quick skim but amber and sybil can I just add that edie ain't that keen on food either (except the bits she can lick on) -so i'm gently persisting with one meal a day but preparing myself for fact it'll probably be blw later on.

bitofasnowqueen · 14/12/2008 19:26

Just marking spot where I've read to before going off to have more lemsip. .

S is really off his milk at the moment - he's taking about 3 oz's each bottle. He's still getting over this cold - is it normal?

Hiya

1 more week at school yeeaaahh!

BDQ, Neenz and others who have mentioned their babies are off milk etc. Having nearly finished with cold etc with Fleur I can say that a cold illness does make a difference to their eating, fleur is back on track now

Neenz - fleur isnt quite 7 mths yet but she also has more milk at eve and night and can down 210ml at 1am she never did this b4 solids!!! and during day can easily polish off 140ml which she never did either. I too feed her until she doesnt want more but i offer something different too and she normally polishes that off too.

Not sure bout quantities but keep reading about 500ml to 600ml a day including milk in food ie milk added and cheese yog etc.

Will try to find Sudafed WG

Loving the santa suit pics and all the posing ones for xmas we didnt ger round to do family photo maybe try DP to set something up this week

Sponge did you manage to upload vid?

Off to have bowl of baked beans and cheese!!! Its all my poor throat can tolerate!!

Amberc · 14/12/2008 19:58

Had another go with the weaning today. I am just going to keep trying once/twice a day until I crack him! I have a feeling he would prefer BLW. I just don't know what to give him. Please tell me BLW-ers! He likes Farleys Rusks and he also seems to go mad for Bickipegs (which are not food but a hard baked biscuit for teething) so he is happy holding things and putting them in his mouth. He also seems happy to eat food off the spoon if I give it to him to hold instead of trying to do it myself but it involves A LOT of mess and carrot does not come off clothes and even dyes the bowl orange!!!

Sympathies to all those with colds and even bigger sympathies to all those with DH/DPs with colds - worse than having a baby with a cold!!!

hollyivypoppy34 · 14/12/2008 20:13

amberc sympathies re the DP and cold - am in same boat as you re the weaning so happy to offer virtual (And real life at next meet up)... eggy bread was very popular this morning . maybe our kids just like carbohydrate..

also the little organix biscuits shaped like moons are good as they are little enough to hold adn suck..although they do produce a sort of orange veneer over her face...

hedgeHogfather · 14/12/2008 20:22

amber Isaac has toast, carrot sticks, pasta twists, broccoli (and we have only been doing this for a week) and also rich tea biccies. I have got some biccipegs as well.

I am loosing the plot as I cannot remember what else I wanted to write (ahhh)

spongebrainbigpants · 14/12/2008 20:26

flourymincepies, no, haven't done it yet - waiting for my techy husband who's in a mood cos he's tired! Probably won't be until tomorrow now at the earliest - you'll just have to be patient !

Baked beans and cheese - yum, making me feel hungry! Hope it soothed your throat .

Amber, we've only just started BLW this weekend and so far Alex has had: rice cakes, pittas, carrot, butternut squash, sweet potato, roast potato, turkey, apple and toast! But having said that he's not actually eaten an awful lot - most of it went on the floor! But he enjoyed playing with it and loved the roast potato. The rice cakes were a bit of a hit too (with philly spread of course!).

I've no idea whether I'm "doing it right" and I'm no expert at all, but just give it a go. Try not to worry about what he actually eats - hard I know, but that's the theory behind BLW. Good luck - oh, and happy six months for Luke from his birthday buddy Alex (for tomorrow of course! ).

spongebrainbigpants · 14/12/2008 20:27

HH, x-posted - how does Isaac get on with pasta? Wasn't sure whether it would be too small for him to pick up. Need to try broccoli too, haven't done that yet!

hedgeHogfather · 14/12/2008 20:33

used shells and he kind of put his fingers in them and got a bit confused when he tried to suck his thumb

spongebrainbigpants · 14/12/2008 20:44

HH, love the image!! Will add that to my repertoire then - thanks for the tip. Anything else you would recommend?

katyjo · 14/12/2008 21:51

Hi all

Weaning seems to be going quite well. I am giving Mia :

7am1sh milk
8am breakfast
11.30 lunch
3.30 milk
5pm dinner
7pmish milk and bed

I have been trying to give her water with meals, but she either chews the cup or smiles at me and it all dribbles down her front.
We are doing mainly purees but I do a bit of finger food too.
Sometimes I mess up her lunch, so she gets a bottle at 11 then lunch at 2pm m- bad mummy!

