost always comforts him, but I worry that I might be doing it too much. I keep reading that it's not possible to overfeed a breastfed baby, but I still worry. CSWS - you're a bfing expert. What do you think?

BTW, my sister had been diagnosed as very anaemic recently and she's snacking on a lot of dried apricots as they're very high in iron.

star6 · 03/01/2009 19:49

I have loads of dried apricots... but have sort of gone off them as they get really disgusting if you have too many at once. I'm the kind of person who wants to fix a problem right away... so I ate 2 bags within 2 hours when I first heard that they were good for iron

I agree aubergenie. I know it's "impossible" to overfeed... but I really do think I might over feed. he feeds pretty much every 2 hours or less during the day and then at night, well... he does that 4-5 hour stretch (he's sleeping now) but then it's every 1 to 1 1/2 hours after that . I just don't want to create an obese toddler
He's really cute and lovely, just getting so heavy. DH thinks I "shove my boob in his mouth" way too much. I think, whatever works . He's just jealous taht he can't lactate. !
Actually, did you know that men CAN lactate?? I read that

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/01/2009 19:57

Nah, don't reckon you can overfeed a bf baby. If they get greedy and take too much then they tend to chuck it up anyway .

star - ds weighed 13lbs when I had him weighed a month ago (around 8 weeks), so I don't think it's too much for 13 weeks at all!

myjob - just a thought, but could you bear to wake once in the night to feed N if you want to try and get her weight up?

at flapjack. I might have to start making it with (dairy free) vitalite, as you can't buy any ready made that I can eat.

OP posts:
star6 · 03/01/2009 20:04

Poor you still dairy free csws!! what a nightmare. I would go crazy. Good for you keeping it up, though
Thanks for that info. He rarely spits anything back up and if he does, he tends to swallow it back down before I can get to it (groooosssssss!) He is SO chubby it's unbelievable!! We get such a laugh out of it especially when we put him in the bath. So adorable!

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/01/2009 20:30

I was dairy free for about 18 months with dd star, so this is nothing yet!

Myjob - When ds was born, he wasn't waking to feed and his blood sugar went right down. The nurses advised me to strip him down to his nappy to wake him properly. It seemed to work. Would that work when you wake Naomi?

heather1980 · 04/01/2009 11:10

star he wont be an obese toddler, a lot of the puppy fat comes off when they start to walk and crawl. dd was quite chubby and is now the skinniest 2 year old, in fact she is still wearing a pair of 9-12month jeans! i refuse to have her weighed at clinic as she is happy and healthy.
alex is cuuting a tooth! i can feel it under the gum, not quite out yet but nearly there.
i am a little worried about him though, he gets really bothered about 10-11pm and really struggles to pass wind, in fact he seems to feed and feed to relieve the pain and sometimes he throws up all the milk, he threw up twice on friday and once on thursday and once on monday. i'm not sure if i should take him to the dr or not, he's having his next jabs on the 15th so i might mention it then.
the hv is coming to the house on tuesday to do my dds 2 year checkup so might ask her.

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/01/2009 15:50

Where is everyone?!

OP posts:
Honeymoonmummy · 05/01/2009 17:40

I'm here! I finally went for my blood test today, supposed to go 2 weeks ago... will be interesting to see what my iron levels are now.

I am officially the worst mum in the world... Poppy's been sleeping in a cot pulled up next to our bed and by the morning she's wriggled over to the other side of the bars to me, so she should practically have horizontal marks on her face. i thought it was because she wanted to be close to me and/ or smelt the milk, but last night I put lots more layers on her for the first time and she slept 8 hours and woke up on the other side of the cot...I've been freezing my baby!!!!