Whinegums Lovely to see you too, I had to take Mia out and give her a feed last week! She doesn't really seem to like the underwater swimming, but I'm hoping by the end of the course she'll be better and if I'll try to give her lunch before the class this week!

NoRoomAtThePenguin · 14/12/2008 21:52

Haven't been on for a few days so will catch up properly tomorrow. Hope everyone is ok. However was looking for stocking presents for Ryder (any ideas anyone?) and found this and had to post so drama queen can see it!

DingDongAlipalisOnAHigh · 14/12/2008 22:14

hmm, haven't got the Rapley book to hand Neenz but suspect it isn't referenced in the book. I will have a look tomorrow.

Amber the essence of BLW is to give the baby what you are eating at each meal and if you have snacks. It is fine in theory unless you are eating something v bad (like crisps) for the baby at which point I get v beady states from Peter. The things to avoid are: salty and sugary things, honey, nuts. Basically no processed meals too because of the salt content. The lists Sponge and Hedgehog have tried are fairly similar to us. Cooked carrots and green beans were popular too. Breadsticks dipped in things work well more as a utensil. It is good if luke will put the spoon in his mouth himself as eventually everyone has to learn to feed themselves. I agree the mess is a pain. HTH a bit.

Well I went to an Xmas party this evening without Peter in c London. V excited as it was the furthest and longest I have been away from him. DH coped well although P guzzled a huge amount of formula (another first). At least he didn't crack the calpol open hey Penguin?

bitofasnowqueen · 14/12/2008 22:40

Oh if only I had a girl Penguin !

Amber one of the BLWers on the weaning threads has a blog thats all about BLW with recipes etc. Just turning off the computer so no time to look and link. I think the MNer is Aitch? Worth a look for info and ideas for food I think.

Night all.

pureedchesnutsonanopenfire · 15/12/2008 07:52

Morning all- sitting admiring my Christmas tree in the early morning lightdark.....have been reading your BLW threads and comments and feeling pretty chuffed because it's what I am doing after all....babypearls has had crumpet with marmite, bits of basically all bread products and rice cakes and organix biscuits, banana, avocado, pear, clementine, green beans, pasta, carrot, butternut squash chicken and more that I can't remember. This has been in tandem with goo, but she has to have her own spoon now. And she also gets very angry if you are eating something and she isn't so she has also eaten carrot cake, sausage and pate on crackers (when we were taste-testing in Waitrose at the weekend!!) She now feeds herself from her sippy cup, though often ends up then chewing on it and soaking herself when the juice continues to drip out!!

Totally love the drama queen onesie....might have to get one as my daughter is a bit of a diva!!

neenztwinz · 15/12/2008 09:12

Yeah, Sponge that makes sense re calories v nutrition. As long as they are BF no need to worry about nutrition etc but maybe should think of ways to get more calories down them (but then do they drink less milk that way?) [confused!!]

Amber, rice cakes, bread/toast and cucumber are big BLW hits here.

Katyjo - you've got same routine as me (and yes sometimes I give lunch later if they are too tired or if we've been out and no time to make food!)

Theo was up at 12.30 and Esther at 4 last night which wasn't too bad - I am going to try to add 8oz of milk to their food today so they are getting more milk. Esther was so snuffly this morning she couldn't BF cos she couldn't breathe so it may be all down to their cold after all.

I have a dilemma about that too - I always feed them from the same bowl with the same spoon cos think you can't keep germs of one from the other anyway but now that they actually have colds should I start using separate bowls/spoons so as not to keep cross-contaminating them? My instinct says yes, my lazy mummy head says no!

pureedchesnutsonanopenfire · 15/12/2008 09:42

Neenz- I'd only start using seperate bowls when they eat so much you can't fit it in one....but then maybe I'm a lazy mummy too! My logic is that everything goes in their mouths, dirt, vomit, dog, so they might as well pick up germs from each other

katyjo · 15/12/2008 10:04

penquin don't get him very much, elc do jingle bells for £2 they keep Mia occupied for ages! I am going to wrap up a few of hamish's old toys - bad mummy!

puree I think I'm doing the same as you, I am very impressed at your daughters menu though!

neenz I have the ak complete 1st year planner and I think its quite similar to gf, just a bit more laid back.
My sisters are twins and I know one used to eat the main course and one the pudding. My mum never knew who had what, but it must mke for a healthy appetite as they are both a size 10 and 5ft 8in.
I wouldn't worry too much about the cross-contamination, they will be exposed to the same bugs, so I would be suprised if they didn't get the same viruses all the time anyway.

bitofasnowqueen · 15/12/2008 12:20

Neenz if you want to try and minimise cross contamination you could use a bowl that has a divider )I've got this one) and give them their own spoons. It might help to minimise them passing the cold back and forwards.

S is on day 3 of weaning. He's still on baby rice (need to go and buy a new handblender later) but he's taking every mouthful so far.

Thanks for putting that link in Sponge.

Still full of the cold here, my night nurse helped me sleep right through though - have no idea if DH was up in the night with S. He let me have a bit of a lie in, I didn't get up till 8 .

S asleep so need to go and have some lunch.

OP posts:
neenztwinz · 15/12/2008 13:11

BSQ, your night sounds fab - I am jealous!! Feeling rather tired today after three iffy nights with the DTs (and too much to drink on Fri and Sat!)

Thanks for thoughts re cross-contamination/feeding. My worry is one twin will be recovering (ie Theo at the mo seems to be coming out the other side of the cold) but then will get the germs back from the other, so I am going to try different spoons at least. Esther kept sneezing and blowing raspberries all over the food today when I put the spoon to her mouth (and then usually refused to open her mouth) so its just common sense that I don't then feed that food to Theo! Wish i could tho .

I've had a glimpse these last few days about what it will be like when DTs are older - Theo pinches Esther's toys if I put them too close together and Esther pulls Theo's hair. I will have to have eyes in the back of my head .

Right, Dts are in bed so I think I will go for a nap too

hedgeHogfather · 15/12/2008 13:28

neenz enjoy your nap,
DQ glad S is enjoying his babyrice
penguin I have got Isaac some things I would have bought anyway - Teething ring, doidy cup, some bits and pieces from Ikea

Not much else to report although I must go and buy stamps later to ensure all my christmas cards get their on time

bitofasnowqueen · 15/12/2008 15:34

Hi everyone - I've finally got round to uploading some pics of DS if anyone wants to have a nosy!

I've always been a bit wary of uploading pics to public forum, but discovered that if I add you as my 'mumsnet mates' I can set the privacy so only you lot can see them. So think I've added everyone from this thread (apologies if I missed anyone out, it wont be intentional).

Hi all - feel a bit left out of all the weaning talk. Won't be long now though!

Sympathies to all of you with colds!

Last night was awful - A was awake almost all night. Well it felt like that anyway. He hasn't been right for a few days now. I gave him some formula a few nights ago (to see if it would make him sleep better). It didn't - in fact he has been grizzly and windy ever since . I was worried in case he's allergic to it, but I'm thinking maybe he's teething. He had a bit of a temperature yesterday but it's gone now. No other symptoms other than being crotchety

I bought those chocolate xmas decorations for the tree last week and finished off the lot this morning . Had to go on a search for more before DH gets home so I didn't look like a complete pig

debs when is your prog on? (sorry if you've said already}