Feel sooo bad! She's been so happy today cos she's had lots of sleep and I've had her in a nice wooly cardigan. Hopefully the same will happen tonight - fingers crossed!

star6 · 05/01/2009 18:00

I'm here too! Just back at work today... last night nightmare! Q wouldn't take bottle from DH and gave my friend a tough time taking it this morning as well (but she has 3 kids, so she was successful in getting him to take it ). Since it's his first day away from us, he didn't nap but for 5 min here and there... when I went to get him he was totally mellow and exhausted but awake! Sleeping now... I know it's early but I need him up by 5am anyway, so probably not such a bad thing to go to bed at around 6pm... .
honeymoonmummy - you didnt mean to freeze her Just kidding. I'm sure she wasn't freezing! Q LOVES to be really warm. Any mw or hv would definitely tell me that the blankets I use for him are overheating him... but they aren't. He's not sweating at all and sleeps more soundly with more blankets/heat... but never 8 hours .
WHY won't my baby sleep through?? he gets plenty of milk during the day and takes full feeds when waking in the night. I think it's just habit and you can't force a 3 month old to sleep or eat when you want him to I guess.

star6 · 05/01/2009 18:13

in fact when mw were still coming every week before, they used to always tell me to remove a blanket from his moses basket, b/c it was just "too hot" but he wouldn't sleep without the warmth!

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/01/2009 21:12

star - it's really not uncommon for babies not to sleep through yet. They are still very tiny really .

honeymoon - you couldn't have known that she was cold. Dd used to wake if the temp in her room dropped to 20 degrees, even though she had clothes and a sleeping bag and according to guidelines was plenty warm enough. Ds on the other hand doesn't seem to like it if it's very warm. They are all so different.

OP posts:
pepperrabbit · 05/01/2009 21:13

And it's been so cold these last few nights as well, we've been putting a blanket (or 2) on top of DDs sleeping bag because she's been too cold to sleep. We actually moved her into her own room on Friday night as that room is much warmer for some reason and she's slept much better - so has DH as he doesn't hear her in the night anymore.
Bit sad that she's moved out tho

Aubergenie · 05/01/2009 21:33

I've been wondering about the temperature as well. I put ds in a 2.5 tog grobag but the temp has been going down to 14 degrees in the middle of the night, so he need a blanket as well, but I was wondering whether he should be wearing a hat as well.

He's been feeding like a demon for the last few days and nights. Yesterday he fed for literally hours. I couldn't get anything done. He also seems to have given up daytime napping too. And I can't imagine that he'll ever sleep throught the night. In fact we're all over the place. DP has moved back onto the sofa as he he kept waking up and hearing a chomping noise all night long! Any thoughts of Stanley sleeping in his Amby have been shelved for the time being.

I hope it's not too bad being back at work Star! How is your friend doing?

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/01/2009 21:44

I wouldn't go for a hat Aubergenie. If he gets hot then he's no way to vent and cool himself down if he's in a hat.

Our Ambys aren't getting a lot of use are they?!

Ds is in short sleeved bodysuit, sleepsuit, and swaddled in a single blanket. Room generally 18-20 degrees throughout night.

OP posts:
Honeymoonmummy · 05/01/2009 22:31

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I have the temp to a constant 18 degrees which is freezing to DH and I, we must normally have it at 21-24, but we're getting used to it.

When can u start using grobags? I'm sure I read somewhere they're not suitable for newborns but cant remember what age they are suitable from? Poppy is 2 months old today (and still in newborn clothes - just!!)

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/01/2009 08:06

Proper grobags suitable from 7lbs. Some other makes from 10lbs iirc. Ds in one since birth, but we vary between that and a blanket.

OP posts:
Aubergenie · 06/01/2009 09:45

Good point about the hat CSWS. Thank you.

The main thing about a grobag is that their head must be big enough so it doesn't slip down through the hole. Ds couldn't go in one for a while becuase his head was really small. I love it now that he can wear them as he was always kicking off his blankets before.

I'm so cold! All my own fault. A few years ago, I took up the carpets and spent days lovingly sanding the floorboards in this flat. Big mistake. It looks great, but it's SO DRAUGHTY! I think we may have to look into getting carpet put back down, especially if we're going to end up staying here for a while, as looks likely. Poor ds's knees will appreciate it when he starts moving around.

Have a good day everyone!
